Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. I took a hiatus from my workouts for about 2-mos owing to extensive travel and work schedules. LAME, LAME, LAME excuses I KNOW!!! Now that I have retuned to the gym, I find that I have zero endurance and stamina, as well as my legs hurt when I do one lap on the indoor track. This is worse than when I began my workouts a year ago, so not all of what I am experiencing can be attributed to the two month hiatus. I am looking for any recommendations for increasing my endurance and stamina so that I can get through a meaningful workout. I understand that I have to work back up to the level I was at, but I need some immediate help to get me there. Is there some supplement re…

I have now worked my way up to a vigorous walk everyday for about 35 min. The only thing I have to complain about is not having very good walking shoes. I am now 190 lbs and have been wearing Birkenstock's for far too many years and my foot has spread to a wide size at the toes. Does anyone have any recommendations for a shoe that I won't have to mortgage my home for?

I just began exercising after years of nothing. I'm losing weight like crazy again ..... Yet some days my lack of motivation annoys me. Any suggestions. Help!

  5. I'm pretty sure it's a bad-ish thing, as it certainly doesn't feel good. Not painful though. The tingling is mostly at the back of my head, and it's also sometimes accompanied with a cold feeling through my body. I feel a little faint, but nowhere close to actually fainting. I brought it up to my personal trainer a few weeks ago, and he didn't know what it was and jokingly said it was endorphins pumping. Yesterday I started the day with a 3 mi. interval (1:1) jog and walk. I had a pre-workout snack an hour before PT (5pm), but I still went into it with under 400 calories for the day. I had a head tingling spell during my session (very intense circuit with cross-jacks,…

I had surgery last week on my knee finally. 2 tears in the meniscus and scraped some arthritis out from behind my knee cap. Not a bad recovery so far. My Dr. didn't prescribe any rehab physical therapy for this but I am wanting to do some myself other than just walking. Any suggestions on some good exercises to rehab the knee and get me back out on the hiking trail soon? Anyone else have experience with this surgery? Thanks in advance.

I want to do some working out everyday but always decide to stay in my bed. I know it is bad for me to be sedentary and inactive but yet everyday I decided to stay in bed. Becoming immobile, picturing my family blaming themselves for my death by obesity, developing a stroke or heart disease, or even ending up in a hospital bed does not motivate me. I have dreams, goals and even reasons for why I want lose weight but they are not strong enough to reach me and get me self motivated to get out of bed everyday and workout at least 30 minutes a day. I can't even motivate myself to do at least 5 minutes of exercise everyday. Not even rewarding myself motivates me. Nothing motiv…

I recently got a new Note 4, and I am loving the fitness apps it comes with, but I have a problem with the exercise app. It only shows four exercises: walking, running, hiking, and cycling. I swim as my exercise, and I have found no way to add that. Does anyone who has one know how to either add a new exercise, or how to add calories burned? My physical therapist worked out how many calories I burn each time.

So, has anyone else had to deal with knee injuries after weight loss? I have been hiking, walking and riding my exercise bike a lot! I started feeling some discomfort and pain. I went and saw the Dr, had an MRI and today found out that I have a tear in my medial AND lateral meniscus. Great, surgery again. BUT, this won't stop me. He gave me a brace and I can still do my walks, just nothing extreme and no bike for awhile. Has anyone else ever had this?

  13. Hi everyone, I'm six weeks post op as of this past Monday. Got cleared to weight lift FINALLY this past wednesday. New program begins Monday. I have been an avid weightlifter all my life and am a strength and conditioning coach. Including pre-op diet and surgery, as of this morning I am 93.5 pounds down since surgery on October 13. I began this journey weighing 432 and this morning weighed 338.5. I power lift, olympic lift, train with kettle bells, basically everything under the sun. I am wondering about what experiences people have had beginning their workout routine again. How did your strength come back, were there any surprises as you began training, good or…

It's 4am, Thanksgiving morning...sitting here having my first cup of coffee. The gym opens at 5, they close at noon.....and I plan on being there when the doors open. Do I feel motivated? Do I feel like I have the energy? HECK NO! It's my day off, it's freezing outside....I should crawl back into my warm bed and enjoy my day off from work. Then enjoy a lazy day of food, family, and football. But I'll go....I have felt this way many times before, and have always come up with good excuses not to before.... I say this because it is easy for everyone to find some reason not to exercise...not to be active....and I have found a few truths I want to share. 1) I know, …

  15. hey all, still perplexed about joining a gym. i went this week to a local one at got a trial 1-week thing to try it out. it was good, but i have also been exercising at home with resistance bands and dumbbells, plus walking. FYI- i have a great treadmill at home AND work, plus a bike at both too. i want to get some strength so i'm not sure if i NEED to go to a gym, or if working out at home like i have been will work. the HUGE issue for me (besides the money commitment), is the drive to the gym, and the gas spent doing it. i would have to go at about 4:45 am before i start my day just due to my crazy life/work schedule and kids. the time thing i could handle but if i…

I day I start with a personal trainer. I'm a little over 3 months post-op - was sleeved on April 21, 2014. I've only been doing cardio, for the most part - walking, treadmill, elliptical and now doing the couch-to-5K app outside since the weather is gorgeous. The problem is that I know nothing about strength and weight training and I'm not the kind of person who can watch a YouTube video to work on it - I need a teacher, I need actual guidance - someone to tailor something for my needs, watch my form and most importantly - keep me accountable!! I'd prefer not to have any more surgery and I think the best way to avoid cosmetics/plastics is to really kick the weight train…

Over the last several weeks I started working out about 5 days a week, about 1-1 1/2 hours per session, and two days with a personal trainer. Prior to this my only exercise has been walking. I would average between 6000-10000 steps a day on my fitbit. During this time I would average between 500-700 calories a day and never really have any hunger between meals. Since starting my new workout routine, I notice that I never seem to be full. I increased my caloric intake and Protein by adding 1 to 2 extra Protein shakes a day extra bring my calorie count to around 800-1000. Is this enough? Did you increase your protein after you started a regular exercise routine?

  18. Hi everyone. I'm wondering if a regular exercise program before surgery will help with your recovery, weight loss and the dreaded skin sag? I've heard that if you have more muscle before surgery you'll burn fat better and you'll possibly have less saggy skin issues. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Orthopedic appointment X-rays and MRI later, and I'm benched and on steroids. He told me my running is the worst thing I could do to my body, followed by my p90x being the second worst. I love running, love it love it need to have it. And I only have 3-1/2 weeks left before I can say I completed p90x. 25. Just wanted to throw it out there. It has been a dream of mine for some time to become a competitive bodybuilder in the female fitness category. I know it is hard to get in calories and Protein when you are trying to bulk with a sleeve but the way I figure it, I can do quite a lot with supplements on the protein and calories front. We'll see. I'm 10 months out and have met my goal but would like to lose another 5 - 10 pounds. I work out pretty hard in my basement 6 days a week. I have lots of good equipment and it's been convenient exercising at home with my busy restrictive schedule, but I think I need to vary my routine to get my weight loss moving again. I was going to buy an exercise bike but am thinking of joining a local gym that has lots of spin classes instead. The group setting might get me moving more than just peddling alone in my basement. Recommendations?

I warm up and cool down, stay hydrated during and after.. Take daily vitamins.. So Im really confused and not sure what Im doing wrong but lately the morning after my (mostly evenings) workout sessions I have found bumpy bruises on my arms, hands and legs/thighs. Some of them have been a couple inches wide but also smaller ones with tiny pebble-like bumps underneath.. Is that common for people who workout regularly? 39. Hi All, I am a 39yo guy living in Sydney. I had a gastric sleeve operation 4 months ago and my life has changed dramatically. I have lost about 32kg (70lb) in that time, including pre-op liquid diet and now I no longer snore, have heaps more energy and look and feel better. I've been worried about the weather changing and the need for working out indoors again after an amazing summer of outdoor walking and some biking, etc. Well, today was the day to go back to the basement. Arthritis flares up at less than 50 degrees and we've had some mornings in the 30s already, so I think the jig is up. I've worked out for years on a treadmill, recumbent bike and BowFlex but it's only post-band that I've truly embraced exercise. It was amazing to feel the difference in the basement -- 3.8 instead of 3.0 as my base speed and a total of 90 minutes now instead of 60. I am so happy that I'm still going to be able to get my "high" and I can tell that the…

I'm four months post-op, have gone from 276 to 212 (yay!) and I alternate days of slow jogging with whole-body weight training at my gym (I have a trainer). For the past few days i've had a generalized back pain from about my lower rib area to mid shoulder blades, and it's lousy! It hurts when I sit or stand, but not lying down so much. I'm trying to figure out if this is due to just the usual trainer-change to my routine (not much significant changed) or maybe weight loss affecting my posture, and if so - what the heck can i do about this. Anyone?? OUCH…

But now I'm starting to see progress, and I'm super excited!!

I hear that walking and exercising is key to recovery. But I have absolutely no energy, and I tire so quickly. Not to mention feeling so weak. When will I get my strength and energy back? Am I on queue or behind in regards to post-op recovery? Is something wrong? I read about people exercising and jogging, I'm doing good just to get every day things accomplished.
