Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums

Gastric sleeve (VSG) support. Ask about the procedure, the sleeve diet, weight loss results, recovery, and complications.

  1. Started by Annette P,

I am signing up for the gastric sleeve surgery. Mixed emotions, but hoping that this will really give me back the energy level and enjoyment in life again that i have lost in the last many years. My sign up date is Sept. 28th. I know it is going to be a long process but Im looking forward to the knowledge and support that comes with the process. Has anyone experienced friends and others saying alot of negative things about the surgery and how bad it is going to be afterward. I mean I know there is risks and all, but some keep telling me its not a quick fix and all of the horrible things they know others have had, or had themselves. Is this normal for others to …

surgery 6/24. I've been dealing with it. I still can't tolerate water I've tried crystal light and all.

  3. I'm religiously sticking to my post-op diet (liquids only until 9/2) but today was tough - really tough. I'm starting to get "phantom" tastes in my mouth (all day today I "tasted" grilled burgers) and I'm starting to crave solid food badly. Not a lot of it - I'm really not hungry - just enough to quash this urge. Not even junk food...I was DYING for a slice of red bell pepper earlier. For lunch, I had my 1/2 cup of low-fat cream of chicken soup...went down without issue and even had really small pieces of chicken in it (which I chewed diligently). Tell me this too, passes? Do I REALLY need to wait until 10/2 before eating anything solid? Obviously, I'm not ready to slam…

  4. I am 6 weeks post op and eating solid food now. Do you think it’s okay to eat these since they are high protein and low carb? Curious to know everyone’s thoughts?

Hi I’m dest I am 22 years old my height is 5’4 and weight 220 I’m in California and I have insurance it’s anthem blue cross ppo I don’t know if they would cover a gastric sleeve or if I would even qualify, am I suppose to call the number on my card to get these answers? Unfortunately I have not seen a doctor yet I’m new to all of this, I’ve been thinking I can always go to TJ for the surgery but if my insurance can cover it here then why not? I’ve also been looking for someone built like me weight and height Wise if you have done the sleeve how are your results? Or if you have gone through your own insurance how much did you have to end up paying for your co pay? Ah so ma…

I'm in tears. What went wrong? I know many people who have done this and not one who has experienced what I am experiencing which is NO WEIGHT LOSS. Im devastated. I was so afraid of getting too small it never occurred to me that I could be here with no real weight loss. Did it fail? I'm not overeating, I'm counting calories to stay around 1200 or less. Heartbroken.

  8. G'day, all. I'm almost 6 weeks out, and the weight loss is going very well. I'm down 29# and about 2 sizes. My 18yo daughter is so excited for me, and so is my husband! She points out changes in my body, from "I can fit my arms around you to hug all of you now!" to "Your knees look different!" I am so blessed to have them behind me in this journey. Just a few negatives right now -- I still have to have a BIG nap (2+ hours) almost every day. I hope that improves soon. Also, just today, I'm having some nausea. I decided to go back to pureed food for a day to see if that helps, and it does a little bit. I'd love to hear from anyone else who …

gaaa! this is a hard week. i am hungry. doesnt feel like head hunger, i feel it in my stomach. I want to eat more than my puny 4 teaspoons of food for dinner. is this a phase common to this time out (6 weeks) or am i just having issues?

  10. Later this week It will be three years since my sleeve surgery and this is what I've learned. The surgery gave me hope and a jump start to rapid weight loss and better health. That's it. Nothing magical to it, you lose a good portion of your stomach therefore you eat less and you lose weight. I learned that without any work on my part the weight came off rapidly and in eight months I was at my goal weight. Now, here is the most important lesson out of this whole process, ( need to capitalize this) THE HARD WORK IS MAINTAINING THE WEIGHT LOSS. Since April of 2018 I have been struggling daily to maintain that weight loss and to stay at my goal weight. For those of you who h…

OMG please help! I had a VSG 18 months ago and successfully lost about 80lbs. When the pandemic hit my anxiety went through the roof and I have gained back 30lbs. I still feel full after small servings but it’s SUGAR that is doing me in. Oddly I can easily eat a pint of ice cream in a sitting but cannot eat more than half a serving of “regular food”. Have I killed my sleeve? Do I need a second surgery. I’m so embarrassed to call my surgeon.

So the first time I ate a little bit of crab meat it was all I could do swallow a couple of bites now here I am at week 4 and I ate one and a half crab cakes and they went down just fine is. I'm concerned that I was able to eat that much other than the fact that I shouldn't have shoved all this food down my gullet. have I done permanent damage? Why in the world was I so hungry? Or was it may be emotional eating now after I have eaten it I'm starting to feel kind of sick to my stomach but it went in just fine I'd appreciate your thoughts

I'm having a really hard time getting any fluids in. Over the past month I was getting in maybe 8-12 ounces of water/fluids on a good day, so I obviously got very dehydrated, which subsequently made me nauseated, leading to less fluid intake, ad infinitum. I've really felt like garbage and have had no energy. I had a visit with the NP last week and she ordered IV fluids, so I got two liters a day for four days (Friday-Monday). I gained six pounds over the weekend just from IV fluids, and I definitely felt better, but I'm still not able to get fluids in so she wants me to get a PICC line and get IV fluids for at least the next week until I'm able to start increasing my…

I'm confused on making protein shakes. I thought it was pretty darn simple- liquid, powder, blend. But I'm getting a ton of foam & all flavors taste disgusting all airy like that. I made a drink with water, flavored water powder, & unflavored protein for lunch. I couldn't handle the taste right away but now I'm seeing that the foam reduces the longer in sits in the fridge so I'll be trying it again soon. Can y'all please tell me the different methods you use so I can get some ideas? Thank you!

Had my sleeve done November of 2019... so far I’m down 60 lbs.. I feel discouraged and also feel like I haven’t lost anything.. I know I have, but mentally I’m not there yet... anyone else have issues ? Or is it just me ?

  16. Started by RainbowBrite57,

Today I start my 2 week pre-op diet! I’m super lucky in that I get to have 1 serving of fruit at lunch & a small high protein/low carb meal for dinner along with 3 shakes a day. I know 14 days will come quick but right now it seems a million years away!

  17. Started by RainbowBrite57,

When I add protein powder to my water & shake it, I get a lot of foam. Do I have to drink the foam too to get in all the protein the drink is supposed to supply? This feels like a really silly question!

I do not feel nearly as full as I thought I would, even with soft or non-liquid foods. That said, I'm reading quite a bit that sleeve patients seem to have the "full" sensation more than roux en y patients. Jealous. I've found the way to combat this is to measure my food, because I don't have that solid "full" feeling even with the chewing, water restrictions, and slow eating. I assume this is because it's getting pushed out quickly. Legit? Do you sleeve patients find you feel fuller, quicker, in comparison to bypass patients?

I am 3 weeks out from a gastric sleeve procedure. I'm not sure if I am eating too much. It seems to me that most folks who have the sleeve done are unable to eat as much as I do. I don't strive to eat a lot, but I just happens and I never feel full. I have not felt full - not once. Last night I had a pretty good sized veggie burger and about 10 stalks of asparagus. I would have hoped to be full after about half of that. How does this seem to you folks who have had gastric sleeve? Many thanks Grace

I'm six days post-op and I think I finally turned a corner. While the pain from the "big" incision still hurts pretty bad, it has become tolerable. The gas/bloating seems to be subsiding, and the cramping I had after swallowing seems to be going away (though not completely - it's just not as bad and less frequent, but still super painful when it does happen). I also haven't had a normal BM, but I have been "productive", which I guess is better than what I've read some of you have gone thru. In other words, no constipation! So, I guess my question now is, when does this damn weight start disappearing??? LOL!!! I'm still having a bit of trouble getting all my fluids in …

I’m 4 days post-op (VSG) and starting to somewhat feel better. I’m able to get around better although the big incision still really hurts. My biggest concerns right now are: pain/cramping after swallowing. It’s not the actual swallowing that hurts, it’s when the Fluid hits my pouch. Doesn’t matter if the liquid is cold or warm - but it hurts like hell every single time for about 2-4 seconds. When will this subside? Secondly, my whole abdominal area is still REALLY swollen & hard - I look like I’m 6 months pregnant. It’s been like this since the surgery and hasn’t gone down at all. Lastly, I haven’t had a “real” bowel movement yet. I had very gassy diarrhea twice on…

Hi, I'm about a month and a week out from surgery. Two weeks ago I started alot of cramping and nausea. After that I began vomiting everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. I don't each or drink much so I have no energy especially w the vomiting. Got a gi series done Wednesday and it said I was healing fine. No hernia, leaks, or anything. Could I be low in something? I had bloodwork done Friday but wont know anything until Monday. Anybody else experience this? I swear I have been miserable since having my sleeve done.

Hello everyone. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyriodism in 8/2019. After realizing this, I started the process to get approved for VSG and was approved for a 8/2020 surgery date. I then pushed my surgery date back to 12/2020 because I am so afraid of the unknown. I am 5 ft 9 inches tall and I weigh 269 lbs currently. I have always been super athletic and my calves and thighs are huge and are very muscular. I have a three year old daughter and lost 22 lbs during my pregnancy just so that I could deliver with my OB vs being considered high risk and having to transfer to the hospital where I worked in high risk OB. My highest weight has been 275 lbs. Please someo…

I am 2 years post op and I have some very unusual symptoms after I eat. My nose runs, I get sinus congestion and I sneeze. Am I totally alone or can anyone explain this to me?

  28. Currently awaiting approval through insurance for VSG. As I get closer, I get more nervous. This will be my first surgery and first time going under the gas being put out. Other than that, I am just trying to gain additional insight on how to prepare and what is popular post op such as vitamins and getting in those grams of protein immediately after surgery.

Im schedule for surgery oct 14 but I am torn between having my sleeve as schedule or talking to my surgeon about switching to bypass... I have been researching and their is a chance that after 2 years with the sleeve I can gain some weight back and since im going thru this process and have been working so hard I might as well go all in (thats my train of though) I would love to hear what are your thoughts maybe you got one and now looking back you would have gotten the other one. Thank you in advance

  30. Is this normal? I had an amazing weightloss for the first week or two. I'm still on liquids, starting mush tomorrow. I'm stuck at 279lb for over a week. I dont get it. This is my worst nightmare. I've given up all the foods I love and I'm just stalled here and im still massively overweight. Has anyone had this?

I had my surgery on july 13th. My period was supposed to be the following week. I had a bit of spotting but nothing big. I chalked it up to stress. Now its been over a month and my period was due, I spotted even less than before, and it disappeared. I am freaking out, i did this so i could be healthy again, healthy enough to go through IVF. has anyone stopped menstruating after bariatric surgery. (btw, i have lost 39lb)

I'm currently in the puree stage and about 2.5 weeks post op. Can I ask how often you guys at the same stage are eating? When I eat, I feel full after about 1oz and assume that's my body's way of telling me to stop. I feel like I'm waaaay undereating though.

WTH? How can this be? Day of surgery I was 223.2. This morning I’m 232! I’ve had nothing to eat or drink except sips of water & meds. I don’t get it! Please tell me there’s some crazy reason for this that I wasn’t told about and that it’ll drop quickly!!!! I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw those numbers. Been walking quite a bit too! ?

So, I did it! Barely spent 24 hours in the hospital from the time of surgery until I was back home. Managed to do two laps around the hospital floor yesterday & last night and haven’t had any nausea. That said, I’m in a WORLD OF PAIN! The largest incision feels like it’s ripping apart every time I move. My insides feel the same. I have ZERO appetite and have more or less been forcing myself to sip Water, but I know I’m not getting enough (it hurts when it it’s the sleeve). How long until I start to feel some sense of normalcy???

Why is straws a bad thing. I can't drink anything from a cup even if I try to sip slowly it goes down in big gulp an hurt my stomach. When I use the straw it feels better. So why are straws band again?

Hey guys, so I don't have my surgery yet, I'm still in the 6 month visit phase. Currently, I suffer from a bit of heartburn now and then. I would say once a week maximum, and usually gets relief if I take 1 tablet of Tums. Do you think this is a sign that I should NOT go for sleeve and choose RNY instead? What is your input? I ask because I want to hear actual patient input on their experience with GERD and the VSG. Thank You!

My dietician told me that any vitamins I take post-op need to be chewable for maximum absorption, but what about regular medications? Don't they work the same way? Absorbed into the bloodstream via the stomach? I'm just wondering about post-op pain meds, my regular daily medications, etc. (which also usually require a decent swig of water ?).

Hello all, So I am currently 20 months and weigh 155.4 lbs, and my goal weight is 135lbs. Since August, I have been rocking in the 150s, I usually would be at 153 or 154, but since I had two cheat days, I've been up to 155, 156, or even 157. My biggest fear is that I would reach 160 again. I feel like entering the 160's would mean that I would have failed. So recently, to get try and jump-start the weight loss, I have recently gone back to the gym. I usually do the elliptical for 30mins each day. For my food that has not changed, I still do low carb and make sure I have at least 90 grams if not higher of protein. My water intake is the same. Any advice or tips woul…

Surgery is Wednesday and it's really starting to hit home. My anxiety is thru the roof. I'm not making excuses to jump ship, but I am starting to second guess myself. My husband said he'd be supportive no matter what but doesn't really have an opinion on whether I go thru with it or not - he honestly doesn't care one way or the other. I haven't told my mom about it because she would have a meltdown (she doesn't think I need this surgery and is very much against it). I'm worried about the recovery (pain, discomfort, hair loss, depression, etc.). All my pre-op bloodwork came back textbook perfect, so I'm extremely healthy aside from about 80 extra pounds. At my pre-op cl…

I’m 11 months post op. I’ve lost about 80 pounds since surgery. I currently weight 167-169, at 5’8. I have been going up and down a couple of pounds for the past month or so. No matter what I do I can’t get lower. I’m scared that this is it. Has anybody experienced this at this stage? Hoping it’s just a plateau and not the end of the loosing game for me.

I know there are (or can be) immediate post-op problems with gas/bloating, but in the long run, does VSG help with bloating/IBS issues? I've had a sensitive stomach for years and even now, being on a raw veggie, protein drink & water diet for the last two weeks, I'm super bloated, gassy, and have pretty bad GI issues. Ugh... Wondering if this surgery is going to finally help resolve some of these things.

However my weight has been stuck on the same number for a few days now and I was scared I might have done something wrong. I had ESG on June 19th. So far (8 weeks post op) I have lost 25 pounds and I'm half way to my goal of 140 pounds. Average loss the last 4 weeks has been 2.2 pounds a week. I've been able to stick to my meal plan pretty well by consuming less than 650 calories a day and getting in my requirements. I have tried to keep carbs to less than 40 grams per day. I have just started the regular diet phase. The last several days I have felt hungrier and I'm feeling deprived by the lack of variety. I am thinking about increasing my calorie intake to about 800 on a few days each week by increasing carbs. I guess keto for life isn't for me. Is this a bad idea? Any suggestions w…

Let's face it, this surgery requires a whole new lifestyle. I'm kind of feeling isolated. When everyone around me is eating and drinking, and having fun I feel left out. Drinking with friends was a big part of my life. Get togethers always centered around lots of food and drink. Now, even when I cook a nice dinner for my family, I can have a bite or two, while everyone else is enjoying platefuls of food. I didn't expect to feel this way. I guess I thought of …
