  2. Hello all! I'm brand new to this forum and I'm hoping to get some insights from you all on timing. My first appointment is on Friday (2/2) and I am so excited. I went through this process once before and had my first appointment with surgeon/dietician/nurse and then later was told my insurance wouldn't cover it. I've changed jobs and reached out to my insurance (health partners) ahead of time and made sure it's covered and figured out which doctors are in-network. I am a teacher which means that summer is the only viable time to do the surgery. I'm wondering whether I should be pinning my hopes on being able to snag a surgery date in mid- to late July (hubby and I h…

I feel calm and ready, despite some nerves. I am ready for the postop pain and changes. I am just afraid of not making it through surgery or having a complication after. All of the normal stuff I guess. I am holding onto my "Why" like nothing else right now. I will never forget the first time I heard about this surgery, I was probably like 10. I was watching the story they did about Al Roker on NBC. I remember watching him as he lost weight and being so excited for him. I wish I hadn't gotten to this point but I am looking forward to getting my life back and being the person I always knew I could be. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

After talking about WLS surgery with my husband and getting his full support, I finally had my first visit with my pcp this week and scheduled the consult with the surgeon next month. He knows I need to star losing weight, and yes I do have 6 whole months to do it in. But today he came home the store with a package of chocolate chip cookies, carton of ice cream, and two bags of chips! I don’t have a specific plan in mind to lose my BCBS required 5%. I’ve started with eliminating soda and packing lean cuisines and fruit for lunch instead of heading to the cafeteria for chicken strips, cheeseburgers and fries and the like. Looking for diet advice during those months…

After 4 quick months surgery is scheduled for 2/8/18 at NYU. I’m still uncertain if I’m approved bc all my surgical coordinator said was “you’re good to go” [emoji848][emoji31] lol But anywho! On day 3 of the liquid diet. Any other February peeps?

  7. Started by tuckersmom,

So I’ve met with my surgeon in December. He was great and agreed the surgery is a good fit for me. His nutritionist not so nice. Nasty bi*%h. Anyway I’ve had no direction. I was sent on my way with a list of foods I should incorporate into my diet. I have to follow a doctor-supervised diet for three months per my insurance. No idea how much I have to lose or even if I have to lose. I guess I didn’t ask enough questions during my visit.

Hi, everyone! I’m on my 6th day of this liquid pre-op diet that consists of 4 Protein Shakes a day. I know some people have diets where they can have solids, but it doesn’t state that on mine. I’m having issues with the Protein shakes. I’ve picked up several kinds and I’m having a hard time getting them down at this point and I almost rather not consume anything. I definitely need the protein though, so I’m trying to push through and not starve myself. Did anyone have a similar experience?

I didn’t know it would be so hard to do this diet. I also didn’t know I was this addicted to food. I started a small diet before this but I was still able to eat food. I glad that there are groups like this and group meeting that are there to help. And the fact that I do have a good support system at home

  10. Finally!!!! I’m excited and nervous... not new to surgeries as I’m in late 50’s but now my new chapter! Been working towards this day since last July, paid the first 4 months out of pocket as I had an insurance at that time that I would no way have the surgery with (Kaiser) and feel extremely confident in the dr I do have.. his bariatric team is awesome! They now feel like family at this point. Hard part is I don’t have any family near me (I live in Hawai‘i) so a bit sad in that.... but the team is awesome and I know I can contact them anytime. It would be great to have a surgery buddy here.... I’m having the bypass... ? ??

So I had a dream last night that my surgeon called to tell me my surgery was approved (cuz I guess he's Es McMahon in my dreams and gives people good news himself), but that insurance denies my husband's surgery. And I was like "yeah, but I was approved? When's surgery?". Lol I didn't even care that my husband was denied! If I wasn't in school for counseling, I would probably interpret that dream in a way that ended with me being a selfish wife. Lol

People keep asking me what my “goal” weight is. And I have no idea what to say. I’ve been well over 350 pounds most of my adult life...so I have no idea what I’ll look like at 200, or even 250! My goal is to feel better in my body, to be able to ride a bike or go for a walk or ride a dang rollercoaster with my daughter!! But secretly, I hope to make it to “One-derland”. Even if it’s 199! Lol

Hi everyone , first time posting here. My question is that on my paperwork for my insurance it states that I must have participated in a weight loss program for 6 months (either physician or non physician supervised) within the last 4 years prior to requesting Bariatric surgery. Does anyone have experience with this? Does weight watchers or the challenges I’ve participated in at my gym last year count? I still need to confirm with my surgeon but wanted some insight from fellow patients. Thanks!!

Hey friends- I've been through 5 visits with my dietician and have my last one scheduled for February 20th (lost 30 pds. so far). I've already completed my psych evaluation and sleep apnea evaluation. What happens when I'm finished with my last visit? Do they submit it to insurance? Do I see the surgeon for a pre-op appointment? I'm a planner with anxiety, so having a timeline is very helpful for me. Help!!! Sent from my SM-G955U using BariatricPal mobile app

  21. The long awaited day is finally here. So many thoughts running through my head. Thinking of a positive future where I am healthy and active. Also fearing that I will leave my 5 year old and 2 year old motherless. Aside from my husband and kids, I have told no one else about my surgery. Hopefully a year from today I will be posting about how successful the year was and how my life has changed for the better. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm set to get my gastric sleeve surgery in March, 2018! I am soooooooo HANGRY! That's so hungry that you are angry about it! Yesterday was my 1st low carb/high protein day and I consumed less than 30 carbs and ate less than 690 calories. I also worked out for 45 minutes...today I have had to increase my carb load because I cannot go from 120 carbs down to less than 30 without feeling like crap! Today I got 50.5 carbs but, I'm in a terrible mood!!! This is not like me! Help! Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated!

I started my first appt in August for wls. Did all the visits with dietician, psych, doctors and final the surgeon. Got a surgery date of Feb 2!! Then the surgery request went to my ins co. This is a new provider since Jan 1. (Knowing my ins co was changing, I checked with my new insurance co. Bariatric surg is covered and my doc was in network!) Well turn out my new insurance, CareFirst BCBS, requires 6 months, or two 3 months consecutively, of a diet plan before they’ll approve me. Are they really going to hold me to that since I started this process 6 months ago!? Omg. I’m so upset !!

  30. I went to the seminar and have my first appointment scheduled to develop a plan of care and such. My insurance does not require any weight loss prior to surgery. I'm already hovering at about a 38 BMI and will qualify due to multiple comorbidities. The surgeon I'm seeing has a "weight loss challenge" of 10 % excess weight. I'm certainly not averse to that as I think it would be great to start modifying my habits prior to surgery to make it a lifestyle change. However, I lose too much and I don't qualify anymore. It's not that I don't know how to lose weight... I've been on a weight loss roller coaster with the same 80-100 lbs for almost 2 decades. This seems to be specifi…

Hello, I'm new to all of this. I went and had my first consult and meeting with the surgeon Jan. 28th, 2018. She asked me to lose 10% of my body weight. My weight at my doctors appt was 221.8. and my next appt with my surgeon and PCP(for medical clearance) is Feb 2nd. After following my doctors instructions and sticking to a low carb, high protein diet, today I stepped on the scale and weigh 203.5. If I lose more than 10 percent, will they cancel my surgery?

  33. Probably been asked an answered, but who did you tell? I have elected NOT to tell my immediate family members. All are obese or morbidly obese, yet NONE have moved forward with surgery. My aunt is the ideal candidate, yet her children blasted her for even thinking about it. She has now had two knee replacement surgeries and will likely be dead before she reaches 70 from obesity-related ailments. My sister just got diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and put on metformin, has sleep apnea, arthritis, GERD, and a host of other obesity-related issues. Yet, when I asked her if she had ever explored WLS, she was appalled by the idea and stated she didn't want "loose skin" and that p…

  37. Hi, I just wanted to share how I’m feeling incredibly sad, tearing up almost every night before my VGS scheduled on 1/31. I feel it’s the right choice yet there’s so much pain, sorrow and grief coming up to the surface. That so much of my emotions have been suppressed and really swallowed in (quite literally) with my own emotional eating. It’s almost this wake up call to face what’s there. My heart hurts. I feel so sad to what I’ve reached yet I am not shaming my body or self for all that it has been through. I just wanted to share and see if this resonates with anyone else..

  40. Help! So, my original date was 2/24. I received mail yesterday (pre-determination) stating denial due to insufficient documentation for co morbidity. Talked with my surgeons office this morning, it could be a coding issue combined with not sending in my BP treatment plan. The surgeon is interested in bumping up my surgery due to an cancellation to 2/5. I'm scheduled to go in for my Pre-Op class tomorrow now. Has anyone experienced denial and a fast turn around when supporting documentation is sent back in. The variables have me on a roller coaster ride of emotions!
