Finally, after a long journey and lots of ups and downs, I will be going to have gastric bypass on March 12th. The pre-op OptiFast diet begins on February 26th. We thought I was going to be able to have the surgery in February and that will not happen but March 12th is only a blink in the eye of time. I began the entire affair in September of 2017. Between the doctors appointments and the fight to get my blood sugar, I am tired and elated that the time is almost here. A new beginning ....

I had a revision surgery from sleeve (2012) to gastric bypass Jan 29 2018. I am on a liquid diet until I see my surgeon on the 14th. With the sleeve, I didn’t feel hungry at all after surgery and was barely able to drink. But with this surgery, I am starving!!! It’s such torture cooking for and watching my fiancé and kids eating and not being able to have anything but liquids. It’s been such an emotional battle for me and I find myself literally crying over it. Am I the only one or has anyone else gone through this? Thanks!

I had the sleeve at 19, I was terrified of the bypass because I was nervous about them touching my intestines, but now at 22 after weight gain and awful heartburn that led to stomach ulcers, I will be converting in July. Just looking for anyone who may have converted, what was different post op with the bypass than post op with the sleeve?

I’m halfway through the process and I hope to have surgery in May. As of now I have quit smoking, am trying to stop Diet Coke and am now on a 1600cal diet (surgeon required). The calorie reduction is new. I lost 15 the first 3 months and they want me to drop another 15. I’ve had to stop using my “crutches” and it just has me in a weird place. This week is really bad. I know it’s for the ultimate good and I’ll be better off in the long run but right now it makes me wonder if I can really do this. And of course my therapist is on vacation. I’m sure others have gone through this. Any tips?

I am now approximately 25 years post-gastric bypass surgery, and even though I was a "pioneer" back in 1994 when I had the surgery done in Birmingham, AL, AND I almost died because of a "leak" that created a huge infection inside my body that led me to a 3 week stay in ICU, I WOULD DO IT ALL AGAIN!. Losing 170 pounds was the best thing that ever happened to me. I have read comments from some about "missing" their comfort food. Well, if you had rather have comfort food than be thin, then I would suggest you NOT have the surgery. However, I can assure you that you will be so excited seeing the weight drop off your body that your "comfort food" will not even be a fle…

Now that I've lost a good deal of weight I have the inevitable skin folds that come along with it... My main issue right now is with my lower tummy/overhang. It's really not that bad and doesn't cause issues normally but lately I have been having some problems with irritation and rashes. I've mainly been just keeping it super clean and dry all the time and using gold bond powder when it seems to be getting extra irritated. Is there something else people have had success with that I should be trying? It's not looking like skin surgery is in the cards any time soon so I need to come up with something to cope for now.

I read so many horror stories before surgery. So far, my story is a good one. I am completely pain free and I haven't had many problems. I have lost about 15lbs. I figure that is pretty good for not being active. I have been pretty tired and I have no energy. I am told this gets better after week three. For once in my life, I am not hungry all the time. I still get some cravings but I just practice stopping the thoughts and that helps. I am looking forward to eating soft foods next week. I am also looking forward to more weight loss and to start seeing my clothes get to big. Sent from my SM-G930V using BariatricPal mobile app

Starting my liquid diet today and having RNY surgery on February 20th. I’m so excited! Has anyone come into any road blocks this close? I’ve had a few with the pulmonary department so I don’t wanna get ahead of myself. I wasn’t that consistent with my vitamins.. any advice?

I got the word yesterday, my insurance approved me for RNY! Yay! Question for the masses. Is it too lofty a goal to plan to return to work 2 weeks post op? I’m a nurse who doesn’t do a lot of physical work.

It's been six months since my bypass and here's where I'm at: 130 lbs lost (90 since surgery) 60 inches overall I feel close to normal, though eating is still a bit of a negotiation. I took my first long trip and the difference was amazing: no seat extender needed on the plane, much less leg swelling, able to walk around more easily. AND I was able to eat out for almost every meal! I bought stuff for breakfast and snacks to keep in my room--mostly high protein stuff like yogurt and edamame and protein drinks--and then I just ordered whatever I wanted at restaurants, knowing that I might only eat a few bites. I took some back to the hotel for later, but most…

Why did no one tell me about the trapped gas? Oh my God, it hurt. So. BAD. They had to give me Dilaudid to mask the pain just so I could sleep. Went home yesterday and mostly slept the rest of the day and through the night. The trapped gas is gone but I somehow managed to pull a muscle in both forearms, which has been extremely pianful. Luckily the right arm is mostly feeling better, the left still has a way to go. Managing to get in my water and protein shakes which is good, yesterday it was a little tough but today has been no issue.

I'm nearing my 6-month mark and have only had one very brief stall around month 3, I think. Currently, I haven't lost anything in almost 3 weeks and it's so incredibly discouraging. I know its normal... and I really did expect it to happen. I'm just really bummed and stressing out about it because I just keep thinking I'm screwing it all up somehow. I eat pretty well and exercise 5 days a week... HOW IS IT POSSIBLE TO NOT BE LOSING WEIGHT?! I feel like even without the surgery I'd be losing weight right now. Very frustrating. Thanks for reading my rant. I Just needed to vent to people who know what this is like.

I finally got my surgery date Feb 20th! After almost a year and a half of appointments and dedication. As excited as I am, I'm terrified as well. Is this just going to be another something i fail at? I'm reading some of the post op forums and 3 months out some have only lost 6-10lbs. questioning if this is even worth it? I gained and lost weight all my life, already at 31 have the skin to prove it. Guess I'm looking for those words of encouragement.

I had bypass 10/30. Within the last month, I've had issues eating and severe pain and vomiting. Had a scope and I have 2 very large ulcers at the stricture. Trying to treat with 2 different meds, but still vomiting. Also, I'm hitting up to two week stalls on weight loss. This has been such a frustrating process for me. Since surgery 3 months ago, I don't know that I've had a day where I have felt good. My stats are good, on the right road, but frustrated at throwing up and feeling crappy. Anyone having similiar issues? Sent from my SM-J327P using BariatricPal mobile app

I’m 12 months post gastric bypass and am now at target weight. I exercise loads so am eating around 2000 calories a day to maintain weight. I tend to eat lots in the evening as I’m hungry post exercise but am waking through the night around 3 hours after my last food with hot flushes which have been diagnosed as late dumping syndrome. I’m not eating high sugar so am confused as to why this is happening. Has anyone else experienced this and if so have you managed to solve it? Thanks

Anyone else dealing with ulcers? I am 5 weeks out and started having problems with food right after i was advanced to food that can be cut with fork. Had an EGD today and my poor little pouch is a big ol ulcer. So i am back to liquid diet for a week and 2 new ulcer meds. I have been on the struggle bus since day one and I am starting to get depressed with each set back. I know i am not getting enough protein. Some days, i just struggle with water. I need help. Not sure what to do...i just know i want to be back to normal and not have all this pain and extreme fatigue.

I have just hit 3 months post-op. Yes I'm still losing weight but I feel like it's still a very slow process. I don't understand why sometimes I eat one or two bites and I'm so full and other times I feel like I don't get full even after eating almost a cup of food. Lots of new changes just happened to start at the time of my operation. My son started acting out at school, I had my oldest move back in with her significant other and the baby. They've been in the doctor's office so many times. I lost my father-in-law to cancer. I also started a full-time job sitting all day in a field like I've never done before so my stress of those little higher from that as well. Holy s*…

Today. At work, eating lunch (ricotta gnocchi in tomato sauce - leftovers, frozen, eating for third time without problem previously) when I got a quick-onset tummy ache. Sharp pain, bloated - gas, I thought. Probably from cabbage Pad Thai the night before - my first try at cabbage and maybe my last for a while! Went home and it was more and more uncomfortable. Couldn’t burp (is that a US word? Belch? Eructate?) or fart (I KNOW you all know what that is!) Eventually, tried the old baking soda/lemon juice/water trick, and gone like magic. But as I stood, double over willing myself to pass gas from anywhere at all, and I pondered whether to do de-gas pills or …

Okay, I had been down to 280, goal of 220. Due to some very depressing life situations as well as a stint in jail and then a move and.....basically, I was failing hard. I haven't even done the blood work in nearly a decade, and I was eating so unhealthy and not taking vitamins, I know I was doomed to fall apart. However, this past Wednesday (Jan 24, 2018) I bought a scale (rated to go up to 440), afraid I had gone back up to my 445 pounds after ten years and doing stupid stuff and stretching my stomach. I bought vitamins (yes bariatric vitamins). I even started going back to as purely a protein diet as possible (Yogurt, eggs, chicken, and loads of sugar free pop…

Had gastric bypass Wednesday morning. I came home today (Friday) from hospital. I'm second guessing my choice now and have been in tears. I am still having so much pain and Tylenol isn't touching it. I'm miserable from pain and no sleep. I can't eat bc broth is about the only thing allowed and it just makes me nauseas to put down. I'm scared to eat in the upcoming weeks bc I don't want to throw up. I know it sounds stupid but this whole thing quickly turned into a nightmare for me. Anyone else had similar thoughts?

I had my 6-week post op check today - all going well, surgeon is about as pleased as I am! I thought some of you might be interested - seems his approach to eating now is more relaxed than for some of you guys in the US. His reckoning - I should work my way from 1/2 or so cup of food per meal, up to 1 cup or a bit under over next 6 weeks, strictly 3 meals a day forever. I need no longer worry about “protein first” in each meal - a good mixed balanced meal is more important now. If anything, eat well-chewed veggies first so I get in enough, then protein as it tends to not pass through as easily (my pouch is a “fobi pouch” with a silastic ring permanently set in the …

I'm not going for surgery until October but I'm a little concerned about post-op complications. Specifically, a leak. I'll be going it completely alone so I really would like to know what to expect. My surgeon says they don't do the swallow test but that they'll know if there's a leak (I think they scan after surgery). Has anyone had leaks? What were the signs?

Hi forum... I am 13 years out from RNY and I am back into the cycle of insulin resistance and reactive hypo ... anyone else struggling with this? It all started about 7 years ago when I became allergic to wheat and had to switch to a rice based diet cause of my allergy... my body just pushes too much insulin out when I eat carbs... and rice really make a me spike... then crash and burn. Would love to hear from others who have struggled with this due to PCOS... that is what started he whole cycle for me. MaryJo RNY on 8/2/04 290/130/215 current

So I have finally managed to catch up on all the laundry and housework that accumulated during/following my surgery. Every day I get the kids ready for school, pack their lunches, do their homework with them. I've cooked the rest of the week's dinners and frozen them in portions for everyone in the house except me cos I still can only have liquids. I have confirmed my start date for my new job, handed my notice into the old job. Arranged to view 6 houses to be closer to the new place. As I sit here, I'm just wondering what on earth my husband is doing. I feel like a maid! Is sharing chores too much to ask! I work full time and he's currently unemployed. How is this fair??…

I'm very frustrated. I'm 2 months post-op and have only lost 6lbs!!! I'm eating very little, walking a minimum of 8 miles a week, and not losing weight like I had hoped. I lost 17lbs on the 2 week pre-op diet, so I'm going to go back on the liquid diet hoping that will start the weight loss but I'm so disappointed with the results of this surgery I could cry. I know that any weight loss is good, but I was hoping for more than a 1% loss per month!!! I don't understand why I'm not losing more. It isn't the whole "muscle weighs more than fat" phenom either. I look no different. You'd never know I even had the surgery except that I'm taking loads of vitamins and have scars on…
