Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Hi, I just joined the YMCA where there's a pool. I'm super morbidly obese, have 2 knee replacements, chronic back pain and feet so bad I can only walk very short distances. I'm going to use the pool for exercise (with Hubby!?) and other than water walking I don't know what to do. Very weak muscles and horrible range of motion in knees. We're not utilizing the Silver Sneakers/classes so soon, but will when we feel more limber. Any help out there? Thank You!

Hi guys so I'm 1year and 1 month post op I've been at the gym for 4 months now but feel like utter s**t I can't get enough food in before the day is up after the gym cos I'm rushing around and forget I do however take pre workout is this why my body could be playing games with me I have a huge lump on my back docs thinks it's a boil and my lower back is killing me but also eating food makes me feel more like s**t does anyone know if preworkout is actually no good for my gut? Should u just take protein? This is probably the most stupidest question I'm sorry i get all flustered with my health (I suffer mentality issues as well as neurologic activity problems) n I get confus…

  3. I am in desperate need of a non-stim energy booster for pre-workout. I am persistently tired (I've been this way my whole life, nothing new).... and going to the gym is a waking nightmare (although I suck it up and do it). Looking for some supplements or non-stim weight loss/metabolism boosters + energy boosters to take pre-workout. I can't take any stimulants because I have bad anxiety and even a cup of tea makes me feel like I am having a panic attack, lol. I am really overwhelmed by all of the options on Amazon. I currently take the following vitamins/supplements: Thyronine (T2), chia seed extract, vitamin e, calcium, keratin, vitamin d, super b complex, iron, ba…

  4. Just got the ok to work out from my surgeon today. I am still having pain from surgery. I am only 10 days out of surgery. What are some good exercise to start with?

  5. Started by Neoteric Verve,

I was told today (well Tuesday afternoon) that I could have my surgery in September sometime. Not sure when but the office said they couldn't imagine me NOT getting the approval. So I figure on mid to late September. I want to get back to martial arts as soon as I can. I practice Krav Maga, an Israeli combat martial arts system. Given the high violent nature of the art, is it reasonable to resume practice in 4-6 weeks? Is that a reasonable time-frame? Also, on a side note, I have been told two different things about weight loss exercising. For WEIGHT loss, high intensity workouts in short duration burn a lot more calories but the percentage of fat loss is lower (app…

So i live in a major city where everyone on planet earth is a skinny bitch and fitness freak lol. I’m slowly turning into that kind of annoying person too haha. So because of that, there’s every possible fitness class, fad gym, regular gym, fancy over priced boutique class available to me and they’re expensive as hell. So i’m trying to narrow it down. Has anyone actually tried orange theory? Is it fun? Is it mostly weights, or cardio? Is it worth the price? Are the classes super long? And be honest, would you a actually stick with it or do you suggest something else? T.I.A

hi everybody just one question, has anyone ever lost weight with the band with little execerise, i have arthritis in both knees, and ankles, just went back to work on the 20th. and im in alot of pain. doc took away my arthritis meds, (my lapband surgeon said i could have them if they were small enough) but my doc said no. so ive been taking tylenol and lortabs for the pain and sometimes that doesnt help. im miserable just walking around . thats the reason for the band to lose the weight so i can walk without so much pain. so has anyone lost with not much exercise. thanks tammy

OK, this might sound weird, but one of my biggest fears about the Lap-band® is how it will affect my doing Pilates. I have been taking classes 2 sometimes 3 times per week for 2 years. It is the only exersize I've ever done that I truly love, and I am terrified that I will have pain at the port site that will prevent me from doing this exersize (long term - I realize there would be recovery). Do any of you guys with bands do Pilates? Will I still be able to curl up and work those abs? I'd like to actually see them one day...

Hey, fitness buffs! I need some advice for holding onto my phone during my workouts. Cardio & weight training. I HAVE TO listen to music constantly so I download all my playlists to my phone. All that to say, I'm not looking for music player technology recommendations, just a way to hang onto my phone. I've tried wearing it in my bra [yuck] and tucking it into my weight belt in front [connection issues] Arm bands don't appeal to me because A. Batwings and B. Friction during arm movements. Any good ideas out there? I have wireless headphones so location on my body isn't too much of an issue.

  12. Started by notmyname,

So, I was cleared to go back to exercising and I had my first post-surgery session with my personal trainer. We decided to start easy and not do abs just yet. So we did ALL arms. I may not be able to write tomorrow at work. Hurts so good Looking forward to Pilates on Sunday.

It is like a Fitbit or Jawbone, except it is a watch too and you don't have to charge it or take it off to shower, swim etc.

This might have been asked before but I am struggling to lose 35lbs of baby weight! Trying to find the right foods and ways of eating that will work with gastric bypass. Question? What am I missing? Tonight i went back to dance class (ballroom) for the first time since surgery. I made sure to get all water and protein in.. I even took my dinner with me and ate it at the studio about half hour before class. I had fun, a good time, but i did get tired a bit.. but more importantly while on the way to the car, while talking to another student.. I was starting to feel nauseous. Any ideas suggestions?

I found out about this app on another forum, it's called sworkit. I use the free version. You can do a custom workout of yoga, stretching, cardio or strength training. It requires no equipment, and you can set your time. Tried it today for the first time, cardio kicked my butt, but the beginner workout wasn't bad,but was hard!! I'm aiming for 10 minutes twice a day to start. Tried it with my 11 year old, he loved it!

On the 5th I had my gallbladder out and a hernia repaired. My surgeon said I can start lifting (light) and doing some core exercises this week or next. I am still sore on my right side where my incisions are so I am waiting another week to be safe. However, my coworker has had multiple hernia repairs and she said that that area will always be weak and at risk for herniating again. My surgeon didn't tell me this, but sometimes they don't think of some things. Is it safe to do weight lifting and core exercises when you've had hernias? I love circuit/strength training and especially core work (since it's my strongest area, lol) and I will be crushed if I can't do that …

But I never made my initial goal so I have about 25 lbs to go before I'm there. That same doctor who gave me some ugly health news has ORDERED me to start an exercise regimen. I have a cushy membership to my local Y, which is PLUSH. seriously, very very nice, clean and a huge facility. Bottom line? I'm absolutely scared to death to go. 26. Started by notmyname,

well, i joined a stepbet. You bet on yourself (games are $20-40) and they draw your steps from your fitness tracker and create a daily goal for you to meet 4 days, then a higher "stretch" goal for 2 days. Its based on where you are, so someone who runs every day currently will have a higher goal than someone who is currently sedentary. If you meet the goals for the duration of the game (2-4 weeks), then you split the pot at the end. If you don't make your goal any given week, you lose your money. So, I guess it works - to get my stretch goal for today, I stayed on the treadmill an extra 15 minutes. So, I guess its doing its job. Just need to keep it up for anot…

I have a pretty decent home gym and I have bought a few workout DVDs. I have tried Plus Size Cardio Kick, which is 33 minutes of nonstop cardio. I don't really like it because I find the footwork to be very confusing, and 33 minutes a bit too much for someone JUST restarting exercise after 5 years. I have Jillian Michaels Beginner 30 Day Shred and I LOVE IT. I LOVE circuit training. I feel like I get the most out of the exercise... cardio and strength... and I am not killing myself with 30+ minutes of straight cardio. I also have Total Stretch by Jessica Smith; I haven't tried that yet. Anyone have any recommendations for good circuit training DVDs? Especially ones f…

So my wife is an avid runner and athlete (numerous half marathons, full marathons, ironmans, etc), and she has convinced me that now that I'm 170 lbs lighter, to do a half marathon (13.1 miles) on St. Patrick's Day. This week I have ran 3 and 4 miles without any major issue, just a little sore the next day. I will continue to train the next couple of months to make sure I'm ready to go. Do you think this will be feasible to do? Any tips or advice on training, prepping for the run, etc? TIA!

  33. Started by Real California April,

So I finished C25K! I then...injured myself and was doing walking only for a bit so I could still lose weight. Now I've started C210K (not continuing since i took a month off) and it is painful to run. The belly jiggle was just embarrassing before but now legitimately hurts. Same with doing non running cardio (jumping jacks, burpees, etc.) Has anyone had this problem and tried compression clothing? Does it help?

In truth, I have been trying off and on for a couple years now, but I struggle to do much of anything. Walking is quite difficult, and I can't stand for very long at all before my hips and lower back are in agony. Aside from that, my muscles all feel very, *very* tight, ALL the time. I've tried stretching in the past, and it doesn't help. Everything hurts incredibly, so much that in the past, I have just quit trying. Hey guys. I was checking to see if any of you notice it's damn near impossible to lose weight while training for long distance vents. For the last 4 years I've been participating in triathlons (sprints to half Ironman races) and running (5ks to full marathons) and my weight does not budge. If anything I gain a little weight. I was wondering how you guys handle that situation. I had the lapband 5 years ago and lost 40 lbs right away, but nothing else (236lbs to 195lbs)!!!!!!! I still have at least 50lbs to lose. Thanks Melissa

There is little doubt that sedentary behavior is bad for your health. Many people claim that “sitting is the new smoking,” even though the two are not really comparable. Smoking is orders of magnitude worse than being sedentary, and given the choice, people should opt to do neither. The interesting thing is that increasing your level of physical activity results in health benefits regardless of what your baseline step count is. In one Canadian study, diabetics were randomized to usual care, or an exercise prescription given to them by their physicians. The intervention group improved their daily step count from around 5,000 steps per day to about 6,200 steps per day.…
