I'm so glad this forum got started. I wasn't looking forward to losing one my favorite places on the web now that I'm getting a sleeve.

Any other sleevesters out there? I'm in the process of getting scheduled for Sept.

I know that head hunger got me here, but your right I did the surgery and that was hard, so I can't waste my effort on eating bad stuff. I'm usually ok, but the hubby is a total snacker addict! I am buying pretzels instead of chips and SF instead of reg pudding...but I can't get over the whole "full thing," it is amazing! I'm full after 1/2 c, instead of the 2-3 c full over flowing plate, I used to eat, I am so amazed... thanks for understanding & sharing... all the best, Jeanne

Just thought I'd say hello.

I have my first appointment with a surgeon next Friday & if all goes well hope to have the VSG done mid to end of October.

I made my mind up a few years ago that VSG is the procedure for me, but there did not seem to be any reliable data on long term VSG patients as originally it seemed to only be offered as the first part in a two stage op for BMI 50+ people. So VSG was used to get people to a safe weight for a bypass op.

Long term data on just the VSG on it's own was not available (here anyway).

But now it seems that VSG on it's own is a good solution for BMI 40+ people.

Hopefully the Surgeon see it the same way :-)

Hi.

I m trying to decide between the sleeve vs the band.I am a heart patient and can"t risk doing a surgery too risky.I just got the ok from my cardiologist too have the surgery. I have been waiting for two years.I just learned about the sleeve and am leaning towards it but I am concurned on how long they have been doing this procedure.I like the fact that it reduces the grelin in youre stomak reducing hunger and cravings.I would like to hear from others.

Here is a link to the vertical sleeve gastrectomy messageboard which is one of the obesity help forums. There are lots of 'old timers' there, and you will seldom read about problems related to the sleeve compared with lap bands or RNY surgeries. While I am only a few weeks out, I am already totally in love with my sleeve, it has freed me from my obsessive overeating, and the weight is coming off easily. No more fills and unfills, or complications ever again.

Welcome to the forum. There actually are long term (at least 5 years) studies out there.. go to Obesity Help.com and click on Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. I had surgery on July 2nd.. I have lost 51 lbs since surgery.

Hi Rose-your weight loss is awesome-I had surgery on July 15 and have lost 30 pounds....I am ecstatic and DEFINITELY not complaining but losing a little slower than you-was just wondering if your exercising. Exercise has always been my weakness and I know I could lose alot faster and was just wondering if this helps in losing approximately a pound per day. Thx!

I think for most of us, there are 3 concerns when it comes to long-term:

1) Will I lose all my weight

2) Will I keep it off long-term

3) Will I find myself getting sick as a direct results of this surgery

For #1 the 5 year study done by LapSF says that you will lose your weight.

For #2, you can regain with any surgery if you don't make the lifestyle changes. But that people are finding with a sleeve is that if the boughie size is small enough, the sleeve doesn't stretch out and the long-term regain stats are good.

For #3, partial gastrectomies have been done on ulcer and stomach cancer patients since the 70s and those people go on to have healthy lives with no direct impact from the surgery. The only thing to watch out for is osteoporosis, which can be solved by taking a Calcium supplement

Here is a link to LapSF's 5 year study. Although they studied people for 5 y ears, they only reported results from when they started using the smaller boughies. Note that each line is a set of patients. So one set of data is for patients 3 years out from the sleeve, one for patients two years out and one for patients 1 year out. It's not the weight lost by a single set of patients at 1 year, 2 year and 3 year like I thought when I first read it.

SSAT - SSAT 2008 Annual Meeting Abstracts - Laparoscopic Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy for Morbid Obesity: a Report of a Five-Year Experience with 750 Patients</b>

The interesting thing is that the 3 year patients had a higher BMI on average and so lost more absolute weight even if their EWL % was lower. The 3 and 2 year patients lost more absolute weight than the RnY group they were compared to, in fact. I think that's promising because it shows you *can* lose a lot of weight if you have to.

Brian - Go onto www.surgicallyslim.com Mount Sinai's bariatric weight loss group, NYC The VSG is recommended as an excellent surgery for patients that are in the danger zone- you can read about why there. I have massive heart damage and I am having a sleeve Sept. 8, so if you want tune back in and I will let you know what happened.

Listen- what they had me do was an angiogram to make sure I was clear before the VSG. Then in the hospital I have 3 different doctors to monitor my fluids to make sure I don't go into congestive heart failure. Most important - think about doing it in the hospital that has treated you successfully for heart problems and make sure that if you need an ICD you get an ICD. Possibly the number one thing most of us heart patients can do to save our lives.

Thanks! I actually have exercised three times since surgery. Once I walked 1/2 mile, Saturday I rode my bike one mile and Saturday I pushed mowed the grass. I NEED to get my rear end in gear and start exercising!!!
