So, after over 6 months of testing, consults, and waiting, I am finally finished and am waiting for approval from my insurance company. As long as they approve me, which I can't see why they wouldn't, I will be having my sleeve done on October 20th. People have been asking me if I am excited, or scared, or nervous...and to that, I answer "YES"! It's amazing the amount of emotions I am going through. One thing I can say is that I have an awesome support system, which starts with my husband. He is the one that politely suggested the surgery. Not because he thinks I am fat, but because he is tired of seeing me so depressed all of the time. He feels helpless, like no m…

Sheesh what a long hard journey this is!! I have a very good friend who had lap band and every single little thing I say gets compared to her story! For example today...I say I finish my 3 month pre op diet tomorrow, and I called my dr and it sounds like I still have a long road ahead of me, waiting for insurance approval, waiting for a dr appt, then preop diet and surgery date, she instantly fires back well I had a 6 month diet, and a 4 week pre op diet! It's just like sheesh let me vent just a second about how I am so ready for surgery! She constantly says snide comments about how I could never be a size 10 (I'm a size 22) or how I'll lose the weight and gain it all bac…

I was extremely excited and determined when I decided to have this surgery. I knew 100% this is what I wanted and was going to do no matter what. As my surgery date gets closer (September 20th), I seem to be having second thoughts. I keep going back and forth in my mind if this is what's right for me. Has anyone else been experiencing this? If so, what gets you through? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

My surgery was 07/05/2016 and after that date I have been having a burning sensation in my throat. I did some research and found that, it is GERD and after awhile of having it, it could turn into CANCER. So, I contacted my surgeons office right away. They said that they will have the doctor to call me back. My question to you is, Is this true? and what information can you give me on this subject. I thought it was something minor and would later go away on its own. Can you enlighten me on any information that you can add?

So my mom keeps acting like she knows everything about me having the sleeve because 8 years ago my dad had gastric bypass and she went through that with him. I keep trying to explain to her that they are not the same things. Her biggest negative comments are that I will still crave junk food and that I will be super depressed because I can't have said junk food, and she really cannot get it out of her head that I am not as likely to have dumping syndrome as my father was with his surgery. I live with my parents so my mom just won't give it a rest the closer and closer I get to surgery. I finally told her that I don't want to talk to her at all about the surgery any…

Over the past year of my pre-op dieting I have completely changed my life and dropped 40 lbs by myself. I do Protein shakes, eat less and avoid carbs as much as possible. I'm basically eating the same way I would post op except with a normal stomach. All I can think about is how the are cutting out 3/4 of my stomach and that I will never be normal again. I have an Aunt that had gastric bypass in the 90's and to this day she still has issues with dumping. I don't want to be that person who throws up every time they go out to eat or has one drink and acts like a drunken fool. Since I have already completely overhauled my lifestyle I find myself wondering if I truly need th…

At what stage is nicotine tested? I am a smoker and plan to quit like yesterday. I know how bad it is and the problems it can cause with surgery so I am working on quitting now. I will meet with my surgeon next month for the first time and probably won't have the sleeve until Dec or Jan. When is it tested? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hello my second family! Just had my first consultation and it was wonderful! Lots of information and I already have pre op appointments set up for September and October. Fingers crossed for December 26th surgery date (it's my 45th birthday too)!! I wanted to ask if people here tend to take excedrin for headaches? I hear a lot of heavy people tend to take it and I am 1 of them. Almost daily. I asked the doctor and he didn't seem to feel it's a problem BUT I think I should ween myself off sooner than later. What do you guys think? To let you know ... I take only 1, almost daily, for the caffeine of it (not a big coffee drinker). Let's be nice with your comments too please.…

I don't know how and I'm too scared to ask but I was APPROVED!! I have called and spoke to 4 different ppl at United Healthcare and they all have confirmed that I was approved for the Gastric Sleeve and all they need is the actual surgery date. I'm blowing up my surgeon's office but no one is answering. The reason I am so shocked is I have only completed 4 of the 6 supervised diet visits but for some reason the insurance specialist submitted my file and it was approved #ThankYouJesus Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Started my diet this morning as prescribed for my surgery in two weeks. I was looking for an app to help me with my eating portions and times after surgery, and weight loss. Any suggestions? I've used My Fitness Pal in the past but I know it doesn't let you log in if you haven't consumed enough calories. We are going to be so restricted for a while post-surgery so I didn't think It's the barest choice for sleeve patients. Thanks, y'all! Hi, my current insurance doesn't cover the sleeve and I'm considering Mexico. I'd like to try one more thing: buying a second insurance policy that does cover the procedure. The only problem is that I don't know who does or doesn't cover it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Which insurance companies should I check out? Thank you!!

I'm 24 years old and I am one Appointment away from picking my date for my procedure. I am kind of afraid, but excited at the same time. This is my second time going thru the entire process. The first time I was so scared I back out, but this time I'm truly ready. I just need some advice and some encouraging words so I won't back out. So, hi! I'm totally new here -- this is my first post on this site. I'm a 23-year-old American woman who currently is studying abroad in Germany. I've been thinking about getting sleeved since January. I'm 5'6" and weigh about 187lbs. I guess even though I'm not "that" big right now, I feel like I have no control whatsoever over my weight. I've been overweight since I was about 9, and now, not even 10 minutes go by that I don't think about my weight. I'll lose weight on a diet, gain it all back with interest, wash, rinse, repeat. I have to eat fewer than 1200 kcal and exercise for at least an hour every day to lose even a pound a week. I'm considering this surgery, in…

So here's the story... I'm scheduled for surgery on the 13th...yay!! I'm also a low bmi at 36.5 so I only have to do a week for you preop diet. But this week has been the hardest trial in my food career. Not only is it my birthday during the diet it is also my bf birthday and a important event centered around food. If my preop was low carb meals mixed with shakes it would be a breeze. But nope my doc wants 5 shakes a day nothing else but Water. No Jello, no Popsicles, no broth nothing to it break up. Never in my life have I wanted a mixed greens salad with chicken in my life. I can do without the burgers and super fatty foods. I just need something different than…

My surgeon doesn't give a goal weight, they ask what my goal is (160, i'm 5'8") and said it sounded good. Is there some kind of formula to figure out a realistic goal weight after RNY? Do many people reach the "healthy" BMI range or should I expect to be something higher ? How long does it usually take to reach goal?

Ok so straight to the point... I'm dead scared from the anesthesia part of the OP... I have my initial appointment with the surgeon next week and he will evaluate when I can be sleeved... So I've had a kidney stone like 5 years back and the doctor said that they can extract it from my penis (excuse my language) but to do so I have to be put on anesthesia so at first I agreed and I met with the anesthesia specialist as part of the procedure to learn more about it and that was the day this trauma and severe phobia was born in me after he started explaining to me how difficult it is to keep me alive while I'm asleep and how high the chances are that I could have a stroke and…

Hello everyone I am new to this site. I have a question though. I have finished all of my requirements for the surgery besides, seeing the nutritionist next month and losing the 15lbs. I'm at a point of excitement and I'm ready to see my surgeon. The first consultation I had was with her Nurse Practitioner, however it was suppose to be with her but she wasn't in. I let that slide. Now I'm stuck again because she is out on leave. No one has returned my calls and I'm worried about getting surgery done from her because she is never around. My surgery is suppose to be done at John Hopkins Bayview Hospital in Baltimore MD. I requested to see another surgeon there and they said…

I started this whole process because in December I found out I had to get a midline abdominal muscle resection and complete abdominal wall repair- due to multiple(4) large (largest is 5") complicated reoccurring hernias... went to a surgeon and he said lose 40lbs we'll do the surgery... that was December 2015 and I weighed 285lbs.... I have been trying to lose weight for 9 months- diets, meds, exercise, gym, more diets, more meds- And I actually gained 15 lbs smdh...3 months ago (6 months into failure) I decided to go ahead and proceed with Gastric Bypass Surgery as everyone had been suggesting... Still never lost any weight but maintained at 300lbs since I made the deci…

Is/has anyone gone through Riverside Hospital in Columbus for their sleeve? I just met w/my PCP yesterday and he filled out my paperwork for financial aid- as an OhioHealth employee (where this surgery is being done) it's going to be $7200. Just did my urinalysis/blood work this morning and have my first group nutriton class Thursday. I will get scheduled with my visit with the surgeon on Thursday as well. What happens after this? According to my insurance, they really don't have a checklist for things to do. Does anyone have Medical Mutual Supermed Plus? If so, how long did it take to get approved and a surgery date? Hi everyone! I've been looking around on BP for a while now and I'm so excited to finally make my account and join you all in this journey. My first consultation appointment is next Friday and I have been dying for time to go faster so I can get started on everything. A little back story. I just recently turned 24, and I have struggled with obesity as long as I can remember. I have tried so many different diets and weight loss programs but nothing has really helped me long term. I lost some doing weight watchers, working out in the gym, and trying to eat healthy but I always failed to keep it off. I have been through a lot because of my weight and it's time for me to…

So my insurance info was sent in on Wednesday and I just got a letter saying they approved me for October 3rd ???? yay for getting approved! But now I have questions.... I had no idea they had me planned for October 3rd! I can probably make it work but I know the Dr office wants me in for 4 weekly pre-op visits before surgery and there aren't even 4 weeks until October 3rd! Hmmmm.... At least I can make the date work in my calendar, which was a pleasant shock. I should get some food for my post-surgery needs.
