Major breakthrough this week: I no longer require a walking partner. I have a few good ones, but in the past when no one else was available I tended to skip that day. This is a pretty major walk around a lake and I benefit from it in so many ways. Twice this week I have gone alone (caveat, I do take my dog, who has to run to keep up with me) and it turns out I prefer it! I can go as fast as I want. I can do intermittent jogging to get my pulse up. I can stretch and stop/start/stop/start for an increase in cardio. I can think and let my mind wander rather than converse. The main thing is that before I was walking to benefit the other person -- that was my motivati…

Hi all!! I'm 4 1/2 weeks post op. SW 322 Surgery day 311 CW 288. I'm just beginning working out more that a couple of small walks a day. Any suggestions for helping Cottage Cheese Thighs?? My stomach has some too, but I also carried Twins...I'm guessing only surgery will help that. Any exercise suggestions would be great. Thanks!!!

I was sleeved 10/24. From August through the night before surgery I have been doing CF about 2-3 times per week. Obviously I have been completely off now…my doctor has a 4-6 week lift restriction. At my one week post-op last week with the surgeon and the PA, the surgeon said his guideline is start the regular exercise program 4 weeks out, putting off any lifting over 25 pounds until 6 weeks. HIs guideline: If you do it now and it hurts, stop. If you do it after 6 weeks and it hurts, do it anyway. He said if I want I can do some limited PVC work now…but frankly, he doesn't really know how CF works. I said, "What about weight lifting, say anything over 50 pounds?" He said…

I used to use Fatsecret to log my food when I was doing Atkins. But I have a Fitbit now and I've seen lots of people on here loving MFP, so I downloaded it to use, since it syncs with the fitbit. But, in Fatsecret I was able to have it show net carbs, not just total carbs. Total carbs minus g of Fiber = net carbs. Also, I'd like to be able to manually adjust my calorie and carb goals and I don't see that available without paying the huge upgrade fees. I wouldn't mind paying something for it but not that much. Am I just missing something somewhere?

I have my first appointment today. It's a mandatory 2.5 hour health class that my insurance provider uses as its first step. I wanted to ask others here - I can't be the only one. Will getting sleeved help make working out easier? I'm almost 47. I was always big into working out. From my early teens through my time in the Air Force and until just after I finished my Masters (2006). I can remember throwing around 375lbs on the bench press like it was a toy.... or running 10 - 15 miles with 100 lbs of gear like it was nothing. Then I lost my way. It got harder and harder to keep the weight off, and harder and harder to work out. I'm praying that this s…

My butt it's aching something awful today! But I'll take it in stride because yesterday I rode my bike for the first time in about 2 years, and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I remember it was last time I rode it. We did about 4 miles too. Best of all, I was able to keep a promise to my son that we'd ride together once I was healed from surgery.

I know this is typically a space reserved for sharing questions and advice about exercise and fitness mechanics, trends, and tips. But sometimes it's just so stinking expensive to get ahold of a proper set of kettlebells, barbells, or other exercise equipment. Well, I've had enough and have decided to make my own and I wanted to share this process with you all in case it can be of use to anyone else. Before I begin, let me be clear that I do not believe one needs any formal equipment to develop and maintain a high level of fitness - I'm all about natural movements and the joy of using your own body in work & play. However, I also recognize the desire among many of u…

I am 1 week and 2 days post op. My doctor told me to start cardio 30-45 minutes 3x a week. I love walking, I used to love hiking, I used to love the recumbent bike. I don't belong to a gym yet so yesterday I walked up varied hills. There was some hill, some flat some downhill. I broke a sweat but the demand on me changed throughout the walk so I'm not sure this is a good enough answer. I tried the recumbent bike at work, which is a glorified home version and I hated it- I think I would like the gym quality one again though. I have to say- I'm a little at a loss. From 0-30/45 is a bit much so I think maybe I should work up to 30 minutes- I want to exercise and I d…

I go to the gym five -six days a week, but when I am there I mostly do cardio (eliptical, treadmill, arc trainer, rowing and have just added spinning) and three days a week I add the strength machines for my arms. I need to tone my midsection, and inner thighs. I was wondering if anyone has used the Beachbody on demand and if it is worth the 2.99/week. I want something that I can do at home in addition to the gym, however I am looking for something to tone and define my body. Thanks!

I just learned about the PACT app. Has anyone else used it? Apparently you can get paid for doing the things we do anyway like logging our food or exercising. But as added motivation it also charges you if you don't keep your committment to your "pact". I'm going to give it a try but I'm curious if anyone else has had experience with it.

I signed up for the FroYo5k a couple of weeks before surgery, and today was the day! There were a lot of people there and a ton of strollers, but in the areas where the course opened up, I ran. Not fast, but consistently. I would say I maybe ran just under half the total course. And it felt really good. My feet didn't hurt, my shins didn't burn, I was able to maintain my breathing, and I finished in less than 50 minutes! It's so much easier to move this body without an extra 52 lbs to slow me down and crush my knees. Now I feel a lot more confident about preparing for the Disneyland Half Marathon later this year.

I am leaving for vacation on Friday after work. We'll be driving down to Gatlinburg, TN where we'll be staying in a cabin with my parents, my sister's family, and my sister's best friend's family. There will be 17 of us in all, but 7 of them are children under 10. Anyway, the cabin we are going to is up in the mountains where the roads are very twisty and narrow and I don't think I'd feel safe jogging on them. We WILL be doing a lot of shopping and trips to the amusement park where we'll do a lot of walking, so I think I will get lots of walking in throughout my days, but no intense cardio. My current cardio routine is working on couch to 5k every other day and altern…

I am right about 3 months post-op (Sleeved 01/16/15) and have been pretty steadily losing. Very slowly, but slowly is more than none- so I will take it! I am wondering if my workout routine (mainly my strength training) is slowing my loss by building muscle? I've heard that muscle is heavier than fat, is that true? My stats: SW: 285 Surgery day: 271 CW: 238.2 Here is my routine- let me know what you think: 1. I go to the gym 3-4 times per week 2. One mile on the treadmill with incline intervals; For .2 miles I get up to 3.4 mph. Then every .05 miles, I increase the incline by 2, up to 8. Then, at 8, every .05 miles I go back down by 2 and work up a good swea…

So tonight I did my first spin class. OMG it was hard work. I felt it was a victory that I made it through the entire class. However, I have a question. Is it normal to have pain in the groin area from the seat?? I felt like a fire breathing animal was chewing my crotch off. My pelvic bones are so sore. I think if I can get used to the pelvic pain I would like the class. Guess I need to tough up my bones or find some padded underwear. LOL

I used exercise to help me get to goal. I had quite a bit to lose, so felt I needed "everything" to attain my health and weight goals. Well, I did better than I dared dream - hitting my goal over 2 years ago. For a variety of reasons, I have backed off on intense exercise over the last 6+ months and Saturdays shopping trip was quite an eye opener. At the same weight, I wear 1-2 pant sizes bigger than I did when I was working our regularly. Worse than that, the gain in inches seems to be mostly in my waist, so I am losing that "younger shape" and getting the middle aged thicker waist look. yikes! Well, I am middle aged, but I am fitting the thick waist as long as I…

I'm still pre-op (bypass in June hopefully) but I want to increase my exercise now and hopefully become one of these people who loves to work out afterward Currently, I walk, usually just 1.5 miles/day taking my dog, so it's not always fast or continuous, depending on his need to sniff. I also have a nice bike I plan to start using again soon but I know doing some weights would help with strength and possibly reduce the loose skin a little bit afterward (I'm 53 and realistic!) I bought a Jillian Michaels DVD for kettlebells and still need to buy a/some bells but was wondering if anyone else uses them?

Anyone working on this right now? I just started week 5. This is actually my third time doing C25k. I first did it back in 2011 during one of my many attempts to lose weight "on my own", but of course, I eventually fell of the wagon and stopped eating right and exercising and regained all the weight. I did it again in the summer of 2013, but ultimately the same result. This will be my third time getting all the way through it, but I am hoping that this time I will keep up with the running. I want to run several 5k races this spring/summer. Planning to do at least one per month starting in May.

AS I type this post, I'm thinking about what kind of responses I'm hoping to get from the BP community. For me, accountability is everything. I'm open to hearing suggestions/feedback and also hoping to get some support from others to keep moving! I am 11 months out from gastric sleeve surgery and am still struggling to implement a consistent exercise routine. I wouldn't consider myself nonactive by any means. I have been hiking 6-12+ mile hikes since before surgery. Problem is there is NO consistency. I will go walking for 1-1.5 hours one day and then not walk or exercise for five days. I have really only "exercised" a handful of times since my surgery 11 months a…

I'm 3 weeks post- RNY, 2 weeks post adhesion release for a bowel obstruction. I'm limited to walking right now, which is fine because it's my favorite form of activity. I thought I got nauseated on a two mile walk a few days ago because I forgot to take Water with me. It took hours to recover. The next day I drank plenty of water during my walk, still got nausea but it didn't last as long. Saw my Nut yesterday and she feels I may be doing too much at once. Did 4 one mile walks yesterday and was fine. Today, I slowed it down a bit but tried 1.5 miles because I won't have time for 4 walks. Nausea is back, it's kind of really frustrating. Ok, I just wanted to rant.

I have been working out (mostly Cardio) the first 7 months of having the Band, I started Working with a Trainer and doing more Weight Training and have upped my Cardio. I am preparing for a 5k this weekend. But I have noticed that it seems like my band has Tightened on its own, I haven't needed a fill since January I only have a 8cc band and have about 7cc already. I am having a hard time some days keeping anything down. it is mostly mid morning that it happens but It has been kind of Worrying me and I am thinking I may need to go see my doctor and get a small unfill and see if that changes anything. has anyone had this happen to them once they started working out more?…

Has anyone here ever done the Warrior Dash? I've set a goal to do the one in my area on August 1st. It feels like an extremely ambitious goal, in that there's no way on earth I could do it today, and I'll need to train like the devil to make it. I like to set stretch goals, and this definitely qualifies. If you've done it before, what did you think? Did you use the App to train? If so, did it set your expectations appropriately? Any input would be most appreciated!

I pushed myself harder today than I have in the past decade on my bike ride. It was a beautiful day here in Portland Oregon so I just kept pushing. In the end, I biked 54 miles with decent hills, at over 12mph average. It's over 4400 calories and I feel like I can't quite recover, I feel nauseous and can't stop sweating even though I've been home for an hour and took a long cool-down shower. I've eaten 860calories of very healthy Protein rich foods, and some sugars which I just felt I needed. But I'm full now. Also, I've had 96ounces of Water so far today. (I currently weigh 235lbs, 55 pounds from my target) Any suggestions?
