So... November 2016, picked insurance that finally covered weight loss surgery. Something Ive been thinking about for a few years already. 55 years old and i shudder when I look at the scale.... 350.4 and 5' 8". Being tall, ive always thought i carried my weight well, but pictures over the last few years, that I'm even in, tell another story, the real one. Met with my PCP on March 3rd this year. Agreed i was good candidate and congratulated me on taking the 1st step, asking for help. Referred me to metabolic clinic on April 5th. Second approval to move forward! So happy, yet confused & scared. May 12th saw the bariatric surgeon. Asked more questions and got mo…

Today was my first encounter with someone asking me this. I was at work & just rambling about weight loss & how many ounces an average stomach can hold. Then out of the blue, a coworker asked me the dreaded question that I was hopeful I could avoid. DID YOU HAVE THE LAPBAND???♀️ Now I had already prepared myself for when this question that I was avoiding was asked, but I had to step back & really ask myself 1. Do I fess up? 2. Ask them how is this of pertinence to them? 3. Do I lie? Oh oh my goodness, the only response I could muster was "Maby I did, maby I didn't". I don't know why I even give two damns …

Well I recently wrote about me having my surgery May 1, 2017 and I thought I was feeling fullness or gas. Well it was not neither, for my two weeks of me being home and doing my liquid diet I was unable to tolerate everything I tried to eat or drink. I could not even take down a 1/2 cup of broth it would take me all day to finish and still at night I would throw it out, jello was not even sticking, popsicles, protein shakes, and a 16.9 oz bottle of water would take me two days to drink. I would experience pain so bad and fullness from anything and me thinking it was fullness I didn't even think about going to the doctor yet knowing my first appt was coming up on May 11th …

I just had my consultation with the Bariatric surgeon, dietitian, insurance rep and coordinator. Beginning to gather all the information they need, get the clearances, etc. Not an easy task. I keep expecting the "thing" that will disqualify me. Any way to make this process less stressful? I'm in foreign territory- help!

I'm want to share my story so that any of you who are in the fence about this can have a full picture of what can happen both bad and good. I had gastric bypass dec 2014. My surgery was very very painful. The first two days I vomited a lot of blood and they had trouble getting my pain under control. They gave me a lot of narcotics. My dr, dr Thoman from Santa Barbara, barely checked on me. I was at cottage hospital in SB. I went home after five days in the hospital. I was going okay but then. The mental challenge of not eating was no joke. It was something I was so used to. They had given me a ton of narcotics and I kinda used those to cope with the emotions of not bein…

I was sleeved 8/08/2016 after a lifetime of being overweight and diabetic. I had a heart attack on my 47th birthday (2013) due to the havoc I had put my body through. Finally, once I got insured in 2014 and decided it was time to do something I had thought long and hard about. The surgery was about living, not vanity. There are obvious perks to weight loss but nothing beats the health benefits. No number on the scale, no clothes size. But, yes, that does feel good. It's just not my motivation. Living is. It's a tough process. I think everyone, after the fact, thinks "why the heck did I do this?" I sure did. But,luckily, it's too late then and you have to give it everyt…

Hello, I will share some progress pics soon I need to buy a new full length mirror since my 5 year old knocked mine down a few weeks ago. I had RNY on Oct 5, I believe I was 260 on surgery day. I made it into onderland at around 5.5 months post op but crept back up to 200-203 and have been stalled there since. I really am happy I had the surgery, I don't think I could have lost this weight on my own, since I've been trying unsuccessfully for years. I look and feel so much better! My confidence is up and my anxiety has gone down. I'm getting a lot of compliments and attention, which hasn't really happened to me in years, it feels great! The problem is…

I'm new here. I haven't had surgery but have started the process and already met with some nutritionist. I've been reading a lot about sleevers who have needed resetting and get back on track. I'm wondering if they're any seasoned sleevers out there who have kept the weight off for years.

I was sleeved June 11, 2014 and was sent home with an abdominal binder that I was to wear for at least a week. I can wear it as long as I feel I need to. I still wear it at night (to help me side sleep), and when I know I will be out for a long time. While in the hospital, the bariatric coordinator suggested that a compression garment might help in the long run with loose skin. She suggested the Spanx brand, or other similar types of garments. I am wondering if this is true? If it is, have any of you tried any? What is the best type to buy? Also, what size do I buy? I feel that they are too expensive to buy (and get a size we won 't be in long) if we are quickly shrinking…

Thought I'd give everyone a little peek into my life over the last few weeks... it's long, but I hope it helps anyone considering this surgery to look at all sides of it. Sorry I'm a rambler... I went to the initial seminar right after Christmas of 2016. Was a bit wishy washy on whether or not I wanted to move forward with surgery, but did agree to set up my initial appointments: group nutrition, individual nutrition and history / physical with the nurse practitioner. Everything went well pre-op, though I wasn't terribly impressed with the nutritionist at my practice. Not that she wasn't a good resource, just her personality got under my skin a bit. History: I've bee…

Im just starting out with my WLS journey and figure I'll post some info in case it's helpful to anyone else, since everyone else's stories and posts have been very helpful to me. I just left my first appointment with the surgeon. When I was first considering WLS I wanted the sleeve since it's less "severe" than the bypass, but once I started doing more research I didn't think I would be a good candidate due to my heartburn and reflux. After speaking with my doctor today he said that my reflux isn't bad enough to rule out the sleeve (it's well controlled with medication and diet changes and I never suffered with it until I gained all this weight) but that he would be fine …

I have lost 125 lbs as of this morning. I have been shopping in plus size stores my whole life. Even in middle school, I was plus sized. I am now at the point where I can go into any store and buy clothes and not generally the biggest in the standard store. I don't know about you guys, but I have a really hard time accepting my new size. I always take clothes that are too big into the dressing room. I'm always waiting for the sales associates in the normal stores to look at me and tell me that I don't belong in the store or to point out that I'm a fraud and am obviously in the wrong store. I know it is completely mental because I'm in small and medium tops and size…

I had my surgery May 1,2017 woke up in pain but the pain was from my throat they really did a number on my throat it was red and bloody. I'm still having pain it hurts to swallow which is kind of making it hard for me to do this liquid diet. But I force myself to eat but I notice when I sip my broth or tea I get a feeling in my stomach its like pressure rises up and then I might burp. I just was wondering if anyone else is or has experienced this. I don't know if its gas or am I full so I automatically just stop eating until I feel like I'm ready for more. I also think I'm not getting enough of something cause I feel lightheaded and very dry. Please help me I don't know w…

I had my sleeve Friday. It went very well. I was not prepared for the gas and nauseous, which was far worse that any if the surgery pain. Came home after two nights. Learning that I can't really lay down or it will make me feel nauseous. Other than that I feel great! Already down 11 pounds. Feeling optimistic and hope this positive momentum stays put.

So excited that I've finally gotten scheduled for surgery may 12! I can't believe it. I was getting so discouraged because it had take so long! Now I'm trying to decide what to say at work. I'm getting surgery.. just leave it at that...? Really it's no ones business but being a nurse I worry they will try to ask me to put surgery off... they've not done that to anyone else though. I had internal bleeding after surgery and almost ended up getting a blood transfusion after a emergency endoscopy to fix the problem. It was a scary thing and kept me in the hospital for 3 days but now I'm doing okay for the most part. I do have some on and off pain on my right side and my bottom lip is still a little numb from the endoscopy. I'm 16 days post-op.

hi, I need help! I had my gastric sleeve surgery in 2014 in Cincinnati and in the same time the doctor fixed an hernia in my stomach . Few weeks later i started having pain in my stomach it's like a hunger pain. I lost just few pounds and I stopped when went back to him complaining about the pain he said it's the gall bladder I did the exam and everything was fine. In mean while we had to move to another state, and the pain got worsened more and more. So after 4years I decided to go see an another bariatric surgeon and he did an odoscopy he came back with the result saying that I never had the gastric sleeve surgery and the pain is due to the hernia. It's been 61 days since my surgery. I have lost 48 lbs total so far. My clothes are BEGINNING to fit loosely. Some of them are even getting a little BIG. I FEEL BACK TO NORMAL. I catch myself thinking negative thoughts that this isn't going to work, because I DON'T hurt anymore. For THE most part, I have tolerated most everything I've tried very well... (with the exception of a salmon patty mishap I won't dare to repeat for at LEAST a year.) I'm just NOW starting to venture into more strenuous exercise. Up to this point, I've only been walking a few times a week... (well, besides what I do for work) I'm not complaining. I've been counting my blessings ever since I began t…

Hello All, I'm 4 days post op and what a journey! I had a band for 12 years which eroded and had to be urgently removed. My band did its job, but I gained lots of weight after removal. So, a revision to bypass was my option. I can tell you I was a complicated case due to adhesions and the discovery of 2 hernias. My poor wittle belly! I just wanted to add it will be great getting out of my fat suit and into my skinny suit again. All this pain is worth the long term result of being healthy! I love hearing others stories. It's a great way to support each other. Thank you. It's nice to know I'm not alone on this journey.

This surgery was the best decision I've ever made for myself ♡ Photo one was of me on our annual cruise last year around June (not even my highest weight). Other photo was about a month ago (3 1/2 months post op). We will be on our cruise again on the 28th & I look forward to not having to shy away from photos now. I feel better and am about 80 lbs down. The surgery is awesome if you work and respect it for what it is. Keep going guys ♡♡♡ Sent from my SM-N920P using BariatricPal mobile app

So here I go starting all over again. Lap Band installed 2005 - Starting weight 430 Port removed 6 weeks post install Lap Band eroded 2010 and removed - end weight 232 7 Years later I regained 88 lbs - been very steady at 320 for about 4 years, just can't do it anymore. Surgery Date 5/1/2017 - for the gastric sleeve. Nervous, excited, scared about going through everything I went through with the band. My journey with the band was a complete and utter failure and success all in one. I had my band installed in 2005. I knew something was wrong almost immediately, but the surgeon didn't believe me, he thought I was just making it up, the p…

My surgery is scheduled for Feb 11th with Dr. Fielding. He is great and I love him. However, because I didn't want to wait for the next date available at NYU, which would have been at the end of Feb, I agreed to have it done at Northern Westchester Hospital and so I am a little nervous about that because I have never heard of this hospital. Has anyone worked with him? Had it at that hospital? I'm so excited!!! Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated. FutureSkinnyGirl

Just when did this love affair with food begin? Well I wasn't overweight when I was growing up. After getting married at 17 and having 4 c-sections in the years to come I just never got back to my pre baby weight along with the stress of a failed marriage and the challenges of children, I turned to the love of my life .....food...glorious food. It comforted me at bad times, lonely times, bored times, as well as good times. Food was my center of any celebration as well. Any social event that I had or went to, food was always my plus one. It never turned me down or disappointed me. Fast forward 100 pounds later and 60 years old I needed a change. I suffer from p…

I finally took the step to get the gastric sleeve. I am 5 days post op and having a hard time drinking my protein shakes. I didn't expect so much pain. I have already lost 12lbs in 5 days. Is this too much? I have a cousin and uncle who had bypass over 15 yrs ago so it is hard to compare stories. I have struggled my whole life with weight and am disgusted with myself....but now feel regret. Any ideas to help me gain more strength to get through these first several weeks?

Hi Everyone, I am new to this, so forgive me! I got Gastric Bypass one week ago on 4/24 and I'm feeling to put it nicely (like sh*t)! Everything is a struggle for me. I move and I feel like I'm going to tear something or hurt myself. Eating (liquids) and drinking (more liquids) is so frustrating and I'm over it! I've also already ended up in the hospital for severe dehydration and that was a mess! I'm usually the happiest person and this surgery has literally taken every ounce of happiness out of me. I've been going through all of this alone besides the support of my amazing boss and friends. I think the most challenging thing is really though dealing with myself mentall…

So, I am 18 years old. I have been obese since the 7th grade. In 8th grade, I weighed 150 lbs, because I told myself that if I stayed at that weight until my adult years, that I wouldn't be too unhealthy. I don't know why I put that, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I have used this website for a lot of help in my process. I only have to do 2 more things; Psyc Eval and 1 more Nutritionist Appt. I have been doing this process through my senior year in high school, and I have managed to keep all of my grades B's and above. The reason that I am posting all of this is to ask, do any of you ever feel shamed about your surgery? I mean, everybody has their own …

To start off, I am only 20 years old, and my birthday is in July. I have been overweight my entire life, struggle with food addiction, depression, anxiety, basically all the fun stuff. All the women in my family have had weight loss surgery, and really only my mom has succeeded long term. I see all of them, and I get angry. I get angry because they are exactly like me and I don't understand why they couldn't help me before it was too late. My adult brain tells me that I know it's not their fault, as I am responsible for myself, but yet I'm angry. I think that I'm also angry because I am in slight denial. Even now, I don't believe I will have the surgery, even though it's…
