Fitness & Exercise

Fitness and exercise after weight loss surgery. Workouts, strength training, routines, and staying active for the long haul.

  1. Started by monalyssa33,

Does anyone have any ways to fix posture after weight loss? It's hard to not stand like I still have an additional 185 pounds on me, but I don't know how to fix it. I saw a physical therapist for a few weeks to strengthen my core to prevent back pain and I know that can also help with posture.

Hey everyone. Before I had my kiddo and gained a bunch, I started running barefoot (with Vibrams.) I have gotten back into running buuut can't afford new vibrams. When I typed barefoot into Amazon, they came back with water shoes. Has anyone run in these? Is it similar to a barefoot shoe? I know they won't last as long but I'm ok seeing as they're cheap. 5. Hello Everyone. My name is Erica but in the social media world I go by the name Bariatric Butterfly. I’m a WLS Sister who had the Duodenal Switch in 2009. At my highest I weighed 399 lbs. On the day of surgery I weighed 384 lbs. Surgery got me down to roughly 210 lbs or so, but I managed to get myself back up to 230 lbs before getting real with myself. As of today, I’m weighing in at 164 lbs and have been able to maintain for a while all without starving and drinking shakes all day every day. Throughout my journey I’ve been asked many times how I’ve managed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and continue to be successful so many years out. I would say perseverance,…

  9. As we age, our bodies degrade. Some of the latest research shows that exercise can minimize this process. The study, published today in the journal Aging Cell, involved 125 healthy cyclists of both genders, between the ages of 55 and 79. They underwent physical testing to obtain a range of health data, whose results were then compared to those from two other healthy groups – aged 20 to 36, and 57 to 80, totaling 130 people in all – who were not physically active. Those in poor health, or adults who drank heavily, smoked or had high blood pressure, were kept from participating. Specifically, the scientists focused on the cyclists' thigh muscle, or VL for vastus …

Hey y’all! I used to be a personal trainer before I had gained all of my weight and I used to workout like crazy! I’ve started to get back into working out and I was doing 5 days a week! Unfortunately every time I would workout, I would weigh myself the next day (I know, I have a problem and I know I need to stop) and I would either have gained weight or stayed the same. This was going on for about 4 weeks! But the days that I didn’t workout, that’s when I lost weight. Did anyone else have this problem? If so, what did you do to continue to lose weight? Thank you in advance!! HW: 253 SW: 234 CW: 189 Sleeved: 10/23/17 Female, 5’6”, 22 yrs old

Hi all, I’m going to have surgery in a few days (yay!) and I’m realizing now that the pre-workout and aminos I use require a lot of liquid to be consumed, since it’s a powder you mix into 16 oz of water. Has anyone altered the supplements they use post-surgery or do you just consume them slower?

  14. I'm 3 months out today, and starting in January I've gone back very slowly to lifting at the gym. A little background: I love lifting, and used to be pretty heavy into picking things up and putting them down again. About 4 years ago my husband and I started biking together, and my lift routine had to be cut back drastically so I could actually get my legs to cooperate on our routes. Sadly, I got heavier and we biked less and less and in November 2017 I had gastric bypass. SO, I have lots of questions for the lifters on here: 1. What is your current lift routine? 2. What was your experience starting after WLS, were you new to lifting or just getting back to business? 3. W…

So before surgery I was killing it with exercising. I did cardio 3 times a week and strength training 3 times a week as well. I was doing so good that during my bypass surgery, my surgeon said he was shocked at the amount of muscle he had to work through. Which made me feel a little bad ass. So here I am, 13 days after surgery and ready to get back in the gym but I'm wanting to be smart. I started today with 15 minutes on the treadmill and 5 minutes on the bike (which didn't feel great). I feel like I did nothing, didn't even break a sweat. So let me ask you guys, what are you doing? Can I push it harder? Am I being impatient? How do I know what's too much? Sent from my R…

My ideal workout routine would be to incorporate my family, but I am afraid I will get lazy. What works for everyone? Any suggestions? Right now my routine is work out from home I don’t have a consistent routine but I do work out 3-4 days a week at least 30 minutes at home.

So 3 weeks ago, I threw my back out. I don't even have a fun story. I pulled my chair in to a table and my back said "nah, I'm going to stay here." Cue agonizing pain. The worst part was that I was on a 3rd story rooftop bar with my friend, 9 hours from home. I learned the bar didn't have a service elevator, so I had to take a few shots to get downstairs. I could barely stand up, I needed something to dull the pain! The 9 hour drive home wasn't much better either. Fun times! ANYWAYS. I've been going to the gym 2-3 times a week like clockwork. I'll do Zumba, yoga and/or step class usually. I have now been unable to go for the past 3 weeks. Once upon a time, I wo…

I've started working out, 15 mins cardio & starting on weight machines until I feel comfortable mobbing to free weights, it's been a while since I've been in any kind of athletic shape besides round. I would like to get some muscle growth co compensate for the loose skin I'm going to have especially my arms and chest, I'd hate for my tats to look saggy. I know that I'm gong to be taking a lot of protein in the form of liquid supplements but I was wondering if Creatine is something to consider since I'm on the older side. If anyone has experience or hints I'd appreciate it.

I'm not sure if I should tell them that I'm getting WLS, I already get talked down by other people who think I'm taking the easy way out but I really want to get a clear work out plan for post op body sculpting to lower the chances of lose skin. My insurance is covering the surgery but they will not cover anything they deem cosmetic. So I'm just wondering what everyones take on having a trainer has been.

Is eating whole eggs better than eating egg whites for muscle protein synthesis? An article that I read this morning points in that direction. People who do resistance training to get a more muscular physique are encouraged to eat protein-rich foods or supplements post-exercise to help add muscle. Since egg protein is about as good as it gets, conventional wisdom has been that you should eat egg whites (which contain about 60 percent of an egg's protein complement), but avoid the yolk. However, a recent study questions whether this is really the best advice. Writing in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Dr. Nicholas A. Burd from the University of Illin…

So I'm down about 105 lbs, still have another 100-125 left to lose. I'd like to start walking to gain strength in my legs and hopefully kick start the weight loss so more. Just curious if there are other exercises besides walking that will widdle down the front of my thighs. Those are the worst for me. I've always had a big leg (even when I was smaller) and even though I've gone from a size 32/34 jeans down to a size 24, my legs are still my downfall. I hate them. Hey, you can't go wrong with a Norse explorer. New surgeon put me on Contrave for a few weeks to kick me in the butt. As part of this process, he also asked me to focus on eating 6-8 times a day, with dinner being the only 'meal' and all others being protein focused mini-meals such as a shake, a hunk of cheese, and a deviled egg, a quest bar, a few meatballs, etc. At the same time, I joined the local community center and had a trainer set up a program for me to get started. So, I remember looking up athlete body types a few years back. My focus was on comparing sprinters to long distance runners. I came across an interesting website that shows bodies from many different sports. http://physicalculturist.ca/the-body-shapes-of-the-worlds-best-athletes-compared-side-by-side/ Since we are all here to remake ourselves, I figured it is a good time to ask whether you would be influenced by the finished physique of those in a chosen sport. I know I would be. In college I had a dancer friend. Ballet, modern, etc. Her FEET! I never would want to do what she does (though I admire HER for it).

Does anyone have opinions on the best time of day to workout? I have been told that the best is working out first thing in the AM prior to eating. So far, my body seems happy doing this. I use to workout around 4:30 PM since my job has a free gym but my body, even though I felt fine, wasn't dropping weight. Since I switched to AM I seem to have much more energy during the day and the weight is dropping again. Not sure if it really even matters or if it's just something that is different for everyone. Or why the AM seems to be working best.

So, I started with the Boulder County Bombers yesterday and I have to say... OW! My legs are so sore, it is unbelievable. Mostly, it's my hamstrings and I feel it in the inside (the adductors?) and somewhat in the back... though that could be because most of the times I fell last night, I fell backwards even though I was trying to fall forwards (reason being that all the protective gear has padding on the front, not the back). I had to take a work-at-home day at work today and I'm not going to be moving much today. Having said that, I'm going to be going back to the next practice on Saturday.

I did some research to see what might be the best way to tackle this endeavor. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23790819/ Alright, so I created this chart based on the recommendations in the article. This seems like it could be a very reasonable progression.. a bariatric couch to 5k, if you will. In approximately 7 months, a person following this plan can go from walking 2/3 of a mile at 2mph to running over 3 miles straight. The chart above shows a 10% progression (and indicates the quickest we should advance. More slowly is fine). Time allotted is 20 minutes. …

I have been running more lately and I already pretty much do 5Ks every time I run, but I haven't done an actual "race" since I was 14.
