Self pay and could cry over the amount, couple of questions

Hello

We have united health care but weightless surgery is NOT covered. I have a hiatal hernia that will be fixed during my sleeve surgery. I was hoping that a bulk of the cost of surgery would be covered by my insurance now due to the hernia, ie-hostpial stay and anesthesiologist (2 huge expenses). I went today for another dr appt and they informed me that i have to pay $26,000 which is the cost of the sleeve and that includes the hospital stay and anesthesiologist. AND it has to be paid in full prior to surgery (set for april). I guess i just don't understand why the things my insurance WILL cover can't be deducted from the $26K, the office couldn't give me a answer which was really frustrating. My insurance company HAS paid for all my tests (minus my deductible). I hope this makes sense. SO, one of my questions is, how much was everyones surgery for self pay? This just seems like an awful lot.

I'm self paying in Texas for $11,750.00. I know I could find a little cheaper but I really like my surgeon and he is very reputable so it is worth it to me. He sees patients from all of the country.

I'm having a revision of band to sleeve. My cost to the surgeon is $2300. My insurance will cover one or the other, but not both. So, I'm paying the $2300 to remove the band and $0 for the sleeve. My deductible and out of pocket has already been met this year.

I am self pay and just was quoted $23,000. The dr said to not even try to get the hernia repaired at the same time as my insurance sees that as a way to getting WLS paid for and will not pay for it.

I live in Wisconsin and it's the worst state to get insurance to mandatory pay and to also with one of the highest costs for WLS. I am now considering going to the Mexico Tijuana practice promoted on this site. For $5,000 +/- it's a great deal!

Am I ok to do this? I've researched them A LOT, but my gut still says it's not right to get surgery in another country.

Where were you would that amount? I am self pay in Wisconsin as well. I have a consultation with Froedtert in May. I am fearful of cost as well so I am starting to look at other options as a back up plan.

I was quoted that at Columbia St MAry's. I was quoted $35,000-38,000 at Froedert. It took forever for Froedert to call me back and had a long wait time to get into see the nut. and dr. and do all of the requirements. I knew I wanted it done fast as I was self pay, I shouldnt have to jump through the hoops. I got fed up and went to Tijuana for a quarter of the cost. Worth it!

Good luck in your choice!

Thanks for your response! I have decided to use Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas. They have been great so far...looks like June 29 will be my date!

I am in Ohio. Ohio State Wexner Medical Center quoted me $17,200. I am looking around too. I will need to find medical financing as well. Any suggestions on safe creditable financial institutions?

I would check out Mexico for sure. I also have UHC and they don't cover it... I paid out of pocket in TX and it was less than 9k for everything. Very pleased with my surgeon and my surgery!
