PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by AMS3188,

Hi there, So this is my first post. Bypass scheduled for August 8th, and dealing with a pretty restrictive pre-op diet because I haven't been able to lose the weight my surgeon wanted me to. I know a lot of people have a more intense pre-op diet than me, but this one got dropped on me at the last minute, and I'm really having a tough time getting my head around it. I know it sounds crazy, but I feel truly devastated about what I think of as "losing food" as part of my life. I never realized how out of control my eating was, or how dependent I am on food until now. I am surprised because I have been able to eat nothing but Water for over a week in the past, but that w…

I seen allot about giving up diet soda on the boards today and I was just wondering what the reasoning behind giving it up is, diet Pepsi has no calories, no carbs, no sugar. Is it just the carbonation? Just curious I'm new to all this, my initial consult is Aug 10 and I have to do 6 months.

  4. As most (I can imagine) I've been lurking through many forums gathering all of the information I possibly can before visiting my bariatric surgeon for a consultation on August 9th. I've made an appointment with my primary care specialist for the first to expedite the process of insurance approval (bcbs) I am a bit nervous for one reason I have been extremely fourth coming with my past with my PCP in which I struggled with methampetimine addiction (take a wild guess one of the reasons that became my drug of choice) anyhow I am about a year and 5 months in recovery and successfully completed rehabilitation. I am very scared that bariatric surgeon may see that as a hindera…

Hey y'all! I'm new on here and I'm super excited about going on this journey getting the VSG surgery and all! I am far ahead of schedule just getting started so I actually have to do 6 months of a program for my insurance to cover the surgery. I'm down to 5months now and I'm feeling great I should be done by December with my last appointment. The thing that gets me is I got an email from my surgeon's office with a tentative date of my surgery and I'm confused. I'm just wondering why it's for March 20th 2017!!! I feel like that's kind of far away I was gearing towards something more like mid-January maybe so I'm a little disappointed. That seems just like so much more…

What has everyone's recovery period been like? I will be having my surgery towards the end of August and I'm wondering about time off work and lifting and things like that? I have a three year old so I'm a bit nervous about the lift restriction and worried that I won't feel like getting up and moving around to take care of her. My husband will be taking some time off work but I wanted to hear about other people's experiences and how much physical activity you could tolerate, and how long before you were resuming normal routines and things?

I was just wondering how much weight your surgeons told you you have to lose before surgery. I just found out I have to do 6 months medically supervised diet before approval so I'm worried that I won't lose enough in that time or that I will get obsessed and lose too much and the insurance will think I can do it on my own and deny me

Make sure you check your co-pay and deductible if you have one. I received a call and follow-up letter from the billing department from the hospital where my surgery will be performed. I was told I had about $1,600 still to meet my deductible and with my percentages I would need to pay about $2000.00 prior to my procedure. I checked myself and based on my calculations it would less than 1000.00. Went for my pre-op today and had them re-work the numbers, billing came back with about $1,200.00. I with the help of the office staff in the bariatric practice, insisted that they re-check again, and wouldn't you know I was right. My co-pay was $900.00.

  11. My pre-op appointment is literally less than 24 hours before my surgery. I'm not sure what they will require. I've seen that some people are being asking to drink Citrate before to clean them out. Well considering how my pre-op is at 1230 and I won't get home till 2/3 I feel like that's a little too late if I'm going to be required to do it. I personally was planning to have a bottle over the weekend anyways before I start my 2 days of clear liquids. Do you guys think it'll matter if I do it over the weekend as opposed to doing it the day before?

I went to my informational seminar tonight and the surgeon said 30-40 percent of sleeve patients regain their weight. That scared me, it seems like a really high number. I'm scared I will fail at this. Anyone else hear these numbers and get scared? If so how are you managing that fear. I'm committed to doing this and doing it right but I must admit this has my head spinning.

Today a good opportunity came up for me to discuss getting WLS with my husband. I was nervous - I just really didn't know what his response would be. My guess was that he'd be against it - the surgery and spending the money. However, he surprised me! He is totally onside with it! He said that if it'll make me happy then I should do it. I think at first he thought I'd be able to get it done at no cost (I'm in Canada), which I could if I wanted to wait years - so I said, no, we'd have to pay. Again, he was fine with it. It's good to get that hurdle out of the way. Our young daughter was away all day with friends so he and I spent a wonderful day on the deck in the …

My final weigh in after my 6 month supervised diet was last Thursday July 21st. I made sure that I got done all my required testing and paperwork before that date so that on Thursday my claim can be sent to my insurance company for approval. My NUT said if my insurance coordinator sends my claim in on Thursday then I should hear something on The following Monday which was 2 days ago. I've been calling my insurance company everyday which is Highmark BCBS and they keep telling me they don't see anything. 2nd day of my two week pre-op liquid diet and I have absolutely no appetite. I made sure to cleanse my refrigerator of temptations, and purchased Protein, crystal light, Soups, ices and popsicles. Day one I had to drink a Protein shake at bedtime to meet my protein goals. Today, I have no appetite at all, not for contraband just nothing, drink my protein and had Soup for lunch just because I know I have too. I know day 2, is too early to make any kind of determination of how this will go. I am wondering if anyone else entered their pre-op phase with no appetite?

I thought I understood this procedure but now I am confused. I have seen so many people writing about eating foods remorsedully after surgery. Can you really never have soda or dessert or pizza again (examples of food). My impression was you want to eat healthy Protein rich foods and generalLY avoid junk foods. However I did not expect people to say they can never have an unhealthy moment again! Maybe one chicken wing instead of 12. A bite of burger instead of 2. Can someone who had surgery actually educate me on what eating is like afterwards. Sent from my SM-T807V using the BariatricPal App

Hi there everyone, Day 5 of my liquid diet today, jumped on the scale this morning and I am down 11 pounds. I haven't really been hungry. Hard to believe and have to wonder how good that can be for my body, but I am not going to complain about it. I have been in really good spirits until today, when I got a little irritated with someone.
