I given up on cardio machines at the gym. I find them boring. My gym has several different options but I don't care for any. So before gym I go walking (minimum 3miles). After that I get on one of the machines for about ten minutes and then do either my upper or lower body whichever day it is.

  4. So I finally decided to hit the workouts harder. Usually I stuck to alot of walking, and the elliptical. October 2015 was my 1 year mark with the band- as of right now I am holding at a 100lbs loss. I reached the 100lbs loss around the 1 yr mark....needless to say I have been stalled...no scale movement. Only up a few then back down. At 5'5 I'm still considered fat at 150 I have started insanity....currently on week 2. Starting to see a bit of definition but 0 weight loss.... I feel great but the whole scale thing is messing with my head.. anyways....everyone says they all have stalls, but mine seems sooooo long compared to the norm..I know I don't eat alot...ever. but…

  6. Just curious what event fellow WLS patients may be planning on doing. It could be a way to meet others at one of them. So what's on your upcoming "to do" list? Event name? Date? Location?

Well, I did it! I finally did it! I signed up for my first triathlon! Walking/running, biking and swimming have always been my favorite activities, mostly because I didn't have to be overly coordinated to be successful. (I played volleyball, basketball, softball, etc. as a kid, but was terrible.) Because I like all three activities, I have many times thought I would like to try a tri, but knew I wasn't ready for a full tri. One of the women in my WLS support group asked me to try a super-sprint tri with her in August. So today I bit the bullet and paid the fee and I am signed up! For those like me who don't know, a super sprint tri is 200 yards swimming, 7.5 mil…

I'm not trying to advertise for the company. But they really are great. I've had my Up 24 band for a while. It stopped lighting up. I think I exposed it to water to much to many times. But I wrote an email to customer service, over a week ago. They called me several times. (I don't answer calls I don't know) they also sent several emails. Trying to contact me. Well finally I called them. They rep was super nice and walked me through resetting it. And when that didn't work, he's sending me a new upgraded band. So helpful. Besides that the main reason I purchased a Jawbone product was the app, love it and it pars with myfitnesspal. I love them together. …

I looked through the Fitness and Exercise posts for something specific but didn't find any info. I am wondering about Post-Workout Recovery. Specifically, how to maximize the recovery, efficiently. If I do something that makes many muscles sore for 2-3 days, I am looking for a way to shorten that time down to 2 days or less. In this specific case, I am not lifting weights, so I can't lesson the lift, or the reps. It was a group workout doing things like bosu ball pushups and bosu ball plank jacks, mountain climbers, assisted pull-ups, russian twists with 10# med balls, one legged squats and a bunch of boxing bag punching. I waited the usually day before working out again,…

Can I just say how satisfying it is to say I am a lap swimmer instead of I used to be a lap swimmer or I want to be a lap swimmer? I just got out of the pool after a great swim. I feel tired but really good. And, the sun is shining and spring is on the way!

About 2 months ago I took a fitness assessment (Active Metabolic Assessment) that involved taking measurements (heart rate, etc.) while on an elliptical machine. I did 15 minutes on the machine to establish a base line, had a short rest, and then did another 15 minutes at increasing resistance every 2 minutes. With 20 seconds to go my knees buckled and I was not able to continue. After 2 months of almost daily exercise the same thing happened about 45 minutes into a group fitness class today. I was on an elliptical machine doing interval training and my knees buckled again without warning. I am hoping to avoid this happening again and don't have any history of pr…

Belly dancing is definitely the exercise for me!! It's more of a total body workout than you'd think. The fact that it's fun makes it that much easier to do. I have some great DVDs that I use but maybe one day I'll actually go to a class. Who else is enjoying dance?

Hi All!! In preparation for my plastic surgery consult (and hopefully procedures) this spring I've upped my workouts to try and get into the best possible shape. I hate that even after all of my successes, I still let the number on the scale dictate my moods and my actions. In the past, when I've started working out harder I gave up because the number on the scale actually went UP. Logically, I know this is inflammation, Water retention, possibly not getting enough calories and going into starvation mode...anything but "real" weight gain. BUT, I let it get to me anyway and would stop working out (which of course didn't result in losing a bunch of weight, lol). Curre…

  21. I am 2.5 weeks post op and just started C25K. I completed week 1. My question revolves around my speed. I am doing this on my treadmill, so I am very aware of the speeds at which I am running and walking. Currently I am walking 2.5 mph and running at 3.6 mph. I know this is incredibly slow, but my legs feel like tree trunks when I run. So my question is, should I just not worry about speed? Will I get faster as I progress? Or should I maybe repeat week 1, and try to increase my speeds? Thanks in advance!!

Good thing, because I can't get it assembled with the existing band. Does anyone who uses one have any insight on trying to get the band to work or am I just better off waiting for the new band?

So last year I may have said "never again" but like childbirth pain, apparently you forget marathon pain! I signed up for my second for Memorial Day weekend. Same one I ran last year--my sister talked me into it. It will be her first (she's lost 80lbs without surgery and kept it off over 5 years!) and I will earn my "s." (As I "I run marathonS" lol). Any other distance runners currently training for a race? I have a few half marathons and ragnars on the way to May 28th and then the main event. Would love to swap stories!

I did it. I am now registered for a 5k - my first EVER. It is a virtual race, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to be walking it rather than running, but adding in a few bursts of speed to get my time down would be nice. The race is end of March-first of April time frame and I just started really walking again for exercise. I have an app that I use that should help me track my progress, but looking for some advice from real people as well. Have any of you gone this route as a method of exercise? How did it go for you? Any advice?

I have a couple questions about biking for you more seasoned cyclists. I'm trying to vary my cardio so I've finally started using my very nice Electra Townie which I bought five years ago and then hung on a wall to gather dust. As nice as the bike is, I'm wondering if I should get a different one as I don't think that cruisers are really meant for serious exercise. If I were to get another bike, is there a relatively inexpensive option anyone could recommend? Secondly, I've noticed for the past couple days that I get kind of nauseous towards the tail end of my hour long ride. Do I just need to drink more whilst riding or is there another explanation?

With some recent knee problems (osteoarthritis) I have been advised to add swimming to my exercise routine to replace the elliptical machine and treadmill. I finally got in the pool today and swam some laps. There were no issues with my knee while swimming - Yaaah! It's been a while since I swam for exercise and I need some advice on how to add swimming to my routine. For example: - Can I swim after lifting weights? - Should I swim before lifting weights? - Should I swim only on days when I am not lifting weights? - On days when I swim should that be the only exercise of the day (i.e. not added to other cardio like rowing)? - In the pool I noticed…

My exercise of choice is swimming so since I have been snowbound I haven't gotten much exercise. I took a Tai Chi class several years ago. Last night I dreamt of Tai Chi. So since I am so close to surgery I am starting to think about what my fitness routine is going to be post-op (once I get the okay from the doctor). I know its not going to be "Fittin'this whole pizza in my mouth" anymore! So my question is, as far as home gym equipment, treadmills, elliptical, bikes, max trainers, free weights, etc. which have you enjoyed the most? Typically at the gym I am an elliptical girl and I don't really enjoy the treadmill too much but I feel like a home elliptical is going to take up so much room! I was thinking about a punching bag, a few kettle bells, a roman chair, resistance bands, and some DVDs would probably be better than a cardio machin…

  38. I'm an EMT (not a firefighter) and am trying to join my local Fire Dept. as an EMT. One of the qualifications is that I obtain a physical exam, it's the same physical firefighters go through, with gear on and all. Part of the reason I had VSG surgery was to get in better shape so I can be a better EMT. But right now, I'm completely out of shape! I did join a gym a few weeks back and I've just been walking on the treadmill, as it's the only thing I can handle at this point. Help! How do I get in shape in 2 months or attempt to do so? Just a week ago, I was posting about how I was returning to running after a 5 month hiatus. I did a little "trial run" on my treadmill and surprised myself by running for 10 minutes straight, right out of the gate, then doing some more long intervals that same workout. I had thought I might have to completely restart C25k, but that run put me safely back into week 6. Well, I did Week 6 last week (finished it Monday), and as any of you who have completed C25k know, after Week 6, it's just straight-up long runs, just tacking on a few minutes each week. I had planned all along to try to get back into racing form by April so I could sign up for a 5k. I live in upstate NY, s…

I've never been a regular exercising type of person until now. I am really into walking and have been doing it consistently for going on two months - at least 2.5 miles a day, 5 days a week average. I've gone out in the early morning and then again in the afternoon or evening sometimes I'm enjoying it so much. I've been able to fit in up to 5 miles on some of those days. I just had to reglue my walking shoes - the soles came off! But I've been running into issues with both pain and stiffness the last couple of weeks as I'm working on upping my distance/time and adding in a little (very) slow jogging. My hips started hurting - sounds like bursitis - so I added in so…

I chose this because we can't wear watches/wristbands/etc at my job due to safety rules & regs. Very archaic rule....but it is what it is. The ONE in my pocket does a great job of tracking things for me......so long as I have my keychain with me. I don't always have it on me, though. I also think some of the other metrics such as sleep activity would be interesting to track and am considering adding one of their wristband models. I'd wear it all the time except for wor…

Apologies if I didn't find this in my search, but I'd like to know how far out from surgery you are and what your workout routine is. I'm just over a month from my sleeve, but a gallbladder removal set me back another month before I can start working out. Personally, I'll be working out at home using my heavy bag, treadmill, weights, bicycle and a yoga mat. I'll miss swimming but a gym membership is too expensive so we got the treadmill instead. Even if you go to the gym- what do you do? How many days, which exercises, etc.? Thanks- I hope this helps others too.

We had purchased some land a couple years ago and ultimately planned to build on it in another couple of years. But somehow I stumbled upon a listing for a house that seemed to have almost everything we wanted in our "dream house" with the added bonus of already existing in this world. So we went to check it out in person. From that day forward, my life was a chaotic whirlwind. We decided we wanted the house. A couple of problems there. My Fitness Pal has been great. I have logged my food and exercise routines for 763 days straight. But enough is enough. Time to let it go. I pretty much know "what" and "how much" I can eat and how much exercise it takes to keep things in check. Believe me, it's no picnic after you reach goal. Deviate any little bit and the weight pops back on like a compressed sponge. The hunger is back, the cravings are back......My guess is the ghrelin hormone is probably back in full production too. And the ole sleeve is easily capable of stretching past that post surgery luxury of only 3 ounces. All which makes maintenance an increased challenge. …
