Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery

Does anyone know how long I will have to wait after I get my band to try to get pregnant?

I have talked about pregnancy previously with my fill nurse. She pretty much said that we could be by with a small defill or even keep it filled throughout most of the pregnancy if you are not suffering from morning sickness and you are not overly restricted. I needed a slight unfill (thinking maybe -.25 or -.5) and had an appointment yesterday afternoon. My usual fill nurse was not there, I had someone else who I have seen before . . . but not for a long time. I am only 6 small pounds from goal. Only 6 measly almost insignificant pounds . . . it is unbelievable. Only 1 week to go and I am officially into my 2nd trimester! My mom seems disappointed in my reactions to things, I think I am just very guarded. I had an unpleasant unfill appointment yesterday, but the fill nurse did share an interesting story. She had a banded patient who was in for a fill. While she was locating the port, she said she told her she could feel her fundus . . . could she be pregnant? Well the women told her no, it isn't possible . . . she had been suffering from fertility problems for many years, and after pursuing a multitude of unsuccessful treatment options, she had adopted 2 children with the thought that she would never be able to conceive. Hi everyone! I was banded on 1/30/08 by Dr Matthew Brengman in Richmond, Va. I am doing very well, I find out next week when my 1st band fill is! I am down 40 pounds and I feel great. Has anyone here had any experience with infertility like myself? My surgeon has told me that once I really get down to where I want to be (this won't be for awhile, I want to lost 130 more pounds-I weigh 290 now) that I may surprise myself and get pregnant very quickly. I am trying to figure out when I actually got pregnant because I am really not sure of exactly when it happened although I did chart all events. This is complicated because I got pregnant the first month I went off of birth control and did not give my body a chance to stabilize. I just had my baby 3 1/2 weeks ago, got on the scale today and I am the exact same weight that I was when i got pregnant. I was so excited to see that. Of course it would be better if it was less, but that will come in time I'm sure.

I found out Friday that I am pregnant! This was my second attempt with trying......I am using a sperm donor because I am not married. I have been banded for 11 months, have lost 58 lbs and lapband doc says that fill will stay in as long as I'm doing good. I started bleeding yesterday afternoon and called the doctor right away as I never bled during my first pregnancy. He told me to come in for an ultrasound and exam. They did the ultrasound and all seemed fine. Then the doctor came in. He told me that he's a little bit concerned over the bleeding and mild cramping I had. But his biggest concern is with my ultrasound. I had one two weeks ago and the baby measures at about 6 weeks. In this ultrasound the baby measured at 7 weeks. It should be measuring at 8 weeks. Hi Everyone, My name is Missy and I was banded one year ago. I found out I was pregnant about 6 weeks ago and i had my band unfilled. I am about 9 weeks pregnant and for the last three days I have had some pretty bad chest pain in my left side. Under my breast, my ribcage, above my heart and even up into my shoulder and my back. It is worst when I take a deep breath. Like a sharp stab. Do you think this could be heartburn? I have never been pregnant and I am fearful the band may cause me additional problems. I've been at 205 since I found out I was pregnant. I fluctuate a pound or so here or there but I've been a steady 207 for two days now. I'm at 9 weeks. Is it too early for me to be gaining? I noticed I can't fit into some of my pants because of a little belly that I didn't have before. I lost 13 pounds during the first trimester of my first pregnancy because of some awful morning sickness so I'm not sure if this is okay or if I need to lay off the munchies. LOL! Hello everyone! I've been around the general board for awhile, but lurking here. I found out last week that I'm pregnant, and the husband and I are thrilled. I'm seven months post-op, and I'm just 4 weeks pregnant. In fact, I found out that I was pregnant at about 3.5 weeks, which is very early to be producing enough HCG to create a positive home pregnancy test (hmmm. . . wonder if its twins?). Surely I can't be the only nursing bandster..who else is out there? I am nursing my 4th right now..was banded on April 25th..nursed when I left for the surgery..nursed when I came home (6 hours later..lol). It was a bit painful having her plop on top of my belly with my incisions (a pillow between us helped!)..and the first night was rough, as she seemed to want to nurse every hour, but we are doing well now, 4 days later. UGH! I have hyperemesis gravidarum. For those that don't know it's a condition of pregnancy with excessive vomiting and nausea. I'm 17 wks now and last night was my second time in the ER getting IV fluids because I'm so dehydrated. The thing that sucks is that everytime I throw up, which is as many as 15 times a day, I have to worry if my band is going to slip. Actually I think it's hanging in there pretty tough. But the only way to confirm that is with x-ray which I refuse to do while pregnant. I'm on acid reflux and anti-nausea medicine but nothing is working. food and liquids go down totally fine. I am extremely gassy since this Monday!! I am not generally a gassy person, so for it to continue this long, I know it's not something I ate. It's getting worse, and I work in an office with people coming & going constantly so I am having to go run down the hall to an empty office to let it out (lol, picture it?!). And spraying my body splash stuff. My obgyn is a voicemail system, and they don't call me back for at least 24 hours.. anyone know if you can take gas-x? Or a good home remedy for it? :smile2:

hey everyone well i was spotting and i was really concerned but it is all turing out ok....i had to go to the ER bc of it and we saw the ultra sound and we saw the little yolk sac...i went had a repeat of blood work and all that and well i have great news.... Hi, I have had my band for nearly 3 years. Evrything was fine with the band until i got pregnant and had my daughter. My doc took out all my fill in the band when i was 12 weeks pregnant due to bad reflux. I was fine for the whole pregnancy and could eat whatever i wanted with no problems or feeling of restriction.. Straight after i had my daughter by c section food started to get stuck. This has been going on now for 10 months and the doctor cant work our why... I have had a gastroscope and barium swallow that shows the band is fine and not slipped, however we cant work out why i have got so much restriction. this is really starting to ruin my life as i cant eat anythin…

For the past 4 weeks or so I have been experiencing nightly band pain. Every night I have the hardest time sleeping because my band hurts so bad. It's very difficult to lay on my left side. Finally between 1-3am I have to vomit and then my band feels better and I can sleep. The weird thing is that I have no restriction, nothing is stuck in my band, I've tried not eating for hours before bed and also eating a snack right before bed. Neither makes it better. And I'm not throwing up food, it's mostly bile. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It's only been the past few weeks of my pregnancy. But it's terrible. i'm 15 weeks today and for the past 4 weeks or so i've pretty much had a constant headache. they range from 'just there' to 'oh my i want to shoot my head off'. of course, Tylenol is the only thing i can take and that just doesnt do it for me. last nigth i did finally take 2 Tylenol PM and at least got a good night's sleep. any recommendations?

Well its weird...we tried for 2 years before the band...than we decided this last month we would start trying for a baby my aug cycle...aka the one that never came....bc i am PREG!!!! we are in shock and excited and super happy!!! we got preg with out even trying God is amazing and the Band is my best friend!!!! Hi I am a slow loser I had my band since 2003 and lost 60 lbs and kept it off. I have 4.3 cc in my 5 cc band. My port is not in the best spot. It is 3 fingers above my navel and to the right. My doc has a hard time getting fills and always need Floro. I am now 10 weeks pregnant and since I am 40 would my only one. I am worried about my port ripping from my abdominal wall during pregnancy. Has this happened to anyone? I can still eat my calories since I am 203 now was 196 for the last 3 years. Prior to surgery was 260lbs. Need advice thanks. :whatchutalkingabout

I am hoping to get my band this fall and I would also like to have one more child. During my research I read that banded women are more likely to have a c-section. I was wondering what your experience has been? Did any of you have complications due to your band that necessitated a section? TIA!

so I did get a fill a few days ago and it does seem to help the CONSTANT hunger I've had with this pregnancy.. the weird thing is - I'll eat dinner (1/2 piece tilapia and 3 bites broc last night), be satisfied - a tad full even... then 2 hours later, i was STARVING... enuff to wanna chew my left arm off... so at 9:00 last night I'm eating shredded BBQ chicken.. I literally take 3-4 small bites - done.. not 'full', but good.. I just don't understand how I go from 1 extreme to the other SO quickly. thoughts??

I'm 33 weeks now, and suddenly got some major restriction. I actually lost 3 lbs last week -- whoa! So, I went in for an unfill. My port is still hard to get at, which means lots of poking and prodding to get the needle in right. My mom was with me and she swears it took almost 30 minutes. Anyways, I feel much better now being able to eat. I do still feel some restriction, even with it empty, but I'm totally ok with that -- no need to go gaining 15 lbs over the last 7 weeks, right?! I sit here this evening having just gotten home from the hospital today for my "band exchange" surgery. I had to have my little band exchanged for a larger band and my doc seems to believe (as do I) that it is pregnancy related. I had my beautiful, wonderful daughter on March 8th. Literally on March 9th my band tightened up and hardly relented until, well, today. I was able to get it to a barely liveable state, but I knew I was living on the edge. I found out two weeks ago that I am pregnant. All of a sudden it's like there is no restriction. I feel like I am constantly eating. What happened? I haven't had an unfill yet. My appt. is next Monday but I am tempted to cancel it and just keep the fluid until I feel I need to remove it. I am just amazed that almost over night I can go from having great restriction to feeling like there's no restriction at all.

Now my surgery is no secret at work, so of course, this pricked up my ears. Got pregnant through IVF in May 2004. All was well until October 2004 when I suffered an incomplete cervix. My son was born at 22 weeks and died very soon after birth. We did another embryo transfer (from the same lot as our Declan) in spring of 2005, but no luck. So, we waited. Hi, I have 2 boys, a 27 month old and a 6 month old. I got my band in 2004 and was losing weight and then had to unfil since I got pregnant and was pregnant again before I had any fills. I am currently weighing in at 112 kg's or 246 lbs. This pregnancy was a bit of a surprise for us (but a welcome one). I was only 5 months post band when I fell pregnant, I am now 12 weeks along. This is a bit of an embarassing question, but I was wondering if there is anyone on this board who fell pregnant while they were still overweight, and I'm curious as to whether the pregnancy showed? i am approximately 2.5 months pregnant, but my embryo died at 6 weeks. we found out yesterday via an vaginal ultrasound that the embryo does not have a heartbeat. i find out thursday if my blood work confirms it. (my hcg levels have to be going down). i'm devastated. i never knew it would be this hard, but now i have another decision to make. my doctor wants me to decide if i want a d & c or if i want to wait for it to pass. i don't know if i can walk around every day waiting for it to happen. it's hard enough now because i know it is still in there. it's already been several weeks and no sign of miscarriage.
