Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery

Pregnancy after weight loss surgery. Trying to conceive, nutrition, recovery, breastfeeding, and parenting post-op.

Does anyone know how long I will have to wait after I get my band to try to get pregnant?

  2. Started by HeatherO,

I have talked about pregnancy previously with my fill nurse. She pretty much said that we could be by with a small defill or even keep it filled throughout most of the pregnancy if you are not suffering from morning sickness and you are not overly restricted. I needed a slight unfill (thinking maybe -.25 or -.5) and had an appointment yesterday afternoon. My usual fill nurse was not there, I had someone else who I have seen before . . . but not for a long time. Anyway, this is my first post-pregnancy appointment, I am 7 weeks plus and I spilled the Beans. The nurse just gave me a look, asked how far along, and told me she was going to empty the band. I pleaded…

I am only 6 small pounds from goal. Only 6 measly almost insignificant pounds . . . it is unbelievable. I can practically taste my goal it is so close and I had huge plans for when I finally attain it (shopppinnnngg sppprreeeeee). But now, what can I say, I am not sure I can make those last six pounds. Perhaps it will take me a year to get there. Nutrition is the goal right now with a baby coming. I gained 67 pounds with my first pregnancy and I was 126 pounds when I got pregnant . . . 67 POUUNNNDDSS!!!!!. I got unbelievable stretch marks that time because you don't just grow by 50% in a few short months without ill affect. This also signalled the beginnings o…

  5. Only 1 week to go and I am officially into my 2nd trimester! My mom seems disappointed in my reactions to things, I think I am just very guarded. Even though I have no bad indicators, I am terrified I will get excited and then I'll miscarry and regret getting attached. Hoping when I look pregnant I'll be more into it. She bought baby moccasins for me and gave them to me today. They're cute, but I'm not.. giddy excited.. and I know she's wishing her daughter was more excited and giddy!! I hope I come around and stop being scared of getting attached. Had no morning sickness thus far, but today (for the first time) I had a queasy moment. I was starving, DH and I went to …

I had an unpleasant unfill appointment yesterday, but the fill nurse did share an interesting story. She had a banded patient who was in for a fill. While she was locating the port, she said she told her she could feel her fundus . . . could she be pregnant? Well the women told her no, it isn't possible . . . she had been suffering from fertility problems for many years, and after pursuing a multitude of unsuccessful treatment options, she had adopted 2 children with the thought that she would never be able to conceive. The fill nurse said she was pretty sure that she was pregnant, so she took a pregnancy test . . . and lo and behold it was positive. She got an …

Hi everyone! I was banded on 1/30/08 by Dr Matthew Brengman in Richmond, Va. I am doing very well, I find out next week when my 1st band fill is! I am down 40 pounds and I feel great. Has anyone here had any experience with infertility like myself? My surgeon has told me that once I really get down to where I want to be (this won't be for awhile, I want to lost 130 more pounds-I weigh 290 now) that I may surprise myself and get pregnant very quickly. Has anyone had this happen? Just curious! Ashlee

Hi everyone. I had to share. I am not sure if I am laughing or crying, but I think I am taking it all in stride. This is my second pregnancy and as of today I am 8 weeks and two days along and guess what? My tummy is growing. A lot. It was NOT flat to begin with (heh, heh, wouldn't that have been nice) but it is definately bigger. Today I look pregnant. Even my husband said so. I have no clothes because all of the clothes I could fit last year I have given away as they were too big. So, I am going to hit Target Maternity this weekend. I don't feel too bad as I was in maternity clothes at 10 weeks last time....but really? The pregnant stomach already? The brigh…

Anyway found some really cute shirts & a cardigan for the winter.. all for great prices. They came today, and though I'm not showing they're great for now & later. They're just longer shirts than normal, and I'm tall so it works out. I did buy some summer super sale ones, since I'll be really pregnant by time it gets warm next year.. some tank tops & one that says "Kicking 24/7" hehe. This is my first experience with maternity shirts, so I wanted to support the company I bought from …

This is complicated because I got pregnant the first month I went off of birth control and did not give my body a chance to stabilize. That means that my cycle could have been 4 weeks, 6 weeks, etc . . . and I am not sure. Timing details are as follows: 8/17 Last Birth Control Pill Taken 8/19 Started TOM Cycle 8/21 Finished TOM Cycle 9/15 Negative Pregnancy Test 9/18 Negative Pregnancy Test 9/21 Negative Pregnancy Test 9/22-9/23 Bad Cramping (Maybe Implantation???) 9/25 Negative Pregnancy Test 9/27 Extremely Faint…

It got to be pretty bad, so I figured I pulled something..went to sleep early, thinking it would be better in the morning. Dead wrong, lost all range of motion, can't bend to save my life.. it's my butt and my tailbone though, not normal lumbar pain. Monday first thing in the morning I went to my chiro. I feel that since its taking us so long already it wouldn't hurt to start trying now. I've lost 23.3lbs already in 4 weeks. For some of you pro lapbanders, what would you say??

I do not know why since Dh and I did not do the right things by b/c last month, but I was under the mistaken impression that since I had fertility issues in the past my 44lbs weight loss would not be that significant. Well, I ws wrong. I am terrified! Terrified of telling my dr since he was adament about waiting for two years. Terrified that I will have to stop jogging which gives me pleasure or that I will be too tired to do it. I am horrified that I am concerned with the weight gain I may experience because for the fir…

I started bleeding yesterday afternoon and called the doctor right away as I never bled during my first pregnancy. He told me to come in for an ultrasound and exam. They did the ultrasound and all seemed fine. Then the doctor came in. He told me that he's a little bit concerned over the bleeding and mild cramping I had. But his biggest concern is with my ultrasound. I had one two weeks ago and the baby measures at about 6 weeks. In this ultrasound the baby measured at 7 weeks. It should be measuring at 8 weeks. He's concerned about the lack of growth and that it may be a sign of a future miscarriage. He feels that I have a 50/50 chance of taking this baby to te…

It is worst when I take a deep breath. Like a sharp stab. Do you think this could be heartburn? I have never been pregnant and I am fearful the band may cause me additional problems. I've been at 205 since I found out I was pregnant. I fluctuate a pound or so here or there but I've been a steady 207 for two days now. I'm at 9 weeks. Is it too early for me to be gaining? I noticed I can't fit into some of my pants because of a little belly that I didn't have before. I lost 13 pounds during the first trimester of my first pregnancy because of some awful morning sickness so I'm not sure if this is okay or if I need to lay off the munchies. LOL! Gaining weight is kinda freaky after being banded for 2 years.

I'm seven months post-op, and I'm just 4 weeks pregnant. In fact, I found out that I was pregnant at about 3.5 weeks, which is very early to be producing enough HCG to create a positive home pregnancy test (hmmm. . . wonder if its twins?). My first doctor's appt. is September 15th, which will be my sixth week. I'm wondering what type of prenatal Vitamin everyone is taking? I'm 17 wks now and last night was my second time in the ER getting IV fluids because I'm so dehydrated. The thing that sucks is that everytime I throw up, which is as many as 15 times a day, I have to worry if my band is going to slip. Actually I think it's hanging in there pretty tough. But the only way to confirm that is with x-ray which I refuse to do while pregnant. I'm on acid reflux and anti-nausea medicine but nothing is working. food and liquids go down totally fine. The weird thing is that I have no restriction, nothing is stuck in my band, I've tried not eating for hours before bed and also eating a snack right before bed. Neither makes it better. My port is still hard to get at, which means lots of poking and prodding to get the needle in right. My mom was with me and she swears it took almost 30 minutes. Anyways, I feel much better now being able to eat. I do still feel some restriction, even with it empty, but I'm totally ok with that -- no need to go gaining 15 lbs over the last 7 weeks, right?! The good news is that I can come in for a fill as soon as I want to after delivery! For some reason, I had it in my head that I had to wait 6 weeks. When I asked my surgeon, he said, no, you…

I had to have my little band exchanged for a larger band and my doc seems to believe (as do I) that it is pregnancy related. I had my beautiful, wonderful daughter on March 8th. Literally on March 9th my band tightened up and hardly relented until, well, today. I was able to get it to a barely liveable state, but I knew I was living on the edge. My band obviously had been empty since last October, but I felt the same amount of restriction as being filled, if not more. Like I said, it was "liveable" until I flew to Phoenix, and that sent me over the edge. I had…

Got pregnant through IVF in May 2004. All was well until October 2004 when I suffered an incomplete cervix. My son was born at 22 weeks and died very soon after birth. We did another embryo transfer (from the same lot as our Declan) in spring of 2005, but no luck. So, we waited. I had my band surgery in May 2007 and, after losing and losing and losing, decided to do another transfer. I'm wondering if mine will as I have quite a bit of excess skin and still have a bit if fat padding around my abdomen. Amy

i am approximately 2.5 months pregnant, but my embryo died at 6 weeks. we found out yesterday via an vaginal ultrasound that the embryo does not have a heartbeat. i find out thursday if my blood work confirms it. (my hcg levels have to be going down). i'm devastated. i never knew it would be this hard, but now i have another decision to make. my doctor wants me to decide if i want a d & c or if i want to wait for it to pass. i don't know if i can walk around every day waiting for it to happen. it's hard enough now because i know it is still in there. it's already been several weeks and no sign of miscarriage.
