PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by UndercoverDiet,

I've seen so many people posting about not telling anyone about their surgery or being mad if someone finds out. I'm just curious why you don't want people to know? I've told basically everyone in my life. It's a huge deal to me. I'm excited about it and don't want to hide it. I'm not judging. Everyone is different, I'm just curious.

  3. So my insurance requires me to lose 5% of weight before they approve me for surgery. I started off at 258 and needed to be down to 243. When I started my nutritionist appt I had gained at was 264. I’m supposed to be down to 243 by end of January and I am still 258! I have completely changed up my lifestyle, going low carb, going to Zumba a few times a week and taking my thyroid meds. I am just so discouraged because I have been working so hard! I’ve thinned down but the scale won’t budge!! What have you guys done to help top the scales in your favor? Thanks so much

So I weight myself and have gained about 13lbs since my first doctors appointment on Sept 26. You guys I feel terrible. This week I started a week early on my preop diet to shed weight faster and get used to having liquids in the first few stages after surgery. Did this happen to any of you? I guess I kept telling myself “oh you’re not gonna be able to eat this again for awhile so just eat it now” and it stuck with me since. I feel so bad

  6. Started by Jenna1896,

I'm on day 6 of my pre-op diet. I've been sticking to it, only cheated once, but that's because I was about to pass out at work and ate half a PB&J. I am FREAKING OUT that my liver isn't going to be small enough. I get ATLEAST 90g of Protein a day, and ATLEAST 120 oz of liquid... Water, broth, Protein Shakes, and Jello is all I have except my 2 low carb meals a week I'm allowed to have, and so far that's been chicken and veggies, and the other a salad. But I still am so scared that my liver won't be small enough and I won't get the surgery on 12/18. I'm going for RNY.

Does anyone know why insurance (UMR) requires a 6 month supervised diet plan? I'm just curious.... What if I lose weight during that 6 months, will I run the risk of being denied by the insurance because I no longer have the required BMI? I have a long history of losing weight on diets, but only gain it all back (plus some). Sent from my SM-N920V using BariatricPal mobile app

  8. Insurance denied me after going through all the appts, meeting criteria and even after Drs supposedly verified benefits. I literally cried the whole day. I found some light at the end of the tunnel the following day. My friend told me about a Dr in same city who will do surgery if you have one of the two. 1) hiatal hernia or 2) need gallbladder removed. I have #1. Dr offers to do sleeve at same time as hiatal hernia repair, I just have to pay the $5k separately. Which i have opted to do. Supposedly my comorbidities are not severe even. Surgeon and insurance Dr had a peer to peer but nothing. I almost feel dupped by the surgeons office so they could bill my insurance …

It's day 7 and its been fine. I've done 5 days of full liquids and now I'm on the second day of clear liquids. I haven't even been that hungry and I haven't felt like I was going to die.....until this afternoon. I am so nauseous that I can't even hold Water down. What's up? Has that happened to anyone else? Does anyone have any suggestions or fixes?

I love my surgeon, but the office is so crazy busy I feel like I get blown off a lot. I have tests, never get the results (this is for my EKG, MRSA test *and* my Endoscopy... when I brought it up they said the nutritionist would go through the results with me at my next medically supervised weight loss appt). I get appointments with the wrong people, there are items on my online checklist in their system that they say I haven't completed that I have. Not life and death but um- surgery IS and if they can't manage my care now, how can they do it after surgery? Anyhow, there's an insurance issue (it's a good one actually, I can get approved sooner than expected) and th…

Hi all! I’m new to this forum and I’m so happy I’ve found it. I have had 2 appointments so far with my PCP for weight loss and next Friday 12/08 I meet for the first time with a nutritionist. I have 4 more scheduled weight loss appointments with my PCP and I wanted to know what else I need to do or what else I need to maintain. I have Medicaid as my insurance and I’ve been told it’s very hard to jump through all their hoops for the gastric sleeve surgery. So basically I’m just asking ahead to cover myself and do all that they will ask of me because my PCP doesn’t seem very knowledgeable to me although he’s done these types of appointments before he hasn’t had much experie…

Hi, I'm Veronica. I am 32, 5'7 and currently weigh 255 (BMI: 39.somthing). This is the heaviest I've ever been and at 32, I can actually feel it now; its a bit scary. I recently went through a break up and when I tried to get back on the horse and started hiking again, I noticed how sore all my joints were. I wake up and I'm sore. I worry this is going to get in the way of my weightloss process, WLS or other. I'm here because I'm considering WLS/VSG and have Kaiser and in insurance provider. I'v been perusing forums, Instagram, and YouTube vlogs for the last couple weeks and haven't really found much on the process for Kaiser. I realize everyone's plans are diff…

Hello! This is my first time posting to this site, so first off, hello! A little about me...I am 37 years old and a mother to one 3 year old and a 8 year old step son. I am a teacher, although I work at a virtual school so I am pretty sedentary during the day. Ten years ago I topped out at 269 pounds, with a height of 5 feet, 6 inches. I went to a bariatric weight loss seminar but never pursued it any further. A few months later I started jogging (I have been an athlete all of my life but the weight spiraled after I stopped playing college soccer). I wasn’t a fan of jogging when I was younger, but I fell in love with it. I dropped 80 pounds and kept it off for years. Thr…

  21. Hello, My name here is the same as my Instagram name in case anyone would like to follow my journey. I am PRE-OP and I stand at 5’6 and weigh 245 (242.1 from today’s weigh in..). I don’t really have a “goal” weight or size - I am just looking to be healthy. Hope I meet some amazing people here ? Good luck on your journeys!!

  22. Let me start by saying that I am 100% in favor of people having the right to keep their surgery private and to choose who to tell, or not to tell. Having said that, I have decided to tell family and co-workers that I am having the surgery. Because WLS is getting to be so common now, when others see someone having rapid weight loss, they usually speculate that surgery was involved - at least that's been my experience. I'd rather just be open about it than have people talk behind my back...but that's just me. For those who are keeping it a secret, or trying to, I was wondering if any of you have been busted lying about not having surgery? I've read a lot of the little …

Hey guys and gals! I need some help lol. I am having my gastric sleeve this coming Monday, December 4th. I am on the clear liquid diet right now. I realized I grabbed jello with sugar on accident. I thought I grabbed the sugar-free Jello. Oops. With that being said I've eaten it before I realized what it was. Is this a huge deal? I'm so nervous that I just messed all of this up.... does anyone know if the Jello I have is a problem? Should I send my husband out to get the right stuff? I suck at life sometimes lol.

So I am starting to get really nervous about this procedure. I am a prior WLS patient. Having a revision from the gastric band, but I had the band removed almost 3 years ago. I am so freaked out I am making poor food choices. I need some support!

  25. Anyone not lose much during pre-op diet? I’m one week into preop diet for lap land removal with conversion to RNY on Dec 11th. I lost 6 lbs the first 3 days then nothing else. I feel I should be losing more. I’m drinking 3 premier protein shakes a day with sugar free jello, chicken broth, and water. I really want to be successful and I’m nervous it won’t work for me.

Hi Everyone. I am brand new and looking at January or March for surgery, depending on insurance. I have scoured these forums and see a lot of talk about endoscopes before surgery. My list of requirements do not have a scope checked and I inquired with my coordinator yesterday who confirmed that my surgeon did not order one for me. Is this possible? Has anyone not had a scope beforehand? Thank you!

Have any of you had your surgeon tell you that you need to loose 8 pounds in one week? I’m confused I thought I had 2 weeks to loose that which seems realistic. I was informed by my surgeon today that I won’t be allowed to have surgery unless I lose four more pounds.

Good Morning everyone, I am new to this whole forum so please bear with me. My gastric sleeve surgery is scheduled for 12/13/2017. I am both nervous and excited. I made a decision to go through with the surgery before nerves or emotions could get the best of my decision making processes. I am glad that I made a firm decision at that time because otherwise the nerves may have gotten the best of me. Drink lots of water and take walks If you drink coffee like me, 3-4 cups a day you will need to back off before you start the liquid diet I had a headache for 3 days, day 1 was real bad but got better each day I dropped 2-4 pounds a day Biggest day was 4.5 That day I was most active and most hungry What got me through the first few days was thinking of eating again. 38. Hi all! I am self-pay and am scheduled to be sleeved soon by Dr.Wizman and wanted to hear other's experiences in regards to the hospital stay. 1. Which hospital did you have surgery at? Coral Springs or Aventura. 2. Private-room or shared? 3. Is there a specific Bariatric floor/wing of the hospital? 4. How long were you in the hospital for? A family member will be staying with me and is not wanting to stay at a near-by hotel as they are concerned with this being my first surgical procedure ever and I am trying to figure out the logistics of everything. Now my first visit went great he said I am a great candidate for surgery but before sending off my results to my surgeon he wants me to write a journal and bring it back for him to read it . I'm so confused because I honestly have nothing to write about. I need HELPP , Has anyone else done this before . If so what do you suggest me to write about . Thank you .

My surgeon told me he doesn't do that -- just be careful the few days before and don't go crazy or it will make you feel worse afterwards which I've been following (my surgery is next Thursday, 12/7). I've also met others that have not had the pre-op liquid diet in person so that makes me feel better...but I haven't met anyone who isn't doing some sort of elimination drink the day or night before surgery?
