In 2010 and at my highest weight (315 lbs), I was told by my primary care doctor that because of health conditions related to my weight, there was a big possibility that I would not see my daughter graduate from high school. I think of this as my wake up call and is when I asked about bariatric surgery options. After much research and discussions with my family, I decided to go with gastric banding and had the surgery in April 2011. It has been a bumpy road caused by issues with my port and even though I have not reached my goal weight, I know the surgery was the best decision I could have made for myself because I am healthier. I no longer have diabetes or high blood pr…

Yes, I like to hear the positives as well as the negatives. However, don't encourage others not to do one then the other. There is complications with any surgery. Even if its a removal of your tonsil. Things happen and we hope the best and pray for success. People generally knows the risks, trust and believe me when I say, "Your surgeon will or have sat with you to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of all the W.L. procedures...at least the one you've chosen or was recommended." This site is a support site, keep stories coming good or bad, however, don't discourage others not to do it because you or someone you know may have had complications. Again, with any surger…

I finished all of my pre op requirements by 11/05/13, my primary care Dr. decided to add another test that was not required by my insurance or surgeon, I ended up having to do a stress test on 11/19/13 and was advised yesterday that I will need to have a catheter placed in order to have the surgery, this isn't done until 12/12/13 and I will need to be on blood thinners for a month after that which will make it an additional 6 weeks before I can even work towards a surgery date. I know that my primary care Dr. is doing the right thing but I can't help but to feel down and a little discouraged by the delay, I was expecting to have my surgery by mid December but instead I wi…

Hello All, I just joined Bariatric Pal today! Looking forward to getting to know you all. I'd like to hear from men who have had single incision sleeve gastrectomy. I hope to have my surgery in January or February, with one of the few practices in the metro New York area that performs SILS. I'm really concerned that I won't be eligible for SILS. The vast majority of patients who have this surgery are women, and apparently the single incision approach is more difficult to perform on men. I tend to get hypertrophic, hyperpigmented scars, so I want as few new holes as possible! I'd appreciate hearing from guys who can tell me what the evaluation process was like. …

Whether I get the sleeve or band, I would like to tell my banders, "Thank you! from day one for all the support and advice. I made a few friends here and I enjoyed taking with you guys. I've been on the sleeve forum lately, but had to stop by and read what's good with my friends...hehehe. Ok, carry on."

Hi , I'm 8 months post op with gastric sleeve. Also, I am a pescotarian( eating fish only twice week.. Been vegetarian for 2 years only eating fish to get my Protein in). Post surgery I weighed 298. I now weigh 243 but I have gained 11 pounds in the last two weeks. I have had two spine surgeries and I have another disc issue. I cannot really exercise how I wold like. I can walk but I love to jog. It seems like walking take too long. Plus, now I can't jog because of the spine. So , I am overrating because of the condition of my health( I'm an extrovert and now I'm not working at home all day because of the pain). I know this is not an excuse. Today, I began the five day…

Hello, My name is Kate, I'm 22 years old, I weigh 16 stone 7 lbs, height: 5 ft 2, bmi: 42.3, I have been trying to lose weight for 6 years now on a calorie restricted diet of 1600 calories a day and complete 6-10 hours of cardio and strength exercises a week. I have not lost weight once during this time and have been on every diet plan and pill given to me by my doctors and had every blood test done to no avail. About a month and a half ago my doctor referred me to the decision maker for gastric banding on the NHS [no news yet], I would like some information from people who have had the band done regarding time scales: -before a decision is reached, -usual waiting time f…

Today, November 19th 2013 marks one year since my sleeve gastrectomy! I am 140 pounds down and without any regrets! I am so grateful that I had this second chance at a healthy life!!!!! I took some time today to recognize my friends and family for all of the incredible support and encouragement that I've been provided with during this amazing journey. Nothing about this adventure has been easy, but it certainly has been worthwhile. <3 The picture left is me BEFORE, one year ago at my highest weight- 296 pounds. The right is me NOW at 156 pounds. I still want to lose about 16 more to weigh in at 140 pounds

I'm really frustrated. I met with the psychiatrist today. We spent about 30-45 mins with her handing me paperwork and me filling it out. Then she sat down and asked me a few questions, she did not look me in the eye and even cut me off a few times b/c she just wanted yes / no answers. Then she said, well I'm not sure you are a good candidate for this surgery. I asked her why and she said, oh well because you are an emotional eater and as you said you tend to "fall off the wagon". I said, yes that is why I am in this situation. If I could stick to my diet for life then I would not need this surgery. She kept saying she was concerned about safety, but when I p…

Have my band since may 2012. I have lost about 70 pounds. I feel like I can never have a vegetable, a salad, fruits, healthy food. I have many days where I can't eat a meal at all and I am drinking coffees , having chocolate or something not good for me. Even if I take the smallest bite I cannot eat the above food mentioned. I got the band to make healthier choices. I am stuck now and not losing. Basically staying the same I want to make healthier choices ! Help

Hi, my name is Robyn and I had my vertical sleeve surgery on 11/11/13. I have lived through the first week, the gas pain and am feeling almost normal. It was wonderful to eat some grits and oatmeal and not feeling hungry all the time. The 2 week diet prior to surgery was something I did because that was what was required. It was tough, I felt hungry most of the time, was discouraged that the weight seemed to slowly change but was nothing compared to what I thought it would be with so little intake. The gas pain after the surgery was the worst of the surgery but that changed and became better every day. I am looking forward to slowly increasing the food options and c…

I'm 35, 5'4 240 lbs and am in the authorization process with my insurance company. I have already done my homework with my insurance company so I know I will be approved but I'm scared out of my mind and excited for what's to come. I have heard so many conflicting stories regarding LB and the GB... I am leaning toward the LB and I am well aware that my weight loss will be slower than that of whom has GB.. I just want to hear people with LB tell me their success stories to motivate me even more. One way I have made myself more accepting of going the slower route is telling myself that any weight loss is good weight loss. I just need advice on what to expect, post surgury…

I had my surgery on Thurs. November 14 2013. I went in with the hopes that it wouldn't be any worse than having my gallbladder removed. However when I came too, I realized that they had to also remove a hiatal hernia. Wasn't sure what that meant, but still was hopeful. I came home and slept off the anesthesia. Once I awoke, I realized my hopes were not happening. My shoulders definitely were hurting from the gas, to the point that I couldn't lay down flat in the bed. Instead I had to sit up on the couch and sleep. My stomach was also sore, but that was the least of my pain at that point. I started trying the Protein shakes, and they were almost unbearable to drin…

Miss Mac here. I got my official sleeve date today - December 23, 2013. Finally....I am so excited. Now, about this combined website....I am not liking it much. They won't let me use my previous moniker of Miss Mac until I make a certain number of posts. It seems harder to follow a thread, posts are multiplied, fewer people seem to be using the site now. Just venting.

Hello, My name is Erin. I am new to this site, and just starting out on this journey to the Gastric Sleeve. I have my first appointment with my surgeon next week, and am nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time. I have been heavy my entire life, but once I had 3 kids the weight just kept piling on and has been so hard to loose. I have thought about this surgery many many times, I even saw a surgeon and started going through clearances for the surgery about 2 years ago, but I dont know what it was that made me change my mind. I now realize that was a huge mistake! This is something that I need to do. I am going to be 30 years old in about a month, and some days …

My nurse (24 hr on call) tells me people have "trouble" with certain foods and not to eat them. IE rice for one. What she doesn't say is why we should not eat it and what happens if we do. I have NO trouble swallowing anything but what I do have is br problems from a variety of foods. Is this why we shouldn't eat rice because we end up with diarrhea from it? I have other stomach issues so I never know if it's those problems or my band. Does anyone know?
