Hi everybody! Sooo I'm 2 weeks post op from band to RNY. My doc usually just does 2 week leaves. I had that horrendous band out, plus the RNY. I don't think I can go back to work yet. I kind of feel like I'm being selfish but there are 2 other co-workers who had it done & they took of 4-6 weeks! I'm a 911 dispatch supervisor and we work 12 hr shifts. We do police, fire and medical. Granted it's sedentary but I have to be alert & on point so that I can make good, smart decisions and I'm like... half a sandwich short of a picnic right now! I'm feeling good. Still pain where the stupid band was and just overall fatigue. I'm having them extend my fmla another we…

Was finally approved for a revision from band to bypass!!! I'm excited. EXCEPT...I'm getting married in December and I already have my dress (which is in the middle of being altered), I won't be able to eat (I probably won't want to anyway from the stress) and I'm afraid that I might be sick if I get it beforehand. The earliest is at the end of September, wedding date is December 5. Also, if I weight too long then I might lose my approval. My questions is, how long did it take after surgery for you to feel "normal" and not sick? Thoughts? (is this the right forum to post on?) Thank you!!

Hello everyone! This is my first post on here since I just discovered this group a few days ago. I'm writing here because I'm not really sure where or whom to turn to at this point. I'm scheduled for surgery on 9/10/15. I've been waiting for this day forever. I went through the process of diet and doctors appointments twice before and ended up having to switch insurance. This time, however, it all finally worked out. Everything was going great and I was really positive about things until I had an appointment with the psychologist (per insurance rules) and that changed things for me. At one point in our conversation, she turned to me and stated, "You do know you can die…

Soo, my surgery is 9/10. Super nervous. I have been on the liver shrink for a week and haven't lost any weight. I haven't cheated at all. I'm worried that if I don't lose weight my liver won't "shrink". Anyone done the pre-op diet and not lost weight? My doc's diet: Protein shake/bar for Breakfast, 1/2 cup fruit snack, protein shake/bar lunch, 1/2 cup fruit snack, and 3oz. lean protein veggie 2 slices 45calorie bread, and last snack of 1/2 cup fruit.

Today is my 3 weeks out. I've lost 25lbs in the first 2 weeks. This 3rd week, stayed exactly the same? Why... Secondly, I'm on puree now. Do I HAVE to eat 4 tablespoon meals 4-5 times a day??? Do I have to? Or can I just have 1 or 2 meals and continue with my shakes if I feel like it that day? Thank you for your thoughts and help : )

Hi I'm band to bypass revision. I have to go through another six month of appointments before I can have it done. Did anyone else have to go through this? I should be done with all the preop appts by the end of August . I was hoping I didn't have to go through the appointments but the surgeon said it mandatory for insurance purposes even with blue cross. I had my band put in on jan 2006, then was revised in March of 2013 for a slipped band. I initially lost about 70 pounds. Then slowly I regained all of the weight back. Can't wait to get this surgery lots of joint pains and pre diabetic. I have only one question. How long after surgery can I go back to an office job?

I have yet to read anything from anyone regarding the "bad habits". I was a smoker all my life and quit. My surgery is next month. I am wondering if anyone started smoking after your surgery and if so what were the results? I am not saying I would resume smoking cigarettes but I am saying I find myself thinking that sometimes. Any help with this would be appreciated

Hello, I was scheduled for my Gastric Bypass on August 13th. Everything was on track and I made it into the OR for the surgery to begin. Next thing I know I'm in the recovery room and my surgeon tells me they could not proceed because of the condition of my liver. Apparently my fatty liver disease turned into Cirrhosis and my surgeon felt he could not proceed. He said that he would have proceeded with a gastric sleeve instead but we had not discussed that so he of course could not proceed. They did a biopsy on my liver and determined it was early stage cirrhosis and no cancer thank goodness. My hepatologist suggested a I get a second opinion on weather the bypass is …

Antibiotics are among the most frequently prescribed medications in modern medicine. Antibiotics cure disease by killing or injuring bacteria. After surgery antibiotics may be used to preclude wound infection. But there is a downside to the use of antibiotics. Antibiotics kill not only the harmful bacteria but also the helpful or good bacteria in the digestive system that keep our gut healthy. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that restore these lost good bacteria into our digestive system (in the intestines). Commonly probiotics are recommended after gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery to restore our gut bacteria. When I went to store searching for pro…

I had my one week f/u with the surgeon today and got the green light to move on to full liquids. My BP was through the roof, but I realized I have forgotten to take my metoprolol since getting home (oops). He said that the pain should continue to reduce over the next couple of weeks and otherwise everything looks good. I've lost 6lbs since surgery last Monday which makes me so happy! He told me to move forward with full liquids too. In anticipation of my appointment I had an Isopure this morning and then for dinner tonight a protein shake so I actually got 60g in today with no nausea! I was worried about nausea after reading some of the posts when people added their prote…

I've still got some good quality jeans, sweaters, etc., from when I successfully lost 90 pounds with the lap-band, but I have to admit that I intentionally bought some smaller shirts yesterday, even though I can't fit into them yet (my revision to RNY is on August 24th). My justification is that I live in Miami, and it's always short-sleeve weather, but the stores don't realize that. They're going to start bringing in longer-sleeve shirts soon, so I needed to go ahead and get some shirts that I'll be able to wear later without dying of heat stroke. So, since they were on sale, I went ahead and picked up a few. Not many, since I still have some old stuff to pick through…

This is for thise who had band removed...then had to wait for bypass revision. Laparoscopic-gastric-bypass-surgery.html How many incisions do they do for bypass? Do they use the same incision site (that they used for port removal) again for bypass? If so.....Has anyone had any difficulty with incisions healing, after they used the port incision again? I understand that when they use the same incision sites, that the tissue and muscle can become weaker and healing might be a problem. Please share any info. Thanks!

Hi All, I'm new to BariatricPal and love what I've read so far. I am a North American living in South America and it has been an amazingly smooth process. I had my first consultation with my surgeon in May and here I am a handful of months later with surgery a few short sleeps away! Thanking you all in advance for your support, advice, guidance and sense of humour! Wish me luck, Foxy!

Anyone start worrying as you're headed into the final stretch before surgery, whether or not you have the right surgeon and office? There are only two where I live and I've heard horrible things about the other one, but after my pre-op appointment, I'm beginning to worry that the one I chose might not be right for me. It's little things like not seeing the surgeon again for a whole year after surgery ( see the NUT and nurse practitioner every three months), meeting the NP and finding her a bit terse, going into surgery feeling like I don't have my after care questions answered. (I know they'll tell me in the hospital - I hope- but how together am I going to be at that ti…

If you have been following me you know that I was waiting for a surgery date. I got a call on August 27-and have a set date! October 12 at 1 p.m, and I have to be at the hospital by 11 a.m that morning. Since I've been having so many issues with this clinic, when I told my dad, he said that I needed to call them and double check that this is scheduled for the Bypass and not the Gastric Sleeve. When I called and spoke with the receptionist, she said that she saw I was scheduled for the gastric sleeve surgery, which she said right away "that's not right is it?" and I told her no that it's not, and that I spoke with a nurse yesterday who put a note on my account that said I …

Date of surgery was April 21. Now, one month out, here are the results thus far -- After 40+ years of dieting and failures on my health, I am absolutely shocked that gastric bypass has produced such results in one month. Results: 1. Down 45 pounds 2. Gone from a 54 inch waist to a 48 inch waist 3. Went into surgery on 5 diabetes meds, now on a very small dose of one med. 4. Went into surgery after a decade of swollen legs and feet, from edema. Now, edema is 80% better and getting much better every day. 5. Went into surgery with a real hassle -- urge incontinence. This means that it got almost impossible to keep from urinating when the sudden urge occurs. I was c…

I am day 3 post op, and I am having pain in my right upper side! It now even hurts when I press on it when two days ago it did not! I am fine if I don't move but as soon as I go to get up or move, it's quite painful! Is this normal?!? I feel like my anxiety is starting to build over this like did my bowel get twisted or did the stitches internally rip??? I'm going to call the doctors office first thing in the morning but I am reaching out to see if anyone else has this pain and is ok? Oh man I hope I'm ok?? I see so many people who have had little to no pain after surgery and thought I would be the same I tend to have a high tolerance to pain but idk... This is painful

My husband had his surgery on August 24th and has been doing very well; even better than I did my first week. Early this morning though he got really dizzy, started to pass out and then fell. He was clammy and cold. His temperature was 97 at 4:30am and 96.8 at 9:30. After sleeping for a bit longer, he wasn't feeling dizzy anymore. He said he doesn't think he hit his stomach and has been getting plenty of fluids, but I am concerned about possible infections as the temperature may indicate that. At what point should he go get checked out at urgent care?

I know this may seem like a silly thing to be concerned with, but I can't stop thinking about it. So I know with bypass our old stomach gets cut/stapled at the top and stays connected at the bottom to the small intestine. But since it's only connected on one side does it flop around? Or do the other organs keep it snug in place? I hope my question makes sense! Thanks!

I hope I'm not re-inventing the wheel here, but I found a nice thread in the Gastric sleeve forum by accident, of only ladies over 50 years old. I have looked for something similar here for us bypass patients as well but didn't see one. If this is a duplicate please point me in the right direction. I'm almost 53, still pre-op but hopefully on track to have surgery in June. I will have my 3rd of 3 nutritionist visits in 2 more weeks, have my psych eval scheduled in 2 weeks and then they'll submit, then schedule the EGD and then surgery. I've been overweight ever since having my first child 22 years ago, gaining too much with each pregnancy and then not losing all of …

A study published in JAMA concludes weight-loss surgery better than diet and exercise in treating type 2 diabetes. In the trial, 61 obese adults with diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two surgical procedures or intensive lifestyle intervention and followed for three years. Forty percent of those who had received a gastric bypass procedure and 29% who received a gastric band were considered in remission from diabetes and no longer needed to take medication after three years. In comparison, no one in the group who received intensive lifestyle intervention resolved their diabetes. http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/07/02/weight-loss-surgery-better-than-diet-and-e…

So I am almost two weeks post op and it has definitely been an experience. I am getting crazy head hunger and going through a lot of emotions . Anyways one thing that I have been noticing is that I feel tired all the time although I haven't been really active . Despite my weight I have always been an active person . I am one of those people who have a million things going on at once. Am I expecting to much from my body to soon? So I am 4 weeks post op. (down 28 lbs) and I'm just now starting to get sick from certain foods. I just feel as if something is stuck, I kind of feel phlegmy and then get sick. After that I'm better but don't try eating for several hours after. Is what I'm experiencing 'dumping' or 'frothing'? Also when did everyone experience dumping for the first time and from what?

Hello everyone . So I had my surgery on August 18th. Everything went ok and now I am in the purée stage . My question is has anyone ever experience not feeling full with the recommended ounces in the purée stage . For example, I am only suppose to eat 4 ounces of yogurt and I feel like I can def eat more then that . Of course I do not eat more because I do not want to jeopardize this journey . I am now allowed to eat eg whites which I did for the first time yesterday . My dietician told me that I can have two egg whites . Had them yesterday and didn't feel full at all. After reading some post in this site it seems like people are getting full quickly and I feel like I don…

I happen to run across this on my surgeon's website and wanted to share. This is for people who have had weight regain after bypass. It appears that this is less invasive than another revision surgery, but can reduce the size of pouch and outlet. Hopefully, we all will have ZERO problems forever and be compliant, and never have to go this route, but... it can happen and we need to know what options are out there for help if it does. Read on There is also a great animation video on the right to see how it can fix this problem. http://apolloendo.com/procedures/outlet-pouch-reduction/

There may be a new non-caloric sugar substitute showing up in stores in a couple years. It is called allulose (aka psicose). This is a natural sugar and apparently the company Tate & Lyle have figured out how to make the produce in large quantities. When consumed allulose is excreted in the urine before it reaches the bowels, therefore avoiding the problem caused by other sugar substitutes that get to the large intestine where it is fermented by bacteria.

I hag my surgery 8/19 and just released to go home 8/22. My hospital experience was horrible. The post op nurse withheld all fluids and refused to activate my pain pump saying I didn't need it. We demanded she check with the surgeon and she said she did and he said no. Finally the charge nurse made her give me ice chips, but only getting one dose of pain meds every 4 hours I never got my pain under control. The surgeon came in the next day and was FURIOUS that she went against orders and she was removed immediately. Apparently she never even asked him about the pain meds or fluids. I got apologies from director of nursing, the hospital patient advocate and the surgeon, w…

Hi all! I am 6 months out and live in the greater Boston area. I'm wondering if there is anyone in the greater Boston area who can recommend an Ob/Gyn who has worked with post-RNY patients. Disclaimer - I do NOT plan to get pregnant (if at all) for another year or so, based on guidance from my bariatric surgeon, but I want to plan ahead and do some research re: informed Ob practices so that I can discuss options with the practice. Any tips/recommendations/suggestions are much appreciated!

I had a few questions about WLS. The pro's I know of but I am just afraid of the cons, also if I should or shouldn't go through with the process of talking with doctor, getting a referral and approval and surgery date etc. I haven't seen a PCP doctor in a long time, and because of Medi-Cal insurance I am unable to even go to mine because he is not accepting New Patient appts, so I have had no Diabetes, High Cholesterol, etc Blood Work done ever. Has anyone used these Biotin chews before or after bypass? If so, will they absorb? How well do they work ? I understand that it takes awhile for Biotin to get into your system. I want to prevent hair loss if possible. I have pretty thick hair ,but would like to keep it that way after bypass. I bought these at Walgreens because they were on sale and they have 5000 mcg of Biotin. They are gluten free. Below is picture of front and back with nutrition info. I tried one already. It was a pleasant berry flavor. They come 30 in a package. I paid $6.99. Looking to hear from others about what you use.
