Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements

Questions about protein and vitamins before and after weight loss surgery. Products, dosages, timing, and what fits your routine.

Sponsored by the BariatricPal Store: a full year of bariatric multivitamins for $99.

  1. So, as someone who has been told I need to consume 85 g of protein after the surgery, hitting that number is tough. But, when I saw that Amazon was selling boxes of Clif bars that have 20 g of protein per serving, I knew I had to give it a go (couldn't be worse than protein shakes, right?). So, tonight while I was at the grocery store, I bought one of the chocolate flavoured protein bars, one of the chocolate peanut butter protein bars and a box (because they weren't selling them in singles) of Chocolate Mint protein bars. Tonight, I tried the chocolate protein bars and I'll say... it's edible...ish. I mean, I could choke it down but I'm literally counting the second…

I had sleeve 7-29-17 (lapband removal 12-16) I am still struggling with Protein. I cannot seem to find a protein shake that I can tolerate. The after taste is what gets me. I have lost from 197 to 155 is that normal progress? If I could find protein would that help? Also what does everyone do for Hair loss? My dr said over the counter vitamins are better than no vitamins at all. I am taking One A Day Petites (2) and Biotin that dissolve (10,000) Thanks for any info you can send.

  3. Started by Tessa1988,

I am 6 days post-op and I am struggling BIG TIME. My doc wants me getting 60g of Protein every day and a total of 64oz of liquid every day. I've slowly been better with Water, Gatorade, but still no where near the 64oz. My main concern though is protein. Any type of Protein Drink I can't keep down (i throw it up). I've tried different kinds of premade shakes, Isopure ready to drink, protein water. One sip of any of those and I feel SO sick. The only thing I've found that I keep down that contains protein is a small amount of skim milk or kefir. What can i do?!?!

You know that time you paid good money for that one product that boast "delicious flavor" whilst offering high amounts of protein and nutrition.....only to take one bite or sip and gag on the flavor, texture, or viscosity? Let's face it-- a VAST majority of "bariatric protein drinks", high protein "keto foods", or "bariatric vitamin supplements" taste like . SOOOO..... in an effort to help each other save time and money, please post the products you have tried and what you would rate them. Either a: or . Adding pics of the products would be very helpful. I'll start by posting a few products I've tried in the comments.

Hi! I'm just getting started met with the surgeon last week and have 30lbs to lose. They recommended that I start on protein shakes soon but there's so many options it's overwhelming and I'm very picky when it comes to taste. I use to be a big pop drinker so it's gonna be an adjustment. What protein powders or shakes do you recommend that taste the best and where do u get them?

  9. Started by Chubarella,

I just bought some strawberry Unjury and tried it with water....it was soo gross! I can still taste it! Is there anything else I can mix with it? I can't use dairy or veggies since I'm getting a colonoscopy at the end of the month. How else can I get this down?

hi everybody, I'm pre op and had my labs done and I am extremely anemic. My doctor prescribed 2 iron pills(chewable), 1 in the morning and 1 at night. They are causing major stomach issues, cramps and nausea. Any suggestions to stop these awful stomach issues? Sent from my SM-S907VL using BariatricPal mobile app

  12. They sent me chewables by mistake and They can't take them back. Completely sealed bottles. My insurance covers them so I only pay $20 a month for all 3 - I just want to recoup my co pays. Multivitamin, iron and calcium. They are not bad tasting compared to other ones I've tried, I just don't need chewable anymore.

hi all I'm new her, so please bare with me. im 43 an obese with a fatty liver, my doc keeps telling me I need to loose weight an stop with the red meat an ice coffees. I understand her concerns, but I don't think she completely understand that I can't sweat as I has a rare condition called aquagenic uriticia puritus, meaning I'm allergic to sweat an water. But what I'm really wondering is would glucinda help me loose weight if I use it as a breakfast an lunch? Then do the salad an veggies for dinner. Everyone keeps saying it's the milk doing the damage? Is this true? Please help

  15. I'm just getting started and my team suggested I should start taking vitamins now but I'm afraid of buying them and disliking the taste. Its all I could do in the past to chew a tum no matter the flavor as the texture was like chalk. Is that what the chewables are like too? What's your favorite? Or should I try liquid and what options are there. So much out there I feel overwhelmed.

  16. Post sleeve, just had the strangest reaction to these Vitamins. Within 2 minutes, sweats, diarrhea and the urge to vomit. I sipped Water to help move it on through, hoping to avoid vomiting. Anyone else had an experience with this particular Vitamin brand? I'm wondering if this happened because I took them on an empty stomach?

I am completely confused. I received so many information (some discordant) about vitamins that I don't know what to do. I have been told from the department of surgery to start with the vitamins. I received gastric bypass on 9/5 and in this moment I am not allowed to swallow big pills and I do not tolerate the powdered vitamins (8-10 oz twice a day it's a lot of room in my new small stomach). -What should I take? I mean to be fully covered? -Where do I go to buy them (I need them ASAP, so no online order)? -which is the easiest regimen to follow at my stage (phase II, puree)? Thanks for the help

I'm still struggling to meet my protein goals post-surgery -- the Premier Protein shakes I used to enjoy now make me nauseated. Too sweet! I ordered some Unjury unflavored protein after reading several recommendations. Tried it mixed in some food and it was... okay. Didn't care for what it did to the texture of my food. Then I saw on the back of the container that they recommended mixing a scoop with skim milk. I thought "great!" - I love drinking skim milk, and if this is unflavored, it should solve my problems. Right? Right? WRONG. It tastes like a yeasty cheese milk smoothie. Ugh. Back to the drawing board.

I went to the vitamin shop today and purchased Quest 32 oz container of plain protein powder mix. After I got home, I open the container and noticed that there was only half of protein power in the jar. The canister says serving size 32 scoops, but I discovered only 24 scoops. I called the VS and they said they will refund my money for the product. I will call the company tomorrow to see what the problem is. This stuff is too expensive to be short changed. Has anyone else had this experience?

  20. My vitamin prescription is SUPER expensive to fill. They want like $389 for the vitamin B nasal spray, but then they throw in the chewable multi vitamin and the chewable calcium. What a deal huh! Lol. But it's super expensive and I just can't afford it. Even with my insurance and the coupon it still is $289. Any suggestions? Hi all. Today makes 14 days post op sleeve surgery for me. I've been drinking the premade muscle milks and haven't had any problem with taste or keeping them down. That said, I'm trying to find a no sugar, no or low carb powder. Isopure was recommended to me by my doctor. So far I've tried the strawberry cream and the vanilla and both taste disgusting to me. I'm getting very bad stomach aches from it. I've also tried ISO 100, and I'm having the same reaction. Any recommendations. Thanks in advance

I bought whey protein powder and thought it would be a good idea to put it in my cup of morning coffee, however, it alters the flavor, even after adding creamer. The weird thing is it says it's unflavored. What are some of best items food/drink to put this protein powder in? If you have a suggestion for a better protein powder to buy as well it would be appreciated.

Anyone have any recommendations for unflavored protein powders for post-op? I plan on mixing it with the Crystal Light, pudding, yogurt, applesauce etc after surgery to supplement the shakes if I'm not getting enough in. I understand it should not be the primary source of protein but I'm looking for something in between shakes.

It seems pricey for such a small bag. Does anyone here drink it? Is it worth the money? And their 3+3 vitamins? I never could find a Protein I liked with my lapband so I didn't drink it and suffered the results with my hair. Wanting to improve with my sleeve so it helps my hair. 40. I am working my way through something nearly disastrous. There is a reason I am posting this for WLS patients Cipro, Levaquin, are known a fluoroquinolones. These are not "typical" antibiotics and are used for more serious bacterial infections. I had a suspected UTI, and the emergency room gave me Cipro, and I had taken it before so I was not alarmed. Taken before surgery successfully with no problems except some stomach upset. The pharmacist gave me a big speech about the sun, and nothing else I remembered. That's not the speech they should give. On day 3 my urologist went nuts and said stop taking Cipro immediately. I had taken it for 72 hours and seemed fine,…

I'm 6 days post op with the sleeve. Started my multivitamin today....Bariatric Advantage chewable. Less than 10 minutes after taking, I started vomiting. Feel a little better now but still nauseous. hoping this is just due to taking on on empty stomach. Will try tomorrow after taking a protein shake. Problem due to empty stomach? Find a new vitamin? Any thoughts?

  44. I'm doing some shopping on amazon for some supplies for my post-op life. One concern I have is that when I'm at work (desk job), how do I keep my Protein drink cold enough that I will enjoy it? I'm not good with lukewarm stuff or things when they don't stay cold, so ideally, I'd like to find something that keeps my drink super cold for at least 4 hours. I've been told post-op that I will have to have some(1oz.) of my Protein Drink or other liquid every 15 minutes. It's not feasible for me to jump up at my work every 15 minutes to go to the common refrigerator. What have you found that keeps your drinks super cold?
