Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums

Hi all! I'm hoping for some insight/advice/encouragement. I was banded in 2008 and lost a total of 67 pounds (there was more to lose). Through the years I've gained back about 20 pounds. I have severe heartburn and am on Nexium. I'm looking into a band/sleeve revision. It scares me that the sleeve is permanent. Can someone give me a revision success story to ease my mind? I admire all of you!!

Tomorrow can not get here soon enough. Im nervous, excited and scared. I'm nervous that I'm making a mistake (first surgery went well...perhaps I won't be as lucky) - excited because I have hope that I will lose weight and get rid of the acid reflux, and scared that nothing will change or get worse. I'm embarrassed I have to be here again. :/ My husband is supportive but doesn't really understand...food needs to be my enemy and just for fuel...it's hard to eat right when all he wants is meat and potatoes and I have to make it. Anyways, searching for folks that have been successful in a sleeve to bypass situation..looking for all the advice I can get.

I just like to be informed and the internet isn't giving me a lot of info on this subject. JUST CURIOUS ..****** So I read stories on here about revisions from band to sleeve, or sleeve to bypass etc. But maybe I am missing something. I have suffered with the lapband for years finally had a revision to bypass in December 28 2015, Down about 40 pounds...yes I have PCOS but wow.I thought I would be down more than 40 pounds by now....a slowwwww....loser!

Hi all so I had the lapband placed Jan of 2011. Slowly was getting fills each month trying to get to the "sweet spot". Got down to 220 from hw of 275. Well in Oct went in for my monthly fill and it ended up being to much but I could still eat some things so I was going to try and take it easy until my next apt in Nov 3 weeks latter. Well the Sunday before my apt I got so stuck I couldn't swallow my own silva. So to the ER I went and they did an emergency unfill of about 5 cc's. Went in that following we'd for my scheduled apt and they put 3 cc's back in now that the swelling had gone down. 2 weeks latter I get my bill for both ER visit and fill apt and my insurance did no…

I have a consultation with Dr. Hollis in Houston tomorrow to see if I can get a band to sleeve revision. I will be self pay since my insurance doesn't cover any bariatrics. Since I will be self pay, does anyone know if I will have to go through all the testing again like I did before I had my lap band put in? Also, does anyone have any idea how much a revision surgery will cost? Thanks.

I got the approval for my sleeve to bypass revision surgery from Aetna!!!! I had VSG in January, 2012. I started gaining back the weight about 1 1/2 years ago and sadly regained all I had lost. I am SO ready for this second "second chance" and feel so blessed!! The insurance coordinator at my doctor's office was very worried that we would get approved because other requests had been denied by Aetna. Has any one has complications REVISIONing from band to bypass? If so what complications? As I do know every surgery has its risks! I just want to be mentally prepared for all this!! I had the banded plication surgery approximately 3 years ago. Apparently there was a bulge in the upper part of the stomach where they sewed up the stomach. The stiches weren't stitched and half of the plication was there. Would this explain why I have bad food choices and a difference in my diet? I am going to get it undone. Would anyone know what my options are as far as re-banding in the future or fixing this surgery?

I have an appointment Wednesday to see if I can get a revision to the sleeve. I am paying cash since insurance won't cover it. I was wondering if I will have to go through all the testing again if I am paying cash. I really don't want to wait another 6 months to have surgery. Also, did anyone have any complications from the revision? Any regrets? Were you finally able to lose the weight?

I was sleeved 4 years ago by Dr. Ariel Ortiz. Since then, I have had GERD. I have gone through several diets and tests to get rid of the pain, but only a high dosage of Omeprazole twice a day helps. I also have about 40-45 lbs to lose. So I have been considering revision to the Bypass. Would love to hear from any of you who have gone through this major step: What were your reasons? What were your results like? Most importantly, who was your surgeon? And can you tell me about your experience? I am currently in the process of deciding on a revision surgeon in Mexico. Looking into having surgery by December or so. Thank you for reading and for anything you can share.

So I am a week out of surgery. First couple of days it felt like I did 10 000 sit ups. Today it feels like only doing 500. Got my walking down, sipping my liquids but need to sip a lot more to meet my goal. I know it doesn't happen overnight. I start each day with a Boost Diabetic Protein drink. My endo suggests I have a revision to sleeve or bypass from my band. I am pretty sure insurance will approve a revision pretty easily as I have regained almost all my weight. My question is this: My insurance requires a 6 month preop diet. (I did that with the band.) Will that requirement stand for a revision, or does the fact that I have a band serve as my medically supervised weightloss attempt?

To give a bit of background: My highest weight ever was 357 and I underwent lap band surgery on May 2013 - four days after I turned 21. I found great success with it for the first 18 months, losing 156 lbs before having a body lift (tummy tuck/butt & thigh lift) and arm lift in late February 2015 where an additional 11 lbs of excess skin was removed, making my total loss 167 lbs and my lowest weight to date being 190 lbs. Hello everyone!! I am just a month post-op now and have lost 34 pounds already, so I am thrilled with my progress so far. I know this was the right decision for me, and although I am only one month out, I am concerned about what my body will look like once I am down to the weight I want to be. Okay, so I had the upper GI and the endoscopy. I have intractable bile reflux, which has damaged my esophagus. I also have a small sliding hiatal hernia which causes a slight amount of discomfort when I eat. My surgeon has decided to revise my sleeve to bypass. I was fine with all of this, but I think the stress is wearing me down. I am so tired and scared. I know this is necessary, but for some reason, my anxiety is off the charts. I just had band to sleeve revision surgery on August 17th 2016 after 4 yrs with the lapband. I would just like so e advice and what to expect. Weight loss with the band was very slow. From what I've heard, the sleeve surgery you drop weight a lot quicker. Just want to get so e ideas and share my story.

I was banded 03/2012 with my highest weight being 318. The lowest I saw with the band was 237 around 07/2014. I rarely felt real restriction and worked out 5-6 days a week, 2 hours a day, to get to 237. Once I couldn't keep up the workout routine I began gaining. My doctor/nutritionist put me on a diet pill around 10/2015 which I didn't see much results and hated the side effects. I was unbanded on 05/2016 and am on schedule for my revision 12/2016. Currently, I am about 305. My surgeon suggested a sleeve, but I am wondering if bypass would give me better results despite the complications that can come from bypass. I had LapBand in 2009, but my endo. thinks I should have a revision to sleeve or bypass. Insurance required 6 month supervised diet before my initial surgery. Will they require this again before a revision surgery or does having the band itself negate that requirement?

I transitioned so well with the sleeve. I seem to be failing at the RNY and I feel myself depressed and with no motivation. I can not get in my vitamins, my protein or my fluids daily as required. I am full constantly. I have thrown up twice attempting to take in more. The first time I felt ill afterwards. The second time, I felt like I had an eating disorder. I have never heard that before! And the head of the medical board for bcbsil didn't event want to hear my case and is refusing to allow anymore appeals. We only had one appeal and that was peer to peer. He said the only complication from the sleeve is a leak and not GERD. So I have to go to the Insurance board of IL. Never would have imagined. Hello! Newbie over here – Even though I have been using this forum for years! I am 4 years post-op VSG. I am very happy with my weight loss and maintenance, but I never had any issues with acid reflux prior to my surgery! For the past 4 years, I have been struggling daily with my acid reflux issues. I take medication every single morning and night and without it, I am in an incredible amount of pain. I am unable to lie down or sleep properly, and this causes tension for my neck and my back. Hello! I am 4 years post-op VSG. I have been reviewing some research where VSG to RNY revision patients, who had [severe] acid reflux, were cured after Bypass. I was hoping to please get feedback from those of you who had VSG surgery and then converted to the RNY: How severe was your acid reflux after VSG? How many years did you wait before you convert? Was GERD the only reason? Did the RNY revision completely cure your GERD? Would greatly appreciate your feedback!

Does anyone else have this problem? I still have to sleep elevated slightly, or I get reflux. Also, after I eat or drink, I get like a "bubble" in my chest right below my throat. Here's my story, it's kind of long but I'll try to keep it short. June 30th I found a revision surgeon in Mexico who was able to take out my band and do a sleeve in one surgery. He is board certified in bariatrics (in MX) and is the president of the Mexican College of Bariatrics. Anyway, shortly after surgery, I got horrible GERD. Started off with one prilosec a day, quickly moved to two, and Gaviscon for symptoms, then on to dexilant. After a couple of days the dexilant wasn't working completely and I had to add some pepcids at night. Has anyone had to do this? My reflux is making me miserable...saw surgeon yesterday and he wants to do upper GI and upper endoscopy. Then they will submit to insurance for revision approval. I am super nervous, not because of the insurance but because I really want to feel better and just lose this weight already! It would be super to not have my esophagus feel like it's on fire. So, I am back yet again, I've been gone for a while. A little history about myself, I'm a nurse (yeah, I know), and I had lap band done in 2009 with removal in 2015, gastric sleeve in Sept 2015. I lost about 40 lbs with the band and gained it all back after 2 babies- no big issues with the band other than vomiting from stuck food. Has anyone had a revision where they were re-sleeved to a smaller pouch, that can explain the hair loss or anything that differed from the first recovery? Do you lose the same amount of hair, less, none at all?

I was banded on 5.8.12 and we'll my progress stalled. The surgeon who did my adjustments made it way too tight that nothing stayed down even when he told me I still had room. When I complained he would tell me that in order do see if it was or if it slipped that I would have to be placed under imaging and that would cost me a lot of money and after some visits later suggested I do sleeve. Also the nutrionist would never properly respknd to my any of my emails thus no follow ups with the nutritionist even when I asked about it. I recently converted to Duodenum switch from the sleeve. I had the sleeve surgery back in 2013 and lost about 50lbs and have gained most of it back along with developing a hiatal hernia as well. I am on my 7th day post-op and I have done full liquids but I am really wanting to move to semi-soft pureed foods. Has anyone done that before they were suppose to and did you do ok? My thoughts are the staples in my stomach are already healed since that part was completed 2 yrs ago. I only have the switch of the intestines this time. Hi! I was wondering if Un-filling the band pre-surgery is necessary. I'm submitting all my papers to the insurance this week and I was wondering if I should request an unfill in order to prepare for the surgery. Right now my band has 5.5 cc of saline. Hello. This is my first post over here on RNY Talk- I've been a member on Vertical Sleeve Talk for a few months. I had the sleeve on August 6th and it is has been quite a terrible journey! My surgeon could not figure out why I was vomiting daily and having trouble staying hydrated. I have a new surgeon now and he believes that he will need to do a revision surgery to the RNY. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this type of revision an what it was like? I hear your pouch is super small compared to normal RNY patients... Just looking for any pointers....

I was banded almost 5 years ago. I lost 55lbs over a very long period of time and from what I honestly think was just hard work and not much help from the band. I hate my band. It hurts. I feel like it's violent when I get stuck (often) and I can feel my port all the time for FIVE years. Sigh. Eating is stressful and to top it off I've gained every ounce back. I sometimes eat 2 bites can't eat another bite longingly look at my healthy or even healthy-ish food and an hour later eat Cookies because I am starving. I feel like my eating habits have become worse because of the band and at this point I'm totally out of control. I'm excited about revising and petrified too…

I've had a lapband since 08 and having pain at port site, occasional dry heaves, belching. I'm seeing a surgeon Aug. 5 about a revision to GBP and am wondering about the requirements for revision to be approved by Anthem BCBS. Hi All, My Dr's office submitted my paperwork to my insurance company Blue Shield last Monday. They came back requesting more info pre and post weight/BMI? We finally understood they were asking for my info pre and post lap band. I had it placed in 2006 and removed in 2009/2010. I removed it since it just didn't work and we wanted to start a family. My question is do any of you have any experience with insurance companies denying based upon past failures? Insurance finally approved my band to bypass revision surgery! It happens tomorrow. I am so excited and scared at the same time.

I had surgery in 2006 and lost 280 pounds over all over the course of six years… In the past three years I gained back 90 pounds… Last year I had an endoscopy and upper G.I. and they discovered I had a hiatal hernia and some staple adhesions… And recommended a revision… The surgeon I went to told me that he could leave the new smaller stomach and they now remove the excess old stomach… They no longer leave your stomach in there or he doesn't… And doing my research I understood a revision patient usually loses 2 to 3 pounds a month… My doctor said when he got in there… He found a fistula which was a complication from the first surgery which most likely cause my weight gain…

Does anyone have any idea or stats on if the risk is higher for Lap-band Revision to Gastric Sleeve?

So I had a band that was removed in Dec 14 due to slipped band. Since then I have now gained about 90 lbs, the Bariatric surgeon that took it out just told me last week that he would do a sleeve or bypass on me. My BMI right now is 32, and he wants me to lose 10 lbs before he submits to insurance, my worries are what if the insurance denies me....
