My RNY Gastric Bypass Surgery My name is Carla! I live in NJ I'm a 35 year old married mother of two. My weight loss journey started in March 2008. My son was one year old and I decided I no longer wanted to live my 300lb unhealthy lifestyle! I wanted to live to be able to see my Son grow and I wanted to be able to play with him and not watch from the side lines. I had my gastric bypass surgery Sept 15 2008. After the usual Two days in the hospital I was feeling good and diacharged. Only to return to the hospital at 4am in severe pain. I had a leak. Had to do another surgery and recovery was very painful I stayed in the hospital for three weeks. With that being said I wo…

I'm doing a Gastric Bypass study. At the last study I got an endoscopy so they can take out tissue from my intestines. It went well and all and I understand what happened and all about their process.... But before doing that, they took my measurements, blood tests/samples and checked my heart rate/blood pressure. Then after they did all of this, they gave me a paper with all of my results on it, on the paper it said my body type was standard.... What is the standard body type for women? Surprisingly google didn't know and gave me information about things I already knew, I.e. The many different body types women may have. Nothing I clicked on said what the standard body typ…

Well yesterday was an adventure for me. I was at the local water park celebrating a birthday for a friends daughter. We ate before we went and I made sure to drink lots and lots of water all morning and even took my 40oz keep cold bottle with me! I thought I was prepared for a day in the sun and AZ heat....man was I wrong!! Was waiting to go on my second slide, 75% of the way up the stairwell and started to get dizzy. Next thing I know I'm sitting on the stairwell surrounded by lifeguards, EMTs and have a soaking wet shirt on my shoulders. They took me back to the EMT office to check my vitals and my sugar and blood pressure were normal but my heart rate was jumping back …

7 years ago, almost to the day, my Lap Band was placed. I have hated my band for a long time. I was in between my junior and senior year in college and my mom was very insistent that this is what I needed to be able to get a good job on the other side of my Senior year. She talked about it non-stop and eventually I decided to just go ahead and do it, because if I didn't I would have had to face her disappointment. I did alright with it for a couple months, and I lost a little weight but at one point I stopped making appointments with my surgeon and then I just didn't go back. About a year after my surgery, I got a call from them that I needed to come in and have it check…

Seems like a no brainer, but I'm having difficulty remembering to chew slowly and thoroughly when eating. I am preop and just trying to get into the habit now. I find that food loses its appeal when it's chewed to the point of purée consistency so I have a lifelong habit of taking bigger bites and swallowing it all at once after chewing a few times. I believe it's a texture thing so I'm trying to get my brain beyond the thought of chewing until puréed things like salad, chicken, and anything else that my brain feels is gross to be chewed "too much". I recognize I have to change around the entire way I eat things from sizes of bites to how to chew and swallow bits at a ti…

Help, please, I don't know what's wrong. I had gastric bypass surgery 10 days ago. I am depressed and feel pulled in two directions. I want to get up and do things but I also feel the want to sit and do nothing. All I want is pizza (insert any food.) And I keep thinking about foods I cannot have and miss. Sometimes I feel the surgery was a mistake and should've waited. I am following the rules. Only broke once and are 1 cracker. I feel lost. I am not in danger of hurting myself or anything like that but I am losing my will power and feeling sorry for myself. Please tell me this is normal or someone else can relate. Where do I go now.. i do have a therapist and psychia…

Feeling alone and discouraged so I'm walking away from everything and everyone. Don't know why I feel this way and I pray and ask God to help me and to guide me but I must can't see or hear what he is telling me. Well maybe I'm just dumb or maybe he isn't saying anything to me. All I know is that I'm tired of this feeling of being alone and people not talking to me unless they want or need something. Time to leave

How much protein, calories, and carbs are recommended? There should be a consensus! I see everyone on this site with a different daily amount.. I asked my surgical team, including the nurse and nutritionist, and they all say not to count calories, or carbs or protein! Just eat a balanced meal of 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food per meal and I will be okay.. I prefer to follow a high protein, low carb meal plan... Apparently they haven't heard of this.? Advice.. ?

We all know that getting plenty of sleep is important to normal functioning and health. And sleep deprivation has been associated with an increased risk of obesity in both animals and humans — it results in hyperphagia (increased appetite) and weight gain. Dr. Hee-Jin IM of the Korea University Anam Hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea and colleagues focused on the amount of weekend sleep extension (catch-up sleep) that approximately 2200 adults reported getting on a regular basis. The BMIs of the weekend catch up sleepers were significantly lower than that of the folks who did not catch up on weekends — 22.8 vs 23.1 respectively, after controlling for age, gen…

I'm so upset right now. I just went for my 3 month appointment and surgeon said I was right on track so happy about that. I'm unhappy because he said most patients stop losing after a year to a year and a half. This confused me. So I called just now to speak to a nurse to clarify my confusion. She said that most people's bodies get comfortable with their weight at that point and plateau. If I'm still eating healthy and exercising how will I not lose weight? She also said most people don't ever make it to goal weight and average weight loss is 70-100 lbs, and that I will probably never see 150. My starting weight was 379 the day of surgery. That would only bring me to 279…

So, I have come to the conclusion that this surgery is like being pregnant all over again...you are always tired, everything hurts... Hello everyone, I'm just here wondering what the process was for others. I am currently starting my 4th week post op. So far I've lost approximately 16 pounds. For me I guess I feel like maybe this is significantly low... but others tell me not. My question for everyone is when did your weight loss begin to pick up? I'm on solids now, and can barely eat 1 or 2 bites before I'm full. I'm also having trouble getting my water in, just because when I drink it still hurts. The water gets stuck in my esophagus before finally going into my stomach. So most days I'm only getting in 40oz of water. I'm hoping it gets better!! Pre-op I was peeing 6-7 times a day, now I'm lucky if I'…

I exercise I eat right I drink my water I get my protein in. But lately meaning the last two weeks I've been snacking like crazy. And not on the best foods. Its been a mix of fruit vegetables and cookies or ice cream. Why?!.... I don't know. I have been extremely busy and under some stress lately but head hunger is getting the best of me. I have exercised four times within the last two weeks which is horrible. Idk why I'm snacking like this and the bad part is I feel so guilty afterwards because I know I shouldnt be s…

I'm so happy to a found this app, there are so many people here who are in my shoes, today I scheduled my appointment with my doctor to have a consultation and decide which surgery is going to be best for me. I'm very lucky to where my health insurance is covering the procedure, and at 410 pounds I really want to be able to live a full life of health! I've never had anything like this done before and I am extremely nervous. I'm just really happy that there's a form where I can turn to for emotional support.

I am feeling so down today. First, I keep waking up with the most disgusting taste in my mouth, it's bad enough that it keeps waking me up at night. When I spit it out it is the most disgusting greenish sticky "something" that makes me gag every time. I read somewhere that it could be bile. Os that even possible? Then, I decide to weigh myself and, of course, the scale went up a smidge. Right, only a smidge but when you are already down a smidge is like a ton. I told myself I was not going to worry about the scale but here I am. Later, I end up puking the only two or three bites of eggs I had this morning. I am beginning to sense a pattern... Apparently…

Hi all, I'm two days post op/still in hospital. I'm wondering if any of you also had high heart rate after surgery Breathing is fine, no nausea, no pain, urinating fine, no bleeding, walking fine, not short of breath, literally just have high heart rate. I DO get anxious in hospitals and I am 5'8 and weigh 330 - my weight does play a factor in my heart rate. It's gotten pretty high at times, around 138 but most it's been around 98 - 108. Thoughts??? Should I be worried???

So I had my surgery on 5/25, right after I was freaked out that I had blood clots... then I thought my incision wouldn't stop leaking. Now I have a burning sensation on my skin to the right side of my big incision which is right above my belly button. I also can't bend down or lay on my left side or it'll hurt. I am going to my doctor in 2 days but has anyone experienced this burning tingling feeling on their stomach?

Hi, I'm new here and seriously considering a band to bypass revision or a band to sleeve revision. I would like to know why you all chose the bypass. I'm on the fence between sleeve and bypass and just would like some first hand experiences and reasons why you chose this method in hopes that it may help me decide on which would be best for me. Thank in advance!

Hello everyone I am 18 month post op and if many of you have heard my stories will understand that I been through a lot since I had Surgury. Unfortunately I have had many complications and recently I was put on TPN which is iv nutrition for the second time. The reason I had gastric bypass was because I had severe erosion in my esophagus and had esophagitis and my surgeon told me that I could develop esophagus cancer. I was also overweight for my height. I am 4"11 and I was 189 pounds before Surgury. I would aspirate in my sleep and had the worse reflux ever. Now I have been very depress and feel so much regret since I lost so much weight. The surgeon is trying to figure o…

I know people ask about this a lot on here but since google was useless to my situation, I figured I'd ask about it here. I'm wondering if I'm at a stall. After 6 weeks of weight loss, everything stopped. I've been stuck at 196 and is fluctuating between this weight and 197. So far I've lost 26 lbs in the first month. This month 3 lbs. When I went to my two month follow up on the 8th, I asked the nurse and she said that she didn't think I was stalling... Even though she may be right, the answer is not convincing because nothing is changing. I haven't lost many inches either. I was expecting the stall to happen after 3 weeks, not 6. I'm not sure about what I should do to …

I'm 10.5 mos out, I'm down 100 lbs, and I need to lose 54 lbs more. I feel like I keep stalling, like right now. Not sure why. I'm so frustrated that I dont even want to eat anymore (I still do). Had conversion from band to bypass on 12/9, had to go back in for lower intestinal constriction surgery on 12/14 and spent 3 more nights in the hospital. When I got out of the hospital, I weighed 180 (25 pounds lost on milk diet and during hospitalization of a total f 7 nights). One month later I weigh about 179. I do get about 80-90 grams of Protein, drink plenty Water, exercise, light weigh-lifting at gym,and I am eating regular food now, which I carefully measure. Calorie intake of 800-900 per day. Tracking everything. So...never get sick, never feel nauseous, never feel like I have hit capacity, even with just plain 2-3 oz. chicken or tuna. I read somewhere that my …

I have been able to follow up the diet the doctor gave me for the most part. Considering that this is my first time eating pureed foods after surgery I think I did pretty good...but...for dinner I made myself grits, which was in the approved food list of foods for the first two weeks after surgery. Even though they were delicious I was able to take in about 2tbsp before feeling full. Half an hour later I had a sip of water and OMG I felt the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. It felt like the food and water mixed together right in the centet of my chest and they weighed about a ton. The burping was unreal and the pain even worse. I know this is common but wow was I n…

Has anyone on here managed to continue taking Seroquel after gastric bypass and still lose weight ? I'm very, very worried that Seroquel is going to have a negative effect on my bypass. I've tried searching for info on the internet with no success.

Hi there, I was banded for 6 years, had the band removed on April 5 and will be Bypassed on July 19. During the 6 years I was banded I suffered from terrible constipation and two months prior to the band removal I had a bowel obstruction requiring me to go to hospital in an ambulance which was very scary. Since the band was removed, my issues have become much better, although I still have some trouble at times despite my fibre and water intake being extremely high....well over 90 grams of fibre per day in the form of Bran for breakfast and bran muffins that I eat at afternoon tea time, along with three servings of Benefibre a day. I have a three litre water bottle…
