Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums

Gastric sleeve (VSG) support. Ask about the procedure, the sleeve diet, weight loss results, recovery, and complications.

  1. Started by AJKMMC15,

Looking for local support groups... I was sleeved on 3/16/16 by Doctor Laura July at Unity in Fridley. 5 days post op and doing great.

  2. So, I had sleeve surgery in July this year (2022). I didn't even think about the fact that they use titanium staples. I've had MRIs before, but they were all pre-surgery. I asked a bariatric nurse as well as the MRI scheduler if my sleeve surgery would cause issues with my MRI. The bariatric nurse said no because titanium staples are not magnetic. I also asked the MRI scheduler and she asked a supervisor and they said no, people with stuff like titanium hips have MRIs and they are fine. She said she'd put in a note for the radiologist stating that I have titanium staples and that I can ask the radiologist when I'm there, too...just to make sure. I'm scared that I'll g…

I'm 6 days into my 2 week pre-op diet. Surgery is the 7th. I didn't expect the pre-op diet to be so difficult. The first 4 days were absolutely horrible and had me rethinking everything. It's tolerable now. But my question is since starting it, I've had heartburn, indigestion, burping, and nausea. Anyone else experience this? The hunger pains were terrible the first few days but have gotten better but definitely still there. I'm getting about 550-700 calories a day as required with the diet guidelines. I had a few days where I felt sorry for myself because I couldn't have the food my family is eating (I still have to feed hubby and 4 kiddos) but told myself that is same …

Good morning! My surgery date is on the 21st and I’m trying to be prepared. I have all my Premiere Protein shakes. For water can we use crystal light? I also bought Premier protein bottles of water? Does anyone use collagen in their water? I take regularly now and it has protein so wonder if it’s an option to add PO. Thank you for any feedback it’s a week and I feel like everything is running through my head to be prepared. Any PO additional things you know of that maybe I’m just forgetting. Thank you! Good luck on your journey !

  6. Started by SashaS,

Hello! My name is Sasha. I was sleeved in 2016 and since my surgeon has retired. I lost my binder moving states and I need some help. Are we allowed to take antibiotics? I am suffering from a UTI and have been taking Uricalm. It’s helping but I might go to urgent care today. I’m so cautious trying new meds without a bariatric surgeon telling me it’s okay. Please let me know your experiences with antibiotics post surgery! Thank you!

  8. Started by LadiiReignBeau,

I recently got sleeved on March 28th and currently struggling with food options. I want to be successful on this journey but today is my first day back at work and I feel down! I drive over the road and go home rarely. My only options for food are at truck stops and service plazas. These places offer only fast food options like McDonald's, Popeyes, Arby's, Subway and many other no good options... Does any one have any advice? Today I purchased a fruit cup and have been eating it through out the day but I know it's not a good option either because I am not getting the Protein or nutrients I need.

Hi my name is Chris and I’m from the Bronx(NY) I will be having my surgery(hopefully) at Montefiore with Dr. Vemulapalli, so many things are running through my head and so many questions I want to ask. For all the women that can answer this; is the sleeve more painful than having a c-section? I have had 3 c-sections and I remember that the pain from the first one was horrible but the second and third were a breeze. Lol… Thanks

So i decided to order my own lipid panel last week to see where i am at 6 months post surgery with cholesterol levels. before surgery they were in the red. Very high where they were going to put me on medication. I got my results back today and all my cholesterol levels are in the green (normal range) gotta love it. But one thing that did come back high was something called bilirubin. It involves the liver mainly (Gall bladder too) By levels before surgery were normal. So will show them to my surgeon in 2 weeks when i have my 6 month follow up and see what they say. My surgeon sent me off today to get vitamin blood test done so i am curious to see how they come out and se…

So, the $64,000 question that I'm sure all newbies want to know: how fast (on average) do most people lose weight after surgery. I know, I know, everyone's different, but surely there is a range. I lost very quickly before and immediately after surgery, but now that I'm about 6 or 7 weeks out, it has slowed dramatically (less than 1/2 pound per day). Is that common? Does it speed up and slow down and then back up and down (much like my investments ?)? I'm trying to lose another 50-60 pounds. Should I be thinking 6 months or 2 years? Thanks PS: I bet no one has ever asked this before. Sorry, couldn't find a thread on this.

I'm at the end of my 1st week of pureed food. Every time I eat something like scrambled eggs, tuna, something with a little texture, I get the hiccups. Also, I experienced the foamies with the tuna salad. Is this common?

I'm 6.5 months out and I've started to experience an extremely noisy tummy in the last few weeks. I mean reeeeally loud and long gurgling at the most inopportune times! ? I'm not overly bothered by it, but I do wonder why it's started now? Anyone else know? In better news, I've lost 92lbs in that time. I'm well chuffed with that.

I have my operation at the end of next month & am reading horror stories about the post-operative pain from a gastric sleeve surgery. Can any post-ops share their experience of what the pain feels like, how bad it is & how they dealt with it, please?

  16. Iv'e had BOTh the ruen-y bypass surgery that was successful FOR over 10 years, after having a baby, gaining weight back and having vitamin deficiency issues I had a revision to a gastric sleeve. The sleeve has been a joke, there is no stopping me from over eating sweets or fried foods, I was sick when I ate those things with a ruen-y. I had an upper gi last week (I am 7 years post op of revision) Dr says my stomach looks like any other non surgery stomach he sees. So much for my surgery dr saying stomachs dont stretch. 1.Ruen-y is more evasive but it keeps you from eating sweets/fried foods without becoming so ill you have to lay down for 2 hours. (not dangerous, jus…

I had the sleeve done in 2020. Completely failed due to poor choices. Talked to my dr today about a revision. She is going to refer me to someone. Pros/cons? I read that you can do it nonsurgically?

  18. Started by BlessedMomma91,

This is probably going to sound silly but I have seen a lot of comments about sleeping in a recliner after coming home from surgery. Were you able to sleep in your bed? I don't have a recliner and really don't want to purchase one just for this reason but also need to be able to sleep comfortably. Would pillows propped against my headboard be sufficient? I'm having the sleeve on Nov 7th.

I'm 69 and have a BMI of 36. Been gaining weight continuously my adult life. I'm OK'd for sleeve surgery mid september. Can anyone with a similar age and BMI tell me their experience. Do you regret making the decision this late in life. Have the post op diet restrictions felt like a sacrifice. Did the 30% weight loss offset those the diet changes. Any insight that would help me make a more informed decision is appreciated. Thank you

decided to hop on the scale a little earlier than usual today. I normally only weigh myself once a month. Sure enough... I have officially lost 100lb in just 6 months post op. So exciting. and this was done basically with almost zero exercising. I work full time and i get home and i go straight to sleep lol. I do need to go shopping for clothes. So yesterday the new Black Adam movie came out. So i was getting dressed to go see it and realized nothing fit. My nicer clothing was too big, I literally wore my work uniform to go to the movies because thats all that fit haha. So i am off today so i am heading to the mall. To the stores that i normally can never go buy anything…

My surgery was April 26 22. I have gained 5 lbs in my weeks. I’m struggling to get back on track. I went on vacation to the beach and I didn’t stick to the plan. Now I can’t seem to get control of my snacking? How do I get back on track. How do I stop all of these cravings? Why is this so hard??

I've been experiencing bright red blood in my stool and after I passed gas. I'm 18 days post op and have lots of watery diarrhea still, so probably resulting from the irritation in the rectum. I'm going to give my doc a call on Monday (unless it worsens before then) but wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. Thanks all...

  24. Started by Vicky Sue,

I don't have an exact date yet but my surgery team planning end of Sept. I started my journey in April and have been working hard to get rid of some of my old habits. Drinking diet coke was the hardest, but now soda free. I can't just drink water so I've been drinking crystal light. Breakfast was also I've not really done. Now, I'm faithful every morning even it's just a greek yogurt. Also , throwing the straw away was tough but I keep thinking of how much better things will be. I've been journaling as a request from my dietitian and it had been a good tool for me to see what I need to watch. I've lost 19lbs in a few months which I'm grateful for.

I'm 5 weeks post op and live in Sydney Australia. I'm feeling quite good no serious side effects from my banded gastric sleeve. Started my journey end of July and have lost over 20kgs so far. I set myself a goal and decided that when I hit 20kgs loss I would go and get my hair done professionally. Haven't been to the hairdresser in about 5 years. Set yourself small goals and reward yourself because you deserve it. This is not an easy process to go through so make sure you follow through with your rewards

I am at the 6 month mark and my hair started to thin out at month 5. Currently its getting worse lol. and i am a guy with very short hair so its very noticeable now. So i bought me one of these hats to wear at work hahaha. Its funny and my customers love it. Hair always grows back (well except for old age lol) Shall see how it is in the next few months. I have my 6 month follow up in 2 weeks and i get my blood tests done on Monday for vitamins, CBC and a lipid panel. Kinda curious to see what my cholesterol levels are at because they were very high before surgery.

I am scheduled for my sleeve on Nov. 7th. My husband's family (2 to 6 people) always comes up from GA for Thanksgiving break. They sleep in a hotel but we spend the whole 4 or 5 days with them doing different things. My house is too small to entertain them all (plus me, hubby, and 4 kiddos) so being home to nap is not an option. I am worried that I'm not gonna be up to entertaining that soon after surgery. Should we ask them to reschedule or do you think you would have been up to it? They will arrive Nov 24th and be here 4 days or so. So 17 days after surgery.

I've noticed over the past few months for me, my cycle has started to change and become earlier and earlier by 2 to 3 days each month. Starting from the 28th and now as today the 18th. Being curious i thought i would ask to see if anyone else has experienced any changes.

  32. At a loss here. went to Mexico and had surgery Aug 12. Less than 24 hours after surgery I had to leave Tijuana because of the civil unrest going there. I have only heard from the dietician once they do not answer my emails or messages through WhatsApp. to the point where I paid a dietician on my own here in Canada. I went from consuming pre-surgery over five 6000 cal a day to now always sticking between 1000 and 1200 as per dietician. I used to only walk 500 to 1000 steps a day and I’m now doing 5000 to 6000 minimum a day. i have not smoked a cigarette even since before surgery. 34. Started by Fuff,

I’m just about 3 months post op. I’ve been eating about 4 oz per meal and losing pretty well. Tonight I had a frozen meal - it was an Amy’s Cheese Enchilada Meals - with beans and corn. I ate the whole meal. I didn’t feel overly full and when I recorded it (I track my protein) it was almost 9 ounces!!! How did I even eat that much?! Terrified I stretched my pouch or something - though I really didn’t feel overly full!

greetings, those of you post op: what surprised you after surgery? what happened that you didn’t expect or think of? (gas issues, rate of weight loss, tiredness issues, food intolerances, other people reaction, or whatever else you were not prepared for)

Hello all and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this website while searching for protein supplements! I finally have my sleeve scheduled for October the 19th!! This Wednesday!! I so super excited and ready to begin this new chapter in my life! I’m sure many people here have encountered a lot of resistance and negativity from others regarding this choice, which makes having places like this helpful and encouraging. I appreciate seeing the positivity and sharing among everyone and am looking forward to having this forum to come back to during my new journey!!

Somewhat shallow post ☺️ I am frustrated with my hair. It’s been about a year and a half since surgery. It has been thin, and different textures/thicknesses. I got the wispy ends cut off, but it all looks dry and weird. Like a wig, or cotton candy, or something made of straw. Not like life before surgery. (I am so happy I had the surgery and would do it again.). I tried hot oil, different conditioners, blowing it dry differently, styling differently. Dermatologist said I could try Rogaine, but not sure I want to risk more hair loss. Any suggestions from those of you who experienced something similar? I usually go to a discount salon for t…

how much can you eat after your sleeve compared with what you could eat before? I can eat a lot at pre op , I can literally eat and eat !! Some people say after about 6/7 months their restrictions isn't there as much, will there be some sort of restriction for life ? Or will you be able to eat again like you could pre op ?

Just wanted to drop a note of encouragement to the folks who are considering surgery, pre-surgery, in the early recovery stages. I had VSG on May 20, 2021 and started out 355 lbs. In a year, I'm down to 237.2. Life is so much easier, I have so much more stamina, and I'm so glad I had surgery and didn't get cold feet. Once I was out of the recovery phase it has been amazing how normal life feels, even if it's a new normal. I am wishing you the best and keep at it! ❤️

Prior to surgery I was not addicted to any drugs or alcohol. However, I would comfortably assume I was “addicted” to food. Now that I’m not eating anywhere close to as much as I used to, I fear I am seeking to fill that void with an odd replacement…professional sports. I am an avid baseball fan and my team has a really good chance at making the playoffs this year. When they win, I’m in a great mood, nothing could be better. However, when they lose, I go into a tailspin and get very depressed, instantly having little to no interest in doing anything or finding joy in anything. I am speaking with a psychiatrist in a week, so hopefully that will help begin the coping p…

I had VSG on 1/18/2022 SW 281 LW 219 CW 224 I am feeling so defeated, I feel like by now I should have lost more… I eat right, workout 3-4 days a week, I work full time as an RN in a busy emergency department 3-4 nights a week so my job is pretty active as well… I’m just pretty lost on why I’m such a slow loser. I haven’t lost anything since May, actually gained 5 lbs. I have met with my doctor and they referred me to a nutritionist which said to track everything and told me food wise I’m doing what I need to be doing and really didn’t offer much more advice. Does anyone have any experience with Dr. Jeffry Romero Manzano in Tijuana? My surgery was scheduled with Dr. Verboonen but now they switched me to Dr. Jeffry and I don't know anything about him. I do know that he has a lot less experience than Dr. Verboonen. Now I'm really nervous.
