Gastric bypass (RNY) support. Ask about the procedure, dumping syndrome, the bypass diet, nutrition, weight loss, and complications.

  1. Started by JTSC,

Had not heard of doing the laparoscopic procedure by robot. Doc said is one less incision possibly but I haven’t verified mine yet. 3 minor things I didn’t realize: the robot requires 2 IVs, there’s a catheter involved, and there’s a one shot per day prescription you give yourself. Obviously this may be different for some but just wanted to point it out. I got up one time and walked.....wow, the pain. Now just hitting the medicine button as much as I can.

I’m thinking my surgery will be sometime the end of Christmas or the first of the year.I’ve only got a few more things to do.The sleep study and the psychologist. Boy they run you through the ringer to get this surgery which I guess is a good thing. I know it has taught me patience.LOL I think I saw someone else hear getting their surgery about the same time if you wanna holler back at me. I’m still trying to figure out how this thing works. Ok, I’ll hush. Bye

  3. Started by MsBrown76,

I’m five days post-op RNY and today it feels like my insides are being ripped apart. I’ve barely been able to get liquids in today I feel full. I do sip and sip slowly. I took two pain pills about an hour and a half ago pain has subsided some, but I’m still hurting. Is this because I’m too full, sat wrong? My stomach is hard and i made sure my binder is not too tight. I haven’t had a BM since the day before surgery. I’m taking stool softeners as directed by my physician. I’m passing gas and burping especially when I walk. I’m not sure what this may be or what to do.

Hello everyone! I'm currently 1 week pre-op. Loose skin is something I've been wanting to learn more about. My Dr. says plastics is the only option. So I'm starting to prepare for worse, and saving up. But! Is there any alternative recommendations? And anyone willing to show or there skin experiences? Thank you in advance! [emoji5]

My psychiatrist and I are unsure of whether to change meds or not. There are other stabilizers as an option but i really like this medication (lurasidone). The only problem is that if you don't take it with at least 350 calories, it gives me a horrible stomach ache. So I was wondering if any of you take it and managed to bypass the nausea, and maintain stability.

I just need to tell someone who cares or understands my anguish about going bald my hair is literally coming out in clumps, strands falling out when the wind blows. This is effing devastating. I get 100gms of protein. I drink 80 oz or more of water. I take ALL supplements and NEVER miss. And I **** you not I am literally looking at wigs. I can't even breathe.

Hey y'all. I've noticed for the last 3 weeks after I eat I am getting some pretty fierce heartburn. No reflux coming up, just that clean-burning sensation. I had bad acid reflux and heartburn pre-op that totally disappeared. I am taking Prilosec. It definitely doesn't feel like an ulcer or anything and doesn't hurt while eating. It's a very distinct heartburn sensation. Doesn't seem to be correlated to any type of food. Just happens shortly after I eat anything. Any thoughts on this? I was taking Arthrotec which is an NSAID but also mixed with a medicine to protect your stomach lining (prescribed by my bariatric surgeon and later by my primary care for a disc herniation)…

  8. Started by Migz,

We should all know that with gastric bypass surgery NSAIDS can NEVER be taken again as they can cause bleeding ulcers. Additionally, during my pre-op education I didn’t understand the ramifications of time released medication and potential dosage absorption issues. (These facts were disclosed but until I was effected, I didn’t get it.) After surgery it took forever for my time-released medication to kick in and I had issues with two other medications. I was able to switch to a similar medication that isn’t time-released with the option for a second daily dose. As for the other medications that lost their full effectiveness or I could not tolerate due to nausea, my dos…

  9. And I am so hungry. I’ve been cheating and eating slices of organic deli turkey. Can’t help myself?

  10. Started by Rckc270,

Had an appointment with my surgeon today, he wants me to start the pre-op diet Saturday. RNY scheduled December 09, 2019. I’ve been dieting and eliminating foods for the last 7 months and consider it successful journey so far. I’ve lost 62 pounds now, but I still have a 114 pounds to go before I reach my goal. Just praying I’ve made the right decision.

@FluffyChix, @Sheribear68 @GreenTealael just a thank you for making me feel ok to write this post that I put off out of sheer exhaustion due to post exertional malaise from myalgic Encephalomyelitis chronic illness that effects my entire body life and self. And autism spectrum that makes me fear speaking openly in a forum. My words are not brief enough so I apologize in advance. And if I can’t stay on topic or veer in various directions too. This has been a long time coming a longer fight than my surgery alone. I was reminded of my mom saying how when I was little I said something like what do I do when I get big and my clothes don’t fit as if I’d suddenly be grown …

Hi! I'm having a Mini Gastric Bypass done on the 26th and I am worried about bile reflux. I've read more horror stories than happy ones on multiple forums, so I'm concerned I will end up another victim of bile reflux. Has anyone had a MGB and NOT have reflux? I really want a RNY but the surgeon won't do it. Any advice?

I’ve been trying to stay on top of the pain med, liquids, and protein. The pain is unbearable at times. I think it’s gas. Anyone know how long this will last?

  17. Started by ACinOH,

11.5 weeks in now, I have a stricture and we all know I do. Do is reluctant to dilate it because they are confident it will subside on its on and dilating it can stretch things too much. Ok, that's fine. My question is, has anyone had this and you get into a routing of good days and then it goes back to being a struggle? Last week was hell, then Monday, everything cleared up, I was able to drink anything and eat, still not to 2 oz of meat or anything but I kept things down. Last night, back to hell, threw up my Premier Protein this morning and feel like I am back to square one again, not even water staying down. I deeply regret this surgery!

I am just about 3 1/2 weeks post op from gastric bypass and I am struggling so hard with food cravings. I can’t think of anything besides how great food used to taste. I haven’t been able to act on any of my cravings, but it’s borderline obsession with thinking about food all the time. Any advice?

  19. Started by PEGGO,

Hi, is anyone else always thirsty ? I am 12 weeks post op and keep wanting to drink water with half the glass filled with ice cubes . I’ve read that it can be an Iron deficiency to want to eat ice cubes , but I don’t want to crunch them, I just want them in the drink , or to make ice chippings and eat them. I always want sharp tasting things too. How long do we have to sip our drinks for, and hsve to wait half an hour between eating and drinking ? Or is it an ongoing thing ?

  21. I'm a diabetic for over twenty years with aBMI of just under 31. I'm having a hard time convincing my husband about the benifits of this surgery for this disease. I don't believe my insurance will pay for it but I feel it could save my life. My h1c is over 11. Advice on what to do?

  22. When I began this journey at the beginning of 2018 I was 426 pounds. Can't tell you measurements because all my clothes were in X's and not inches. But for reference, I was in a 5x shirt from Casual Male. I only wore sweatpants and those were also a 5x. People only saw me in clothes and the comment I often heard was that I carried my weight well. Being 6'1" I had the advantage of being tall and heavy vs short and heavy. It was all an illusion. Medically I was prediabetic, on CPAP, could only sleep on my back, had knee pain and sweated like a frog fresh out of the pond in any weather over 72 degrees. 7 months post surgery and I am down 139 pounds. My A1C is 4, of…

Never thought I'd say this but... I am losing too much weight. I lost 7lbs in the past 2 weeks alone. I just bought a shirt in a Size 1. Yes, I know I am in the "healthy BMI range", but with my build, I am starting to look sickly and freakish. I haven't been to the gym in over 3 weeks and have my account suspended until January 1 because I have a herniated disc and then am having skin removal. So, I haven't been burning a ton of calories (purposely). I am having skin removal on November 19th which will surely take off several pounds and make me look even more rail-thin. I guess I could add an additional protein shake in during the day? It's just crazy! When does it end. l…

Does anyone out there post-op have a Medical ID Bracelet? During my pre-op the Bariatric Coordinator thought getting an ID bracelet would be a good idea. She said it can be particarly dangerous if you go to be intubated, lets say if you were in an automobile accident), the emergency responder could go straight through your pouch (putting a hole). She said she has seen it done while working in the ER - a lady's spleen was cut and a hole was put through the pouch. This scared me and actually never dawned on me to have one. She said hers states she is an RNY patient, not to intubate and no Aspirin, No NSAIDS. I'm looking into getting one...I think it is very important…

I'm 4.5 weeks post op rny. I can eat chili and soup etc like it's nothing. 6 to 8 oz. I'm still on soft food for another week. Do you think I'll feel more restriction on regular foods? I don't want to screw this up.

OMG I'm 4 months out since my surgery and within the last 2 weeks I've experienced this twice. NOT a pleasant experience. I'm not sure what I ate the first time, but this time I made homemade blackeye peas, high in protein. My body said NOT TODAY!! I was doubled over, in pain, moaning and groaning. I'm going back on soups for a couple of days. I know others have experienced this, how did you deal with it? Just ride it out and not eat what caused this reaction again?

Long story short, I'm a Lap-band patient (2009) that is going to seek revision to gastric bypass in 2020. I'm really excited and hopeful, but also have a good real of anxiety about making this surgery a success and sticking with it longterm. For a whole host of reasons, the Band isn't a good tool for me and that is why I'm seeking a more drastic surgery. While I still have some time before my new insurance policy kicks in, I want to make sure I'm taking the steps now to make post-surgery life more successful. Because this is not my first rodeo, I know to focus on protein intake and water. I know to limit carbs and sugars, etc. However, I'm curious as to how many of y…

Ok Ya'll, i am just over 2 weeks post op. I ate a bit much last night at dinner, and got sick. Lesson learned. I started having some crazy pains around the tiny tummy area early this morning. I had been going stir crazy in my house so I swept the kitchen, and did a load of dishes. (Husband at work 2 teens at school) I was still feeling ok. I went for a walk. Came in and rested a bit. However everything I eat or drink today is causing my pain and discomfort. Nausea, and some vomiting. I tried to reach my Dr but had to leave vm. Never got a call back. Im really kinda misserable. Feel like everything is sitting in the bottom of my throat. Anyone else ever experience this?…

  34. I'm noticing more young women getting surgery. I'm wondering if anyone else had it in 50 or 60s and how you did?

  35. So I read elsewhere that a lot of people are reporting that they start sneezing when their pouch is full or their eyes/nose start running. That's so weird! Anyone here experience that sort of thing too? I know there's hiccuping and burping, but sneezing seems like such a strangely attached reaction to a full pouch

  36. Hey guys how's everyone from October surgery doing? I'm going well actually 8 days post op besides major pain first few days I'm adjusting to my new life and new stomach which likes to rumble randomly lol Still got my bandages over the incisions I'm just on protein shakes and water and sugar free cordial for now but will be nice to get something with texture soon. Surgeon said minimum 2 weeks liquids then I'll be trying different things like hummus and yoghurt or puree veggies I'm drinking plenty of water and shakes with ease just take my time. one thing I have noticed Is water fills my bladder much quicker going to the toilet often.lol …

I was scheduled for October 30 but have been moved to the first of the year. I have to say I am scared and nervous, but I know it is the best for my health. I am getting the Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass which I hope will give me forever better health. I was wondering if anyone has had good feedback about the vitamin patches.

I got on the scale today and wanted to cry. The scale is up to 196! I know the cause I think..... I have only once made it to 800 calories in a day. I am on the soft diet and in a week I can start my regular diet. I just don't get enough calories in each day. My water is pretty close anywhere from 54 to 62 oz a day. It's frustrating! Thanks for listening!

I have been very depressed since I broke my ankle 2 weeks ago. 6 weeks of no weight on it was a devastating blow. I have been sitting here in a funk binge watching my 600lb life. For the last 2 weeks I just kept thinking OMG I am going to stall sooo bad. My hubby kept encouraging me to get on the scale to keep up with my progress, so today I got past the fear of gain and HOLY CRAP 199 with my splint!! I also bet another goal I finally weigh less than my hubby!! This was the boost I needed today as they took my staples out and confirmed a month more of no weight on my ankle. Thankfully I'm not really capable of snacking or the last 2 weeks would have been h…

Hi everyone! So in July I was revised from the sleeve to the bypass. Fast forward 3 months and starting later this week I've started experiencing pins and needles and slight numbness in my abdomen through my legs on both sides. I got my lab work completed today by my surgeon. Have any of you ever experienced this? Please help. I'm a little on edge over what's going on.

  47. Hey guys hope all is well. I'm just getting nervous and anxious about my surgery coming in 10 days time. I would love to hear from people who had surgery in the last month or so. Can you run down exactly what you went through whilst in hospital? How did you feel in the first few days to weeks.. Where you able to drink much water? Did you feel hungry much? Was the pain bearable? And in the first weeks or months are you still feeling restrictions on how much you can eat or drink in one go? I'm just curious how we're meant to get enough protein if unable to drink much liquids? My surgeon says his directions are 2+2+2 for each phase but…

Hey guys just curious if anybody here understands the science behind the pouch size? I've read the standard pouch in a bypass is like a golf ball very small like 1oz? My surgery said he does more like a mini sleeve thinner pouch 1oz to max 2oz? He said it's safer and easier to heal? Ive read conflicting reports but does the pouch size make a huge difference in the long run? If any veterans or medical people can explain?? Mike.
