PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Questions before weight loss surgery. Compare procedures, get through insurance approval, prep for the pre-op diet, and find out what to expect.

So my surgery date is April 20th. I am looking into Vitamins and am not sure what is worth spending money on? I don't want to have to take a bunch of different things and am looking for something that has most of the vitamins I need in one. Is there anything like that out there that you all know of or am I going to have to just deal with it and take multiple vitamins? Thank you all for any advice you have!!!

  9. Hello all I'm new to this and was trying to not talk about it because of the judgement I may receive from friends and family, so I decided to reach out to a diverse community. I'm about 5'6 230 pounds and decided to speak with my doctor about the gastric sleeve. Since having a hysterectomy I have not been able to lose weight. I now have HBP, pre diabetic, arthritis in my back and joint pain. I wear my weight well many say however the sickness and meds says otherwise. Any tips for those who have less than 100 pounds to lose ? For many years I've tried to lose weight and will succeed but it comes back with vengeance. I've done meds that lead to anxiety in my life an…

Hey Everyone! I made the decision to get the gastric sleeve about a month ago - been tossing it back & forth for almost a year. Met for my initial intake Tuesday & qualified for the program. Submitted all the paperwork for my insurance this week and am hoping to hear back in the next couple weeks about a yay or nay. But I do have my psych eval next Friday .. I'm nervous cause I don't know what to expect. Wish me luck Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

  16. Hello We have united health care but weightless surgery is NOT covered. I have a hiatal hernia that will be fixed during my sleeve surgery. I was hoping that a bulk of the cost of surgery would be covered by my insurance now due to the hernia, ie-hostpial stay and anesthesiologist (2 huge expenses). I went today for another dr appt and they informed me that i have to pay $26,000 which is the cost of the sleeve and that includes the hospital stay and anesthesiologist. AND it has to be paid in full prior to surgery (set for april). I guess i just don't understand why the things my insurance WILL cover can't be deducted from the $26K, the office couldn't give me a answe…

Hello all! Yes, I know a passport is required. Mine expired. I've made an appt with the passport agency. They require proof of international travel for the process to be expedited. However I will be flying to San Diego & transported by van to Tijuana (very common for safety for these procedures). Has anyone else been in this position? My doctor quickly went over the results with my sister and I'm a little concerned. Apparently I have a small hiatal hernia, ulcers that are in the healing stage and moderate to severe gastritis. I am a social smoker- pretty much just when I'm hanging out with other friends who do, so I'll go weeks without and then have a few one night, then go another few weeks not even thinking about it. It won't be difficult to not do it prior to the surgery. How soon after would I be ok to resume smoking? I know, I know it's bad for me and the best thing to do is just quit forever, but I'm not going to. So if that's your advice, that's ok, but it's not happening. Lol. I enjoy it occasionally. What is the issue with quitting before surgery anyway? Is it because of issues with anesthesia or post-sugical clotting risk or something else? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using t…

I have been doing some reading about the 2 surgeries VSG or RNY. With the bypass I have seen a lot of people say that they are feeling hungry more and more. I have not read this with the sleeve. I do know that the VSG they remove the portion of the stomach that has the hormone ghrelin. This hormone is what says hey your hungry and with the RNY since the stomach is still there the hormone is still produced. I have been recommended the bypass because I have been on insulin for a while and this would be the best chance for me to get off my meds. I am worried that if I have the RNY I will feel hungry all the time and screw it all up. I have will power but I do think of a…

I just finished my 6 month supervised diet and weigh ins. Today is my appointment with my surgeon and hopefully today, I will have an idea of whats coming next. I've already done my psych eval and that went smooth. I know that my surgeon wants me to do some cardiac testing and a stress test, i'm a little nervous about both of those because I'm been extremely stressed lately. I know I will also have to meet with a NUT and what she called an exercise counselor? I'm so nervous though. I've got 2 insurances and I'm so scared that they both may end up denying me. Eating to many calories in a day is not really an issue for me.I do 1500-1800 per day. I am 5'7" and 260 lbs. i can gain weight in a heartbeat and i have sleep apnea. My husband is concerned that having surgury is not right for me and is concerned i may have 80% of my stomach removed and still not lose weight. He wonders if the surgery is only successful for people who ate calories above the recommended amount for their height and weight before surgery. Hey everyone! My name is Katie and I'm just beginning this Gastric Sleeve adventure. I went to a required seminar and was given some questions to ask my insurance company. They were: what is the required bmi, how many nutrition visits are required and how many physicians visits. So the insurance company said that these limits didn't exist I just needed a pre authorization for surgery. I contacted the surgeons office to see if this sounded right and they said that the surgeon will tell me the required length or time and bmi. Does anyone have an idea if this sounds right? All the reading I've done I expected to hear 35 to 40 bmi, and 90 days or six months of nutrition and p…

The nurse told me that once you start the 12 week class and you finish you can get a choice of a few surgeons and you can call them to see what their surgery dates would be she also did tell me that you can get on a cancellation list with the surgeon as well She said most patients get surgery dates within a month after completing the options class she said it's fairly quick as long as you do all the requirements that the doctors want. so I'm pretty excited I start my option class February 7. I have been reading posts on this site for a while. The posts are so educating. I have learned A LOT about the Gastric Sleeve, the surgery, the diet, problems and successes, you name it. This forum is so encouraging because I know where to go if I have problems. You all are so kind. I want to be like you all. I am going to my Seminar on Feb. 1st, so I have a way to go before surgery. I'm just trying to get my ducks in a row and get the ball rolling. My insurance will cover the surgery (not all of it of course). United Health Care requires a 6 month documented diet. I was on a 1500 calorie diet last summer for 4 months and I lost 17 pounds. I couldn't do it any more…
