I haven't even had the surgery and I feel like I'm failing already. I'm trying to eat healthy like my nutritionist said but it's not going so well... I'm constantly hungry. I have to lose 16lbs in 2 months to have my surgery, which isn't unreasonable at all... did anyone struggle before the surgery but was successful afterwards? Started by Guest,

I had my first appointment with my bariatric surgeon and he was great. He recommended the sleeve for me and gave me some interesting statistics about dieting in general. He mentioned that once your BMI hits 35, the chances of keeping weight off long term is slim to none without weight loss surgery. The problem is not losing it but keeping it off, and I can attest to that! I am sure most of us can. He also talked about how he and his wife have had their practice for 15 years but nearly lost it all during the lap band craze. Apparently the lap band was in Europe long before the US and all of the research coming out stated that the lap band was no good. For that reason, they…

Hi all, I’m new to this forum (and to the idea of having surgery to start with actually) so I’m at the beginner stage where I’m still doing my research. I thought that this would be an ideal place to start because that way I could get advice from people who have been through it. To get the basics out of the way, I’m 26 years old, female, living in the North East of England. Single and without children (and many friends due to being quite a hermit recently!). I’m 5”6 and 20 stone, that’s 127kg or 280lbs for those who aren’t from the UK. I would like to hear about other peoples experiences and stories and to just discuss the whole thing really. Since I like bullet poin…

Hi all, I went to my seminar, and sounds like I'm a good candidate for surgery. I'm meeting for the actual consult in a few weeks to discuss a specific plan. On the literature that was given at the seminar, it states that every pre-op patient goes through a "weight loss challenge." Anyone care to share what % of weight they had to lose? I'm hoping it's actually realistic given that I wouldn't be pursuing this surgery if weight loss was easy for me.

Hi everyone, im starting on the journey to have a gastric bypass I’m just wondering everyone that has had this, how long did it take after your recovery for your fitness levels to get better, I have no fitness level at all I can’t walk very far without getting really breathless, just trying to see a light at the end of the tunnel will I ever get there.

  13. Hello, I have the sleeve surgery scheduled in a couple days and plan on getting my hair done about a week after. My question is will I likely feel up to doing this? Can I sit in a the chair that reclines where they wash your hair in the bowl. I don’t want to have any issues with stitches or my sleeve by being in that position. I plan on asking my doctor just can’t until Monday. Thanks.

I'm trying to figure out the process I just received the authorization letter to see the surgeon. I have IEHP dual choice because I became disabled after a stroke. I am waiting to hear from the surgeons office before I call because my pcp office just faxed the authorization to the surgeon today. Does anyone else have IEHP know what would be next.

  15. I know this question gets asked all the time, but I'm asking it again, if that's OK! I have a first consult with a surgeon (Dr. Mayes at Virginia Hospital Center) scheduled for this week, and I'm wondering how long it took people to go from consult to surgery. My insurance company (Carefirst BCBS) requires a psych exam, two 3 month or one six-month structured diet (WW is fine), and a BMI of over 40. (I don't need a referral and my out-of-pocket is quite low.) I meet all these requirements, and according to BCBS, I do have the appropriate documentation. I know the surgeon will require a medical clearance and a meeting with the nutritionist as well, along with whatever othe…

I reached my A1C goal of being below 7%. The actual number is 6.7%. I wanted to have a safe margin when it comes time for surgery. They will not perform the surgery with blood sugars that are out of control and the threshold is 8%. Cause for celebration. If I can even push it a little bit lower by the time I am ready to go, so much the better. My endocrinologist was quite pleased but really wants me to be at 6.4% just to give my body the best chance to heal without complications. I can drop .3%. I got this!

Background: I'm having a DS 7 years post VSG. The VSG worked really well for a few years, but I slowing gained most of my weight back. I'm seeing the same surgeon for "part ll" which is the DS. She's very supportive. I had my second meeting with my surgeon and nutritionist today. The nutritionist essentially forbade everything but animal protein, non-starchy vegetables, 2 fruits per day max. Why this extreme diet prior to surgery? If we could lose weight on our own, read: eating the way mentioned above, we wouldn't need surgery!

I have been scheduled to have the operation on the 29th of this month and saw the sergeant today, he reassured me that it is really safe. On the other hand I have been talking to people and I have been getting mixed feelings, some told me that you will never ever be able drink alcohol, never never be able to drink (any drink) and eat at the same time, some said I am not big enough to have the surgery (by pass). I am 159 cm and 105 kg. I am really scared now and really wondering if I am never going to be enjoying the things I enjoyed before or am I going to become someone else. Has anyone else these kind of mixed emotions like this before the operation???

What is everyone’s surgeon saying on days off? My surgery date is January 24th so I need to put in for my days. I’ve only put in for 5 so far. But what is everyone’s doctors saying? Mine said a week but I’m wondering how realistic that is. I’m a teachers assistant at a preschool and I know for a fact I won’t be lifting or anything but I am just wondering. Thanks in advance!

Hi y'all. I would like to know if anyone else has, or have had, the same thoughts as I. I'm so confused, and I've been overthinking this hole surgery thing. I just want to talk it off and hear if there's anyone else. I'm soon to be sleeved, only waiting for a date now. And now suddenly I'm in doubt ('cause I'm scared). I've been thinking things like "will it really help me?", "can I really pull this off?", and "what if I just tried low-carb diet one last time..?". I'm so worried that I will fail to loose weight, and that I will missbehave when I'm sleeved. I have never been in doubt before, but now when it's so close... damn! I hate this. Is it normal to have doubt befor…

So today was my first visit to my Bariatric center. Overall it is a daunting but achievable road ahead. My insurance is requiring 3 months of a diet program with 4 classes a month during that time. A Nutritionist visit, a Psych visit and of course the surgeon visit. One thing that i like is that the center takes the stance that they are not going to pressure you to lose a certain amount during the diet, all of us are there because we have tried to diet and either it didn't work or the weight came back. So while they would like for us to lose weight the main goal is to not be gaining any weight and to put into practice what we learn in the classes, which unto itself should…

I'm 7.5lbs down on my pre-op diet - hoping to get to a stone before my surgery this time next week. Excited, nervous, happy and dreading 4 weeks of pureed foods. Still believe I've made a good decision for my health though.

  41. I’m in the assessment stage and originally was thinking of the sleeve, but after talking with the dietician and nurse, I’m wondering if this is the right choice. I had lapband surgery in 2007 and was very successful with it, losing about 125 lbs. I kept it off for several years, but over time it malfunctioned and slipped, so I had to have it defilled. Then I gained most of it back. Now I want revision surgery and the WLS center thinks I’m a candidate for either — my choice. What led you to choose one or the other? Any pros or cons? Any advice would be great.

I am interested in the gastric sleeve for weight loss surgery. I have been admitted numerous times for blood clots to the point that I am on blood clot medicine for life. I have also been hospitalized due to IVC filter inserted and removed My question is would it be a good decision to have weight loss surgery under these conditions

  46. Surgery cancelled by my surgeon because I wasn't in the right mindset. He scheduled me to see him in two weeks. I already had the IV in to. I told him how I've been feeling and he said ,"Well surgery don't sound like a good idea at this time". I agree with him. It's been a battle to meet all the requirements & do the postop diet but I've been battling with my own inner demons. The last couple days have been torturous on my mind. You can't go into surgery with the wrong mindset or you'll come out the wrong mindset. I guess the best device I can give is if you're scheduled for surgery and you're having doubts speak up before it's too late. I was 353 when I had my fir…

Hello! I am starting the process with gastric sleeve on Wednesday, but my insurance requires 3 months of supervised dieting, so I am looking at March or April for surgery (providing there are no hiccups). I teach at home for a virtual high school, so I am wondering how long I will need to be off of work. Ideally, I would love to have the surgery later in the week and go back to work on Monday. I teach Seniors and I am the only one in my school that is certified to teach the courses that I teach (AP). I love my kiddos too, it will be good for me to get back to working with them.
