Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery

Pregnancy after weight loss surgery. Trying to conceive, nutrition, recovery, breastfeeding, and parenting post-op.

  1. Started by luckytoloose,

hi .... i am ten weeks pregnant and well suffering from morning sickness and loss of appetite . i only have one cc in my nine cc band and had no restriction before i got pregnant. I have loss ten pounds since i became pregnant. i am confused whether i need to get my band unfilled or not . my loss of appetite is mostly due to nausea and not because of restriction. also apart from ginger can u suggest some medicine to decrease this sickness.what band complications can happen with this uncontolled vomitting.

In June I went to my gyno for a check up and he saw my scars and I told him about my band. He said that his banded patients do GREAT with pregnancy. He said that the only thing you have to watch is that you're getting enough nutrients because of absorbtion issues. So I'm thinking he's got lapband and bypass surgery confused. So then I went for a fill and the PA at the weight loss clinic asked me if I'm taking my chewable Vitamin. I said no, I just take a regurlar vitamin as they don't seem to get stuck. She says oh well you should take the chewable because the body absorbs them better. Now I'm confused. Does the band have any impact on how the body absorbs the n…

I just got my BFP yesterday...Baby number 5 is on its way!!!!.I'm so excited I just wish I had lost more weight first...At this point I don't think I'll need a unfill since I was in desperate need of a fill...I had gained back about 10 pounds in the last 2 months or so...Hopefully this will give me motivation to really watch EVERYTHING that goes in mouth now....

  4. Hi all, I was just banded on 07/07 and one of the reasons I wanted to get the band was to potentially help in becoming pregnant. I had NO problems getting pregnant with my son 7 years ago, but I was A LOT smaller than I am now. I just turned 38 and am not getting any younger and DH and I want to have another baby. My questions are how long did you wait before ttc and how much weight did you lose before becoming pregnant?

I need your advice.... I got my lap band refilled about 2 weeks ago, although I have started to lose weight again, I am getting leg cramps at night, the shakes and I have had a bout of mastits. I am also starting to feel emotionally unstable. My husband thinks I am not eating enough and thats contributing to my state of mind and also to the fact my baby does not seem settled. Both my obgyn and band doctor think I am eating enough. I really want to maintain breast feeding. My husband wants me to get my fill removed and say "screw" it to weight gain during breast feeding and worry about it later. What do y'all reckon

Hi everyone! I am 27 years old, married in June of 2008. I am getting banded on tuesday January 6th 2009. The reason I am having this done is so that I can be healthy enough to have a baby. It will be my first. This is where things get a bit weird. You see I am a teacher of students with special needs. I teach kids with autism, downs syndrome, cerbral palsy, etc. and I ADORE my job. However, I am naturally paranoid about having a child with a disability and want to take all precautions while I am pregnant. Has anyone heard anything about this band creating any type of birth defects or complications with the pregnancy. I know it may not be what everyone wants to talk about…

Ok. Well I'm very new to the lap band and was (am) scheduled for my second fill on Monday, June 15th. I just found out today that I am pregnant. (We have been trying and are SO excited). I guess losing those 18.5 lbs really did work after all. Although I didn't believe them when they told me it could. My question is, what's the likelyhood of my doctor pulling all the Fluid out of my band when I go in on Monday. I would really like to lose some additional weight before I start gaining it back. I am super scared to gain a ton of weight will I'm pregnant even though I know they can put the fluid back and I will eventually lose the weight again. Its really the thoug…

Has anyone breastfed in the process of getting the band? my daughter is 10 months old and a great eater, so its not imparative that I continue but I would like to finish the last 2 months out like the American Academy of Peds suggests.. Heres my issue.. for the 2 week pre-op diet I was allowed to be on a diet of regular foods, low carb 1600 cal. becuase all the breast feeding studies say not to drop below that. then today (3 days before my surgery) my Nutritionist said she wants me to do liquids for 2 days before (I know nice warning!) I know its susposed to be low-carb but the low carb liquid diet I have has only 800 cal. you can see my delimma.. does anyone know how …

I just found out that I'm pregnant. I'm guessing that I'm around 5 weeks. I was banded last September. I'm soo excited and I know I need to do some reading on how do manage the band and the pregnancy. Currently I only have 2cc's in my band because I was having problems and they did a complete unfill and I just got 2 cc's in a few weeks back. My next appointment is July 1st and I'm trying to decide either to cancel it, schedule it a little later, or just going and talk to the Dr. I want more put in because I have no restriction an don't want to gain a lot more back. Those that are pregnant, or were pregnant with the band, did you have to have unfill, you staye…

  12. I am so excited to report that I got a BFP this morning (11 days past ovulation). It was totally shocking. I've had no symptoms other than feeling "wierd" and having a little nausea, which I attributed to just having a few "bad lapband" days (I usually feel a little queasy if I eat something that doesn't sit well). I have that dreaded bitch, PCOS, but since being banded my cysts have gone away- Thank God! But my doctor cautioned that the underlying condition is always there so it might be more difficult for me to get pregnant anyway. On top of my annoying ovary issues, hubby had low sperm counts (actually his counts were zero before he went to a urologist for treatmen…

  13. Hi everyone, It has been a while since I came in to LBT. Just wanted to show off my little one. Because of Lapband, that why I was able to get pregnant and now spent most of my time caring for my little bundle of joy. It has been tiresome, but wonderful in it's own way... I have a question that I hope fellow 'banders will be able to help me with. I'm now breastfeeding and eating more than usual to help replenish the calories burned. I gave birth 6 weeks ago (via C-section) and thinking about going back to get the band fill. I was just wondering, since I'm breastfeeding, would my daily diet be different? 14. I was banded on Oct. 30th, 2008 and I've only lost 41lbs since then. (sadly, I still have 100lbs to go) I know that it's still really early to be wanting a baby so close to my surgery, but I'm just wondering how long everyone waited and how much weight most of you lost before you decided to try and start having babies. My doc told me that he wants me to wait at least a year to a year and a half before I start trying for a baby again. (I have a 2yr old son now.) But, I really miss being pregnant and I really want another baby incredibly bad! I'm hoping that by the 1st of next year I will be close enough to my goal weight that I'll be able to start trying again. I also …

  15. I am banded and am 29 weeks pregnant. I am planning on giving birth naturally (no meds) and would really prefer to give birth at a birth center or at home rather than at the hospital. however, because I am banded, I don't know if this is feasible. My OB doesn't have any experience with bands, so he's not any help. I've emailed my band doctor, but I don't know if he will reply to me. What I'm wondering is if any of you who have had babies while banded have had any labor complications DUE TO THE BAND. I can't really imagine how the band might interfere with labor, but would like to know either way. If you read this and didn't have any band complications, and es…

Just curious to know if there are any bandsters that are near myself in pregnancy. Everything seems to be going fine with me.. other than some port pain. I know I've very early in but it's strange how it feels. When I went for an unfill after confirming the pregnancy, the doctor said that's normal. I'm a year out. Other than that, I'm doing great! Have slacked off of exercise but started back today. I am still a long way from goal so I'm going to try and be healthy first of all... but try not to gain too much. Would love to hear from others who are expecting.

Hello! I am 27, was banded in January of 08 and have lost about 100lbs. My husband and I decided we were ready to start our family, and have obviously gone through the recomended year after surgery to do so. I have struggled with PCOS my entire adult life, and haven't been on BC for the past 3 months (no periods either) so my doc prescribed Provera to "kick start" menstration, then followed with 50mg of Clomid for days 5-9 of my cycle. Anyone else gotten prego with this regiment? What can I expect? We are super anxious to have a baby! Any thoughts or wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, all. I am new to the forum. I found it while searching for information on pregnancy with the band. I was banded Thanksgiving of '08 and just found out that I am pregnant!!! My other two children are about to turn 13 and 15. So, we're a little shocked to say the least. :w00t: Anyway, I was told that I would have to be unfilled for pregnancy. However, when I went back to my surgeon he said that it wouldn't be necessary at this point. I only have about 1.5cc's in my band (He believes in slow and cautious fills) and have lost ~66lbs. to date. I would like advice from other bandsters who haven't been unfilled (and well any others really). What kind of eating pl…

Well, I just found out 2 weeks ago that I am pregnant. I will be 6 weeks tomorrow and am scheduled for my first ultrasound on Wednesday. Here's the thing...I only had my surgery in January, so its only been about 4 months. We weren't trying either. I have to admit, we weren't preventing it even though they warned us of improved fertility as I lost weight. I really thought we were safe because my weight was not the only thing standing in the way. My husband has his own issues and I also have endometriosis which has scarred me in addition to the PCOS issues. We were told it wouldn't be possible by ourselves at all! I called my surgeon's office a week ago and haven't…

  20. I have currently put on 15 kilos (about 33lbs) duringthis pregnancy. Alot of people keep telling me that if I breast feed it will all come off quickly. Except, with my last baby breast feeding wasn't that easy and its not always a guarantee of losing weight anyway:mellow: So I am thinking this thread will be good for some support after baby to get back on track. I am planning to get my band refilled pretty quick after I have my baby, I am planning on going up in small amounts though, i would hate to be overfilled and breastfeeding, that woudl be a nightmare.

Hello. On May 6th I found out that I was pregnant. (We had been trying). May 13th I lost the baby. I know that it's not the fault of the band...I have been having trouble not turning to food in this time of Grief. That would have been what I would have done without the band. All I want to do is eat...eat and eat and eat until it doesn't hurt anymore, but I know I can't. Has anyone else misscarried after having the lap band? How did you cope? What helped you. By the way I am 22 and they told me after I had my son that I may not be able to get pregnant again and that if I did I would most likely misscarry or be high risk. Okay, so I have decided to have the Lap Band surgery and I was hoping that it could take place next month, since I'm a self pay patient the process should go a little quicker. Well, now there's a possibility that I could be pregnant (I'm a couple days late and my period is usually like clock work). If I'm pregnant (it would be our first baby) how soon after do you think I could be banded? Does anyone have any knowledge on this topic? I'm sorry if I sound a bit disappointed, its not that I don't want to have a child but I've been really excited about the opportunity to be banded. I have not been banded yet, but we are looking at a possible surgery date in late May/early June. I am breastfeeding my son and plan to do so until he turns 1 in August. Does anyone has any experience with breastfeeding with the band? Do they not do as many fills so you can get the extra calories that are needed? Luckily I will only have a couple months left of breastfeeding, but it is not something I plan on stopping until August. Thanks

I had my band tightened at the beginning of April. There was restriction, probably a little more than there should have but I was fine with it. I would throw up very little and not too often. About 3 weeks ago, the throwing up increased so much that no matter what I ate, it would come back. There were times that even liquids were impossible. My boyfriend kept insisting to me to go get the band loosened but as I see it, I refuse to pay to have it loosened, only tighter. Last week I found out that I am almost 6 weeks pregnant. Would the increase in throwing up and being nauseous have to do with the pregnancy or did somehow my band just become more tighter? The throwing…

I have been waiting for what seems like forever to even start trying so I keep thinking I have all these symtoms and they have turn out to be in my head for the last two months. This month however I'm in the two week wait and I've have noticed the vains in my arms, legs, and especially breast have become noticable. I've never seen this before so I'm wondering if anyone else had this as an early pregnancy sign. Has anyone ever heard of this?

Some gained more than they should have, but so do alot of nonbanded pts. All did great medically. Most had some fluid released from their bands..I hope this is encouraging to all of you.

  47. I was all set to have my surgery last summer when I found out I was pregnant. Does anyone know how long after a c-section until you can be banded? Thanks!

I was banded 10/07 and I'm down about 70 pounds. Admittedly I have not been eating well the last few months and I think I need to get another fill. My DH and I are also trying to get pregnant soon. So my question is... should I get another fill now, only to have it taken out if/when we get PG? The more I could lose before getting PG the better, right?? And one I do get PG, do they take out your fill immediately? Someone told me at the end of the 1st trimester but I thought they would do it right away. Any pregnancy/banding advice is appreciated!

I honestly didn't think I would get pregnant so soon after going off the pill, and figured that if I did get pregnant without actively trying that it was meant to be. I called my band doctor last week and he said he didn't see any…
