Let's Get The Duodenal Switch People Together

While most people are familiar with lapband surgery and gastric bypass surgery, there are two other surgeries that are "gaining" popularity. One is the vertical sleeve. The other is DS surgery which is the most complex and is usually reserved for the most obese population. Some people have DS surgery in 2 parts (the first being the vertical sleeve) while others have it in one surgery. Some have an open surgery and some have a lap. approach.

So, to those who have had DS surgery and to those who are considering it, let's get this forum up and running!

  • Are you a Sleever in maintenance? Having a hard go of it, even though you are following your plan? That was my experience, and why I have elected to re-sleeve and have the second phase DS, which promi

Welcome Mommabearn,

Congratulations on making a good choice. Who will be doing your procedure?

Hello, I had the D.S. procedure done 4 weeks ago tomorrow. Spent a few days in the hospital, had a great deal of discomfort which is to be expected. Once I got home, had an issue with lactose intolerance, my NUT had me switch to pureed foods which helped and now to date I've lost 41 lbs. Next weekend I will be allowed to start soft foods.

All in all, it's been a positive experience.

All I can find in Australia is BILIO PANCREATIC DIVERSION

Is that the same as DS???

Not necessarily. It's the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch that's done nowadays. The biliopancreatic diversion (BPD) alone used to be done, but it turned out there were some really tough side effects to it.

Make sure you're talking about the BPD/DS (biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch).

Have you spoken with Dr Nottle? He's in Queensland, I believe, and is known for doing the conventional (not SIPS/SADI/single anastomosis) BPD/DS.

My problem is that I have maintained my 120 pound weight loss but want to lose more and don’t know how to do it in a healthy manner. I am open to any good tips on how to take off weight. Will eat nothing but shakes if it will keep me healthy. Also want to continue working out. Any help please!!!

i had vertical gastrectomy with ds and shortened common channel about 13 years ago. I have maintained 120 pound weight loss but want to lose. My bloodwork is very good. I now have two new knees and two reconstructed feet since weight loss so I exercise too.

Suggestions please!!!

@MardellShakes are definitely not the way to go for a DSer. Yes, you can use them as supplements but not as your entire menu. Your best bet is to eat a ton of protein. Then drink a lot of liquid and limit carbs severely.

Good choice.

I wanted ds but insurance won't cover plus very few places in Australia even do it... I've heard overall it is the most aggressive and best weight loss??

Definitely the most aggressive. It’s the malabsorption.
