Sometimes it seems like December is one giant party. You might have holiday parties at your work or your partner’s workplace. Friends and neighbors often have get-togethers. You might be hosting or going to family holiday parties, and New Year’s Eve is one of the biggest party nights of the year. All those parties can be fun, but they can be bad news for your waistline if you are not careful. You might be offered egg nog or another drink the second you walk in the door, and bowls of candy, nuts, and crackers may be set out already. Platters of fatty, doughy, and greasy appetizers may not be far behind, and all that happens before you even get to the main course and dess…

I'm an admittedly picky eater. Add to that an allergy to seafood and shellfish. I can't stand eggs and there are several veggies I don't like. (Zucchini, squash, Brussel sprouts all make me want to vomit!) I see lots of people discuss their daily meal plans centering on eggs and tuna or other fish or shrimp. Any suggestions for picky eaters like me? I'm post-LapBand pre-RNY revision, and I'm trying to plan way ahead. Thanks in advance. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using the BariatricPal App

  5. Hopefully, you did not do too badly this year. You may have focused more on the turkey and salad, and less on the dinner rolls and butter, mashed potatoes and gravy, and pecan pie than in previous years. We didn’t all get through Thanksgiving unscathed, though. With so much delicious food, each dish more tempting than the next, and no end in sight, it is hard to stay in control. There may have been a few too many helpings, or a serving or two of foods that are not on your WLS diet. But, the damage is done, and it is time to move on. How are you planning to do so? Share your strategies for getting back on track, from forgiving yourself to throwing away the leftovers t…

  6. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and you are enjoying a bit of time to relax with family, catch up with friends, do a little holiday shopping, or get your home back in order! Maybe you’re even taking some time to cook some healthy leftovers with skinless turkey, or plan a few healthy meals for the coming week. Thanksgiving has plenty of opportunities for WLS triumphs. If this is your first Thanksgiving after WLS or thinking about WLS, it may have been far different than in previous years as you thought more about what you ate and how much. Even if you are a few years out from WLS, you are probably still pretty conscious about your Thanksgiving meal – no more …

  11. Not totally sure if this is the proper subforum, but it's about food so here goes. I'm on day 4 of my pre-op diet and it's going very well so far. I've resisted all cravings and have zero intention of giving in. It's usually not terribly difficult as I really cut out all sweets, most carbs, all alcohol and other icky things months ago. But today, I woke up craving a chocolate caramel turtle. The ones with the pecans. I've always clenched my jaw and carried tension there, so chewing things that are really chewy (caramel, those bit o' honey candies, etc.) always really satisfied this bizarre need to work my jaw. This lead to me binge eating foods like that to the po…

I first I tried the protein drink ISO PURE and in different flavors but I really didn't like them at all and found it to be a complete struggle to finish it. Then I tried Premier Protein which had very little iodine in it and I was doing good till the iodine started to build up in my system and I had an allergic reaction to it. Since then I've been drinking Pure Protein Natural Whey Protein the rich chocolate flavor but it taste horrible and I absolutely dread drinking it everyday. Whether you are pro-Trump, you are pro-Clinton, or you are abstaining from voting as an act of conscientious objection to this year’s election, I think we can all agree that November 9, the first day post-election, will be welcome. Then we can focus on other things, such as Thanksgiving! It’s coming up quickly, on November 24. You may have quite a few worries if this is your first Thanksgiving on the weight loss surgery journey, since your experience this year will be like any in the past. Weight loss surgery is all about the food! Okay, maybe not all about the food, but a good amount! You focus on food from the moment you first learning about the post-op diet and the diet you will follow for the rest of your life. You learn about portions, about which foods you should and should not eat, and about hunger, fullness, head hunger. Your diet post-op is far different than what you may have eaten in the years leading up to surgery. You may not have known which foods are right to eat. Maybe you did not know that Protein can be satisfying, or the exact size of a proper portion, or that you were doing yourself more damage than eating fried chicken or pizza when y…

  23. We currently sell one-dimensional Livliga portion plates as well as the portion8 plate in the BariatricPal Store. The LivLiga dinnerware is great to use at home as a replacement for regular dinnerware. We receive quite a bit of positive feedback as well as quite a few complaints about the Portion8 plates. Our customers feel they're a bit flimsy and they're not watertight, which causes liquids to leak from them. We're thinking about designing our own leak-proof, microwave safe, dishwasher safe, freezable and BPA-Free portion controlled lunch or bento box. Something you can use at home or take to work that will offer a tangible demonstration of how much food we as WLS pat…

Strangely enough, one of my fall favorites is a fruit: apples. They’re not all that glamorous, but they are always welcome. Yes, I miss the abundance of summer fruit in the stores, but crisp apples in the fall taste good on their own, with Peanut Butter, in Cereal and oatmeal…and you can’t beat stewed apples with cinnamon for a healthy dessert. Then there is winter squash and pumpkin – starchy, yes, but so satisfying for the number of calories. They are also packed with Fiber and potassium and Vitamin A, so it’s hard to f…

  26. If you are like most weight loss surgery patients, you plan your food. A lot. You try to know what you will be eating in the next few days, especially when things are pretty routine. Even if you do not formally log your food or write down menus, you probably spend a lot of time thinking about food, and have a good idea of what you’ll be eating in a day. …Except when something goes wrong. There is always that time when you need to stay late at work, or you need to run out the door to pick up a child and you forget to bring your snack, or you are so gung-ho about your workout that you bring your Water and running shoes, but not your Protein shake. Me too. I mean REALLY bad. Since the mid 80's. (I LOVED TAB!!!) It was the thing I would end up having the hardest time reconciling myself to- being without it. And then the moment! We have a SodaStream at home, and one of the flavors is Diet Coke. It's just the syrup. When trying to "get off" the Diet Coke habit, I would take a glass of cold Water, add in a little bit of the syrup, and voila! Had a Diet Coke taste fix! Eventually, I weaned it down to a few drops until it was pointless to even put it in there. But it helped. A lot. I will- on occasion- have a Diet Coke. Can't consume a lot, maybe 4-5 sips, but it's a treat, and I consider it as such. For …

Maybe it’s binge-watching a series on Netflix, or sneaking that forbidden (if you’re a WLS patient) bottle of beer and a buffalo wing on Sunday afternoons while watching the football game with friends, or leaving dirty dishes in the sink all weekend until you get to them Sunday night. There will still be some hot days this year, but the weather is changing. The cooler days and chilly evenings can trigger cravings for comforting, hearty food, but it does not need to come at the expense of your weight loss surgery diet. Soups, stew, and chili can be healthy and filling comfort foods. You can make big batches ahead of time and store the extras. I also like them because they are super flexible; you can change the recipe to make them with almost any ingredients you have on hand. I like them all, but I think stews are my favorite. They are less watery than Soup, and more comforting to me than chili. I like just a simple stew with leftover cooked chicken, …

But as convenient as Protein Bars will be, I am concerned that they might trigger my desire for sweets. Has anyone had an issue with this? Before being sleeved, I had to stay away from "bars" of any kind because they were a gateway to sugar-fueled binges ... but things ARE different now. I am not hungry/having cravings, and I know the Quest bars have very little sugar. This is a question mainly for post-op patients who are up to eating solid foods again after surgery, but anyone can weigh in! I am wondering about eating versus drinking your calories and nutrients. When it comes to Protein, do you prefer to chow down on foods such as chicken, fish, yogurt, cheese, and Protein Bars? Or do you opt for protein shakes and powders? If you are still using shakes and powders, is it because using them is the only way you can hit your protein goals, or because they are more convenient, or simply because you like them more?
