PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by chicagorocks,

Getting ready for the surgery and looking for some thoughts on what to tell the kids. They are both under 5 and I don't want them to know too much, but I think they need to know why I don't feel good and why they can't jump on daddy's tummy. Any thoughts? How long did parents wait before lifting up their kids, especially babies?

I received my letter to stay out of work for 3 weeks after surgery (8/31) but It has the dr name and location which makes it pretty obvious what my plans are ! Of course it does what was I thinking . The letter just states major surgery but the location and Drs name is a giveaway . I'm going to go to my PCP and hope they will write it over for me on their letterhead . Wish me luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  4. Hello, I am really excited to finally finish all these appointments, and excited to finally meet my surgeon. Now these questions may have or may have not appeared on this forum. You see I am a musician, well vocalist to an up and coming heavy metal band. Now, for those of you who know know that us vocalists have to use our diaphragm, and it takes up some energy to be either singing on stage or while recording vocal tracks. I wanted to know how long does it take after surgery for one to go back to singing? Are there any techniques that one should do to fasten up the pace? and will I be losing a lot of energy to the point where I'll feel weak on stage? Please I hope so…

  5. Here I am less than 36 hours before I take my seat on the losers bench. Currently on day 12 on my 14 day liquid diet. Pause to knock on wood, I made it with out cheating and no major craving episodes. Hopped on the scale this morning and I'm down 14 lbs since my pre-op visit, 36 since I started this journey in March 2016. Someone today applauded my weight loss and commented, that if I can do this without surgery, why am I having surgery. Well my friend I said with a smile on my face. These 5 months have prepared me for the rest of my life. See, I've lost massive amounts of weight before, once I took phentermine and lost about 50 lbs, of course when I got off the…

  6. Hi - I've been reading here for a very long time, but this is my first post. I am in a desperate situation with my VSG and need some advice. Back story: I had a lap band placed in 2006 and was very sick with it for a long time. I met with my surgeon last September and we decided to revise to a VSG. I did the six month supervised diet and everything for insurance. Revision was scheduled for April 19, 2016; in the recovery room he tells me that he could not revise to VSG because I had far too much inflamed scar tissue and that we need to wait four months for it to calm down and revise then. OK. So - VSG scheduled for 8/15; all is well. Office called today and a…

  9. So learned a lot at my pre-op class this morning. One: I wish I would've thought to bring a snack! 5 1/2 hours of talking about food - my stomach was growling 3 hours in. I was prepared for a two-week liquid diet, instead, we're on a high Protein, no starch diet. Turns out I can still eat. (YAY) Until the day before surgery, then that will be clear liquid only. Love the bariatric team at my hospital: informative and very supportive. They all gave us their email addresses and encouraged us to contact with any questions we may have. There is a support group that meets a couple of times a month. And we get a 3-month membership to the hospital's gym. Sweet. They'll…

Hello, My name is Rob and I live in FL. I am looking into surgeons in Mexico to have the gastric sleeve procedure done. Does anyone have experience with this? And if so can you please share any advice you may have? Of course I would love to have surgery here in the states but my insurance doesn't cover me even if my doctor deems it medically necessary, which she has. Mexico is the most affordable option for me right now. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm trying to start making some of the lifestyle changes now. I am cutting out soda (diet and regular), I am working on limiting carbs. The thing I'm not sure is what carb limit I should be aiming for? Anyone else try to start the major lifestyle changes months before surgery? I am doing a daily Vitamin, more to get in the habit than anything else. I'm having a Protein smoothie for Breakfast to get in that habit. Hi all, I am awaiting insurance approval for my surgery. I started my journey back in March. Because of additional testing, to be cleared for surgery it has caused a delay in what I thought would have happened by now. I was hoping to have my surgery before going back to school for the fall semester starting in September. It looks highly unlikely now☹️. I was wondering if anyone had surgery while in school? I would not be able to take weeks off from classes. The program I am in is highly competitive and it would push my graduation date back a year if I take time off (graduating May 2017). What was your length of time out from work or school after having surgery? I do n…

  24. Okay, so I've been heavily looking at the Angeles Hospital in Tijuana Mexico. I only felt safe telling a close friend about this but she is just not supportive. In the beginning I planned for her and I to go together. We hadn't seen each other in several years since I moved away. We are both young 22 year olds and have been in contact over the years just never met up. I should add that we have been friends since we were 7. Like most people we often had our differences but never saw eye to eye. Still we were there for each other. This situation has really bought our friendship to a tipping point. At first I was fine with her not being supportive. I said I would travel …

Anyone who had anything similar to those procedures, I'm super interested to hear of your recovery and how long before returning to work (though I realize everyone is different). I'm still bouncing back and forth from being absolutely sure about the surgery, then times I wonder if I will someday regret this. My mom is very worried about it all... She thinks it's too drastic. But my friends are very supportive. I have a friend who's also going through the process with me, and I know the doctors personal scrub, who also had the sleeve by him a couple months ago. 35. Hi, I'm Kerry & I'm towards the start of my WL journey & having recently been to a group seminar to find out more about the types of surgery available on the NHS. I have decided that the bypass may be most suited to me however the surgeons opinion could sway this. I have my first appointment with the surgeon on 16th Aug. Just wondering what to expect really from this appointment & then going forward. Is there anything it would help for me to be aware of? I'm not really sure of the process, they told me its around a 6 month wait for the actual op so will I not see them again until pre op?
