Well, I saw my surgeon today for pre op. All my labs and such were great. I signed all my consents and am a little nervous because according to my surgeon, I had to sign for my gastric bypass AND gastric sleeve. He said because I've had a couple previous surgeries there could be scaring that may make the bypass to hard to do, so he said if he can't do the bypass he will do the sleeve in its place. UGH! Now I'm worrying that I won't get my bypass. My luck lately has sucked. I went on a trip with my daughters while they were visiting me. On our way to a tour of Austin, Texas, I didn't see a dip in the sidewalk and fell. Long story short, I broke my right foot on 6…

  6. Started by freelee,

Before my RNY two years ago, I never really drank coffee. Then suddenly I got into a routine of going regularly (ie once or twice a day). My surgeon says it's okay as long as I am getting in my protein and vitamins. But even though a venti skinny vanilla latte has protein (and carbs!) I admit to overdoing it with the sugar free vanilla syrup. My cold "go to" drink is a coffee-light frappachino, with sf vanilla added also. Are frappachinos considered CARBONATED?? Or is it just crushed ice? Is the air in it a bad idea? What are your opinions on and options for Starbuck's drinking after gastric bypass?

  7. I've been struggling with the best way to discuss/explain my surgery with my kids. I have a 17 year old son and 11 year old daughter that I want to make sure understand what's going on, but I don't want them to worry. I also want to be sensitive to the issues of dieting and health in general and not over discuss it with them. I just want to be sure both understand the importance of heathy diet and exercise. Neither of my children have weight issues and both are very active. Any feedback on how others have approached this with their children would be much appreciated.

I had a colonoscopy a couple of years ago (I had IBS) before I turned 50. Everything came back fine. My wife just had one last week and I had forgotten how much of the prep liquid and water you have to drink (and the amount of time you have to drink it in). Has anyone had a colonoscopy after having RYN? Do they cut down on the amount of prep liquid that you have to drink? I have like 6 or 7 years left before I need to have it done again and I was just curious.

When you couldn't pack or take your food... I travel for work and on the rare occasion I need to buy meals at airports or on the road when I can't get what I need from a grocery store. I'm 8 weeks out from surgery and would like your ideas on what you have picked up at airports or fast food that is compliant. I can't tolerate chicken breast yet, so that limits me. So far I've bought a premade turkey/cheese sandwich and ditched the bread or bought the hummus/carrot/cucumber box. The only fast food I can think of that is compliant is Wendy's chili (which probably has too much fat). (I'm fine when I can get to a Whole Foods or grocery store.)

So, my scale, the little devil, bas been stuck at 205 since roughly 6/21...the dreaded week 3 stall was not a myth, y'all. My surgery was 6/1 so I hit that stall right at the 3 week mark... BUT... And I may be crazy here... I feel like I am losing inches instead of weight? Is that even possible?! Can one lose onches without losing weight? I have also read that fat is "redistributing". Is that also possible? Because I feel that I went from being a blob to having some shape to my body. Clothes fit better, I am wearing pants I have not put on for a long time... I started my journey at 245lbs, now 205. Only 40lbs lost. While significant, I still have another 60 to…

  16. Hi everyone, So today I am 7 months post of RNY. I have lost 57 pounds since my pre-op diet. I am so far past the excitement and hope I had when the weight was coming off during the first 2 months. Since then though, I have lost a total of only 10 pounds in 5 months (!)- I don't even really know what to say about that- I voiced my concerns to my surgeon's office at 2, 3, 4, 5 months but they keep telling me to just follow the plan and it will fall off- they won't give me a calorie count of where I should be- just 60g of protein in 2 shakes and then 3 meals of 4oz each. Obviously protein first, then veggies- but they want me eating fruit and whole grain carbs too. Obviousl…

Is anyone having trouble moving to foods with a tad more texture? I chew little bites of chicken until it's really mashed but I feel like an air bubble is trapped in my esophagus and I can't burp it out. Then I get the hiccups. Starts to hurt and eventually I have to throw up a little. I'm 5 weeks out from surgery and sick of the pure bland soft foods like cottage cheese, soups and refried beans. I hope this phase passes. I did go to my surgeon yesterday and have lost a total of 41 pounds!

Please tell me that I'm not the only one? Im having RNY due to severe GERD. It's completely controlling my life at this pint. I lost over 100lbs with the band in 2007, the band slipped, gained 70lbs, had VSG, lost 30 of that, began having serious GERD, pouch disfigured, another operation last summer, gained all 100lbs, I can only eat crackers at this point, and now I'm getting ready for RNY. I'm discouraged and frustrated at this point. Anyone have a similar journey?

I just endured one of the hardest weeks since my surgery. Week 3 has been hard. The constant nausea, the constipation, the stall, the constant disgusting taste in my mouth.. You name it. I felt hlrrible, discouraged, upset, depressed... And then, last night, I made chili. I swear this chili made my soul return to my body. Not only was I able to eat a lot more, but it also sat in my pouch quite nicely without causing me any pain or discomfort. I was even able to sleep better because of it. So, if you are struggling to get protein or any type of food in and keep it down, I could not recommend chili enough!

Hi all, I'm three weeks away from having my bypass done and, partly prompted by reading here, I've been thinking about what my ultimate goal is. I have the BIG goals that motivated me to take the step - a longer life, more activity and fun with my young son, but they're pretty abstract. Right now I don't have an absolute target weight, until 4 or 5 or so years ago I was around 220 (I have to convert from KGs so it is approximate) so my weight now feels strange and alien anyway. I imagine I would be good somewhere between 160 and 200, which his still a pretty big gap. Oddly I have clothes that I would like to wear that are much more of a motivation (some in …

So I came across a blog about the importance of gastric bypass patients wearing medical alert bracelets. It stated that the risk from things like NSAID's and the insertion of blind feeding tubes can really hurt you. Hi Everyone, Hope I can get some suggestions. My surgery was this past Monday, June 12th. Doc says things went perfectly! I had the clear liquid diet for two days post opt and now I am supposed to be on pureed foods for two weeks. I am struggling. I am having to drink more protein shakes than I want otherwise I can get even to the 1/2 way goal of 78-90 grams of protein a day. The fluid intake - I will have to work up to 100 fl. ounces a day. I am getting to 60 but feel like I'm floating. Good news - type 2 diabetes is unbelievably in control. No meds since surgery and levels are great.
