Hi to everyone! I am unable to go to a site that has a section for VSG because my computer freezes every time I try to open up a post that someone left. And I know of a site that has no one that comes there. I just found this site with people who have VSG and it seems like I may be able to get some information and support here. I hope it is ok that I am here. I know this is a site mostly for lapband people, but I am hoping I can get some support from those with VSG. I have the lapband but it is not working for me at all. I read some talk about the Gastric Sleeve on another board and became very curious so I did some research. I bring it up cause with the potential erosion with any band this is a very possible alternative for me. The Gastric Sleeve is not a sleeve/tube or a devise, but a type of stomach reducing surgery. A precursor to the DS. In the DS (Duodenal Switch) the stomach is reduce to the size and shape of about a small banana, then part of the intestines are reroute. With the Gastric Sleeve the stomach is reduced to the same shape and size as the DS but no intestines are rerouted, but if the sleeve/stomach becomes enlarged or weight-loss subsides a second surgery can be …

I am self pay and of course been searching ways to save money. I had made a decision to have it at this one place here in Houston, for 12,900. Well today I was approached by someone pitching me the gastric sleeve, and how much better it was than lap band. I know this procedure is newer than lap band, but that doesn't mean it is better. She was mainly telling the bad things about lap band like erosion and such. Has anyone else checked into the sleeve? Is there somewhere I can review pro's and con's of both surgeries? I have 50 pounds to lose and a low BMI so I was surprised when I went to my psychologist appt last week and she asked me why I was doing the band and not the sleeve since it was "less restrictive". My doctor's bariatric coordinator said that first of all a sleeve is usually not done on someone unless more weight to lose and you have to stay overnight at hospital and it is of course irreversible so not sure why she would tell me that - my belief is that a psychologist should not give medical advice that is different than my doctor so now I am confused about which to get? I received a letter from my insurance and a call from my Doctor's Office that I have been approved for weight loss surgery. However, I would rather have a sleeve that a lapband. Hello to all you brave souls , My family doctor recommended Lap Band. Through research, visiting this forum, and finding the right surgeon I thought I was on my way. At the private seminar preparing me for surgery, they discussed the three options this surgeon completes. Please help! I went to the dr. today to set up lap band procedure. I need to loose about 80-90 pounds. Since I am self-pay he suggested the gastric sleeve. Can anyone give me advice on this? My research says that it is generally used on people who have 500lbs or so to loose and is part one of a two part process. He said his suggestion for this was based on the fact that I don't have insurance and if the lapband slipped then I would have to pay to have surgery redone. I need somewhere that can help. I was banded in mid-2005. Needless to say I had a crappy doctor and developed problems. My original doctor no longer does this procedure (Thank God!) and I along with the rest of his patients were handed out amongst the remainder of the physicians at the surgery center. After 2 years I finally got the courage up to have an Upper Endoscopy. I was scared about the possible damage my original doctor might have caused. My new doctor performed the endoscopy and said it was okay. I originally weighed 297. My highest weight was over 300lbs. I got down to the 160's this time last year. Has anyone heard of the sleeve surgery? My dr's (Moises Jacobs and Eddie Gomez) in Miami, Flordia do this surgery. In a nutshell, it is a surgery they do before lap band (it is considered part of a 2 part surgery, first sleeve than lapband) for those that have to loose at least 100 lbs before surgery. Anyway, they have been doing a study and research and found out that the sleeve surgery is recommended (by them) to those that have failed with lapband.
