Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery

Pregnancy after weight loss surgery. Trying to conceive, nutrition, recovery, breastfeeding, and parenting post-op.

My wife doesn't like to post much, so I will share her story, as it is quite unique. My wife was banded in Sept '08, self pay. I would like to say she followed all the 'rules' all the times, but she didn't always. In June of '09, she experienced her first band slippage. They removed the fill, and she went back to liquids. She went back 4 weeks and the band was back in place, and they filled again. We were also warned, that once you slip, you have a higher chance of re-occurance. Makes sense if you think about it. Anyways, by Late October, her band had slipped again, this time to a full 90 degree prolapse. She was unfilled again. We began the process of figuring out wh…

  2. Hi, my name is Angie. I'm a 34-year-old mommy of a beautiful one-year-old girl. My question is about surgery after giving birth. Has anyone had vsg while caring for a baby or very young child? I'm wondering about things like how that will affect my recovery, when I will be able to pick her up etc., and resume all the physical tasks that having a very little one entails. I'd love to hear from anyone who has gone through this. Thanks!

  4. Hi I am 27 years old and I was banded in March 09 and I was 314 lbs then I went down to 230 and had two fills then I got pregnant in Dec 09 and no more fills. I have not gotten a unfill because I am scared to do that. Plus my insurance changed and I can no longer go to the same doctor but he said I could pay $100 to get fills done when I am finished with the pregnancy. I went up 249 lbs and now at 7 months I am now btwn 261-263 I flucuate daily. So I awaiting a call back from the doctor when I can go to him after I have the baby is here. I want to breast feed as well. So any advice until I get my phone call. I dont want to get anyway. I cannot wear my size 20 or 22 maybe…

I just found out I was pregnant. I was banded in September of 2010 and had recently reached my goal of losing 110 lbs. I was feeling great about myself and then found out I was pregnant. My husband and I were told we would never have a baby naturally, because of infertility on his part. So imagine my shock when I saw the Pregnant on three digital tests! In one week of finding out I have gained 7lbs. I know that weight gain is going to happen, but for 10 months losing weight has been my focus. I was crushed when I step on the scale to find I had gained 7lbs. How do you deal with the weight gain? Does it get easier? I had set a goal to gain only 25-30…

  6. Hello all! I have been reading this forum and keeping up to date on challenges and issues and benefits of having the sleeve with pregnancy. Congrats Ange! Not sure how many else are pregnant / have been pregnant with the sleeve or if many are reading this board, but thought I would give it a shot as I am in desperate need of advise. I am currently working with an RE on embryo adoption (we are unable to have our own biological children - severe male factor). Despite the most important thing to me in the world at this point, I have been unable to lose weight to increase my chances of the transfer taking. My BMI is around 39. Preface, those of you who know me on Facebook please don't say anything, not telling my real life folks just yet. We've been tracking my ovulation for 2 months to try to plan for a girl (long story). I have not ovulated according to tests. I got to the end of a clearblue ovulation kit pack and it comes with a pregnancy test, so I took it for fun. Well, that and I had my tell-tale sign I had from my first band baby, ridiculous tightness in the band and can't get food down. Sure enough, I'm pregnant again! Hopin' for a girl this time! Due 2/14/11.

  8. Okay everyone.. We all know when your pregnant you have cravings. Ive been REALLY bad. I eat healthy most of the time.. but sometimes I eat breads and pastas.. Since I was 10 weeks preggo Ive had the feeling of a constant lump in my throat. Some days I have it.. and some days I don't. I finally talked to my OB about it and she tested my thryoid.. which was fine. A friend of mine also has LAP-BAND® and she mentioned Ive probably stretched my pouch bc I can eat SOO much more then what I used to. Like tonight for instance.. I made an omlet with veggies in it.. I used 3 eggs to make the omlet.. I was able to get down about 3/4 of it! I KNOW thats to much! I only had the band …

Does anyone know what makes the band tighter during pregnancy? I am 5 weeks pregnant and during the past week my band has felt tight at different times of the day. It's not that I can't get food down, it just physically feels extremely tight, giving me a backache and such. I've been trying to pin point why I would be feeling like this and I was thinking it might be because I am hungry?? I'm not sure. Thanks!

Hi guys, i got banded 31st May 2008. I lost 50lbs in the first 6mths and then got pregnant. I didn't have any fills to allow me to eat enough so as not to restrict what was eating. I went off the rails and due to ill health and being bed bound, got into bad habbits and because i was pg, i kinda stuck my head in the sand. After my son was born i was 14lbs off my pre-surgery weight  I went for a fill but felt no restriction. I've only room for 1 or 2 small fills. so whats the point? I'm doing slimming world and the weight is coming off again, but i want this band i paid for to work again. Should I have my and drained, bar the first 5 mls and wait a month…

I am only 6 weeks pg right now, but the symptoms are starting to set in. I have had horrible reflux the past few nights...I'm practically sleeping sitting up and even that does not help. This was never a problem for me before... I guess it's the bloating. Quite nauseated today as well, and so tight I could not get down broth at lunch. (Eating soup now though at 6:30pm.) I was SO hoping I could stay filled for at least the next 6 months, but I'm definitely not getting the nutrition I need right now (hello, ice cream!) Has anyone been unfilled and then filled again later in pregnancy? Maybe I should just take out a cc? I'm 15 pounds from my goal, and though I'm THRIL…

When I came off bc I had my period for 10 days (Nov 1-10). I have been super moody and tired lately and have to pee all the time... I took a test in hopes last week, but it was negative...I don’t know if it's in my head. Could I be preg this soon? How long did it take for others to conceive?

Anyway, I keep reading through the threads about unfills and pregnancy as I'm very interested in the subject. As it turns out, I was about 10lbs under what my health insurance would consider overweight enough (BMI of 40) to cover my LB procedure, so I opted to self-pay in Mexico instead of gorging myself and playing insurances stupid game. I'm soooooo happy that I got my band!! It was a great present to myself and my health. So, si…

At my last doctors appt. my dr. told me I am not getting enough calories in and I'm starting to get scared! I dont want anything to effect the health of myself or the baby. So far they say the baby is growing fine which is great! But, does anybody have any suggestions on what I should eat or If I should get an unfill or not?

Hi All, I'm 8 weeks along and am a bit confused about what I should be eating and how much. I asked my OB for recommendations on a nutritionist as nobody seems to know all that much about pregnancy with the lap band, but so far, they haven't been able to direct me to any nutritionists who seem to have good info on lap band pregnancies. What do you other pregnant lap banders eat on an average day? Any tips? I suspect I've been mentally using the pregnancy as an excuse to stray pretty far from the plan and so far, I've gained more than I think I should. I'd like to get things under control and keep them that way for the duration. I haven't had any unfill yet - but I…

I am due to start my cycle on May 5, and on April 26, I started spotting, light pink and then seems to get a little heavier, but have not needed a pad. Hey all I was banded about 13 months ago, now i am pregnant. I had gestational diabetes with my daughter 4 years ago so of course i am at risk this time around, however i am significantly lighter now so i am hoping i am in the clear. My question is has anyone had to have this test while banded? I am afraid of the slight carbonation the drink i have to drink for the test has. I am probably going to call the surgeons office but the test is tomorrow and basically there is no way out of it, i have to do it for the safety of myself and my baby. Just wondering if anyone has had it and how they were with it.:confused:

  24. I went to a session at my surgeon's office yesterday. One thing they stressed, and even included in the contract I had to sign, was that I am not allowed to get pregnant until 2 years after my surgery. The whole reason for the surgery for me is so I can get pregnant. If I wait until 2 years out to start trying, it will be a minimum of 3 years before I am holding a baby in my arms, and that's if I am successful right away. If we still have fertility problems, it will be even longer. I am 28 now and have been wanting a baby for 7 years, I don't really want to wait that long. I see other people on here talking about getting pregnant or trying to get pregnant a year or les…

  25. For those who were unfilled during pregnancy, how long did you wait to get your fill after delivery? I want to try and breastfeed, so I'm currently planning on waiting at least a month after delivery to get my supply established before getting a fill and cutting calories. Anyone find that getting a fill and eating less was problematic for their breastmilk supply? If my post-partum eating is anything like my pregnancy eating, I can probably go a little while without a fill. I seem to have this perfect storm right now-- no fill, but NO sweet cravings, many of my favorite foods don't appeal, and I have to avoid fatty stuff due to gall bladder acting up early in pregna…

Hello, my name is Stephanie Elliott and I am a student at Brock University. I am doing a research project looking at exercise behaviours in women during pregnancy and would appreciate your participation in this study. It is a short survey that will take approximately 15 minutes of your time, and is completely anonymous and for academic purposes only. For more information and to complete the survey. For those of you who have delivered, did your band have any impact on your contractions? I've had crazy port pain throughout my pregnancy and am wondering if it will continue through my labor? Does the epidural help as far "north" as our port? thanks!
