POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by HBZK,

Hi everyone! I had my surgery on August 9th and and was wondering how many calories should I consume per day at this stage? I’d also like to understand a little bit about the typical quantities of meals. I was told by my nutritionist that I should aim for 4-6 oz per meal and eat every 3 hours but I’m struggling to get down more 3 tsp per meal, is this normal at this stage post-op?

  2. Started by Autumnrayne,

Let me stress that I am consuming plenty of water, exactly enough protein, and I’m following the full liquid diet to perfection. I’m using sugar free, lactose free, fat free, high protein milk for my protein shakes. I’m eating sugar free jello, and low sodium, low fat soup that is blended and strained. I’m active, up and moving around… but I’ve lost nothing. Literally, nothing. What is going on?

Hi all, I got surgery on 8/9/21 and for the last couple of weeks everything has left super heavy on my stomach. I have been vomiting a lot and can’t seem to keep anything down fully. It feels like the food is getting stuck in my throat almost. I should be on the soft food diet, but can’t really seem to even get through puréed. Did anyone else struggle like this at first? I’m having trouble getting enough nutrients and water and these dang vitamin chews are disgusting! Please help lol. Thank you!!

Hi everyone! I had surgery 8/30 so I’m almost two weeks post-op. I am currently in PMSing, but for lunch I was able to get down 3 oz of soup and a 4 oz Two Good yogurt before I decided to stop eating. Is this normal? I’ve been so hungry lately but am trying to stick to my soft foods phase and make good choices, but I don’t feel “full” very fast on soup/yogurt. Am I eating too much?

I have my bypass Wednesday afternoon. I know I just had major surgery and don’t expect to be painless but I just wonder when it takes a turn for the better? I have hard time getting up by myself and the most pain isn’t near any incision, it’s to the left of my belly button where I assume they cut the intestine.

First…. I 100% support YOUR decision to tell people about your surgery or not. I am in no way saying you should or should not…. I recently went on a trip and on this trip I had to show my old ID a few times. When I applied to TSA PreCheck I got a triple take when they looked at my passport photo vs the new me… so I explained… then on the trip I just decided to preemptively say “yeah I’ve lost a lot of weight since then” when they looked at my ID. Twice I had the person (quietly) ask “mind if I ask how? It’s none of my business I’m just wondering.” Both times I told them the truth, both times they said they’ve been thinking about it. Both times they smiled when I told th…

I had surgery on Monday 8/30. Since then I have had 1 of my 6 incision site continuously been extremely painful. It's the only site that's bruised, steri-strip is bloody and it hurts soooo much. When ever I move or have to engage that part of my core (sitting up, going to the bathroom, laying in bed, even just standing up) it hurts. It's like a burning, sharp ripping feeling and it legit makes me see stars and lose my breath. I called and sent a photo to my doctor and they said it was normal. They gave me a stronger pain medication but it only makes me high and doesn't tough the pain when I move. Could they have stitched me up a little off? Anyone else experience this? I …

Our school allows for zoom classes only for covid. I’m going to wear a mask as always as well I am vaccinated. However, they are making a big deal about me wanting to go to class online via zoom versus in person. I have my surgery next Wednesday, when do you think I could realistically ride in a car for 30 minutes each way and sit in a 1 hr 45 minute class? My surgery is a laparoscopic revision

  12. Started by Tobin1260,

I had my gastric bypass revision on August 26, 2021 which was 3 days before Cat 4 Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans. I live just outside of New Orleans. Due to the hurricane, for several days, it was impossible to buy the food I needed. Everything was sold out. And Amazon isn’t able to deliver packages due to damages. Also I gained 12 lbs. following my surgery. I have not cheated on the diet and I’m hoping it’s fluid buildup. I have left my nutritionist many voice mails starting August 30. I have also left voice messages for my doctor. I haven’t heard from either one of them. Also when I was discharged, the nutritionist gave me a 5 page hand out. She didn’t explain anything. …

  13. Hi all, did anyone develop Night Eating Syndrome since surgery?

  14. While taking a breather on a bush walk, my friend, also a sleever, asked me this question. I actually was glad it wasn’t just me but neither of us had any idea why we sometime woke during the night with a painfully dry mouth. Not thirsty just awfully dry mouth. The discomfort actually wakes us. We both thought it was because we were sleeping with our mouths like just hanging open but not breathing through our mouths. We both hold mouthfuls of water trying to rehydrate our mouths. Are we alone in this? Any ideas why? Is it because we don’t have fat necks anymore which maybe kept our mouths propped close?

I am almost 6 months out from my sleeve surgery. I’m down 76lbs!! You are pre-warned, this is a thread on poop and poop problems, lol. I am having bowel movements (BM) every 3 days on average sometimes 2 days or 5-6 days. They’re hard BM too. I am taking stool softener every night, minimum 64 ounces of water daily, 8tsp of fiber daily in the water, pro/pre biotic daily. I don’t know what to do differently/add/subtract. Im terrified of laxatives because I don’t want to start them and not be able to go without them. Any recommendations or advice based on your experience? ?

I’m looking for someone who is further out than I am who can tell me how to enjoy food again. At each sitting I can only get less than 2 ounces down and that’s only protein. Once I eat the protein there’s no room for anything else. I haven’t eaten any veggies yet because I’m only getting between 20-30 g of protein in per day. Water is nauseating to me but I push hard to get it in but again, I’m nowhere near the 64 ounces that is required. Forget protein shakes! Since surgery I cannot tolerate them at all! I’m just wondering if this will get better with more time?

I had surgery March 3, 2021. I was 268 at the beginning of my journey and 262 at the time of surgery. I am 173 as of today. I know I have lost weight but when I look into the mirror I see the same size pre surgery.

Another query that comes to mind is post-op inflammation. I read that several natural remedies can aid in the process of healing and inflammation such as curcumin, ginger, and CBD. Has anyone dealt with this or has any experience? Please share

  22. Hi there! I’m almost about 8 weeks out post gastric sleeve and I am definitely noticing the hair loss! lol I know this is just temporary & it grows back but I would love to get something that could help me in the meantime. Does anyone have any recommendations of anything that worked for them? Thanks so much in advance! :) Also feel free to comment things that DIDN’T work either so I know not to consider them as an option.

Has anyone else had issues with food or drink getting stuck? Stuck so that its acting as a stopper/cork. If I drink water, I have to wait a while before taking another drink. If I don't wait, it just won't go down, and I have to spit it out. I literally can't swallow it. The same thing is happening with food also. I also noticed that when I eat, I get excessive phlegm and have to continually spit out into my napkin in between bites.

I had my surgery back in August of last year. While it’s been a challenge, I’ve seen great results. However over the past few months I have seen some significant hair loss. I don’t have any bald spots, but there is a noticeable thinning out. I’m taking my daily vitamins I am not sure what to do, if anything. Any advice?

  27. Started by cellbell,

I'm just over two weeks out from surgery and started soft foods yesterday (my program doesn't have purees). I was excited to start eating again but I'm not feeling the fullness I expected. My portions have been about 1/4 cup of cottage cheese or refried beans etc, and last night I had a 1/2 cup of turkey chili. I don't have trouble tolerating it but I feel exactly the same before and after eating--not hungry but not full either. Is this just because everything is still healing? I've been able to drink water in bigger sips than I expected too (not on purpose!) so I have this irrational thought that the surgeon screwed up.

  28. I had my surgery on Friday (8/20) and I woke up from surgery very hungry. I thought that the surgery would help end hunger for the first year. I'm hydrated, I just want the hunger to end. Any suggestions?

I was sleeved on Wednesday the 11th, and really didn't experience much pain from my incisions. However, I woke up today with swollen, red, horribly painful arms. I'm icing them and taking my pain meds every four hours, but curious if anyone else has experienced this. Infection? Bruising from the arm boards that held me onto the OR table? If it's not better tomorrow I'm heading to the doc.

  30. Hi, all. I’m three months post-sleeve and it has been a smooth journey thus far. No food restrictions (not even bread or chicken breast), easy healing, and steady loss. However, now that I’m incorporating more intense exercise, I notice I can feel my large incision when I’m doing ab exercises. It’s not pain, but I definitely know it’s there. Anyone else experience this?

  31. Hi Peeps, 40m here. I'm 7 days post op and got my bowels moving about 2 days back. However , after passing motion, I'm noticing a brownish rectal discharge staining my underwear. Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this and whether this resolves on its own or is something to be concerned about. It's a bit embarassing especially if I'm wearing light coloured clothing. Please help !!!

So a chipotle just opened up near me and I used to love their food (whatever… it’s a personal preference like favorite color) and thought “why not.” Eating off of it two meals a day I got to day four and still had some left. By that point the guac was looking a little scary so I chucked it. Just found it amazing that there was a time not too long ago where I could down that tortilla swaddled baby in one sitting and still have room for chips and a drink. It was less than 200 calories (when divided by 8) but it was really dense so I couldn’t eat much at each “meal.” Makes it pretty reasonable from a price/meal standpoint too. Like I said… the only point I have here is it’…

Newbie here! I got my VSG on July 24th of 2021. (Just 6 days ago) and I am currently on the Liquid stage. Though my surgeon is great, he wasn't very helpful about my concerns. Firstly, I still get random, sharp stomach cramps. Nothing too painful - just uncomfortable. Is this normal? Secondly, I don't feel "full" when I drink my 2 ounces of water, or my shakes (100 ml per meal). It is only when I am not drinking when I feel pressure or stomach cramps. Is this normal? I apologize if this has been answered before but I feel so lost about all this. My surgeon says the stomach cramps are normal for the first two weeks. And I should continue my drinkin…

I’m sure this has been addressed before, and I know it’s a common issue for post op patients, but does anyone know if gastric sleeve patients can take the chocolate sennoside laxatives??? I have some of the ones in the attached picture and I’m hoping I can take them ?

Hello, Just wondering if there are any plant based folks out with suggestions to help with this new journey. I am at the beginning of my 2nd week so far so good.

  36. Right now i take a Multivitamin(2x), biotin(1x), calcium (2x), and b12 (1x). with two extras, apple cider vinegar(1x) and cranberry pill (1x). What are all the vitamins you take in a day? I am trying to make sure i am taking everything I'm suppose to .

  37. I'm several years post surgery, it was in November of 2016 (wow). SUddenly the last coupe of weeks, my torso/stomach area have just felt odd. I'll feel twinges in my back, or in the front, and my stomach is just...laying weirdly? I'ts hard for me to define what I'm talking about, but maybe somebody has some experience. I lost over 130 pounds following the surgery to get down to around 270, and I've put a little bit back on in the last year and a half or so to where I'm hovering between 292 and 300. Any tips? My GP said it's nothing to worry about, just with rerouting the system thre will be oddities. I'm not in pain, but it just feels odd and uncomfortable. …

Has anyone had any experience with phentermine to try to kick start weight loss again after regain? I’ve read a lot about it online (Reddit, where else!) but I’m specially looking for opinions from people who have had WLS. My doctor told me that the key takeaway is that it is an appetite suppressant, and that is how it works. I questioned how effective it would be for me, given that I’ve had a sleeve and essentially have no hunger hormone left in my body — I really haven’t felt “hunger pangs” since my sleeve. She said it should still work for me as it works on the metabolism, etc, in additional to being a suppressant. Had anyone tried this medication AFTER having a sle…

Hello, before I had my gastric sleeve my liver enzymes and ultrasound were normal. I do not have a gallbladder and had that removed many years ago. I do not drink alcohol. I do not eat a ton of fat. However, it's been 4 months post op and my liver enzymes are elevated. I am very scared. I do take tylenol. since my surgery December 4th I have lost 52 pounds. My protein is around 80 per day and my carbohydrate levels are around 10 per day. I have read that little carbohydrates can cause liver enzymes to go up as well as very low calorie diets. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue that also does not have a gall bladder. Thank you in advance

  43. I'm 1 week post op and based on what I've read, the first 2 weeks is liquid stage. My surgeon has a very different 4 phase plan and by day 7 I can start eating soft foods. Runny scrambled egg is fine and cream of mushroom soup or chicken soup goes down fine. What I'm worried about is when I do eat, I get full in like 1 bite. I'm so traumatized by the experience that I dont feel like eating because I'm afraid of the tightness in my chest whenever I do eat and the nauseous feeling I get. I know it's only the beginning for me but I've read on here that even months after the surgery, the amount of food you can eat is very limited and that sounds depressing. And…

  45. Hi, everyone, first of all, English is not my native language, so please, take it easy. I went through Gastric Bypass surgery on May 19th, it's been 45 days today, July 3rd. I found out that I had a stricture 10 days ago (anastomatic stenosis), the diameter of the stricture was 8mm and through endoscopy, the doctor could enlarge it to 12mm. But even after it, it was difficult to eat soft foods, so I was hospitalized once again and yesterday I had my stricture enlarged again, now to 15mm. The doctor told me to eat only pureed foods for 30 days until I get another endoscopy done and see if it's okay to eat solid foods again. So in the best scenario, according to the do…

I’m 4 weeks post bypass and I feel like when I drink water it causes me pain. Almost feels like a terrible gas pain or a hunger pang. But it takes a few minutes to go away. It’s interfering with my hydration. I’m not sure why or what to do. Anyone go through this? Any advice?

  47. Just wondering what everyones experience was like. How much & what did you drink? Did you feel more inebriated than you would have before surgery? How long after surgery did you have your first drink? I'm only 13days post op but I'd really like to have some wine at a wedding in september....I haven't asked my doc how long I have to wait before drinking yet.

Hi all. Is it normal to feel very tied & get tired out very fast when doing anything. Im 2 weeks out and I feel like I may be failing myself by not pushing harder. I was never one to exercise ever. But even little things like house work are so tiring. Should I push harder at this point or should I still be taking my time with this due to healing ? Any advice would be welcome [emoji4]
