I am in the waiting room at Emory Hospital-Atlanta. I am so hungry! Will be in the best sleep ever in a little while. I'm anxious about this. I have had mult abdominal surgeries and was never really nervous. I had an illness a yr. ago and was in the hospital. I was coded because I went into renal & respiratory failure. That worries me now, but more than anything, my oldest daughter is pregnant with our first grand baby, a boy. That has been the center of my thoughts for the last few months. Will check in afterwards. Good luck and prayers for me, please! Carol

Hi all, I had the sleeve done in Sept 2013. I've been having severe GERD/reflux since, with barium swallows showing instantaneous backflow up my esophagus. I'm tired of the constant heartburn, so I'm having the bypass procedure done next month. Anyone else go through this? How did the bypass procedure compare to the sleeve - pain wise, recovery time, post-op diet, etc? Also curious about additional weight loss... SW was 234, GW was 155. I reached 147, but CW is now 180 (sleeve has stretched and I admittedly haven't adhered to diet very well).

I have T1 diabetes but insulin resistance combined with bad eating habits have brought me to bypass. I am scheduled for May 2nd and start a 2 wk pre-op liquid diet tomorrow. I was instructed to decrease my insulin by half (I wear a pump) and adjust from there as needed. I am so worried about low blood sugars post op. Can anyone share their experiences?

Hi I'm 14 month PO gastric bypass . About a week ago I started having intense sharp pain in my lower left abdomen and then a couple days later in my upper left abdomen also. It seems to happen after I eat and/or drink and not every time ...The pain can last for up to an hour....CT scan was normal. I have no other symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea etc. I feel fine other then those occasional sharp pains here and there. Next step is endoscopy but I'm holding off for a bit to see if the miralax and stool softener helps. Just curious if anyone else has had this? Thanks!

  14. I had band to RNY conversion 5-days ago, on April 10th. I know I can't do this alone and I want a mentor and/or a weigh loss buddy. You don't have to live near me or be in my state (MA). I want someone to be accountable to and I need support. Who here has the time to help someone out? I'm a reasonably positive person, I plan to start exercising as soon as I'm cleared by my surgeon, and I want to be compliant with the eating plan my surgeon wants me to be on. I know I can't do this alone. Anyone? Someone?

  15. Hey guys!!! I follow a couple of people on social media that has had some form of weight loss surgery. They just had a meet up in New York and had a blast. I think it would be so nice if a group of us with the similar weight and surgery dates get together and a year from now plan a meet up. In the meantime we can create a group chat (groupme, WhatsApp, text) and just share our experiences, before and after, recipes and etc. Who's down???? I think a cool meet up location would be Virgin Islands [emoji847][emoji847]

  18. Good Morning! As I mentioned, I am terribly disappointed and confused. I had my bypass last August at a weight of 370. Today I weighed 317. I've been as low as 302. Since the very beginning, I never felt much restriction. In some cases, I can eat as much as I'd like. I drink my Water. I walk 5x a week. My diet could be cleaner, but it wasn't horrible until recently. I guess I started feeling sorry for myself and started eating crappy. Has anyone else had an issue with the amount of food they could eat? I read about people living off a golf ball sized amount of food - and at the moment that seems crazy to me! Also - does anyone have any suggestions? Hav…

  19. So I am 14 mos post-op RNY and I have a very large ventral hernia that desperately needs to be repaired. My surgeon is strongly urging me to have a panniculectomy done when I have the hernia repair. I really have no desire to have the excess skin removed at this point, it doesn't bother me at all but my surgeon claims that that is the right thing to do. He said hernia repair may fail if I don't have the skin removed. Has anyone else been in this situation?

Struggling!!! A whole year has gone by already and I have received more negative than positive from family and so called friends. Now I am concerned and feel ashamed because I have not lost as much as I should have. I did not even celebrate my first surgerversery (sp). Just healing from two major surgeries at the same time (RNY & gallbladder) was enough but now I realize that the negative reactions sent me more into a depressive state. My starting weight was over 500, maybe there is a willing buddy out there who has been successful with losing a massive amount of weight too.

If you use an Apple watch, how helpful is it for tracking the amount of calories burned throughout your day? Can it calculate calories burned while lifting weights? Do you use it to track your heart rate during workouts? I have about 25 lbs left to lose and I am stuck. I calculated my BMR and if I can figure out accurately the calories I burn at work and at the gym I think I will have a better handle on how many calories I should be eating to see the scale move.

  25. I'm having a very hard time getting myself back on track. I had RNY in June 2015, lost 70ish pounds (248-180) starting putting some weight back on in March/April 2016 after having emergency surgery for an eternal hernia, then putting my dog to sleep, which was devastating. I kept it at 185 for a while but falling into old habits caused the weight to come back slowly. I've been back and forth for months now. This morning I was back up to 203.5 and am worried. I'm working with my therapist and a new NUT to get to the root of why I eat. One huge issue is my history of going on and off diets. I'm used to either restrictive eating or binge eating and not much balance or mainte…

Almost 9 months post-op and I'm well below goal weight. I continue to lose 1-2 pounds a week and am right on the edge of underweight. I saw my surgeon on Friday and he said that as long as I feel okay and he doesn't think I'm anorexic then I just need to "stop losing weight" and everything will be okay. See you in July. *sigh* I'm tired of being told I'm too skinny, that I need to eat, that I need to stop losing weight. Believe me, I'm trying. At this point, if I gained 10 pounds I would be happy. My capacity is okay but dumping is an issue with fats and sugars. Insurance won't pay for acarbose. I pack in as much Protein and good fats as I can every day but I can sti…

I think I have tried everything I can try and couldn't solve this problem. I've increased my probiotic intake, used charcoal pills, simeticone, changing diet, herbal teas.... I've tried it all and with no success.. and it's not only the problem of trapped gas that I have but that my farts smell so awful that I sometimes cry from embarrassment that it causes me in public or between family and friends.. Prior to surgery, I had sleep apnea. But that condition was quickly resolved after my RNY gastric bypass surgery 3 years ago and stayed in remission ever since. While sleep apnea accounts for more than three million cases in the U.S., Insufficient sleep, which is now so widespread that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently called it a public health problem, plagues between 50- to 70 million Americans. So it sounds like the CDC coined a new phrase. So what do they recommend for this new condition? The National Sleep Foundation recommends adopting healthy sleep hygiene habits in order to improve overall quality of life. Among those: skippi…

I am pre-op for RnY surgery, most likely having my surgery in early October this year. I started to have terrible lower back pain late last year, and since then it has become pretty much constant every day. I wanted to see if anyone who had back pain previously and has gone through the surgery noticed a decrease in pain. I am assuming my pain is probably related to my weight. I have had an MRI and seen a back specialist and he said I have a perfectly healthy spine. I am hoping that one of the outcomes of my WLS is a reduction in this pain. Has anyone else experienced this and had less pain once some of the weight has come off after surgery? Thanks!

Just had my one year post-RNY followup with surgeon. Was disappointed to see I gained a few pounds after having a stall for 6 months. After reviewing labs we discussed what was different in my diet and routine. I recently had difficulty with arthritis and loose matter behind my kneecap preventing me from my exercise of walking. Surgeon recommended I eliminate all bad carbs (breads, pasta, rice, etc) while I am not able to walk (start PT tomorrow after fluid drained from knee and a cortisone shot). I am pleased to report that I've lost about 4lbs already. I am motivated to stay away from the bad carbs and eager to begin my PT.
