PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

I am going in for my pre-op next Monday, and I'm getting excited, and nervous! I have been working on this journey since last April. My biggest concern is my young family. I have 7 children at home: 3 teens, and a 7, 6, 4, and 1 year old. The teenagers are fabulous and help out great! However the 4 year old has to be driven to/from school,(will I be able to?) and I need helpful ideas on the 1 year and getting her in/out of her crib. She is only 15 months old, and won't stay in a toddler bed! Initially we had scheduled surgery to coincide with the kids February vacation, my husband has that week off as a teacher. However the surgeon was on vacation, so it has to be the …

My package was submitted to my insurance last week. A hospital authorization popped up on my insurance record dated 1/18. Not sure what that means, but I'm just patiently waiting for my insurance decision, whether an approval or denial. I'm the most impatient person so the wait is killing me. I figure, if approved, I'll probably be scheduled for mid to late March. I really can't believe how quickly the last 6 months have gone, but these last few weeks are dragging by. My final appointment was last Monday but seems like last year. This site is a great source of information. I can't tell you how much of a help it has been through this journey. [emoji3]

I am scheduled tomorrow 2/7/18 and can’t be happier. I am hopeful everything will be fine. I am curious to know why other people decided to have WLS? For me, I hate diabetes , I miss running that feeling you get when the wind hits your face pure freedom(not that I can’t run now but damn it is hard-does not feel like freedom lol), I want to be the best possible role model for my child/family in all aspects, and to live longer to enjoy life. I am beautiful now so it is not to feel beautiful or be prettier. I already love myself, but life happens and being Hispanic- I love food! I am scared, excited, and all emotions I can’t think of. I am just curious to know what m…

Sorry, I know it's the same old liquid diet post that everyone puts out there, but I just need to vent. Today is the first day of my liquid diet. I'm not necessarily feeling hungry but I am already so frustrated with the food options that I am feeling extremely depressed and reckless. I really hit a stride starting in December when I began eating a plant-based diet and it's so upsetting to go from a healthy, delicious diet I was REALLY enjoying to artificial tasting protein shakes and bars. They don't taste BAD - they're not gross. But they're not delicious. The fruits, beans, hummus, nuts, veggies I was eating were delicious. And they were healthy. I lost 15 pounds …

I recently met a nutritionist as part of my surgical pathway. I’ve made a lot of good changes in the last few months and have managed to lose 14lbs...the hardest part for me losing more than that and keeping it off. What changes did you make after meeting with the nutritionist? What are your go to meals before surgery? Scrambled eggs and geese or apples and peanut butter are my go to breakfast. Chicken Caesar salad for lunch and usually something like chicken with rice and broccoli for dinner. im slowly getting tired of chicken.

Hi all. I just started researching bariatric surgery options and I was hoping to hear what your process has been from deciding to have surgery, pre-requisites to having surgery, why you chose your type of surgery, how long the pre-surgery process is... Any and all information is appreciated.

Today I went to my final Pre Op appointment (my surgery is 2/19). I gained weight. The doctor said I had to go on my liquid diet NOW and loose weight. He also wants to see me again (on 2/9) for a weigh in. My surgery depends on this... so a month liquid diet here I come. He was also nasty about it. Yeah I did wrong. Don't need to be hit over the head with it.

  17. I started a supervised diet for insurance requirements about three and a half weeks ago. In those three months, my surgeon is requiring that I lose 12 pounds. A few days ago, I found out that they will try and submit an appointment that I had with my PCP a month prior, as one of the required months for my diet. If my insurance allows it, that means that I actually have to lose 12 pounds in 2 months instead of 3. I got on the scale this morning and weighed in at 233, with a starting weight of 241, so I am down 8 pounds. It is so hard though! I have another weight check in on Wednesday. I figure since my appointment is later in the day, I will weigh in around 236, but hop…

  21. I am almost pain free after surgery. I am hardly ever hungry. It is easy to follow my liquid diet although I am a bit board with it. I have lost about 13lbs. I don't have much energy, I sleep a lot. Constipation and bloating hit pretty bad around day 7. I fixed that with a variety of methods. Overall I am doing well. I decided it was a good time to finally get some much needed braces seeing as I will be on a liquid/soft food diet for some time. A lot of changes for me in a short time. I am excited for the future and focusing on that as I struggle with all of these changes in my life. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Lost story short, My mom is not being supportive of me having surgery. Honestly, it kind of sucks. My husband, sister, sister in law, brother in law, and best friend all are. I've only told them... but my mother is telling me I can lose the weight on my own. She knows how much I suffered with my weight all of my life... But she doesn't understand that PCOS, Endometriosis, Hypothyroid and Hypertension all cause water weight/weight gain (idk if she just doesn't believe it?)... Do/Did you have a family member or friend who wasn't supportive?

  25. Greetings! I will have my consultation next week. Just curious as to what insurance I need. I read PPOs are best because you only pay a small fraction and you get approved super fast, is this so. Also how many phases do you need to go thru after you are willing to move forward with procedure? I seen a few threads here and there about classes, appts, diets you need. Anyone have any insights. Thanks from mj24 in sunny California.

  33. Finally!!!! I’m excited and nervous... not new to surgeries as I’m in late 50’s but now my new chapter! Been working towards this day since last July, paid the first 4 months out of pocket as I had an insurance at that time that I would no way have the surgery with (Kaiser) and feel extremely confident in the dr I do have.. his bariatric team is awesome! They now feel like family at this point. Hard part is I don’t have any family near me (I live in Hawai‘i) so a bit sad in that.... but the team is awesome and I know I can contact them anytime. It would be great to have a surgery buddy here.... I’m having the bypass... ? ??

I'm about 3 months into my 6/7 months of preop wait for my insurance and I've been doing all the things to get ready for this surgery. I keep reading the books, finding people to follow online, exercising, trying to watch what I eat, but for the life of me I feel like I'm already failing. I was on Saxenda and was doing great, but my insurance decided I didn't need it and now I'm worried I won't lose weight before surgery. I don't have an amount I have to lose and the dr office says I'm doing great, but I keep putting so much pressure on myself. Almost as if I should be losing a ton of weight alone, however, if I could, I wouldn't need wls. Right. Haha. Sorry I just…

I am so worried that if I don’t lose the weight they will cancel my surgery. Any one ever had surgery cancelled? This is a little off topic. But can I please ask the purpose of the forum? There appears to be a lot of nasty people on it. I thought the purpose was to help other members. Am I wrong? I see people attacking others who come here to look for help. I have enough problems getting ready for this surgery. I have been made fun of because of my weight my entire life. It is disgusting to see it happen on a Bariatric Forum where people are supposed to help each other. I am on many Bariatric forums on FB. None attack members like I see on this forum.

This is more of a rant than a question but I'm feeling so frustrated with getting my surgery date. I found out I was approved on 12/27 but I needed to get a test done to check for a certain type of bacteria. I waited and waited for them to call and schedule it but they never did so I finally got ahold of the right department and had the test today. I called the bariatric office today to see what the timeline would look like once the surgeon receives the results and, unfortunately, spoke to my least favorite coordinator, who is very rude. He basically gave a non-answer and said that once the surgeon gets the results they will "eventually" call me. I wouldn't be so wor…
