POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. I had surgery on March 23rd and had the SADI. I’m starting puréed foods currently. My weight was 265 surgery day and I’m stuck at 252 for over a week. Did anyone else have this issue?

Hello all, I just needed to complain to someone! I'm calling bull on the whole "get adequate liquid" thing. I want to get adequate liquid! I crave a nice large ice-cold cup of water. 64 oz pre-surgery? EASY. A dream. Now? Pureed stage, 3 small meals a day. Plus 2 protein shakes. Wait half an hour before eating or drinking, half an hour to complete your meal, and then wait half an hour afterward. Let's do the math. 5 x 1.5 = 7.5. I'm supposed to dedicate 7.5 hours a day to consuming food/protein but still get 64 oz-in. It breaks my heart. Hands down the most difficult thing about this experience. I miss being able to consume water like normal. Sometimes I worry I'm s…

See picture! so I went home on Easter Sunday and thought Premier Protein 1 gram of sugar , 160 calories, 30 protein fit all the requirements, although it did some requirements not all of them so with this surgery you must follow to the letter. the only one true protein shake that I needed was Ensure Max Protein Shake this is considered a clear protein shake and I have been able to tolerate it. the other one I poured a 1 ounce cup and sipped less than 1/4 of it and immediately my stomach did not tolerate it, kept coming back up my throat. so I hope this helps you guys when you are post OP, remember all protein shakes are not created equal.

First off, I understand that it is the changing of the seasons and I recognize my normal snottiness from that. I am on allergy medications due to the typical severity of my symptoms but this is about this consistent mucus build up at the back of my throat. Ever since my surgery in January 2021 I have noticed that it feels like thick gunk at the back of my throat when I swallow. It can hinder eating because it makes me feel a bit nauseous and it makes me even less hungry. When I clear my throat I feel it move a bit but it never truly goes away. Even when my allergy meds are full blast and everything is dried out that mucus is still sitting at the back of my throat. I have …

Hi. I’m new here and had vsg December 9th 2019. I have been following the advice and instruction of my team and find that I’m not losing as quickly as some who were sleeved around the same time. I’m also recently diagnosed with lipedema and was wondering if anyone else has been diagnosed and if it causes weight loss to be very slow? I also wonder if weight is slightly inaccurate because of the fluid and fat in our legs? I would appreciate anyone with Lipedema to chat it out with me because it’s so discouraging to not lose after having had surgery for weight... Is there anyone with wls success stories who happen to have lipedema? Thanks in advance.

I am finally home! I got surgery April 1st thursday, they kept me in hospital till April 4th! Easter morning I was released! crazy thing is that I had more nausea than pain! I couldn't tell since I was so sleepy, tired what was really bothering me but it was nausea. I couldnt tolerate anything liquids but then by saturday night sunday morning I was drinking normal no nausea. the nausea felt like when you go on a spinning ride, for me it was hard because I avoid those rides for that reason I am far too sensitive. I am home though I did it! I am happy although it might not show because I am ssssssssssssssso tired sleepy. after 10 years of trying to get this surgery, I tried…

I had my WLS in August 2020 and have lost 90 lbs. down to 166 lbs. Before my surgery I could not stand or walk for more then 10 minutes and had to use a walker for any distance. I had and still have some back issues but have been able to walk/hike up to about 3 miles for the last couple of months. I want to try to build up speed and want to be able to do a 5k race in September. I jogged a quarter mile today at 3:11 - makes me realize I am still way out of shape. Any ideas on how I can build up my stamina and be able to run a 5k in September?

Before surgery I mixed a gallon of crystal light a day (128 oz) and I didn’t try....that’s just how much I drank. Post surgery I have to force myself to drink 64 oz. I just don’t feel thirsty so I forget and of course when I do remember I can only drink a little bit. Does THIRST feeling ever come back? Any one else that doesn’t feel thirsty?? It seems so weird that making stomach smaller interferes with thirst unless grehlin is involved?? Just curious.

Good Evening, I am new to this site so firstly hello. Secondly I just had Gastric Sleeve surgery in March 25,2021. The pain has become fairly minimal, but sometimes I have a random stomach cramp. Sometimes it will feel like it’s a hunger pain and somethings it’s a quick sharp pain. Since I’m barely a week passed is this still normal ? I don’t want to check the internet anymore and make myself worried about a leak when I don’t have any other symptoms. I would appreciate any help. I’m the only person I know who’s had this type of surgery so this community is all I have for knowledge. Thank you for anyone whom can assist me. ?

AfterbThe 1st surgery, the doctor concluded that I had blockage inside my small intestine so they had to open my stomach to clear it. They had to insert 2 tubes and over 30 staples. After 1 week and 2 days of misery in the ICU and normal room I'm out of the hospital. Currently on stage 2, full liquid diet and lost 26LBS since the beginning of my surgery (March 16th). I get the staples taken out on the 7th and the last tube gets taken out early next month. So, this has not at all been an easy journey for me. I've been very weak and I feel dehydrated even tho I drink clear liquid alot! I'm going to my 2nd infusion Monday to help with my dehydration. If I could say I regret…

Just curious...I know this has probably been asked many times before but I'm curious to see what others are doing. I weigh once a day, same time(-ish), but 1/2 pound fluctuations are kinda making me a little neurotic so I'm wondering if I should weigh less often...

  19. Started by Jnfinney,

I was advanced to pureed foods this week and am about 2 1/2 weeks post op. Everything is going well; I am eating slow enough without pain/getting sick and I've been super thirsty and getting a good amount of liquid in. However, when I met with my dietician, she told me that I should only be eating 2 tablespoons of food per meal and drinking protein drinks in-between meals. How much were you guys eating this early out? I'm struggling to get protein in with liquids and it doesn't help if I can only eat 2 tablespoons of pureed proteins. I guess I just feel like 2 tablespoons is a tiny amount, but I'm not sure what I was expecting.

  20. I had Gastric Bypass March 25th, so about 6 days ago. I am very frustrated, I have been having some weird post op experiences I never expected to deal with. 1. Bad constipation 2. Feeling incoherent at times, even being slightly combative 3. Feeling frustrated if not down right disappointed with myself. So first I have had extremly bad constipation. I still havent had a full bowl movement, today, tuesday 3/30 I sent my husband to buy milk of magnesia to help. It has helped a little so hopefully things will get better the rest of this week. Secondly is anyone else incoherent and even combative at times? It only happens when I am waking up from a nap. After …

So, since I moved on from straight liquids to actual food, it seems like my weight loss has slowed to 2 pounds a week. So for the entire month of January is was 2-2.2 pounds. I understand I am losing but in my head I really thought I would lose 4lbs a week or something after surgery. I am almost down 50 (45 in total) and 26lbs post op (6 weeks out). I stick to the meal plan, get enough protein, water, and take my vitamins. I don’t cheat ever. So it kind of stings that it’s 2lbs a week. I did talk to my surgeon and she said my weight loss should pickup more from months 4-8 especially but that I am on track with their calculations. I don’t know. I know I’m not the 600l…

So, I am now on purees though I don't feel like eating much of anything. In fact, I only eat when I start to feel shaky because I know I need to eat something. What does being "full" feel like for you? I had about 1/4 cup of pureed cottage cheese this morning and started having a sensation almost like heartburn or a lump in my chest like the food didn't go down. I wouldn't say it is painful, but it is uncomfortable. I'm assuming this means I am full? Can anyone else share their experience with restriction?

  23. Hi everyone I am just 3 days post-op and have been reading a lot about loose skin, mostly about how much people have once reaching their goal and whether to have PS. I realize surgery is the only proven way to address loose skin but I’ve heard some anecdotal reports of other methods too that may help minimize it. I haven’t seen many posts talking about what non surgical treatments people have tried that may have helped at all (collagen, compression clothes, exercise etc) and to what extent you felt any improvement. Also what problems or annoyances you have had with loose skin (is it bulky through the clothes, is it uncomfortable to exercise) and what you did to…

  24. The 23rd of March was my 1 month sleev-a-versary so I thought I'd post an update. I'd love to hear how others who are about a month out are doing, so feel free to share the good, bad, or gross (and I do mean poo talk). My recovery has thankfully been uneventful. I had the normal struggles in the first week (nausea, water/protein intake, gas pain, uncomfortable sleeping) but nothing terrible. I have had some poo struggle days, that has been the worst! Right now the pipes are working (cross fingers) but a week ago - hoo boy, not great. I've discovered that I need to take a stool softener at least every other day or things stop moving. My energy has been better, but the…

My surgery is on the 8th and I am feeling super nervous about it all. It's not about the surgery itself as much as it is about the lifestyle changes that come with it. I don't have to even give myself a reminder as to why I am going through with this because my body is letting me know on a daily basis. However, food has been kind of my go-to for all my life. From grieving to celebrating, food has always been part of it. I am having a hard time thinking about what else there is to do. Occasionally, I tell my husband that I would like to go on a date and it is almost always a dinner and movie scenario. I know we can still go to the movies and dinner, but I don't think …

I’m scheduled to get my sleeve in a month (yay!) but I’m afraid it’ll worsen my gerd. I’ve heard on here that some people get their hiatal hernias fixed when they get their surgery. Does having a gastric surgery automatically fix the hernia or is it something extra that your doctor has to do? I developed a tiny hiatal hernia over the last year and I’d like to have it fixed with my surgery. My surgeon knows about it but hasn’t mentioned anything regarding fixing it. Should I bring it up beforehand or is it something that gets fixed with surgery anyway?

I am on week 2 and will be on week 3 shortly. I seem to be doing really well with blended foods and haven’t stepped out to eat anything I shouldn’t be. I am getting some more energy which seems like this is the time I should really work out a lot to burn off. Would this be an accurate statement? If so, does anyone wanna share what’s working for them? How many steps are you getting in a day? Biggest question is has anyone stepped out to try anything we shouldn’t be eating?

I went from taking 2 meds & one multi vitamin to taking 9 different things daily. I also take 50,000 IU vitamin D weekly. My kitchen countertop looks like a pharmacy & depending how I’m feeling, it can take an hour to get them all down. Is this pretty standard?

My gastric bypass surgery was on February 24th. I’ve been very sick since. Regurgitating all food I eat except liquids, within 5-10 minutes. When I try to eat, I eat one to two bites out of a kid spoon. At this point I’m starting to get malnourished. I can’t keep any food down at all, not even my protein shakes. My surgeon has suspicions that this may be a stricture. I go in on the 7th of April for an EGD to check. Has anyone else had any problems with a stricture? What was recovery like? Did it set you back at all?

  33. How long before you were able to kick BP Meds to the curb? I have been on them about 10 years and have had some really low readings at times since surgery. I also suspect they create a little weight gain. Looking forward to being off these in the near future!

I am almost 2 weeks post op. I am finding that all protein drinks make me nauseous to the point where I usually can’t even finish them. I’m not even getting close to my protein goal because of this. So, I’m really at a loss. If I drink the protein shakes, I get nauseous. If I don’t drink the protein shakes, I get shaky and nauseous. Any help? I see my dietician Tuesday.

Hey guys I really need some guidance and help right now. So I'm about 10 weeks post op and will be going to Myrtle Beach for a week with my family. I'm excited but I'm worried about food, anyone know places there that are bariatric friendly or ideas on what I should bring? It's just a simple hotel so all I can think is protein shakes? But with the stage I'm at am I able to eat protein bars? Or the meal replacement ones? Still not sure about snacks even though I'm not a snacker...any help would be appreciated.

I had Gastric Bypass on 3/25/2021. I came home yesterday evening. I was shocked at the amount of post op meds I have to take and some are for over 90 days! The most daunting med is the shot to prevent blood clots. Thank god for my loving and supportive hubby, he really came in clutch and offered to give me the shots (2x a day mind you). Anyone else blown away by having 9 post op meds added to existing meds and vitamins?

Pre-op one of my big angsts was talking to family about my surgery. I know that, for most of them, they would not be on board. I have a loving and highly opinionated family of people that view themselves as wellness and health experts and I swear if there was a family motto it would be "you know what you should do". All of this contributed to me feeling like telling them about my WLS would open a can of worms. Not telling didn't seem like an option until I realized that, because of Covid social distancing and other distractions in my family right now I could probably pull off a secret surgery. Which is exactly what I did. Only my husband and one person at work know I had …

  39. Just throwing this out (pun intended) as it was something I really grappled with. I waste food now. And I was raised not to so it's been hard. But the bottom line is I've had to come to terms with it and let it be "no big deal". My work is the kind that often provides "Meals" as part of it's meetings etc. Which is lovely. No complaining here. But I have found that nearly every single time I end up throwing away more than half the meal. And quickly so people don't notice. I've tried to "save" it in a doggy bag for the next day and/or bring it home for the family. But the truth is... day-old protein doesn't go down as well. Often too dry. And neither my hubs or …

  40. I know I’m not hungry, it’s just a head game. Some days it hasn’t gotten to me at all, some days in the evening is when it sneaks up on me. I don’t cheat or snack or anything, but I also don’t relish the feeling. I’m just shy of two weeks post op. I’m doing good with consistently getting in over 70g of proteins and my calories and carbs are pretty consistent day to day as well. Did anyone notice certain meals would lead to them feeling the head hunger more than others? I’m cycling through 4 or 5 different “meals” right now so it shouldn’t be hard to determine if one is more prone to making me feel this way, lol:)

After my endoscopy they told me I have a small hiatal hernia, which I’m assuming the surgeon will be fixing when he goes in and does the sleeve. I’ve read some commentaries around about people having some increased pain or nausea related to having a hernia repair done at the same time. Hey I’m 3 weeks out and all my incisions are healed even the biggest one where they pulled the tumor out of but it is still sensitive in that area. Mostly when I drive or do too much around the house it becomes very sensitive to even touch. It is annoying because all of the other incisions are fine and I don’t even really see any scars. I know this big one was going to take longer but Dag! It is not unbearable pain because I can do a lot of things it’s just it hits me once in a while when I’m not expecting it. And it’s not even really on the incision it’s more the surrounding area that’s sensitive. Wondering if I should use ice or something.

So unfortunately I did check my weight and I only lost 1lb since my post op appointment last week and I am extremely annoyed. Like in another week I’ll be 4 weeks out and I only lost 14 lbs after surgery so far. I am trying my best with protein and water goals and I am following the plan, not to mention I move a lot and my bms are normal so I’m not understanding what the issue is. Trying to not get discouraged I know this is normal but still it’s a little disheartening but I know it will get better.

So I had my post op appointment and told my surgeon every complication I was having and she said sounds like something went wrong and the only way to fix it is to have another surgery. She instructed me to go back to the hospital. I told her I will in the am once I dropped my bf off at the airport( he has no one else. On my way home I started having horrible shoulder bed could barley walk upright it’s just so much I’ve been in bed since I got home.

Hi everyone. Hope everyone is well and enjoying the process to a new healthy lifestyle. I am 3 weeks post op and I’m worried that things are not going properly. I’m currently in the purée stage however I can only eat 2 tablespoons of food and still have some uncomfortable feelings when drinking anything. I took a gi series and it came back good. However I still feel that tightness in my chest for about an hour or two if I eat more than 2 tablespoons. Has anyone else experience this? I have been given the option to do an endoscopy to open it up a little but I rather not if it’s just part of the healing processes.
