PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

  1. Hi there - I have read some people experiencing bad gas pains after surgery - I am dreading this. I get bad gas pains maybe once or twice a year, but they are really painful ... I just hate it. I take Gas X, and rub by stomach in circles trying to get the gas out but usually stay up all night completely uncomfortable and in a lot of pain. Is there a prescription the surgeon can give me that will work better than Gas X ... or any other suggestions? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi all, I have posted recently telling everyone that I have decided to go with the surgery but from what I'm reading here I understand that it takes quiet a while until one goes into the OR but I am unable to comprehend why, is it only an insurance approval thing or is mandatory to go on a certain diet before surgery or how is it? So my question consists of two parts: 1) If I have the money with me now and I am ready to pay it in cash without a second thought, when can I have the operation done and do I still have to wait or can I just go get my routine medical tests done and have the surgery the next day? 2) If let's say it turns out to be as quick as I am claiming, fo…

Hi all, Well I've been on this journey since July 5th and I have completed all of the required classes and tests needed for surgery. After waiting 5 weeks for my insurance approval I get a call from my surgeons office that my insurance has denied me because I didn't complete the 6 month supervised weight loss. Now this is upsetting because my insurance provider informed my surgeon in July that I wasn't required to complete this. Now they are saying I do. Ugh! Do I have a case to argue? I could of had 3 months down already if they would of said this in the beginning. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am excited, not too nervous. I am a bit worried if I will be able to wear my bra post surgery. I never let the girls be free in public and I don't know if I am ready to start now. I guess my nerves won't kick in until tomorrow. However I am ready and I am so over this liquid diet lol. I am ready for my life to begin. I still haven't packed my overnight bag because I am a procrastinator plus I don't think I will be taking a lot of things. I am just ready for tomorrow to be here lol. Who else is with me?

I have a question. My office gave surgery date of Ocrober 4th. They want to to start my 2 weeks liquid diet on Monday. My question is I have not started on my vitamins. I am still waiting on my insurance approval first before buying. Should I go ahead and order my vitamins now or should I wait. Thanks!

I'm going to Ireland in two weeks for 10 days and I'm concerned my diet is going to go down the toilet while I'm there. I've already lost 23 lbs on Kaisers program diet but I'm doubting whether I'll be able to follow it in another country. My willpower is no problem at this point but I'm concerned with how many times I'll have to improvise and eat something that isn't exactly in my diet plan or I'll end up eating more than the 3oz of Protein. Any advice??? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm less than 3 weeks out from surgery and I'm so nervous!! Im assuming this is normal. I start my preop diet next Thursday. Some days I'm excited and some days I think do I really need to go this far?! But then I remember all the losing and gaining games I've played since high school. Please tell me I'm not the only one! I'm set to get surgery in November but my NUT told me that they want to see normal Iron levels before my surgery. Has anyone had low iron levels before surgery? If so, did they postpone your surgery or proceed with surgery? I've been taking 65mg a day of iron as suggested by my NUT but I'm concerned it will still be low at pre-op lab testing and they won't operate. Just a FYI...My iron was at level 7 in July. I've been taking 65mg of iron daily since. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi everybody, I'm having a difficult time discerning who I should tell I'm having surgery to. So far my husband and best friend know, and they are totally on board. I'm concerned about telling people at work. I work with an awesome bunch of people, my boss especially. I know I would not have issues taking time off for the surgery itself. I'm a desk jockey of sorts and the only exercise I get at work is the walk to and from the train station and to any meetings I might have, so I'm not too worried about only taking a week or so off. My main concern is all the appointments I'll need. I just got the appointment/pre-post-op class schedule. In addition to the surgeon vis…

I'm worried that my insurance is trying to find ways to deny me or something. In order to qualify for surgery I have to be over 40 BMI and complete their 6 month weight loss program with one of their coaches. I am just starting my 3rd month with their weight loss program and got an email today with my goals for the month. They want me to lose 10 pounds in the next 30 days. I am currently at a 41.7 BMI. If I lose the 10 pounds that takes me to a 40.7 and I will still need to complete 2 more months of their program, which I am sure would put me below the required BMI of 40. Has anyone else dealt with this? Can they deny me at that point? Also, if I don't reach the…

Today went so much better on liquid Diet. No desire to cheat. Energy is okay. Monday Morning is coming quick. I treated myself to a sugar free Rita's Italian Ice for dinner. 25. I went into this thinking I was gonna have to do three months medically supervised weight loss, then last week I found out that I have no supervised weight loss required and just a few appointments to take care of. Those appointments are scheduled for this week. My patient advocate says I can have surgery next month as my insurance normally approves in a week. At first I was really excited that I didn't have to wait months for surgery as I have been doing nothing for the last month but reading about it and participating on these boards. But now that October is drawing close and I have so little left to do I feel like it's all happening really fast and I'm getting nervous.…

So when I started researching the surgery I did the adult thing and I turned to my darling beau and I explained that I wanted wls, I followed up with how my weight was affecting me, stating facts about how I had been on this viscous cycle since high school of gaining and loosing. At that time he said ok, I don't think you need it, but if you want to do this ok. I guess in retrospect he was never really gung-ho about it, but let's fast forward to 2 1/2 months, 2 nutritionist visits, psych visit, ultrasound, and egd later. I mention to him that I'm almost ready to submit to the insurance and wanted to know how many days he planned on staying home with me for the afterca…

Pretty excited, but also really nervous. I'm doing a lot of going back and forth in my head. I'm going through with it no matter what, but of course there's a little devil on my shoulder. Today I started the pre-op diet, which is not liquid only. I can't get full, so I keep thinking about food, but I'm sticking to it. I had to stop birth control for the surgery, and I had my period two weeks ago. I got it back again since hormones are out of whack and am bummed I'll have it through surgery. So I found out over a week ago that my insurance has approved me for either gastric sleeve or bypass. I had told my surgeon before they submitted that I had a specific time frame in mind for this and he said he didn't think that would be a problem. I have called the center several times trying to get this scheduled as I know I have to meet with the anesthesiologist, the nutritionist, etc. When I called his assistant who does the scheduling she told me that I am on a list of patients that he is working to move to another surgeon!!! So I'm on my pre op diet. I failed Tuesday with 4 ounces of baked chicken breast and 2 packets of sugar (low sugar). These artificial sweeteners are terrible. Between the chemical, overly sweet and nauseating taste inducing low sugars, I'm about frustrated and sick. I haven't had this artificial crappie in 5 years. The premier Protein shakes and Quest powders are tolerable. For the past 6 months I did well still using very limited amounts of added real sugar. It's just frustrating to have to eat that garage again. Yes I knew this ahead of time. I just forgot how crappie I feel while I'm using it. Even stevia turns my stomachache. Ugh. I got a tentative date of October 3 and was tracking toward that. Last week my surgical coordinator told me that they wanted to move me to Sept 19th. I hadn't yet been submitted for insurance approval (Aetna) and thought it was never going to happen. But they called today and told me i was approved!!! I was positive that i'd have to appeal, because I have a lower BMI and my comorbidities weren't specifically on Aetna's list (PCOS & pre-diabetes). So excited and so nervous. I have to do just 2 days of the liquid diet this weekend and it's happening. Shocked... Thanks to everyone on this forum for all of the useful info!

  49. Hi; I am getting my sleeve surgery done on sep 6th with Dr Allan Cribbins. I would love to hear some experiences and have some fellow sleevers who are going through similar experience around the same day, particularly with Dr Cribbins. If you had had a surgery with Dr Cribbins in the past, would love to hear your experience. I have liked the guy, he seems very laid back and casual and takes time to answer the questions. I had a list of 20 or 25 questions and took almost 25 minutes in my last appointment. He was very patient and never rushed any response-including the hard questions I asked of him.
