Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by Sammi_Katt,

So, part of the thing I love the best about having lost so much weight and having so much energy is what all I can physically do. Back in September (since I live in Nevada), I went opal mining, and yesterday, I went to Tonopah to go do turquoise mining. We dug, broke rocks, and did basically hard labor for 5 and a half hours. Over that time, my garmin recorded me having burned over 1000 calories, and despite my soreness today, I had a blast. Does anyone else do mining stuff? Does anyone know of any good places? I went opal mining in Virgin Valley in Nevada, and turquoise in Tonopah, Nevada.

Today I played my first (American) tackle football game (Stockholm Mean Machines) I am SUCH a rookie! I only got my pads 3 weeks ago and had to borrow all of them from the team and other players... BUT boy was it fun. I (now) play Offensive Right Guard and was deathly scared before the match but it turned out that our own team during practice hits much harder than our opponent. At 48 years old and about 16 months post GPB, I am soooo happy to have done this. I still have problems seeing myself at my weight though and think i'm still "fat" in my head even though everyone else sees me as somewhat of a bean poll (Im 5 foot 11). I also could only play this one game this seaso…

  4. WHEN did you start REALLY WORKING OUT? I'm 2 months post-op from the sleeve and mostly happy with my weight loss. I've been walking, doing a little yoga, stretching, and a little light weight training at home with a 5/10/15 kettlebell set my brother gave me for my August birthday. However, now I really want to tone up more. I'm thinking of braving my local Recreation Centers that have great weight/circuit training/cardio equipment in January or February 2021 when I'm 3 months or 4 months out. Of course, my plans will be dependent on the ever-growing COVID-19 numbers drastically decreasing. (Man, Listen---I'm not happy at all that I paid my yearly due…

  6. A bit about me: I had the sleeve surgery in December 2017 period. I've lost a total of 181 pounds since last May, and now I'm looking to gain some muscle mass. I'm currently sitting at 225lbs pounds and 6'2.5" tall. So many unanswered questions of not been able to find good responses to. Things such as how to start eating any calorie surplus now that I want to add muscle. Will I be able to eat enough to add muscle? Follow me on this thread and I will track my journey for any others that may follow the same path. Starting status: 8/17/18 - 225lbs

So its been a little over a year since my surgery and I've went without exercising (I'm not counting my walks). I absolutely hate the gym. I'm super self conscious and think everyone is staring at me when I know people are too busy to care. I'm hoping one day my mentality will change but until then I'm looking to workout at home. I haven't felt this good in years and I finally have the motivation to exercise. I never thought I'd be saying this but I have such a strong drive to sweat my a** off and lose the rest of this weight. Anyways, I'm looking for a good workout subscription, any recommendations? I was doing some research and it seems like Beach Body and Daily B…

I haven't been on a bike since I was a teenager (I'm 48 now). My husband just told me on our way home from dinner tonight that he wants to get himself a bike so he can take it with us camping and summer vacations. Got me thinking that I MIGHT want to get one for myself. 1- Is it true what they say about never forgetting how to ride a bike? lol 2- I'm almost 4 yrs out from VSG. I originally lost 100lbs and have gained back about 30. I never did get down to my goal weight and still have over 100lbs to lose. 3- For those that are still considerably overweight, do you own a bike? Do they make bikes for heavier people? Any suggestions on whic…

I was sleeved 11/15/19, so I'll be 7 months post-op soon.. ive had a longer recovery road than normal but recently felt I may be time to get into fitness...I tried CrossFit and my body definitely let me know "hey this is too much"...I almost feel like I failed simply because I wasn't able to push myself but had to listen to my body. Also wasn't aware of how intense CrossFit was. Anyways, any pointers of how to begin exercise without injuring myself? I know I'll need to ease into it for sure..

  14. I’m about 4 weeks post op from my bypass surgery. Down a total of 47lbs since pre-op diet and feeling great. My doc said I could start swinging a club at 4-6 weeks so I’m itching to start. Did anyone have any challenges to be aware of? I’m healing and feeling well but cautiously optimistic on adding golf. Love to hear any feedback. Thanks!

What exercise equipment impulse buy have you bought in the past that lay under the bed or in the cupboard never seeing the light of day, but now due to quarantining or self isolating has become a lot more useful to you? I had bought a gorilla bow resistance band system, it was very much an impulse buy. Sat under the bed for months, earlier this year I tried to sell it on gumtree received not one enquiry. Now a little over a month out from my surgery and with gyms being closed, it and I have been having little workouts to complement my walking. Hi, I need help! I had the sleeve in March of 2015. About a year ago I started gaining weight back. I've gained about 25 lbs back. I recently got a personal trainer and have been working out consistently for 2 months. The problem is the scale hasn't moved. My trainer focuses on strength training. So 4 of the 5 days we workout we are lifting and 1 day is cardio for about 30 minutes. He wants me to eat more because of this but physically I can't ( you guys can relate). He wants me to eat more than 1200 calories a day but I'm only getting in about 600. Maybe 700 or 800 on a good day. I just need advice. I don't know if I should cut back on the strength training o…

I had my DS on 18 Sept; for the past month or so I have been having a weird issue where in different spots in my back, or my bi/triceps I get a pain, where it feels as though there is a needle jabbed into the muscle. And these will persist for days. Has anyone else experienced this kind of thing?

I have check in with my WLS team and they say its normal. But is it frustrating. I am walking about 20 -30 minutes a day. I started back to work via tele work and really want to lose my stomach inches. Any suggestions? I am drinking water, eating lots of protein- eggs, chicken, oatmeal and veggies. Thank you for any suggestions. Erin

I wanted to find a pilates thread but they were all old. I did Pilates for the first time as recommended by my doctor for my back. For the first five minutes, I was like, this is so easy! How am I going to get a workout doing this? After the class, I was so out of it I got lost driving home. I was a mile from my house. So... for those who do pilates, how often do you go? Do you think it has contributed to weight loss? My back feels nice and stretched out now. We'll see if I can walk tomorrow.

I rode 40+ miles on my bike today. I did great with my water and my RX bars, but I was hungry afterward, no suprise. My car tire got a flat and I had to wait over 2 hours at Discount Tire to get it fixed. Anyway, I walked to Chik Filet and got a healthy lunch. Great. Got my car back and THEN drove through McDonalds and got a LARGE fry!!!! I ate it all, wishing there was more salt. (Clue.) And now I am sick. My tum really hurts and feel like throwing up. Remorse, remorse, remorse. Looking back, it wasn't hunger - it was salt. So lesson learned - I need to use some electrolytes on longer rides. But oh how it makes me sad to see how easily I just drove through and got those…

OMG, who knew it would be so hard to get back into a routine doing Pilates? I belong to a HOA and they offer Pilates and Yoga at our Clubhouse/Fitness Center. They WERE offering them 3 evenings a week plus Saturday mornings. But with my daughter's activity schedule, getting there was a challenge. Finally forced myself to start going only to find one afternoon they were cancelled. Another afternoon the classes were being taught by my new employee (AWKWARD!). The 3rd day the class was great... but again getting there was a problem. I kept trying to do it at home, but there was no space, or my daughter would "critique me", or my husband would make unsolicited comments. Wasn'…

I am trying to find out what the target should be. I do personal group training 4-5 days a week which is a combo of core, cardio, and strength training. I was told before to try and stay under 65 grams of carbs and only 1000-1200 calories a day. This seems low with the high intensity of the workouts. Thank you in advance for any input.

I recently completed my first half-marathon utilizing 2 bananas and about a liter of water to power me through. I know thats not going to work for the marathon and I am here asking for suggestions on fueling during the race. Thanks in advance.

I am 4 months out of surgery. I am at a 3 week stand still. Back and forth from 1 lb. up and then 1 lb. down. This has been going on for 3 weeks as I said. The problem is I am unable to walk anywhere except the house. I do make it to doctor appointments but the every day exercise is lacking. I have an eliptical machine I'm afraid to get on because I have unsupportive knees and a fused hip. SO.......what to do? I have to exercise. Yes I can walk around the house with my walker but it's not doing the trick. Any suggestions will be very helpful. Thanks for reading this.

  39. I came across these exercise videos (provided by the UK NHS - National Health Service, nil charge), there is a good range of cardio, resistance, yoga, pilates, even a belly dance video. Some of the pilates and yoga videos are geared towards those with specific health issues eg arthritis. A lot are for beginners, and it doesn't look like much, if any, equipment is needed. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/nhs-fitness-studio/

I'm six months post-surgery and have been doing resistance training using my gym's weight machines for several months. However, I haven't made any progress -- I've been stuck at the same reps and weight resistance on all the machines for months. I've tried to up the weights by small amounts but haven't been strong enough to utilize them. I fatigue at the same number of reps, too. Yesterday my nutritionist advised me to increase my carbs because I'm on a very low car diet. She said I need to do this so my muscles can get stronger. This terrifies me because I don't want to stall or, worse, gain back weight. I'm older (60) so maybe that is part of the cause. …

  43. I had a body composition at the nutritionist a few months ago. It seemed accurate based on the findings. I have since lost some weight from 134.4 to 125.5 lbs. but I do NOT feel like I have bulked up muscle, just thinner overall. I am still doing the same basic exercises machines, I haven't even really went up on the resistance or reps. I only make it to the gym maybe once a week. I don't do free weights or heavy weight lifting etc. Today I used a body composition scale at the local gym and it has my body fat at 15.5%. 3 months ago and 9 pounds heavier I had a body fat of 25% at the nutritionist office. It is 2 different machines so that's why I am questioning the a…

I'm looking to start weight lifting to build muscle and cut down on skin sagginess. No idea where to start though. I'd like to work the following muscle groups, likely 2-3x weekly? Biceps, Triceps, Rhomboids, Abs, Pecs, Thighs and Calves. I have small weights (think 1-2 pounds) and a bungee type system but I'd be willing to invest in joining a gym or some free weights, I just don't know what kind of plan to follow to do this right. I currently walk 2+ miles about 3-4 times a week and do barre 2x a week.

Id like to buy a smart scale because I’ve heard they’re more calibrated and work well with smart phones. Any recommendations? I have an iPhone and an Apple Watch that i would like to link it to.
