Well what a journey just deciding to have this surgery has been! My insurance made me go to seven consecutive doctor appts to discuss weight and I'm so glad they did because I FINALLY feel good about my decision to get sleeved! I really really REALLY went back and forth with this and thought I would never decide, but one day it just finally hit me. I am 48 years old. I am exactly like my dad (personality, build, etc) and he had SO many health problems in his later years before he died, many of which were related to his weight. Plus I already suffer from various ailments already which he did NOT at this age. So I'm done thinking about it, I finished the 7 appts, they …

Hi everyone! I have recently decided to make a change in my life. I just got married and I was looking back on wedding pictures and in a sense it kind of upset me. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. Needless to say I have tried everything. I was not the weight I wanted to be on my wedding day I am 20 years old with a BMI of 45 and a weight of 300. I have recently made the decision to go ahead and talk to someone about the procedure. My husband and I discussed what I had researched and we both think it would change my life for the better! I need all and any advice I can get. Where do I begin? Who do I talk to? I also have a heart condition which was broug…

Hello! My name is Jennie and I'm a teacher from Des Moines, IA. I started looking into WLS almost 18 months ago, and started the 6 month preparation process 3 different times, but had to abandon it twice because of confusion about whether or not I fit the criteria and then later because of a change in my insurance criteria. (I know that sounds really confusing-- and it was. It turns out that the second time I started, I would have been fine to continue, but my clinic misunderstood changes in the insurance criteria.) Either way, here I am, just one appointment away from the last of my six month diet/nutrition appointments. Upon reviewing my chart, it seems that I actu…

On October 1st my mom went to Mexico to have surgery with Dr. Garcia. They did the surgery and released her to the hotel. The next day she was readmitted with fluid in her lungs where they proceded to evaluate and diagnos her with pneumonia. She spent the next 4 days in the hospital basically with an IV and left in bed to "recover". She flew home on the 6th. When I picked her up at the airport her left side of her dress was soaked from a leaking incision, her legs were swollen, hot and shiny and she looked really bad. I had the verticle sleeve done on me on Sept 11th so I am still healing and all of this is fresh in my mind as I am only 3 weeks ahead of her with the…

HI...I have been viewing this forum for some time now and have finally decided to post :-) I was sleeved on Oct 8th, so I am 11 days out and down 25lbs! However I am having a lot more trouble with the post op diet than I ever anticipated and was hoping for some advice and support today. My pre-op diet was normal healthy low fat foods...but for the last 2 weeks Ive been on clear liquids + protein shakes. and OMG I want to eat something already!!! I am having so much trouble getting even a portion of the protein shakes in as well. So last night I caved and had 3 tiny bites of a meatball...not my proudest moment! I really hope I didnt screw anything up! It went down fine an…

I got sleeved on the 11th of Oct. However my journey for weight loss have been a long one. I've tried everything Nut diets after diet trainer pills shakes. I would lose but gain it right back smh it was a very depressing cycle I couldn't move the way I use to couldn't play with my kids we had to rearrange family activities so I could participate. I had to suck it up and admit I couldn't do this on my own that's why I got sleeved.

Hey there.. I have one more visit with my surgeon before my surgery next month. I asked her tuesday if she does the swallow test, in which she said she doesnt...she explained that she uses the drain to watch for certain fluids the 2 days after the surgery, to let her know there is a leak..she hasnt ever had a leak, knock on wood....she had stated that she didnt like to make patients go thru that nasty tasting berium swallow since we would already be tortured enough with a month on liquids.....i was just wonderign what you guys thought..im happy shes leak free, but maybe that sense of knowing would be worth the bad taste/experience.....i also dont have to do an endoscop…

I started my process on July 5, 2012. My surgery was on July 26. All went well. Doctor had me off for 2 weeks post op. Went back to work for a day and a half. On that second day I started experiencing vomiting and a severe shoulder pain. Went to the ER, had an xray and upper GI. Leak was detected and was rushed to my surgical hospital 6 hours away. Spent the next 6 weeks in the hospital having various non-invasive surgeries. Out now. 100lbs down. Feeling better.

Anyone else extremely depressed post op? I'm 10 days out and am completely mentally drained. Physically I feel fine, but i've never felt so hopelessly depressed in my life. I feel fatter now then I did pre op and simply want to run away. Anyone else experience this? I feel hopeless.

Hello My name is Brandie, I just got the surgery on October 11, 2012. I am so happy with my choice of getting it done as i have struggled for the last 15 years with my weight and finally had had enough and went on to discover the option of getting the lap band. Tricare at first last year said no to paying for it, but after a year I had a LOT of health problems come up and it was enough for Tricare to decided to pay for it. Tricare is the military insurance that we carry and its hard to get approved for the surgery as not only do you have to be at least 200 % over your suggested weight, but you also have to have 1-2 of the following condition's - High BP, arthritis in hip…

Hello everyone, I have finished my preop appointments and just got my approval for surgery :-D... Unfortunately I still have to wait because my surgery is not until January 2013. :-( That feels like so far away, but I am glad I found this site. I am still scared especially for when I have to do the liquid diet before surgery. I know that it's not going to be easy but I hope to find someone néw fiends here and get some helpful advice. Does anyone have any suggestions on good tasting Protein? Or at least one that does not leave such a chalky after taste? Marilyn

Hi! My name is Felecia and I have been a member for 3 years. I have not had the lap band, the insurances I have had over the past 3 years would not cover it. Fast forward to now, my insurance will now cover it!! Yeah, now that I have a BMI of 45!! I am starting the process that my insurance and my Dr. want me to follow. I have to see a nutritionalist for 6 months and discuss and follow a 1500 calorie diet and exercise program. I also have to see my Dr. (who is also my nutritionalist) to discuss any health problems I might be having. I have to see a psychologist to discuss the pros and cons...and I have to see my lap band Dr to make sure I am following along with t…

Ok - so I started this journey in August - I haven’t even met the surgeon yet - I decided VSG because I initially thought lapband - but have discovered that my surgeon only does 3 surgeries - VSG, Band, RYN - so in typical webmd fashion - I’ve self diagnosed and figured out what I’m going to do. I 100% admit I could be wrong and I will make a case for VSG over anything else mostly because of this place. TODAY was what I THINK is the 3rd of 6 appointments with my PCP. My insurance covers Bariatric surgery 100/0 copay - but the group requires 6 mo of dr visits (I LOVE MY DR) and 6 mo of NUT visits...next week will be number 3 of the nut -- no one could answer if August …

This is a bit of a carry over from another topic I am participating in, but the conversation we were all having made me very curious. I would like to see how much of a factor having faith in God matters to those who have had the surgery or are in the process of having the surgery. Personally, my having this surgery is totally dependant on my faith in God and His will for my life. I have been praying and seeking God on this issue since I first started looking into it. Throughout the process there have been open doors that I have taken as signs that it is ok for me to proceed. Of course the biggest one will be insurance approval and if I wind up not getting approved, then…

Hi everybody! My surgeon suggested that I go to this website as it's a great source of information, support, etc. I only ust started this particular journey last week, with my first visit with my surgeon, nutritionist, and insurance advocate (called a Navigator). I haven't completely decided whether or not to have the surgery and to be honest, I'm not sure what's holding me back. I spoke with my therapist about it yesterday and we determined that I'm probably afraid of the change it will bring about. Most people don't handle change well and I'm no different. It takes me a little while to get acclimated and for the change to become a new normal. So, I think a lot o…

It's sad that at 26 I have no energy! I'm a full time student (graduate May 2012) yay! I work full time and I'm a mommy!!! I'm drained at the end of the day and I'm at my heaviest I've ever been in my life!! It's scary and since I got high blood pressure after my pregnancy... I'm looking to better my life being healthy for me and my daughter. I hope this November or December is the surgery date. I need to go to my psychological appointment and see how it goes after that. Reading everyone's stories truly inspires me!!
