My husband is 2 yrs post surgery and has been having severe night sweats for the last week. He has an appointment with his Bariatric team on Wednesday. Has anyone else had this problem , and what was the diagnosis?

Has anyone had the DS surgery where the Doc did not reduce the size of your stomach, they only rearranged your intestines so it wouldn't absorb as many calories. Please share your story as I'm feeling hopeless and regretful. I'm 3 days post op and can drink the same as pre-OP, im trying not to... I'm definitely freaking myself out that this will not work.

I asked my surgeon if DS patients were happy they did it. He said yes because they are thin but I wonder are you happy otherwise with your new lifestyle and is life completely different? In what way if so?

Hi guys, i start my liquid diet today and I've got all my protein drinks, sugarfree popsicles etc but what kind of soups do you all have on the pre-op diet. I don't like tomato soups and not a great fan of creamy soups either. Are there any other soups you'd recommend or recipes? Thanks!!!

So, I am in the process of getting all of my appt.s done so I can get my DS surgery done around the end of Sept. The biggest question I have is this, what can you take for over the counter pain relief? I am getting DS done because I have a problem with arthritis in my hip, so I can get more weight off of it so I may have less pain and such until the time comes that I get a full hip replacement. I currently take meloxicam and advil for pain relief, the little it provides.

While most people are familiar with lapband surgery and gastric bypass surgery, there are two other surgeries that are "gaining" popularity. One is the vertical sleeve. The other is DS surgery which is the most complex and is usually reserved for the most obese population. Some people have DS surgery in 2 parts (the first being the vertical sleeve) while others have it in one surgery. Some have an open surgery and some have a lap. approach. So, to those who have had DS surgery and to those who are considering it, let's get this forum up and running! Liz

My DS surgery was april of 2018 with Dr. Bruce at Bariatrics of NC . All has been good, but then I rate having stomach pains really bad that lasted a long time when it happened just two months ago. It has only happened about 3-4 times, so naturally I went back to my surgeon and spoke to him about it. I thought maybe I was dehydrated , but he said NOPE, you have an internal hernia going on... and that I would need surgery as soon as I can make the appointment. Sooner than later he stressed! He could not do the surgery which disappointed me but he referred me to Dr. Lindsay Sharpe. So 1 week later I made an appointment which I had surgery done with Dr. Sharpe just yes…

Hi, I had a revision from the lap-band to SIPS on 2/14/18. While I eat better by cooking more and making better choices, I'm by far not a perfect eater. I don't count carbs, fat grams, calories, or anything. I just have my meals and try as best I can to eat a "reasonable" amount. I am big on exercise, and I do that for 4-5 days a week for at least an hour to two hours. I have lost weight every single month since the surgery, from as high as 21lbs one month to .2 another month, but again, every month has been a losing month. I'm down from 296.7 to 160.8 as of today which is a little over 14 months out. BMI charts say for my height, I should be around 155lbs. …

I'm 18 days post-op, still on a full liquid diet. I have noticed that when I eat yogurt (the heaviest thing I currently eat) I am in the bathroom exactly 6 hours later, even if that is 1 am. I'm wondering about when I start eating solid food, will I always have a middle of the night bathroom run? Also, when my intestines get active they are really noisy...like rumbling across the room noisy. Is all this just part of healing or am I going to have to get used to having an alien reside in my belly?

Hey there, I’m new to this forum. My name’s Alexa and I’m 22 years old. I just had my duodenal switch surgery on March 26th of this year so I’m fresh out of surgery. I’m currently at home but I keep freaking myself out. Along with the switch, my doctor also fixed a hiatal hernia that I had and removed my gallbladder because it was enflamed and kind of “stuck” to my duodenum (I may be wrong about this part, I was still in a daze when the doctor told me). While being at home, I’ve noticed that around one of my 6 scars on my mid-right stomach it is very bruised and hurts the most. I also have a large “dent” in that spot now. I’ve been telling myself that it’s just from…

So for past week I havent been able to eat more than 3 bites of anything solid before I feel its going to make me sick. Ive tried fish, chicken, turkey, hamburger, salad it doesnt matter what it is it gets stuck feeling in my esophagus. Yes Im doing small bites and chewing it to mush. I always end up back to shake to keep my energy up. Only thing different is Im now exercising vigorously. Could my workout program be causing it? Doesnt make sense to me but at this point Im about to go back to the doctor!

I was sleeved 1/17 I did great. My dr called me a “super acchiever” until my 2 year mark when I had gained 20 lbs back. After his pep talk i gained another 10. Sigh. Now I’m looking at DS and it’s appealing. Especially eliminating the hunger factor. My high weight was 283 lowest 171 current 205. My questions are is it too soon to start thinking about revising and if not would you all do it again. I love my sleeve no complications at all and an easy recovery wondering how recovery is vs the sleeve. Thanks in advance!

Hello all! I had the Duodenal Switch surgery on March 26th and a little less than a week ago I switched from liquids to soft food. Since then, I’ve been getting extremely bad headaches after eating dinner sometimes. I was thinking that maybe it could be the salt content but I’ve had saltier meals and didn’t get a headache. I checked my blood pressure after eating tonight when I got a headache and it was low. I also feel like when I do get these headaches it’s when I accidentally overeat a little so maybe that has something to do with it. If this persists I’ll contact my doctor but I wanted to get some ideas on what it might be first. Thanks in advance!

As you know, DS patients have been told that they will experience terrible smelling gas and bowel movements post-op. However, that's not what I want to address. What I've noticed is the overall odor of my body chemistry. Every single fluid that leaves my body has the same distinct, dusty smell about it. I can't describe it. It's kind of like dirty sand. My urine and everything else that's fluid that leaves my body has this odor. I'm wondering if my saliva also has this smell. Has anyone else noticed this? I'm 11 weeks post-op and honestly I can't stand this smell. Will this go away after I'm in maintenance? I've asked my family (specifically my husband) if they…

Odd question, but what the hey..... I'm 48 years old and have never been a coffee drinker. I always got my morning caffeine fix with a couple of Cokes (diet, but sometimes regular.) But this week I'm trying to kick the soda habit - for the 25th time - and as part of that, I'm thinking about taking up coffee. All of my loved ones are obsessed, so there must be something to it, right? Day one discovery: no way I can start with black coffee. Uggg! I've been fine - in fact enjoyed - Starbucks Frappicionos on occasion, but let's face it...those are basically milk shakes, with a ton of cream and sugar. Clearly sugar is a no-no for DS'ers, but what about the …

Howdy! I'm visiting from the pre-op RNY side of the forum. The more I read about the DS surgery, the more appealing it sounds vs. RNY. It was never offered as an option at my surgeon's office when I had my first consult, but it's mentioned on their website so I know one of the 2 surgeons there must perform it. I like the idea of preserving the Pylorus valve and removing the majority of the stomach area that creates Ghrelin (hunger hormone) PLUS bypassing part of the intestines. I'll be reading heavily in this forum from now on to learn more, but if anyone has some words of advice, encouragement or warning that you feel should be known, please send it my way! Thanks!

Hello, I am new here. I am now 5 days post op BPD/DS. I was told it would be a 1 or 2 night hospital stay. It turned into 5 nights! Today is my first day home. I am so VERY sore, exhausted and feeling regretful. I know it will get easier but can’t help but be hesitant that that may not be the case. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the post op diet schedule as well as the types of foods allowed. Also concerned about getting all these supplements down all day everyday! I will probably purchase the vitamin patch. Haven’t really gotten all the math figured out as to whether or not it would be money saving but I don’t think I will much care if I have to spend a bit more fo…

I am only a few days away from surgery. I am so confused with what I can and cannot eat the first 2 weeks - some say jello is okay, some say no. I am starving on my liquid diet right now. From all of you who have had this already, do the hunger and cravings really go away? I need desperately to lose the weight, and this is my last hurrah. I am 60 yrs old and have been on so many diets, including lap band, that I am successful with at first and then gain the weight back. Is this going to feel any differently? I know it is is up to me, but I wanted to know really how much you think the surgery works on these items. Thx so much

I had the sleeve done five years ago. I got pregnant eight months after. I lost 88 pounds from the sleeve and gain to 60 back. November 14, 2017 I had the single anastomosis duodenal switch. I lost 14 pounds the first two weeks and have not lost but have gained 1 pound in the last two weeks. For those of you out there that I’ve had this done has it been successful for you? Is the weight-loss slow and steady? Can you share some of your experiences

I am 6 weeks post surgery as I write this. Had a Loop DS performed on 12/17/18 from an original sleeve surgery 12/26/15 all performed by Dr. Basil Yurcisin at Garden State Bariatrics whom I recommend highly if you live in or near New Jersey. Originally lost nearly 70 lbs with the original Gastric sleeve but put on a bit more than half of it back before deciding to get more aggressive and choose a Loop DS. Since 12/17, I am down close to 40 lbs. For those reading this, there is a difference between a traditional DS and a loop DS. I grappled with this because I wanted the maximum weight loss effect. In the end, I settled for the Loop DS. because I was told the difference in…

I am 9 months post op.. so far so good... lost a lot of weight so far and I feel great... still working on seeing my surgeon for the follow up so he can evaluate my first set of blood work tests. My primary gave me an iron prescription plus told me to take added vitamin A. Anyway, I eat what I want , and definitely in small amounts. The only exercise I get is walking but I really need to start weight training to build up some muscle for my slightly flabby skin. Its not really bad but bad enough to where I would like tone up before thinking of surgery . My surgeon said don't do surgery until 18 months after weight loss surgery... Which means I still have another 9 month…

Any advice on how calm my husband's anxiety? My DS (revision from rny 2012) is already scheduled for early Monday Jan 7. He didn't show any sign's of anxiety until literally last night. Tossed and turned leaving both of us restless. He didn't have any anxiety the first time around for me. And it is too late for any dr visit for prescription meds. I think he tried to hold out as much as possible thinking his feelings would pass. But as the day gets nearer it got to be much.I've tried to reassure him I am in great hands and I am doing everything I need to do to prepare preop. He understands I'm doing this (again) for my health, but since there is more risk involved, he can'…

Hi everyone ! My name is Gia and I’m currently in the process of doing the Duodenal Switch. I’m 20 years old. 5’3 and about 345 lbs right now. I have been approved by my insurance but I need two more tests done before I get scheduled. I have a few questions for people who have already had the surgery , anything you wish you knew before you did it ? Anything I should remember to keep my head in the game ? Tips on the dealing / getting over the worst things ? Tips on mental health maintenance ? I’m sorry for asking so much considering I haven’t gotten the surgery yet but I’m doing a notebook beforehand. Thank you in advance !

How many people here have had or are having bariatric surgery to help with chronic pain? I have 3 bulging discs in my back and severe sciatica. I have been to several surgeons and they said there is nothing they can do about it. Also my knees are shot (at least it feels like it) My GP has been talking to me about this surgery for the past couple of years because of my pain. I have very little quality of life right now. I can't stand more than a minute or 2 or walk 15 or 20 steps without being in horrible pain. I use a walker sometimes but when you are shopping it just gets in the way. i shop almost exclusively at stores that have scooters to ride in and sometimes …

I have BCBS IL and I'm trying to get approval for a revision from RNY to Duodenal Switch. I am 290lbs with a BMI of 46.8. On 08/24/2018 my paperwork was submitted. I called my insurance company on 09/10/2018 and I was denied since BCBS IL coverage states that the Duodenal Switch is "not medically necessary for people with a BMI under 50.0". I was told it was in a "pre-determination" status and my surgeon can call for a "peer to peer" with a BCBS IL doctor in which my doctor could argue that it is medically necessary. Has anyone with BCBS IL been in my situation? Has anyone with BCBS IL gotten a Duodenal Switch and was under 50.0 BMI? Even better has anyone with …

Let me start with some simple statements. No, I don’t know the length of my comment channel, I used to, but that doesn’t define my surgery and therefore takes up ZERO brain capacity. Yes, if given the choice to have the surgery or not have the surgery, I would do it again. Yes, working out at a lower weight is easier, but it still sucks, and I still hate working out. ?️♀️ One day you’ll forget about your surgery until after you’ve eaten too much movie theatre popcorn. ?You will pay for this mistake for at least 24 hours and swear to never do it again, until the next time you go to the movies and do it again. Men…

Hello! I am 8 months out after my duodenal switch operation, I feel great! but now its time for a colonoscopy I am 51 years old so it's time. Ughhhh anyone have one after operation? If so any concerns? I am little nervous because I don't want them messing anything up concerning this operation. They say they wont know what kind of scar tissue i will have but they will see all that once they do the procedure. The prep will be hard since its hard to take down large amounts of liquids ... but the doctor told me to just take my time and start it earlier that day before . Again Im really nervous, I am just afraid of something getting messed up while they are in there…

I had DS in March of 2014. I was 290 pounds at the time, down from my all-time high of 328 pounds pre-insurance requirements. I'm 5'3" tall, single, female, and in a demanding graduate school program which will wrap up in May of 2017.I am now at 215 pounds and have hovered around this weight for several months now. I am disappointed in myself for only having lost 75 pounds though when it has been almost 2 years since my surgery. I would like to get down to a healthy BMI and do not care as much about the size that I am, but I do want to get rid of my "hanging apron" stomach as I think it really messes with my self-esteem. I know that others have had much more dramatic wei…

Surgery is set for this Monday 10/29. Part of me wants to make it public bc I'd like encouragement but another part of me don't bc I don't want ppl scrutinizing everything I eat.

Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster, pre-op patient here in Raleigh, NC. I am about to be scheduled for DS in the next month or so and have a long-shot question about AFTER surgery symptoms. Since I was a teen, I have suffered with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) pretty much from the crotch up. I am heat intolerant and will sweat even in the cold of the winter. I have to have a fan on me pretty much all the time or the lack of air movement overheats me and I am soon drenched from head to...almost toe. My father is, or was, the same way. His appendix burst years ago and he had most of his small intestines removed as a result of the sepsis; lo and behold, he …

Hi Everyone, I’m a lurker here...first time posting. I’m 8 weeks out post op from my DS. I lost 25 lbs before the surgery; right out of surgery bc of the fluids I gained 11 lbs, - lost that and an additional 23 lbs for a total of 48 so far. I get very frustrated by the scale. I am seeing differences in my clothes and health, but I want to scale to move faster than it is. I was thinking the weight would come off quicker. I basically eat 6 Snacks a day. Usually hit my 80-100 grams of Protein every day. Calories range from 700-900ish. I’m wondering if I’m eating too much? Is this normal?
