I'm gearing up to get back to a low carb diet. Salads have become a staple in my diet (coming up on one year out from surgery). One thing I'm mentally struggling with is that shift from low/no fat dressings that have reduced fat & calories to regular dressings that have higher fat & calories but very low carbs. My salads can't do a back stroke in my dressings, but I also can't get by with only a single tablespoon either...lol For you low carb gurus is this something you simply have to adjust to mentally? In the early days post-op I was low carbing but was pretty limited on what I could have. I've had a normal diet but the past two months I've been stuck in a …

I’ve had refried beans, the ricotta bake, mashed potatoes, cream of wheat, yogurt, puréed chili, tuna salad, smoothies, and everything from the liquid diet. Hi all- My surgeon's post-op plan allows 1-2oz pureed/mushy soft, high protein meals at days 3-14. For example: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, canned tuna, ground chicken and ground turkey. The "pureed/mushy" phase is combined and there is no separation regarding pureed vs mushy foods. I am almost 5 days post-op from VSG and so far, so good. I've had soup that's been pureed, greek yogurt with 1/2 slice of canned peach (in fruit juice, not syrup) pureed, canned chicken salad. There have been ZERO issues in terms of nausea/vomiting/discomfort and my serving size is 1oz at a time. I am close to meeting fluids goals and am hovering around 55 fl. oz/…

Hi all - I was revised from a band to VSG Monday 12/18. I came home from the hospital Wednesday night - things are going ok, but I've been sticking mostly to more clear liquid type stuff. I thought I was doing myself a favor by drinking the Isopure Zero Carb pre-made drinks, which give me 40 grams of protein each. I've had four of them since Wednesday. Unfortunately, I've spent an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom, with some fairly explosive issues. Also, have had some pretty bad lower right side abdominal cramping/gas/pressure. Anyone else have problems with sucralose?

*Before some people start with the whole " why would you have this surgery if your going to have take out. Take out made you fat" calm down lol many things made us fat but a bite of take out every now and again isn't going to make people fat. But if it's not for you that's perfect. But let's not judge people lol. I was just curious if people did how often and what they have and how much I rarely have take out/fast food.. if my family go to KFC I have the skin of one drumstick lol that's it. Or one hotwig that's me full. I find the amount I'm able to eat fascinating.

My surgery discharge directions read "Eat 3 meals daily, eat slowly and chew food well; avoid skipping meals." The first meal of the day is Breakfast and generally it is the meal that many individuals skip. A research study in Spain examined the possible link between breakfast consumption and obesity — especially abdominal obesity, which is the type most closely associated with the risk of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic problems. This epidemiological study included 1655 adults, about half each of men and women. About 53 percent were between 18 and 49 years of age, and the rest were between 41 and 64 years old. Two-thirds reported that they were habitually i…

OK guys!!!! I started Keto 2 weeks ago and would love to have a forum of just Fellow Ketoers!! We can trade recipes, stories, question, concerns etc. Keto stuff is all over the internet...but nothing about doing it after WLS. I use My Fitness Pal to track all food/drink, calories, carbs, fats. I currently stay until 12g carbs per day, 60g protein and 27g fat. I use Ketostix every morning to make sure I stay in Ketosis ( usually a 4) but I don't feel I'm losing quick enough. What is your experience so far with Keto and your daily intake of foods? It's just so hard for me to get in enough calories and protein.

Hi all. I had my surgery consult last week and will be doing 6 months of supervised weight management in preparation for the surgery (RNY bypass). The guidelines the nutritionist gave me for eating during this phase included eating 60-80 grams of protein per day and eating low fat. (Low carb was not included as a guideline but avoiding processed carbs, flour, sugar, etc. was.) Could someone let me know the rationale for eating low fat, both during this time period and following the surgery? Up to this point, during periods in which I have been feeling my best, losing significant amounts of weight, and managing my blood sugar levels well (I have type 2 diabetes), I ha…

I’m 3 weeks out and craving fruit so badly. How far out did you start eating fruit and what did you choose? My other issue is that I’m not pooping at all (TMI, I know) and I feel like fruit might help that along. I’m taking Linzess and drinking a laxative tea with no results. I have a bottle of mag citrate, but I’m trying to avoid it.

THE PORK RIND, PERFECTED: Chicharrones Cooked in Olive Oil Bacon's Heir takes fresh pork skin, melt off the fat, cure the skin in salt, and rapidly puff it in olive oil. The result is so outrageously fluffy they had to change the name. Pork Clouds are wonderfully fluffy crisps of pork skin, so fluffy that we couldn't in good conscience call them a rind. So we looked up and a more appropriate name dawned upon us. We love taking them on trips, particularly of the outdoor variety. Wherever they end up, they help to expedite a busy day, crispen a relaxing day, or punctuate a perfect day. Pork Clouds has 5 delicious flavors to choose from: Rosemary & Sea …

So, I'm 2 months out from RNY and still having a problem with hunger. About every 2 hours or so, I find myself thinking about food, wanting to go rummage thru the fridge or pantry for something to munch on while I'm working or on a conference call. Now, I know that's not a very good idea and so to help me NOT go back to old mindless eating habits, I started sucking on hard candies whenever I feel the urge to go get some food (outside of my planned 3 meals or snack times). Is this happening to anyone else? Does anyone else suck on hard candies, mints, chew gum, etc in between meals/snacks to try and quiet the head hunger? What's bad about this is that my hard candies are …

Hi everyone- I am desperate to find a GOOD thanksgiving dessert that isn't full of chemical sweeteners. My mom and daughter both are very sensitive to chemical additives, preservatives, sweeteners, and emulsifiers. I usually make a great pumpkin role or a cake of my gram's, (both are heavy in sugar) but really looking for something a little lower carb this year that we can all enjoy. I've recently gotten back on track and doing great with weight loss- don't want to totally blow it on one day but still want to enjoy. Any good ideas? TIA

If you type "obesity" and "malnutrition" into a search engine, it will return over a million results. The first few articles that show up are pretty much saying, hey! Obese people are actually malnourished! Who would have thought?! Then you read the articles, and they start blaming the modern agricultural methods and processed foods, soda pop and high fructose corn syrup. They could be right. But I'm interested in following this in a different direction.. or perhaps just further along the same lines. So, we'll take a person (we'll call her Cindy) that is eating the typical flour and shortening diet. She is gonna be short on vitamin C. (And D, and ch…

Hello! I'm scheduled for surgery December 19th (YAY!) but I'm nervous about the pre-op and post-op diets. I am an extremely picky eater - and I don't like any vegetables. It's a major setback and always has been but I try to make up for it in other ways. I trick myself into eating vegetables by loading fruit on top of greens in a smoothie and that works well but I don't want to live off of smoothies forever (sometimes I really get bored of them). I'm wondering how likely it is for my palate to change after surgery, I've heard it happens for some people. Any advice?

Headline: "Fish oil supplements during pregnancy don't improve child's intelligence, study says" There is a study where pregnant women consumed fish oil supplements, and the children were compared 4+ years later to the non-supplement children. The children scored the same. So the big headlines! Don't waste your money on fish oil supplements during pregnancy! Now let's back up. What is DHA? Alright, this post was inspired by the discussion about "intuitive eating". Ok, so 70% of residents of the United States are overweight or obese now. Mexico is similar, and although other industrialized nations are lower, they also have a significant problem. This statistic is derived from BMI tables, which are frequently inaccurate. The following study shows what I mean. Keep in mind it is looking at obesity, not overweight. http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0033308 Ok, so if you look at the fun graph (that I stole from some skinny skater) the lines show obesity. If the BMI line were moved to 25, then the picture beco…

So, when I was pissing away time on Facebook today, I saw an article that Whole Foods will start marking down prices on Monday and will start integrating Amazon Prime into their system to offer special deals to people with that service. What do you think about this development?
