  2. Started by Sansa,

I came across this article that suggests that Jesse Jackson Jr's gastrointestinal and depression problems may have been caused by a duodenal switch. The description of a duodenal switch makes it seems as though it is the same thing as a sleeve that also bypasses a lot of the intestines which results in malabsorption. The articles go on to say that Jr may have developed bipolar disorder as a result of malnutrition. http://chicagotonigh...witch-explained http://illinoisrevie...r-disorder.html If true then this is yet another reason why getting just a sleeve is better than getting the duodenal switch or bypass. The idea of bypassing the intestines is a scary thought…

After having surgery last month I am on track after having a big stall and a bit of adjustment to my new lifestyle. I have been thinking in the past few weeks that I really want to become a police officer. But am I hoping for too much? Is it even possible to go from where I am now, 356 lbs already down from a year ago when I was 420 lbs, to a weight where I would even be accepted into the police department? The only thing I can think of is to keep on with my good eating habits and maybe start going to a personal trainer to get me in shape. I know it will be at least a year before I could even think about trying out for the police force..... But am I hoping for too much…

I am 4.5 weeks post op and my right side is really hurting me. It feels like someone has kicked me in the ribs. I've also been having trouble eating even 1/4 of a cup of food (as my nut says I should be able to eat now). Has anyone else had this experience?

I am getting really excited for surgery and am hoping to lose 3 more before the big day! The doctor said i can expect to lose about 60 percent of ebw with the sleeve....does that include the pre op diet loss. Do people tend to lose more in their first few weeks post surgery and anyone know where i can find info or research studies that show or prove the 60 percent Average. I need to lose 80 pounds ro fall within ibw and was really hoping to reach that. I am not going to limit myself but also dont want to be se…

O happy to find this page. As some of you mentioned I wasn't seeing the higher weights so thinking I'm the only one! I had my surgery may 23rd. My hw 465 sw 435 and now 3 months later im 374. Total of 91. Have so much more to go! We will get there. This past month I haven't lost anything. I keep hovering between 376 and 373. Hopefully it will start up again.

  14. Started by 2bHotGirl,

Anyone having issues losing more after revision to sleeve? I gained while waiting for the surgery and haven't had much success losing since. I lost 90 lbs with the band but gained 25 lbs in between surgeries. Now the weight is being stubborn and doesn't want to go away. I do about 45 mins cardio each day.

  15. Started by Jammy,

I'm curious. Do you still find yourself dieting after the surgery or do you just eat less? Initially when I had my band surgery, I was pretty strict with my diet, but after I had problems with it, I definitely got more lax about the things I ate. I would lean on "slider foods" when my band was being super tight and fussy. I'm curious if you find that you're sticking to a strict regemin of eating properly, or dieting (I know that might sound crazy, but many bandsters I knew still followed weight watchers, atkins, etc), or is the restricted volume all you find that you need to do to lose? Yes, I know the recommendations by the docs, I'm just curious to hear from people…

  17. I couldn't figure out the flood of compliments this week. People say things like: "You are shrinking before my eyes" "You are disappearing" etc. I keep losing and regaining the same pound. This has gone on for weeks. 14s were a little lose and 12s fit better. Lo and behold, tonight I slipped into a size 10. I know you lose inches sometimes while not losing pounds, but this is weird.

So I threw up for the first time since being sleeved today. I have no one to blame but myself. I was eating salmon and got that restriction feeling. It was subtle, but it was there. I only had a couple of tiny bites left on the plate so I finished them. BAD IDEA! It is so hard mentally to get used to the idea of wasting food or not "cleaning" the plate. I started salivating like crazy and before I knew it I grabbed a trash barrel and started throwing up the entire contents of my little tummy. As I'm staring down the barrel, the only thought going through my mind was, "damn, there goes all that protein." lol. Anyway, I share this as a warning to all newly sleeved and soon …

I just found out I was approved for surgery late Friday afternoon in the midst of running errands, projects and family stuff. Never had that OMG can't believe it. I have told a few friends, family. No one today to share where I am with this, so I came here. Not sure why I feel alone in this journey tonight. I did battle a cold this weekend. But just feeling blah. Trying to figure out how to rebuild my energy for my preop diet, planning for my new life. Once I confirm time off for this at work I will feel better. Glad I have u guys, and I am not alone. My wife is very supportive, but does not get all of this.... All the time.

  21. It took me a lot to write out that title. I'm 20 years old and I've never had a boyfriend. Lots of people tell me, "oh you just need to have more confidence." Yeah, well I used to have confidence until I couldn't get a boyfriend. UGH. People tell me differently, but I'm so tired of never having a relationship. You may think this thread is stupid, but it's a valid problem that I have with myself. Don't tell me that I just need to have patience ugh. It may be selfish, but I want people to think I'm attractive. I know that people like my face, but that's not the full me. I want to get double-takes from people that I actually find attractive. I want to have a MUT…

78 days and counting - I'll be sleeved on Nov 9! 11.5 weeks from today... I have to do one week of pre-op diet (yuck - three Protein shakes per day), and then my surgeon's post op is Clear liquids for first two days, protein starting on day 3, and real food starting after 3 weeks. In the mean time, in the interest of being able to fit in the clothes I currently own, I'm trying to follow my version of low carb/clean(ish) eating - meat, nuts/seeds, dairy, veggies, and fruit. I just CANNOT gain any more weight. I cannot! I figured I've been doing low carb since Monday and have to do one week or pre-op, so that means 11 weeks of 'dieting' before the sleeve. I can do any…

So, I'm sure that the ladies have this problem, but more so... So now that I've lost 120 lbs, I'm looking and feeling SO much better, but I have some... trouble spots. Loose skin. Unlike the ladies, I have the option of bulking up to give my skin new adhesion points; if I can bulk up enough, I may be able to avoid plastic surgery. So I have loose skin in three places. On my tummy. Fortunately, not much. Barely enough to pinch. I can live with this, and if not, I'll get plastics. On my inner thighs. THIS, I can fix, by bulking my legs up to tree-trunk levels. I'm working on this with heavy weight squats/leg presses/extensions/leg curls. It'll take time, but…

I was sleeved 10th May 2012 & have been lucky enough to lose 30kg so far, I have a question for the longer term sleeves say 3 months sleeved & longer. My question is do you ever get hungry? I'm hungry all of the time infact I've felt hunger since day 1 of the procedure. The upside though is I still get full really easily, the other upside is that my weight loss has now slowed down to about a 1kg loss a fortnight. I only needed to lose 40kg preop so I figure being 10kg out with a very steady loss is a good thing. I now eat whatever I want just small amounts and I've also been on the grog a few times. Life's awesome!!

  31. God bless insurance out of pocket maximums. I know many of you are self pay and I think about all the years I was without any health insurance and I know I could never have been as strong or dedicated as you and save the money to pay for any of this on my own, it shames me to know how much has been spent on my surgery and post-op care already. My out of pocket was supposed to be around $12-1500.00 for food and miscellaneous fees and tests that weren't covered. So far I've cleared my flex spending account of $3500.00 and pulled another grand from my 401k just to cover the meds and all the food and supplements i've tried. A complication with my last PICC line left me with…

So, how are we? Anyone have infections/leaks/worries? What are you allowed to eat at this point? or not? I am on full liquids until another two weeks (day 22 I can have soft food).....I am tired of Soup already!!!

  33. I ended up staying in the hospital since monday and made it hope yesterday due to low blood pressure. Today was my first 24 hrs on the post-op diet. Got down 2 shakes and some jello but that is about it. I also have a gas bubble in my chest that just might be glenda the good witch in there...anyone else feeling this? Since the surgery, I noticed what my biggest problem was/ is with food... I eat too fast. I noticed I tend to do it more around my kids. I have my sister as support and today she was keeping an eye on me and was saying, "slow down , chew". Even though I didn't eat a big amount , the fast eating is what is causing me discomfort. I'm just happy I'm more aware now.

Hello I'm new and had a question about BMI that I was hopping to get help with. I have BCBS of California and was wondering if they required your BMI to be above 40 for a documented length of time? My have no other health conditions and my BMI has only recently been documented over 40 and my concern is they are goring to make we wait for a year or more before I could have surgery. I've been over 35 for 8 years. Thank you

I had a surgery date of September 17. Today my date was robbed from me! Lol. The person who booked it wasn't authorized to confirm that date with me soooo.... My new date is Sept 24. Feeling bummed for a couple reasons. I really wanted to book it on the 17th as it is the Jewish holiday and being that I live in NYC, this means classes are canceled and I could avoid missing too much school, also the parking rules here will be suspended then and I wouldn't have to worry about tickets or getting towed. It was just a good date! So BOOOO to the girl who teased me with Sept 17. You made me very sad today. Back to the planning board. Ugh.

I've noticed that although there are a lot of us online at the same time, noone seems to use the chat rooms. Personally, I think it would be great to talk to some fellow sleevers in real time rather than reading threads and replying all day. I do think these threads and topics are extremely helpful, and I love coming on here (in fact, it's becoming an addiction! LOL) but instant responses to some general thoughts and questions would be cool. Any thoughts on this?

I am so glad that I found this site now that I have finally decided on the sleeve. I have been thinking about WLS for a few years and in the past 3 months have seriously considered the Sleeve. SOOO I started my journey with my PCP letting him know this is what I have decided to do. Now I have the nutrition class on 08/21 then meet the surgeon on 08/23 then psych evaluation on 08/27. I was told during my initial conversation with the coordinator at the surgeon's office that once I get my psych evaluation done then we will set a date. This seems to be going REALLY fast. I have read where it takes most people at least 2 months for the process and other much longer. It…

My poor husband is super nervous about surgery, and I have been trying to calm his nerves. We would like to know how long I will be back in surgery? I figure about an hour, but I was not sure. I had my first band put in August 2006. Lost 88 pounds and did wonderful until it slipped. I had my second band put in February 2008 and never found the "sweet spot", gained 40+ pounds back. Finally, dragged myself into the doctors office January 2012 and told him I had enough take it out I wanted the sleeve. Sleeved August 8, 2012 I went for my one week postop visit today. I am acting exactly like a sleeve patient being miserable the first week or so. He wasn't happy at how weak I was and told me to drink fruit juice or yogurt smoothie to get sugar into me. He was surprised I was able to drink a Protein drink. He said I looked a lot better compared to the hospital.…

I was pleased to find this page, I'm glad you're here! I'm reminded just from joining this site what an ongoing process "coming out" can be. Being asked, "Are you married" when chatting on here always results in the inevitable thoughts about whether this is the time/place to add, "to a woman" to the "Yes, I am married" answer. Oh well, so far so good, no one has run screaming from the chat room! I just had surgery about 2 weeks ago and so far so good. The decision put a little stress on my relationship just because it was scary and stressful but thankfully post-op wifey is much more on board. so, let's hear the funniest response to your weight loss. For me, it was my 11 year old nephew. I hadn't seen him in a long time, and, when he found out that I had lost 100 pounds, his response was 'he's lost 100 POUNDS!?!?!? I wonder if he's still funny?' When I finally got to see him the next week, I told him that I was sorry, but all of my funny melted off. So, what's yours?

I'm having such a difficult time with clothes right now. I'm in between sizes and just know in my heart that I will make it to the smaller size next month. So, for motivation today I went to a normal clothing store (not plus) in the mall. I just wanted to shop by myself and have some self discovery because I'm feeling crappy about myself (stalled for 2 weeks), clothes I have are too big, next size down is a little snug. I digress, anyway this pushy sales clerk comes over and starts pulling clothes for me to try. She eyes me up and down and starts pulling sizes. I figured I wasn't getting away from her unless I left the store and she must know what she's doing since sh…

  49. I am not afraid of not being known as the fat girl anymore, that is for sure! But I feel like I am losing the part of my identity that goes along with food. I have always been the kind of person that will go out to dinner at the drop of a hat with friends or family, will hit up the buffet and try all sorts of new and unique food. I know that these behaviors are the thing that helped me get the size that I was, but part of me is sad to give up all of these things that I used to do. I eat a lot healthier now, and in far smaller quantities as well. We went to the Taste of Calgary festival this past weekend, and I chose the healthier options there, and would eat a bit or tw…
