Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by wendy918,

I am going in for surgery on February 23. How long after surgery did you have to wait to do yoga or hot yoga? I just started to enjoy it and i don't want to take too long of a break from it.

  2. I've been reading studies lately about the effects of exercising or not exercising on weight loss. Naturally there are many questionable articles on the internet, and source is everything. I'm wondering what people's reactions are to this one. I found it quite interesting: http://www.vox.com/2016/4/28/11518804/weight-loss-exercise-myth-burn-calories

  3. Hello, I'm a new here and I can use some help! I have mild rectal intussusception and pelvic floor prolapse. I've been experiencing these problems for the past few years. Due to these issues, I have severe chronic constipation. I had hope to finally have surgery to fix the Intussusception because two doctors recommended it. Before I could have the surgery, I found out I was pregnant. I had a C-Section/Hysterectomy last January. I spent most of lat year getting rejected by doctors to help me. I felt really crappy because these so-called Colo-Rectal Surgeons just left me hanging with so little regard for me. I waited a year and a half to see t…

  6. I have posted several times in the past about Couch to 5k and the fact that I am now training for a half marathon. Throughout those threads, I have received several requests to put together a complete guide to running for those of us starting out as obese. If you are reading this, I am going to assume that you are a.) interested in running and b.) have been or currently are obese. There are a lot of things that heavier people need to take into consideration when they begin running and, while programs like Couch to 5k are great for inactive people, they aren't necessarily targeted at people who are carrying around an extra 80, 100, or more pounds. So I will try to break th…

Yesterday I took the dog for a walk/jog and partway through had to practically drag him and then he pouted, laid down and just kind of told me he needed to catch his breath. Poor thing was exhausted by the time we got home. So to be totally honest, he is kind of out of shape because of not going on walks because of cold weather and me not making him jog before. Nevertheless, I'm pretty proud of myself for tiring him out! I jogged more and more easily than I think I ever have before. Happy moment. Note to the other dog owners, I did watch his paw pads and make sure they were ok.

Hello all, I've been working with a trainer for some time and while I have seen lots of changes in my body my weight has plateaued in the last 3 months. She evaluated what I'm eating and said I need to be at 1500 calories a day...I can easily make just under 1000, 1200 takes more work to keep in my macros and today I will have gotten to 1350. I've got my macros set as: 25% carbs 30% fat 45% Protein She gave me some fasting cardio in between sessions and we are adding Hiit at the end block of the session now. I'll try to do my best with the food in the next week and see if there is a change. My question is- what is everyone else doing and how is it working? …

I am six weeks post-op and have just been given the okay to work out with no restrictions with the stipulation of (don’t go crazy). At this time I am walking inside a mall around 3 to 4 times a week between a mile and ½ and 2 miles with no problems and it takes me anywhere from 35 to 45 minutes at a very leisurely pace. I have an elliptical that I couldn’t use up until now and I would also like to start some type of light weightlifting. I don’t want to go crazy and injure myself and slow my current progress, I’ve lost about 30 pounds and am currently 296 pounds. Any suggestions on how to work into a more well-rounded exercise program would be greatly appreciated T…

This past Sunday I completed another goal I set for myself. I completed the 2017 Disneyland Star Wars Half Marathon. While I wasn't fast I finished in 2:51:33. Despite the look on my face I was actually very happy (almost in tears #revokemancard). This event will hold a special place in my heart. I have completed many 5 and 10k events. My first being in a 5K in November of 2015. Now here I am coming up on my 2 year anniversary in March and completed my first half. Before having this surgery I would have never entertained the idea of running a half let alone anything else.

  15. I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in way too long and I brought my toddler (almost 2 years old) along with me. There's a daycare center that will watch little ones from 4-8 pm so I thought I'd give it a try. LO normally stays home with his grandmother during the day so he's not used to daycare. I was sort of dreading dropping him off because I was afraid he'd cry. Upon seeing all the kids and toys, he wriggled out of my arms and ran straight for the action, banging his hands against the barrier enthusiastically to get in and have fun. Much to my relief, I signed him in, went to the gym and... it was BLISSFUL! I could listen to my music, watch HGTV, and ex…

  17. I am 2 weeks out of surgery, so I am just doing some regular walking and trying to hit my fitbit goals everyday. However, I used to lift a lot of weights as a younger man and I am looking forward to getting back into that to minimize some of the saggy skin and just build a bigger engine. I would be interested in weightlifing programs and fitness programs people (preferably men) have used and what was the progression of their timeline to start using them? I know, I won't be cleared for another 2-4 weeks to do anything beyond walking, but I want to start preparing.

I workout most days with a total gym, free weights, exercise bike and a simply fit board. I have 125 pounds on a hand truck and I've noticed that it is getting really tough to get it up steps. In general I feel weaker. I've always been strong just by working and now with working out I'm struggling. 22. I was at the gym today to spend some time in the pool and then the whirlpool. It was a quiet as I have ever seen it there, most likely because everyone is at home preparing for a weekend of debauchery. But they (the people at the gym) are preparing for an onslaught come Monday. That is when all the New Year's Resolution people will start showing up in droves. I was talking to my acquaintance the trainer. I asked him how long it would take for most of them to fall by the wayside and give up. He gave it two months, maximum. I laughed at the expected lack of committment, and then commented that maybe I shouldn't, seeing as how I had only been there a month myself. …

But I have a really hard time just walking any distance right now. So I am wondering right after surgery, say first week, third week and then say sixth week, how much exercise have you done? 26. Wondering if anyone here trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or a similar type of grappling or MMA. I trained for several years before gaining too much weight and now that my surgery is over I'd like to get back into it. It's very high-impact in terms of physical contact, a lot of core movements, and lots of pressure on body parts, especially the abdomen. There's even a position called "knee on stomach" with pressure applied directly to the abdomen, so of course I'm worried about my incisions and the stomach itself. For those who do this type of training, I was wondering how long it took after surgery to get back into training and what your experience was like. Thanks! (Th…

I have lots of loose skin, and saggy back thighs and cellulite on my thighs. OK so I was wondering if there is anyone out there in their 40's who was able to accomplish such a feat???? Would you happen to have before and after pictures you don't mind sharing??? Just using exercise, nothing else. I am going to finally take some before pics (for myself) showing the skin front, back (eeewww) and side and compare them next January 2013. I'm super excited! Thanks y'all!!!

I stopped caring about trying to achieve a decent sleep a few months ago, even though I have consistently gone through the motions daily by getting to bed early enough to ensure 8-9 hours. Yet I have not slept soundly, have not achieved a good state of REM state and definitely have not felt rested the following day. I have tried melatonin (up to 10 ml!) and many other herbs at different times to help with getting a decent sleep. I have no problem falling asleep; it is staying asleep and also…

Hi all! I am 11 weeks post op. I have a question about how my heart feels after an overly strenuous activity. When I do cardio for 30 minutes at the gym I am fine and my heart seems to return to resting rate after about 20 minutes. However, on a couple occasions I have attempted to hike with my husband, I am sure I am over-doing it. We hiked Monday (4 days ago), a 4.2 while hike with an elevation gain of 1100 ft, first 2 miles up, then last 2 miles down. it was in high-desert so the top elevation was 6800 ft. Did it in about 2 hrs. I was exhausted. My heart rate took a few hours to return to resting. However, for the next 3 days, my heart pounded hard with any so…

In another post, I mentioned that I had joined a gym for the first time in my life. I grew my muscles the old fashioned way, by hard work. As I am getting older, work isn't all that hard anymore. Maybe that's because I do less of it. So I joined up to lift some weights, perhaps ride a machine or two, and get back in shape. And, the gym has a pool. We used to have a pool here at the LittleBIll compound, but it started to rust out, so it is no more. It was only good for floating around with a beer anyway. Besides, swimming outside in December isn't exactly my idea of fun, or even sanity. I've been there about two weeks now, and have had several adventures there. …

I'm quite happy with my legs so I've been doing a lot of ab and arm exercises instead for the last few weeks. The first week or so, when I worked out, I wore my old chest strap heart rate monitor as well as the FitBit, so I could compare the two. I'm wanting to really do this, but how do you work macros when you can't eat more than 1 cup at a time?
