Hi All, I was sleeved in March and have really just began enjoying veggies again. My fave is making 'fried rice' out of riced cauliflower. I add eggs and meat to this but unfortunately it's just too light on protein still, given that I can only eat a small amount. I want to enjoy my veggies but it's hard because I know it should always be protein first but I don't always want to fill up on that. Any idea what I could add as a supplement to boost that protein content? Would unflavored protein powder be ok or would it make the texture weird? Your advice is MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

I noticed many of my friends on FaceBook and Instagram posting pics of the new Starbucks Unicorn Frappucino. The Connecticut Health Department pointed out of their official Facebook account that the Unicorn Frap contains more than double the suggested sugar intake by the American Heart Association. What are your thoughts on Starbucks promoting a drink which has excessive amounts of sugar and calories? Personally, I feel that it's irresponsible advertising. We are dealing with a growing Obesity problem around the entire world. Diabetes is running rampant. Am I overreacting? I didn't post my personal feelings because I'd never want anyone to feel that I'm judging …

I'm typically struggling to get my daily quota of 48 to 64 oz of liquid in each day and have a question...does a smoothie count as liquid? Silly question but I'm really curious. I sip a 12 oz smoothie each morning and so far have only been counting the 4 oz of almond milk I add but wonder if I could count the full 12 ozs.

Hey everyone! I love this app so much, it's really helped me and educated me beyond any research! One thing I haven't stumbled upon yet are "signs that tell you when you're full". I'm about to start my 2 week liquid diet and I was just curious some signs POST OP people have experienced - their body telling them they're full. I would appreciate everyone's feedback!

I'm 2 months post op and everything is going very well, today's weighting showed -20kg and I'm really happy. Now I was wondering, before surgery I loved a soup with some pasta or rice and some meat. I was wondering if I could still do this instead of a meal from time to time? Like some chunky soup and then add some shredded chicken. It will still have the protein I need, but it will have liquid and solids at the same time so I'm not sure...

Recently tried getting out of a weight-loss plateau by doing a ketogenic diet, which has ALWAYS worked for me in the past, both before and after my gastric sleeve surgery. I was, according to the urinalysis strips, in ketosis for 10 days, but my weight stayed within 1-2 pounds of where I started. Could it be an issue related to my gallbladder? About a year ago, I was having some pain after eating, and had some tests done—my family doc and my bariatric surgeon agreed that my gallbladder was no longer working properly (no stones, but apparently sludgy inside). They said it should be removed at some point before I develop stones. In the lead-up to my wedd…

I so disappointed! I spent $50.00 on unflavored isopure powder with the intention of mixing it with a chicken broth. It doesn't want to dissolve. The day before I bought a sampler pack of bone protein? and it dissolved fine. I guess I should have bought a big container of that but I went with Isopure (is whey protein not bone) since he didn't have any carbs at all. Does anybody know how to get this powder to dissolve in hot liquids? I've tried to stir it as soon as I put it in a liquid. I've tried mixing it in the single serve blender(watch out it expands in volume by 4). But it still has significant grit.

All right, put your stones down and get off your judgement seats! Please don't respond to this by informing me how awful fast food is, I already know it, but I still love it! I'm sorry, but good ol burgers, fries, tacos, burritos, nachos, I have always loved these horribly unhealthy fast foods. Now I am 5 days post op gastric bypass, and my cravings have been out of control the last two and a half weeks on this darn liquid diet! I still have a week and a half to go, but I can proudly say I have not cheated once! Which is why I am on here obsessing over bad fast food, because a burger sounds so dang amazing right now! So yes, fast food is horrible for you, moving on from …

Just wondering bc I am now allowed to eat anything. I have been trying to get lean proteins in first. I have these chicken wings that are already cooked and you just heat them but there is like 11 grams of fat in one serving! Everything else I eat has like 1.5-3 grams of fat per serving! It's just chicken,no breading,so I am wondering if anyone knows how many grams of fat we are supposed to have a day? Thanks in advance!!

Most of us change our diets dramatically after weight loss surgery. It is easier to focus on the junk foods we give up, but a lot of us end up discovering new, healthy foods that taste great and are fun to eat. They may even end up satisfying certain cravings in specific ways, such as having a chocolate protein bar instead of a chocolate bar, or crunching on bell peppers and yogurt dip instead of chips and ranch dip. These healthy foods may be foods you never thought to try before, or they could be foods you didn’t used to like but now taste better since your taste buds have gotten used to healthy choices. They could even be foods you used to like, but that yo…

The weight loss surgery diet is strict, but there is an entire industry of weight loss surgery products to help make your journey easier. There are reduced-calorie, low-carb, high-Protein versions of foods from Cereal and pancakes to Pasta and wraps. Also, of course, there are tons of convenient Meal Replacements and Protein shakes and bars to fight hunger at a moment’s notice, no matter where you are. Even though there a lot of weight loss and weight loss surgery foods, there may be some others that you would like to see. Is there a certain flavor of Protein Bar or Protein shake that you would love to try, or are there any high-carb, high-calorie off-limits f…

Hi, 8 weeks post op down 51 pounds.....thrilled with the loss. I have followed my pre/post diets to the letter. I'm at the stage where I am able to introduce anything into my diet. For some reason I have had the worst cravings the last 2 or 3 days. I haven't introduced anything except more protein variety....and spinach yesterday! Being real with myself that this lifestyle is not doable long term.....3 meals no snacks. Able to eat 1-2 ounces per meal. I'm trying to be as strong as I can as long as I can to get the most off. Please give me your best way to move beyond the intense cravings.

Hi guys! I need help. I travel a lot for work and don't know how to handle this. I don't want to tell the people I work with about my upcoming surgery. We eat out a lot and go to fancy dinners. I'm fine with learning to pack snacks and powders, but how should I handle group meals? I can't go to a fancy steakhouse, eat 2 bites of a starter and not get weird looks, nor can I skip out on these meals. Does anyone here have experience with this?

I’ve been thinking about commercials and advertising because of the Super Bowl, and I started wondering about your thoughts on food commercials and other ads. There’s a good chance you’ve been noticing and possibly been influenced by food ads for years or your entire life. Now that you’ve had weight loss surgery or are thinking about it, you are sure to notice the abundance of food ads everywhere – on TV, on billboards, online, on the radio, and anywhere else you turn. They’re unavoidable! You’ve probably also noticed that most of them are for unhealthy foods: candy bars, chips, hamburger and pizza restaurants, and frozen pizzas, for example. They’re often misleading – …

Getting enough Protein is a top focus for most bariatric surgery patients, but getting enough fluids is just as important, if not more so. If you get severely dehydrated, you can land in the emergency room – and this is more common than you might think among post-op patients! Being slightly dehydrated can still be harmful, even if it is not life-threatening. It can delay healing after weight loss surgery. It can also make weight loss more difficult by draining you of energy. Still, it’s not always easy to hit your 64 ounces a day after surgery, even if you know how important it is. Your tastes may change and you might not like the taste of Water or flavored water. You…

Carbs often get the blame for weight gain and for plateaus. There is good reason for that, since some of the highest-calorie, lowest-nutrient foods are carb-heavy. White bread, crackers, Pasta, chips, and rice are all packed with starches, while soft drinks, ice cream, cakes, Cookies, and jam are laden with sugar. Your diet plan after weight loss surgery likely limits carbs, but different plans and patients approach the limits in different ways. Some plans suggest counting carbs, while others simply suggest cutting back on low-nutrient carbs while including moderate portions of higher-nutrient fare, such as oatmeal and other whole-grain cereals, whole-grain bread, sweet…

It won't let me end my day, says I need to eat more. Is there any place in the settings that I'm not finding where I can indicate I had surgery, this isn't a mistake, etc? Super Bowl LI will be on Sunday, February 5. Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest day of the year for pizza delivery, and Americans eat nearly infinite amounts of chicken wings, chips, and beer not to mention dips, Cookies, and fatty meats. The day is even the second biggest eating day of the year after Thanksgiving. That sure does not bode well for weight loss surgery patients! But you can cope. How are you planning to get through Super Bowl Sunday without doing diet damage? If you are going to a friend’s house, are you going to bring your own Protein Snacks? Are you going to depend on sipping ice Water? Will you host your own party and serve some veggies, fruit, nuts, and…

Most surgeons and nutritionists suggest quitting alcohol after weight loss surgery for many reasons. It has empty calories, so it can throw off your weight loss. It lowers your inhibition as it relaxes you, so you are more likely to eat too much or choose high-calorie foods while you are drinking. It shakes up your blood sugar, so it can change your hunger levels. It’s not safe to drink on an empty stomach, so you need to break one of the basic rules of the weight loss surgery diet to separate fluids from soli foods. Weight loss surgery patients, especially gastric sleeve patients, are affected more quickly by alcohol. Weight loss surgery patients run a high risk of ov…

Hi, all! I am almost 5 months out from gastric sleeve, and I'm experiencing my first stall. I am trying not to get too concerned about it, as I knew it would happen at some point. However, I think part of the problem might be that I am eating too many carbs in the way of crackers. They seem innocuous enough: Mini Thin Edamame Rice Crackers (38 crackers = 120 calories, 3g Protein, 0 sugar) and Pistachio-Pomegranate Crisps (11 crisps for 90 calories, 2 g. protein, 8 g. sugar), both from Trader Joes. When I start eating them, I feel like I can't stop. And then I keep thinking about them. I usually eat them with some protein, but then I go back for more. Are crackers or s…

I have to post this. I love turkey. For a few years I tried the deep fried turkey and it turned out ok and I was glad to have the oven free. Then something changed. I checked my thermometer, I lowered my time, I tried different brands of oil and turkeys and they just turned out cruddy. One of my employees bought an Orion 101 cooker and I was intrigued. For $140 I bought one. It is essentially a charcoal fired outdoor convection oven. The food chamber never has combustion in it so there isn't anything odd to the flavor from charcoal or lighter Fluid. I add wood chips inside of the chamber so the turkey is smoked. The turkey also drips into a tray inside and the drippings …

I am freaking a little, so I'm reaching out to see if anyone else has done this and what effects they felt or otherwise experienced. I have gotten into making customized natural Protein shakes with a lot of different ingredients. One such ingredient is CINNAMON...1 TABLESPOON of it. I tried it for the first time this morning, and then thought that maybe that was too much, so I looked it up. OMG...most recipes call for like a 1/4 teaspoon and there are articles of cinnamon actually causing liver damage. I know I have only done this once, but clearly I wouldn't want to damage my liver and I am wondering if others in the WLS community have experience with consuming too …

When I do cook, I make healthy dishes and can cook smaller portions, leaving less leftovers, but when we go out there is so much left over. I separate my food as soon as it arrives. food gifts are among the most common gifts to give. They are easy, they can be elegant, and they are often very much appreciated. Not so much when you are on a weight loss surgery diet, though! Those fruit cakes from exclusive bakeries, homemade fudge and Christmas Cookies, hand-picked boxes of chocolate truffles, and gift baskets with fancy jams and crackers don’t fit very well into your diet. Did you get any food gifts this year? What did you receive, and did you handle it? Were you able to enjoy any of the food? Did you give it away? Share your strategy!

I just bought all of this, in one trip, at a gas station, and I planned to eat every bit of it. So, I did everything right. I've worked 60-80-120 plus hour work weeks for over a decade, and before that, slightly less, as I was still a child. I have two successful businesses, multiple degrees, and this fall I got a full scholarship to law school. Ever since I was a kid, all I wanted to do was go to law school, but since I've been entirely on my own since I was 18, clearly that was never happening. I spent almost all of my 20's working super hard and yo-yo dieting, until I was so fat I had to have 80% of my stomach cut out. I then spent 18 months getting to goal w…

I thought I'ld start a thread asking for recipes for the puree stage that you couldn't have survived without. I started this stage yesterday and spent a good hour scrolling thru posts offering ideas before I went grocery shopping. I thank God for someone suggesting Hormel Chilis. They had turkey, beef and one can left of chicken and white bean. Had the chicken just now-heated about 2/3 cup in microwave. Put in Magic Bullet to puree. It looked weird but boy was it tasty! First thing I've eaten in about 5 weeks that satisfied my taste buds! I could only eat about 1/4 cup, so next time I know to heat up only 1/4 cup at a time until I can get more down. For dinner, I'm maki…

It seems like everything gets out of whack around holiday time. There is too much food everywhere. The food is too high in sugar and fat. The food is too delicious to pass up. There is too much pressure to eat it. Furthermore, there can be so much stress that your good intentions are too much to keep up. You may not have enough time or energy to work out as you normally do, or to cook the healthy meals you know you need. In short, it’s hard to lose weight this time of year! So, do you change your weight loss goals for the holidays? Sometimes, it makes sense to change your goals to maintaining your current weight loss instead of reaching for more. For other people, i…

I absolutely LOATHE artificial sweeteners! I will not eat or drink anything with them in it. (They give me nasty headaches and taste really bad to me). Has any one had success with eliminating these out of the pre/post op diets? People are eating sugar free jello/puddings, Crystal Light, etc. If I want something sweet, would it be ok to replace with a 1/2 teas of honey or agave syrup or something??? If not, I'll forego anything sweet if I have to.

Hey everyone. Have been reading BP for a couple of months now, but this is my first post. Still early in the process-have attended the required info session and am awaiting my consult. I'm on the smaller side of eligibility with BMI of 38 and severe obstructive sleep apnea. Original thought was VSG but will trust in surgeon's advice. At any rate, as I go through all the pros and cons of this process in my head, I feel like i can take on and handle just about everything, but one glaring issue pops up....food and drink. I've spent most of my life with a love for great food and drink. I run the gamut on food from high end to low, ethnic to not and on drink all acros…

Whether you Celebrate Christmas, Hanukah, New Year’s, another holiday, or no official winter holiday…you are almost certain to find yourself at a holiday party, special lunch or dinner, or within reach of some tempting, delicious food. How do you handle it? Do you bring your own healthy options? For example, you could always be sure to bring a green salad with some chicken, Beans, or other Protein to parties and potlucks, or you could bring your own Protein Bar or some nuts or cheese to nibble on while others are hitting the fried and battered appetizers. Also, do you save “room” for a treat? There are some holiday foods that you might not want to pass up because yo…
