I got the word yesterday, my insurance approved me for RNY!

Question for the masses. Is it too lofty a goal to plan to return to work 2 weeks post op? I’m a nurse who doesn’t do a lot of physical work.

I think that’s pretty quick for bypass. I’m a floor nurse. My company approved me for seven weeks short term disability. My surgeon cleared me to return to work after 5 weeks on weight restriction but Human Resources did not accommodate that so I ended up with the full time off.

I am ready to go back. I’m sure they didn’t want to deal with me being injured at work after surgery.

Even though it’s laparoscopic you have internal sutures that need healing.

Whatever you decide, good luck....but don’t push it and risk injury!

I returned to work after 2 weeks. The third week I was very tired and left work around 4pm. Week four I was back to normal energy. After 5 weeks I was back to full on exercising at Crossfit.

I guess I should say the way I’ve planned it is 2 weeks off, work one day then another week off. That’s how my schedule falls.

I can't imagine going back to work after two weeks. Take as long as you can. Post RNY is not pleasant.

I went back at 2 1/2 weeks. Wish I had come back 1/2 day for the rest of that first week back. I was exhausted by 1. Good luck!

My surgeon told me 2 weeks because I have a desk job. He did say doing 1/2 days the first week back would be good idea.

I am a nurse who has a desk job at home. As any kind of nurss we ignore ourselves with meal breaks and drinking. My surgeon says if you can take off the whole time they would like, mine is 6 weeks then you should. If you have to go back early, I would want to go back half days or part time due to all the stress from the job and still being able to take care of your postop needs.

I have a desk job and originally was approved to be off 6 weeks. I was fairly bored after 2 weeks and ready to get back into a 'normal' routine so I went back early after around 3 weeks. I was very tired mentally the first week or so and ended up working shorter than normal days. I physically felt fine but the mental drain from surgery on top of the new routine of trying to get in water, vitamins, and food was a lot. I think it's different for everyone and I was very thankful to have a flexible job where I could come back partial days or head home early on days when I was extra tired. Sounds like you do have an option to go back for a day and then have more time off so that might work out well.
