POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by KidaandRoux,

So, I just wondering how many oz of water are you able to get in within an hour? I am currently 12 days post op and can get 4 oz in 1 hr. I'm still trying to figure out where to get my protein in. I can not stand any of the Premier Protein even the clear ones. Has anyone tried the baratic pal shot proteins?

  2. Started by SethSnap,

Hello, I just have my surgery on May 28th. My surgeon requires me to be on a 1 month liquid only diet after surgery. Month 2 I am only allowed to be on a puree diet. Month 3 I am only allowed soft foods. I am not able to eat normally again until Month 4. This seems extreme compared to others I've seen on here. What is everyone's thoughts? Is anyone else on as strict of a post op diet as me. I plan on sticking to it because I follow Dr's orders. Currently I do not have hunger no am I having emotional cravings either. (very surprising to me as I was mainly an emotional eater prior to surgery).

  3. Hello everyone, I want to warn people that this might be TMI and if you are uncomfortable with details and personal health, you may want to back out. So yeah, ever since I had my sleeve performed in February, I have had watery to loose stools and I always feel bloated or like I need to run to the bathroom soon. I get the 64 minimum water intake and my meals are almost completely protein. I physically am not to the point yet where I can have non-starchy veggies. I just dont have the ability to eat then PLUS the protein. My surgeon says everything looks good with my recovery during the past 3 post op visits. Has anyone else had these ex…

Has anyone else belly got really swollen, as in flabby swollen? I’m 6 days post-op, it’s not painful, it’s just FLABBY! It’s NOT MY belly, I am concerned something may be wrong, any insight, expirience would help

  5. Started by Studio54,

I am in shock. Up to about 900 calories a day, still getting all of my protein in water in daily. Today is exactly 4 months post op… down 70 POUNDS! ? 284 surgery day, today 214. This is insane. I knew I would lose weight having this done for my reflux, but I never imagined losing it this fast ! I wish I could eat a cheeseburger to slow it down LOL WHEW!!!

  7. Hi, I've seen this product mentioned several times in the forums however I can't seem to find it on the CVS website. Are people still able to buy the chewables of this product? This is all I can find (tablet)... https://www.cvs.com/shop/cvs-health-spectravite-adult-50-tablets-value-size-365ct-prodid-1170337 Any direction you can offer would be appreciated. If you aren't taking this product but are taking a chewable - what are you taking? (Please don't say Flintstones) Thanks, Lara

  8. OK, I know I should not have done this, and I'm not going to do it again. I had a small amount of grits that were restaurant-prepared yesterday morning. They had corn in them, which I was conscious of, but I was thinking that if I chewed it really really well, it would be okay. In the two or three bites of this that I had, I maybe had like.... 6 kernels of corn? I've kept everything down since surgery and I haven't had any issues with it since, and now I'm 24 hours out. But, re: having anxiety, now I'm worried I'm going to get a bowel obstruction from this and die. SO... did anyone else do anything they weren't supposed to do in the puree stage and end up fine…

  9. I don’t know if it is just the vitamin I take or what, and I had vitamin intolerance BEFORE my sleeve, but I am literally having to MAKE myself take these. I TAKE THE Bariatric Advantage soft chews. They taste fine, but damn! Do you guys have any advice? I have actually skipped a few days of vitamins because I would like to NOT feel sick! thanks for any suggestions. Again, I do eat first. Susan

  10. Started by smarks,

On liquid diet first week or two post op, can you drink protein shakes or just broth and clear liquids?

  11. I am hoping someone else can shed light or maybe give me some ideas/an avenue to explore. I had my GB in February of 2020. It has been nearly a year and a half of ups and downs. Roller coasters, a lot of insight and enlightenment. It has been HARD. Like, really, really hard. I am sick nearly every day. Some days, I could eat 2 slices of pizza with no issue (that's RARE and just an example) but other days I can eat 1/4 cup of oatmeal and water and puke violently. I've noticed meat is almost always a no-go. Red meat, especially. In any variation (ground, steak, etc). I usually only crave carbs anymore and I'm constantly thirsty. Let me just make clear just exactly how sick …

Is there a site to find all nutrition facts on all foods. Store bought, cooked, and restaurant food. , I am struggling finding stuff to eat when out because of the I unknown.

  13. Hi all. I've been trying to find a good tasting, easy to stir peanut butter that is also crunchy. I only like crunchy! Ideally I want just peanuts and salt, and no added sugar or artificial sweeteners. I have tried a few (it's hard to find in natural), but I don't eat it often and it settles after a while and is almost impossible to stir. I'm using Jif Natural crunchy right now because it's closest to what I want, but it does have added sugar, which I prefer to avoid. Any suggestions, or tips for stirring natural peanut butter that has settled? Thanks. I know this is rather long winded for being about peanut butter. Lol

  14. Started by ima1989,

Hi guys I had surgery june 10th and my doctor's office never told me to take 2 weeks off. I rested for 10 days and i started to worl again today, but besides that i've had a lot of bloating.i look like i am pregnant tbh. My job its in a office but i do get up constantly to go to the printer. Everything else its just a bit of walk or signing documents. I am still on liquid and i was wondering if foods high on sodium produce bloating??? I feel like i came to work too soon.

  15. So I was sleeved 5/18/2020 and I have lost about 100lbs. I was at 180 in November and then Jan 160 and now 150.. so weight loss obviously slowed down lately. However about 5 months out I noticed my periods were 30 days apart and then 28 as of March last month was 27 and now I am at 21 days between. Should I be concerned? Is this related to my weight loss? Has anyone else gone through this?

  16. Started by Rocio Lopez,

Happy mothers day to all. I am 4 days out and have started my supplements. I noticed the calcium vitamin are huge and they hurt my pouch this morning. What is the best way to take calcium. Looking for brands and form they come in. MANY THANKS .

  17. Started by TamaraS,

How many calories are you eating? Specificly after you start soft foods in the first 3 - 6 months. I am having difficulty finding the right amount of calories to lose weight. btw I am aware of calorie counting and Water + protien intake, those are not issues. I also am not eating carbs - no veggies or fruit but might have minimal carbs coming from non fat sour cream, cottage cheese and other low fat cheeses. I dont get how I am not dropping weight like crazy... So again can you please help me out and give me an idea of where your calories are at, what phase you are in and if you are currently losing weight at that number. Thanks SO much!

  18. I'm in week two after gastric bypass and on pureed foods. I am measuring all of my intake but every time I eat anything I get a dull ache and discomfort in my stomach. I have eaten so slowly but maybe not slowly enough? I haven't had any nausea or vomiting...just stomach pain/discomfort. Any tips on what I'm doing wrong? Oh and the constipation is totally a thing. I'm on Miralax powder every day and Colace and I'm on day three without going. Ugh.

  19. Hey everyone. I have tried to research this but can’t seem to find much info about it and am wondering if anyone else has had to deal with this. I lost 137 pounds since my gastric bypass in feb 2020. I have a lot of loose skin that I’m starting to look into plastics to take care of. But one area that just kind of started bothering me a couple months ago is my butt. I find that I have to be careful how I sit and that I can’t really “rock” from side to side without it feeling like my tailbone is rubbing over something and causing a pinching sort of pain. Like if I’m sitting in my car and we take a turn, your body kind of naturally goes with the turn but I have to hold mysel…

  20. I just realized I was supposed to post this in pre-surgery weight loss. Is there a way for me to move the post? Sorry for the mistake? Hello everyone, I need to lose 50 pounds before I go for my sleeve surgery so I am at a better BMI to make it safer. They set me up with a nutritionist for medical weight loss. Pretty much, I am to have 3 protein shakes a day and 2 small snacks in between like low fat cheese, and egg, low fat yogurt, etc... I have been sticking to this diet completely with no cheats. The first week I did great and lost 10 pounds. I am toward the end of my second week and the scale is showing I am only down point 8... I don't see how th…

My surgery is not listed, but I had the SADI. I was just wondering if anyone is feeling unmotivated to work out? I'm getting my energy back and all necessary vitamins and protein. I think I feel less motivated to work out since I'm already losing weight!!! I'm 3 months post op by the way. Has anyone else dealt with this? thanks Terri

  22. Started by Bella2021,

So I’m 2 1/2 post op and as of yesterday 6/15/21 , anything that I eat or drink is causing a discomfort. If I try drinking water , there’s a discomfort then pain, not to mention food even a salad causes the same discomfort then pain. Anyone else experienced this? And could give an insight to what this might mean? I texted my doctor and waiting for a response but still wondering what this could be.

  23. Started by SunnyinSC,

So I had my RNY surgery on the 8th (yay!). Everything so far has gone really smooth, no complications to really speak of. Gas pain from the surgery itself seems to be gone, walking got all that out by day 2. However, I've noticed that whenever I eat or drink -anything- at all, even water, I get super gassy. My abdomen gets that gassy uncomfortable feeling and it stays for a good while but will eventually dissipate. It's not a huge deal or anything, and it's not really painful, but I was just wondering if this was common, and does it eventually pass? I was expecting it with maybe protein drinks or dairy, but wasn't expecting it with water.

  24. Started by Samym,

Do I count my protein shakes and watery soups as part of my daily liquid, I am supposed to have 60/60 but not sure how to count it.

  25. Started by leebick,

My 5 year surgery date is September 2021. I had an unremarkable recovery from my sleeve surgery. I lost 110 pounds but have put about 15 back on (or had... I have lost 9 of those). The biggest "issue" I had post-surgery was either hiccuping or sneezing when I was full. About a year ago, I started having acid issues. They've progressed to the point of significant GERD. I had been taking a PPI but it stopped working at all... seriously, I wake up at night coughing and gagging because there is stomach acid pretty much in my back teeth! Anyhow, for the last year I've been taking the PPI until it stops working, go off of it for about a month, take it again and it helps a bit b…

I’m post op 17 days from my bypass and am starting my puréed diet..Im finding it very hard to eat any of the foods listed..they do state to eat three meals a day which consist of 2-3 oz of protein a day..and 1/4 cup puréed fruit. This is in addition to The daily water and milk products I’ve already been consuming the first two weeks. I take 2 bites and I feel full..I’m scared to eat to much here..and stretch my stomach...how have others been handling this phase of their diets?

  27. Started by GummyBearQueen,

I recently moved to soft foods, but noticed I wasn’t eating many carbs each day (less than 30 grams). Today I’ve had 10 grams. While I’m not looking to carb load, some carbs are healthy and needed (my program recommends less than 100 each day). I’m just under three weeks post-op. Where did everyone get their carbs early on?

  28. Started by merraculous,

I have noticed a tremendous amount of energy since having my surgery just over a week ago. I am not trying to push it because I do not want any complications. I know that it is extremely early to even have this cross my mind, but to be honest with all of you I feel like I am having the smoothest possible recovery. I have just started having a little bit of yogurt today, and want to be able to jump start some sort of fitness regime while I have this good feeling. I have not been doing much except taking the dogs out for an hour walk around the block. Does any one else have new found energy? Want to work out but know they cant? When is the safest time to start something?

  29. Started by Christina760,

Anyone get really wrinkled saggy skin under chin on neck? If so, do you just deal with it? Does it bother you? Do you use anything that helps the skin tighten? My doc wants $600 for a ultrasonic thing to tighten the skin and I’m considering. Thanks for your response.

  30. Started by Jaye W,

I am 2 days post op sleeve. I keep having a sneezing fit - 2-4 in a row when drinking. Could this be my body telling me I am full. Nose is runny too.

  31. After a couple of false starts, I made the call today for my initial consultation. I attended a seminar in the past where I was scared off by all of the possible negative results. Kiss your Mickey D’s diet Coke’s goodbye. Your peanut butter cups. Any red meat. I wasn’t sure I could give up all my favorite foods forever. It also didn’t help that my family practice physician was dead set against it. (Anyone run into that snafu?). So I went on another yo-yo up/yo-yo down diet, once again ending up weighing more than I ever have before. Reading what people write in this forum makes me believe that J can be successful and frankly, I’m out of other options. My question is, …

Hello. I have had the Gastric Sleeve surgery. I am currently taking Bariatric Advantage "Advanced Multi EA Chewable" vitamins and I hate them. My doctor told me specifically to stay about from "Capsule" vitamins for a specified amount of time after surgery and to also stay away from "Gummy" vitamins too. Anyway, now I see that Bariatric Advantage also has a "Chewy Bite" form of the vitamin. I am wondering if this form of vitamin is okay to take for Gastric Sleeve patients? Do any other Gastric Sleeve people take the "Chewy Bite" form of the vitamin?? I really want and need to stick to my vitamin regiment, but this "Chewable" by Bariatric Advantage is just …

Hello all. I am 9 months out and still have not gone to a restaurant. Mainly because of Covid. Now that it seems to be getting better, I am still very leery about it. I am so afraid of not being able to find something I am able to eat. I know that most places try to accommodate people with special diets, allergies, etc. but I have never done it before, and a little embarrassed also. I am looking for some advice on what other people do when they go out. How do you discreetly order without saying, No butter, no salt, none of this or that without feeling weird about it? I don't want them to think that I am being "too picky" or a pain in the but. Better yet, I am afraid that …

I am two months post-surgery (March 30) and had almost constant problems with nausea. Most food made me feel bad (some more than others) and I felt bad even some of the time between meals. I found the answer this week: a CBD vape device. My offspring uses one for social anxiety, I gave it a try and it was like magic. The nausea is completely gone. Yet it does not negate the restrictive benefits of the surgery. I still feel full on very small amounts of food and it is still uncomfortable if I eat too much. It is not AS acutely uncomfortable but uncomfortable enough to be an effective deterrent without incapacitating me. CBD vape fluid does not have THC in it (or onl…

Something weird is happening. Before surgery I was very hairy. I had to shave my legs and armpits a few times a week. I also had laser hair removal on my face. Now after surgery....my leg and armpit hair has literally stopped growing. I haven't shaved in months. I no longer have to get laser hair removal on my face. But the weirdest thing so far is that I am losing my pubic hair? At first I thought I was crazy, but then my hubby noticed it too. Is this happening to anyone else after surgery? Why is this happening? Does having WLS change your hormones?

  36. Has anyone had issues with the majority of carb based food intolerances? It seems like the farther out from surgery I am, the more issues with even tiny amounts of carbs I have. Things like rice (white or brown, literally 1-2tbs), pasta (protein, reg, or veggie based) any type of bread being keto and high fiber or regular old whole wheat, oatmeal, or most crackers cause me to vomit or get the “foamies” very quickly. I did not vomit one time until I started my Whole Foods/normal diet. I can tolerate some potatoes, and crackers (wheat thins for some reason in particular). I always eat these with protein and lower fats and never had any issues prior to surgery or food allerg…

  37. Started by Studio54,

This may seem like a strange question. I am just wondering if I need to make a special appointment with the bariatric psychologist on my team. I have lost now 60 pounds since the day of surgery RNY on February 24. Not quite 3 1/2 months yet. I feel like I’m losing weight too fast and I really don’t know how to cope with it. Everybody seems so excited and happy for me but I can’t wrap my brain around what’s happening. I did not do this for weight loss I did it for fixing severe Gerd so maybe that’s why I feel “weird”... I told my boyfriend that I just feel like I am in someone else’s body, lol ? The best way to explain this feeling is when something is too good to be true …

  38. Started by thughes113,

So, I had my fill on August 13, 2 cc's. I had to cancel today's appointment for a fill because I've had trouble with food getting stuck, and with vomiting. The culprit? CHICKEN. Can you believe it?! I chew and chew and chew, and this is after cutting it pretty small! I had stip steak last night with no trouble at all. But, tried to eat chicken again today...and just started feeling crappy. Has anyone else had trouble with, of all things, chicken? This kind of sucks. I can't afford other meats.

  39. Started by GingerSlim,

I am wondering if anyone tried this at all. I start puréed tomorrow, so I did a little shopping today. Bought some Natural PB because it has a good amount of protein in 2 tbsps...but I have not seen it on a list or heard anyone talk about it.

  40. My program doesn't want me to use straws. But I love straws and I think I can manage my sips better with straws! But then some videos by bariatric surgeons on YT and feedbacks by WLS candidates mention "they use straws just fine" - So I am kinda confused why such drastic take on straws?! Has anyone of you guys used straws throughout their journey? Any issue while using straws? I am really looking for some feedback here. I rather continue using straws, it simply makes it a better tool for sipping at least for me!

  41. Started by missmachine,

I am 2 weeks out - one of my incisions (different from the other one I posted about a few days ago) is healing all opened up. Instead of scabbing over, the scab is contoured in with the incision, which is a 1 inch long open hole and about 1.5centimeter deep. It looks like a bullet wound or something. I am worried I will have a permanent hole/indentation there even after its completely healed. This is really freaking me out. I had my surgery in MX and I have no Dr here because I don't have insurance. Should I go to the ER? Please advise!

I'm almost 10 months post-op and am down about 80# give or take, which is 30# from my goal. I was stuck at about 163 for several months and am still struggling to get enough protein in. I've been in contact with my RD and she suggested smaller, more frequent meals to try to get closer to my daily protein goal. The problem is, I'm finding that since following this routine, I'm gaining weight and am now up to 169. I reached out to her again, and she is now suggesting adding a low-dose Rx med to the mix. I'm not sure how I feel about this. She wants me to eat more small, frequent, protein-packed meals yet is suggesting an appetite suppressant? Doesn't make sense to me. I've…

I am 9 years post op and about a year ago I started vomiting after I ate a few times a week. About 4 months ago I started vomiting everything I ate. I've lost so much weight I look like death. I had an endoscopy done and they said my pouch was almost completely closed and they ballooned it to open it. It was better for 2 weeks and then I started vomiting again. In 4 months I have went from 175 to 120. I have had to leave work and can barely walk around I'm so weak. Has anyone else dealt with this? I finally found a bariatric specialist and will see her soon. But it's killing me that my kids are literally watching me die. I'm so malnourished its crazy

I am 9 months out and have gone from 216 to 131 and still have a huge belly with a lot of fat. I noticed it in recent pics that I have rolls still? How can this be if I only weigh 131 lbs.? I don't get it. I am so skinny everywhere else. How do I get rid of this belly without having plastic surgery?

So I am almost 12 weeks post op and have lost 40 pounds so far. I have been waking up with a slightly stiff back the past few days and I’m wondering if the memory foam mattress that has a larger body impression is causing my back problems?? Has anyone else had similar issues??

Hi all! I am 4 days post-op sleeve surgery. Haven’t been able to reach my protein or fluid goals yet due to nausea and pain around my sternum. I am eating sugar-free jello, but finding it hurts. I think I’m eating too fast. How long do you recommend to wait between bites? TIA!

Is anyone here avid swimmers? It’s my go to exercise. I swim at least 4 times a week. I do it for the cardio and the strength training. Does anyone else use this as their principles exercise? I’ve noticed it’s helped tone so much! Really happy to be able to swim.

  49. Started by Christina J.,

It’s only been about five months since my surgery and I’ve been having consistent stalls. I am nowhere near my goal weight. I have had some issues with birth control shots messing up my hormones but now I’ve been dancing around the same 6lbs gaining and losing them for two weeks. I’m getting my protein, drinking my water, and eating around 1000-1200 calories a day. I slowed down a bit on exercise due to another procedure I had to have but overall I’m still active. I just always feel bloated but probiotics are keeping my digestion on track. Any advice? Or has anyone else faced this?

  50. Today I just became and emotional wreck. I am crying I am feeling stressed I am feeling defeated. It’s mostly because I can’t do much of anything other than walk around, I’m still in a good amount of pain from surgery and I am relying on others to take care of my child and myself so it’s been hard. It’s like people are making me feel guilty because “I chose to have the surgery” therefore I should feel guilty for asking for help. I feel like my emotions are amplified more than normal because of the changes to my body. Any significance with that?
