My Dr did not require one as well with non-open surgery.

My original VBG of 20 years ago did require one and I used it for 3 weeks, to allow for healing of skin and muscles that were cut.

I didn't have an open surgery but I still wore one and continue to wear a tight spanx. I go to support groups and before surgery someone gave me that advice and I stuck with it. Until or if I do have the skin removed it helps me hold a nice hour glass figure.
