Newbie weighing option band vs. sleeve

Hello to all you brave souls ,

My family doctor recommended Lap Band. Through research, visiting this forum, and finding the right surgeon I thought I was on my way. At the private seminar preparing me for surgery, they discussed the three options this surgeon completes. Here, I found that both the Lap Band and the Sleeve cost the same and my BMI and age make me easily eligible for both. They told me that after the healing process, Lap Band patients hunger spikes while Sleeve patients appetites remain diminished. Sleeve surgeries remove the part of the stomach that produce the majority the the hormones that elevate appetite:nervous?

I really think Lab Band is the way to go for me, but am worried about appetite spikes and failure. I also worry about erosion, slippage and port problems. As well, with the Sleeve, I am very worried about leakage, and regaining the weight after the banana shaped stomach begins to stretch. I know that with the band, a fill could make all the difference if your weight begins to climb:confused:?

Any encouragement, information, and support would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You probably will not get to many replies because the people here tend to know mostly about the band. I love my band and i am not having problems with hunger. If your getting to hungry you just get another fill. Good luck, Donna

I appreciate your input. I believe I have decided on the sleeve.

I will continue to visit this site to hear Lab Band stories. Perhaps if the sleeve fails for me, they say that I can always convert to the band.

I wish you continued success.

Cathy

But why would consider a 2nd surgery??? Yikes.

The sleeve does sound less complicated than the Roux-n-Y .

Can it be done laproscopically??? What is the recovery time, surely is longer than LapBand as they do remove most of your stomach, therefore more stitching and healing to be done.

None of your internal organs are CUT in Lapband, making recovery time mininal and very painless...

I was out walking around the block the same evening as surgery and hiking in the woods the second day. Only took tylenol for pain for a couple of days. Pretty good I'd say...

But the advantage with the Sleeve is you don't have to have repeat visits to the Doc's for fills....

Pros and Cons to both..

What are the COST differences?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
