PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

So, I'm being proactive. It's that impatience in me. Although I've opted to just be as patient as I can be (with the wonderful advice of others), I did take the initiative to call my insurance and get some more questions answered. I was told that my three months on a weight loss drug supervised by my doctor counts as one of the requirements; but I've got about 6 months under my doc regarding weight loss. My bmi is over the min requirement, so I've got that settled. Just need the psych evaluation and the go ahead from the bariatric surgeon. I'm thinking I won't need to wait so long anymore. I'm getting excited here. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hello. First post here. I'm one month away from my scheduled surgery and getting nervous. I just told my teenagers that I'm scheduled for surgery and they don't want me to have it. They want me to lose the weight the "right" way w diet and exercise. I am 75 lbs overweight and now this has cast doubt on my plans. I'm still planning, but want to see if anyone else has feedback on this....I'm single mom w diabetes, and high cholesterol and want to be healthier. They are worried I won't be able to change my habits after surgery and will gain weight back anyways.Ugh. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

So - I am 13 days pre-surgery and I'm super excited! However, I am encountering a lot negative people when I tell them about my plans for surgery. "ohhh you don't need that"; "why don't you just diet"; "people have died doing that you know!?" I am usually an open book and had no intentions of keeping my surgery a secret however, I now I'm second-guessing myself. Anyone else encountering the insensitive side of others? How are you dealing?

I finally finished all of my appointments besides my final 3 nutrition. I had a sleep study done on November 24th. I was told some one would call me with in 10 days with the results. After 10 days had passed I played phone tag with my doctors nurse. Finally I got a call back where she said I have extremely mild sleep apnea and it wouldn't need to be treated because the equipment was very expensive they wouldn't use it for such a small case. My question is will this be a good enough clearance for surgery? I've got the go ahead for every thing except this. I have a follow up in a couple of weeks for what I'm not sure since they gave me the results already. Sent from my S…

Did/do you all find this overwhelming? I spend most of the year in a 3rd world country working and would need to bring these things with me after surgery. The mail system is not reliable but I can also have friends bring with them when they visit is possible. The first two weeks clear Protein, which is good? And a good sight to get vitamin? Hi all, I am new here. I attended a weight loss surgery seminar last week (12/13) and they collected my insurance information. On Friday (12/16) I received a call from them informing me my insurance does cover surgery (not an official approval though, just that it is a covered benefit). I have my first official surgical consult on Wednesday (12/21). I've started jotting down questions, but I'm wondering if anyone has any questions you asked or wished you had asked. I'm hoping this process goes smoothly and that I am approved for surgery, but I also know it is a process. Thanks for any advice!

I am so worried about no support after I have surgery. I have no one to help me. Do you really need help after surgery? Can a person do this by themselves? I would appriciate any feedback. Iam almost there. I have very mild sleep apnea, so I have to wear the machine for 6 weeks and then they're hopefully going to do the surgery. My family continues to ridicule me about my weight and they are against weight loss surgery. I have had to be my own advocate. I would love to make some new friends here... I know I have posted a bit about my Dad. I am STILL set on surgery tomorrow...but this is what I have to deal with! Love him, but a LEMMING!!! The only real reason to have this surgery is to change your continuous hunger level....and that isn't guaranteed. Wacking off your stomach doesn't do much to your bodies ability to gain or loose weight. Slicing your self open and destroying your stomach sets you up for a possible lifetime of medical problems and pain, all for the promise of weight loss which I do believe will occur for you but at a dear cost. To be successful your meals will consist of a bland diet of about 4 tablespoons per meal. You don't need to cut ou…

Honesty I've been eating like total crap for the last couple weeks and I feel bad about it but for some reason I have this need to want to eat everything. I've been eating a lot of ice cream and bread eating this way is the reason I got as big as I am now and I know I have to change but I feel like I wanna eat what I can now before the surgery cuz then I'll be eating a lot healthier and won't be eating the junk. So I kinda wanted to get it out of my system now...I know that it's bad thinking and I'm trying to eat healthier but I still have moments where I'm like nahhhhh I need some ice cream. Hi! I have been struggling with weight loss for about 4 years now after I had my son. I finally got online to see how can I get help. I seen that I could schedule a consultation with a bariatric doctor because I prequalified by the answers of their questions. I have high blood pressure & sleep apnea. I'm so new to this and I just wanted to be put at ease on what's the steps after your first consultation with the surgeon & what should I look forward too. Hi People I'm in the process of booking a date for a band removal which will be followed by a sleeve (8-10 weeks later) and the surgeon has asked me to go on the VLCD/Liver Shrink diet for at least 4 weeks leading up to the band removal. Everything I've read about the pre-op phase is that people generally go on the pre-op diet for no more than 2 weeks. I don't know why he's asking for 4 weeks as he only looked at me, no bloods etc. My concern is not about not eating, it's about the impact it will have on my ability to function and keep working. Headaches, lethargy, mood swings etc are all things I'm concerned about. I am 31 years old, 6ft1 and weigh 170KG. I don't hav…

Should I be concerned that the sodium from my broth is too much?? I have had 24 oz, 1 premiere Protein shake, and crystal light. I'm already over the daily recommended sodium (per my fitness pal) and it is because of the broth. This next question sounds stupid for me to even ask butttt does drinking extra Water offset the sodium intake?

I managed to get through preop with only one pre planned mishap, and surgery is now just one more day away. But have I made the right choice? My heads still all focused on food. How I'm never going to get to fully enjoy a whole burger again. How every meal will only ever be mouthfuls. It freaks me out! Also, if I managed to lose 8kg in two weeks doing the preop diet, do I really need to have surgery. My problem is it's not just a little weight i have to lose, it's 70kg. Can I keep up a diet for that long, it'd take years? I asked my best friend that and all I got back was, well a lot of people have managed to do it on their own but everyone's different. I started this journey in July by going to one of the mandatory seminars to get into one of the clinics. The lady running the seminar told us it would be about a month before someone would call us and usually another 2 months before actually being seen. I think it took about a week before I received the phone call and was asked if I could come in the next day. I was excited! I didn't expect things to happen so quickly. And when I went in the next day, all of my appointments were set up for my 6 month supervised diet, my dietician appointments, fitness test, sleep study, endoscopy and psych evaluation. All of it. And now, I've finished. I've lost around 50 pounds. But…
