PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Started by daizymom,

I'm in Canada, so our process is a bit different and usually longer. I was referred for WLS in Feb by my family doctor, and attended the orientation on April 18th. I have now completed all the prerequisite appointments and have been cleared for surgery. Looking forward to getting a date to meet the surgeon and then to finally have my surgery date!

So I first decided I wanted this surgery when I went to a seminar in June. I filled all my paperwork out then and scheduled my first appointment in July. That got rescheduled by the office for September, and now I find out that the doctor has medical issues and is no longer performing surgeries. I know he can't help that, but its so frustrating to wait this long just for my first preop! Now I have to start ALL over with a new doctor in October. Anyone else feel like they have problems straight out the gate? Rant over. Sent from my VS986 using the BariatricPal App

iam new at this. I have been going through the steps to get the surgery done but they want me to lose some weight before they do it. But it is hard for me to get around because I have bad back problems. I was wanting to see if anyone has had the same problem and what is the best way to workout Sent from my LG-D855 using the BariatricPal App

  7. So I just started on my 6 month MSWL program through my surgeons office. I called my insurance today just because I wanted to confirm that they cover the surgery and also to see what the conditions were for approval. The lady I spoke with said they do cover it and that there is no "time" requirement or amount of weight I need to lose. Hmmmm....that's interesting, and news to me! Glad I called to check. The insurance coordinator at the surgeons office previously told me it was REQUIRED by my insurance to do the 6 month program. But according to my insurance, that's not the case. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm happy but also super confused as to why they would t…

I am beyond stressing! My surgery was approved and scheduled for 9/29. I had my medical clearance appointment this past weekend. My doctor never sent the script for a spleen ultrasound he wants done because on existing issue I have with my platelets. Fine. That's now scheduled for the Tuesday before the surgery. I had the ekg, blood work, and chest X-ray. The nurse at the hospital said it has to be sent over to my primary doctor for the clearance but everything looks great. I get to my primary today and he reviews it and says there is a problem with my ekg and he wants to repeat it. He does and the problem is still there. Inverted t waves. Hello everyone!! I just recently started my journey for weight loss surgery and can say I'm super excited!! However I have this fear of being denied my surgeon gave me a surgery date of December 16 and I have been going to a ton of appointments just nervous because I have a surgery date without an approval. Anyone else experience this? It's very emotional for me. I have Empire BCBS metropolitan plan and my bmi is 44 they told me I have great insurance and they don't feel there's any concern for denial but after reading a lot of post I'm nervous Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hey all! This is my first time posting! I heard about the site at one of my doctor visits and realized it's a good idea to start finding some kind of support for now and after. Some about me! Sorry if I ramble.... 33 soon to be 34, and have been obese literally all my life. Yoyo dieted several times with no success. Highest weight was this past January at 374. Woke up one morning with shortness of breath and severe heart palps. Thought I was having a heart attack. Went to the ER, no attack, just anxiety apparently. Also emergency doc says my weight was dangerously high even though my bloods, X-rays, and MRI's look like a normal weighted person (go figure). That was my…

Hi everyone, I went thru the second step required by my Kaiser today. The surgeon, nutritionist and our case manager each spoke and explained the surgery, diet and requirements to achieve surgery. We got our binder ( WLS bible) I'm very lucky. I don't have to do any sleep apnea or endoscopic procedure. I will have 3 appointments. One with Nutritionist, Psychology evaluation and a meeting with surgeon to discuss what procedure is best for me and my surgery goal weight. Once I have reached weight goal I will do all blood work and if everything is good I will have my WLS I hope I can go through all the hoops and have surgery sometime in December. Only time will tell. So I called the surgery center back and got an appointment with Dr. Fedorka. It's scheduled for July 10th for me to have my pre surgery talk with him. If anybody has any thing they would like to share I would love to hear it, from your your experiences at st. Bernardine, how it was the meeting with the surgeon and what he expected from you before your surgery, did you have to meet requirements and is so did you have to meet back with the surgeon before he scheduled your surgery date?. Things like that. Anyone's experiences are welcome and wanted please.

I just had to share my craziness this morning. I'm on day 1 of my pre-op diet. First of all I hate bananas, and I can't actually remember the last time I ate fruit. Today, Day 1, 8am, driving to work and I swear I can smell bananas and I reacted like I'd been on Survivor for the past month and had been living on a diet of rice and coconuts. Geez, I longed for that banana... And had a near nervous breakdown because I can't eat fruit for the next 2 weeks. I'M MENTAL !! Haha. Tell me I'm not the only crazy person here. I told my first surgery lie today. I'm having surgery Oct 10th and starting to prepare things/people for after. So far nobody has asked what the surgery is for, but today someone did! I'm not telling people who are not all that close to me or I think wouldn't be supportive. So I told her I was having a hernia repaired. Unlike a lot of people here, I'm actually not, so it was just a flat out lie. I hate lying!! I felt so awkward. She apologized right away and said "oh I'm sorry, that's personal" probably because I looked so awkward answering her, lol. Anyone else lying? Hope I get more secure with answering. I'm dreading the moment someone says oh I had that done too and w…

  39. I've been lurking around the forum since June, but I figured it's time I introduce myself and post my story. So, here it goes. I am currently 32 years old, 254 lbs (originally 290), married and mother to a 2.5 year old girl. Like most around here, I have struggled with my weight my entire life. A few years back I successfully managed to literally lose a whole person's worth of weight... I was 165 lbs for a brief time. I eventually got pregnant with my daughter and all the weight came back. By the time I delivered, I was 290 lbs.... three months after delivery, I weighed 264 lbs. Late last year, I became extremely depressed and my weight ballooned to 290 lbs. I eventua…

I am getting surgery at the end of September. I have to do the 2 week liquid diet. I wanted to start doing a liquid diet once a week, then 2 or 3 Times a week and progressively work up to the two weeks so it's not completely overwhelming when I have to do all liquids. Can anyone give me an idea off what their liquid diet looks like on a daily basis? What are you drinking? Are these drinks ok - v8, light and fit Protein smoothies, creamy Soups? I am following the diet to a tee. I eat around 750 calories a day and and an average of 30 carbs. I drink 96oz of Fluid and have enough Protein for an NFL line backer.
