POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A

Life after weight loss surgery. Recovery, diet stages, nutrition, labs, complications, and weight regain, whether you are weeks or years out.

  1. Started by s11rony303,

Today I’ll turn 2 month after sleep I noticed 2 weeks ago that I was up 2 pounds then lost 5 during the week yesterday I was up again 1 pounds I don’t understand why I gain weight despite I eat below 500 calories please help

  2. So, Just wondering if any of you might be having the same issue. Since I am now down 109.5 lbs (from 255 to 145.5) since May 8th, 2013 I am having a really really hard time sitting. At all. any time I sit, no matter where it is my tailbone hurts so bad. I can sit threw dinner, but thats about as long as I can stand to sit. Even sitting in bed hurts so bad. We went to a movie Friday and I nearly cried when I stood up because it hurt that bad. Anyone else, any tips? My mom said when she was really thin she had this problem too, and she just took a pillow everywhere with her to sit on... but even that hurts! Please tell me this will get better! BTW here are my stats: P…

  3. I don't mean to get graphic here, but I'm having a rather embarrassing problem. I'm a few weeks shy of my 1 year post-op anniversary, and have just recently been able to tolerate more solid foods like certain fruits, vegetables and grains after several months of difficulty. While this is a great relief, I can't help but notice I've been dealing with the ABSOLUTE WORST GAS of my entire life. I mean, we're talking really loud and smelly farts (again, sorry to get graphic) that are probably capable of killing a nest of rodents (which would save on extermination, but ya know...). So the question I have is, has anyone else ever experienced this, and if so, what help…

  4. I wondered how everyone was doing with follow up appointment and how covid has affected this? Since my surgery (UK, private) at the end of August 2020, I have had no blood tests, no consultant follow up, just a couple of dietician appointments. What would be considered normal in terms of tests and appointments? I feel well generally, and have no problems other than a really slight niggling discomfort under where one of the incisions is, so don't *need* any appointments as such, but I'm starting to feel that I should have had something given the nature of the surgery and whether they are not doing it because of covid? I'm kicking myself for not finding out about …

My surgeon cleared me yesterday to start working out. I went ahead and got my 10000 steps and did some squats, jumps, and knee highs. Nothing too strenuous. I also upped my water a bit. Today I gained almost a pound. I just finished a stall so this is a bit stressful. My question is will this even out or do I need to be doing something extra?

My surgery is on Jan 21 and I just wanted to ask everyone what did they do for self-care post-surgery? I have never been too great at it due to my crazy work schedule and always on the go. However, while on this journey I really wanted to pay special care of myself- so I was looking for ideas or suggestions for the hospital visit and home care that will make healing a bit more bearable. I was thinking maybe buying some scented candles for the home, lining up some good-spirited films, and purchasing a back massager or something ( is that safe)

Hello all. I thought it would be helpful for us to share food diaries to other members for some possible insights and opportunities to try different approaches. I am day 2 week 2. Currently having: Bfast: 100ml lactose free milk, 1/2 banana, 1Tbs high protein low sugar vanilla yoghurt, blended with crushed ice. Morning tea: Usually takes all morning for me to drink a 50/50 mix of apple juice and water, no sugar added. Lunch: 125ml thinly pureed pumpkin soup. Soup is home made, simply pumpkin and water, 1/2 tsp chicken stock and some garlic powder. All pureed. Afternoon tea: sugar free iceblock - lemonade Dinner: Last night I tried …

I’m 1 month and a half post-op and I was wondering if I can eat raw fruits like strawberries and pineapple?

  9. Started by BetterBelizeIt,

Has anyone suffered with being cold only at night. It’s gotten to the point where I have to sleep with a blow dryer to keep warm. I lost my job and insurance due to covid so I have not had the opportunity to do lab work. And sometimes I feel faint if I do something like move too fast or bend or lift something heavy. Any recommendations or suggestions?

3 months after my bypass im having heart burn or a hot feeling in my throat and chest that feels like acid reflux. Im on tablets already for reflux. Just wondering if anyone is or has been experiencing this. It happens when I eat and even if I dont eat.

  11. So, I recently posted about hair loss. While I'm not happy that this is a side effect, it's comforting to know that some of you have gone thru this as well, and for most, your hair grew back. I'm taking all kinds of supplements in addition to the "regular" vitamins required post-op. I've added liquid iron, prenatal vitamins, biotin, and collagen. The first question is about stalling - again. I've been bouncing between 181-184 for over a month now. I'm not eating much due to the discomfort (I posted about this also). I'm desperately trying to get my protein in, but I simply can't eat enough to do that. I'm also taking the Unjury powder (which I can barely tolerate du…

  12. I had RNY bypass surgery and hiatal hernia repair on 12/22. I'm worried I over did it with walking. I've been having sharp pain on the left side of my abdomen and up under my ribs when I take deep breaths (the last 3-4 days). The pain is constant, but only becomes sharp/stabbing when I try to breathe deep or twist my torso. I'm still doing all clear liquids, getting my 60+ oz of water a day & added protien shakes today without issue. Wondering if this is normal and/or if anyone else experienced this. Thanks!

I had gastric sleeve. I have regained a lot of my weight sitting around with the covid, just one poor excuse. I have no energy. I have GERD now and saw my doc. he is having me do a endoscopy and UGI. He thinks I will have to convert to GBP. Not being cynical, but of course he does, He is a surgeon. If I really focus and try to just take the weight off, wouldn't that be better than BPG. has anyone just did that?

  15. Started by SAS11,

I had my gastric bypass procedure on Tuesday 11/03. I checked my weight the morning of surgery. I hadn’t checked again until today, and somehow I weigh 1 lb. *more* than I did on surgery day. I don’t even know how that’s possible unless it’s a side effect of the procedure itself due to swelling in my body. I’ve consumed nothing except water, sugar free jello, protein soup, clear protein drinks, and heavily diluted apple juice. Taking in enough fluids and protein has been as difficult as expected, so I’m certainly not getting too much. And meds, of course. I’m taking meds too. But that’s the extent of what’s going into my body. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone…

I know this sounds weird, but I feel like fat is *actually* coming out through my pores: my skin is super soft and it feels like I've put lotion on when I haven't. My husband noticed too. Is this a thing? I'm not complaining mind you, it's just really odd, especially given that it's winter. I know that in some extreme diets you're not allowed to use conditioner or lotions because it absorbs in the skin (supposedly).

  17. Hi All, Looking for some advice about some symptoms I'm having. First of all, there is the weirdness of temperature -- my nose, hands, and feet are freezing but the rest of me feels overheated -- yet I do not have a fever. Also, I feel sick. Just crappy and ill. Just gross and like I have the flu or am sick to my stomach. Yes, there is gas and burps but it's more than that. I am struggling with both hydration and full liquids, though I am getting my 64 oz in a day. I don't want to drink or eat because I feel so horrible for the hours after. I have slowed down my eating and drinking, set a timer for bites (again, full liquids so sips really), set a timer f…

I have to say, being day 3 after surgery I have asked myself a number of times what the hell have I done....then I have moments of comfort which removes all concern. It took me nearly 12 hours to come out of the anaesthetic properly, and I had the awful sweats and nausea, but no vomiting. I remember only the Ice packs put behind my shoulders and the cold towel on my head.....ooh it felt so good. The nurses were just smashing and I'm going to send a thank you hard to them at the ward. I came home the day after surgery. I've had two bad nights, but last night felt so much better and slept 8 hours straight. I am already 4kgs down since surgery so that gives me hope. …

May be the dumbest question ever...but what does (your) full feels like after surgery? Before surgery I never felt like I knew what full felt like. It was just hungry (then eat/binge) to sick. Since surgery (a little over 2 weeks post op), I don’t really know what full feels like. I stop after 2 oz because I feel heavy, or I feel like waves of nausea coming on. So that brings me to my question... since being post op, what does your full feel like?

  22. Started by CKmommy,

I am on day four after surgery. I am following the guidelines of 4oz per hour, but I have no clue whether I am feeling hungry or full? Like no idea at all! Is this normal? Also, this my be tmi but I am having issues with bowel incontinence for the last 2 days. Is this normal?

I am into my fourth week of post op recovery and have run across something I wasn't expecting...any food I eat once...I no longer like. I am supposed to be introducing new foods (pureed/mushy) into my diet. The first few bites are always good - then it starts quickly to become a bit revolting. After 4-6 oz I am done with it. Not only for that meal...but for good. the thought of it is revolting.... While there are worse things in the world, I have gone back to ensuring I am getting my protein through shakes, and still try to find something I can tolerate, more than once. So far the only thing I have found is rotisserie chicken meat. For some reason that is ok. …

What do you do when you can't finish your meal? I prepare an appropriate portion size (about 4 ounces) and eat slowly with small utensils. Sometimes, before I finish the portion of food I prepared, I start to feel full, so I stop eating. I'm sure this happens to most of us on occasion, so what do you do with the rest of the food? I usually put it in the refrigerator for a while and then go back and get the rest later. I don't know if this is the right approach, or if it's a bad habit that will come back to bite me someday. I'm a little worried because I recently saw a WLS YouTuber say that this is a habit that contributed to her regain. I don't like wastin…

I joined this group when I started my journey in July. I've read so many posts about the 3-4 week stall. I knew it was coming and I still wasn't prepared. I was sleeved on 12/9. I've been stuck at 218 for days....... I'm trying to focus on non-scale goals, but it's so hard not seeing it move!! How did you push through your stall???

  26. I had my sleeve 12/28 and have been experiencing light headed and dizziness. I’m making sure I get my water in as well as protein. Called the nurses station and they said try drinking sugar free Gatorade or something with electrolytes. I did that, nothing. I have a glucose meter and I checked it. It was 72. That’s pretty low. I’m not sure how to bring that number up if I can’t have sugar. I have an appointment here in a couple hours and will bring it up with the surgeon.

Heya, I'm seeking advice. Since Christmas morning - I have had back pain from my waistline to my lower back all the way across. At first I thought I just strained muscles during my gym workout 2 days prior, but the pain has continued and progressively gotten worse. I've been using a heating paid & tylenol 3, then I took oxy for it (just twice) and it helped a lot. The pain comes & goes. Early this morning to mid-morning - I felt fine... but I had the Oxy the night before and slept 8 hours on the heating pad. The pain resurfaced about noon today, then progressively got my intense. My brother started thinking it was kidney related and I google…

I'm literally wearing three layers on my feet and have myself buried in a thick blanket and they still feel like ice! I have two pairs of thick fleece socks and fleece lined slipper socks and my feet are still ice cold. I've pulled my socks down to check a few times when it starts to get painful and they feel like ice not just how they feel to me, but actually physically feel like ice. My hands are also having issues and I've tried wearing layered gloves or burying them in blankets, sitting on them in an attempt to warm them and nothing works. I had surgery 7 weeks ago and it took me awhile to start having any energy. But the last 3 days all I want to do is sleep. Like I'll sleep for 12 hours! I've been so good about my protein, my vitamins, my water intake to a minimum 64 ounces and have been trying to increase my calories to 700 like my doctor said. I see my surgeon next week and I'm going to ask him about checking my iron. Anyone else go through this? Any suggestions?

So, I feel funny writing about this, but...has anyone else ever experienced a negative change in their social life post-op? I had my surgery back in January. Although my physical health has made drastic improvements, I'm afraid my mental health has taken a toll. I noticed people have been treating me very differently since having the surgery. I've been getting so many rude comments, I can't keep up. They think I "took the easy way out (not realizing it was actually quite the opposite: the last resort)," and/or are freaked out by all my new eating habits and restrictions or are saying cruel things like "oh, you'll just gain it back like so-and-so did anyway, yo…

Today was my follow up appointment with my Dr. I had my sleeve on 12/15. I told my dr that I’ve been walking two miles a day for the past week. He was not impressed. He said walking will not help me loose weight; sticking to the diet will. I was kind of deflated because I thought walking was a good thing. ?

I really didn’t have a stall at 3 or 4 weeks, but I am having one here at between 7 and 8 weeks...is that a normal time for stall, lol? My weight has been within a 2-4 oz of the same for about a week. When these stalls happen at this stage do I need to change up my workout routine or anything, based on your experiences, or is this just a lull and one should just stay in their lane not changing anything. The trainer told me down the way we will add in more variety to my workouts to keep them varied, but she didn’t make it sound like this early on that would be a factor, nor had the dietician made mention of counting calories or adding at this point due to exercise. I am currently on pureed diet and was able to tolerate eggs and shrimp (kind of) yesterday. However today I feel weak, nauseous, often dizzy. I am now 16 days post op of my gastric sleeve! I’m down roughly 22 pounds total, including the 5 from the pre op diet. I can’t sleep on my sides because of joint pain! My hips, knees, and shoulders hurt so much. Even with leg pillows and readjusting, I can’t lay on a side for more than 2 hours. And then everything hurts throughout the day plus some rib pain. Is this normal?

  41. Hi! I’m planning on hopefully having a sleeve in March, and I realize it’s going to come up quickly so I’m thinking and planning! I’ve been wondering if there are any reputable meal delivery or prep services that do post op food prep - like for liquid and and purée stage foods. I absolutely understand that the purpose of WLS is to relearn food and food prep and how to make to sustainable and work for you in the future - and I am a big cooker and so is my husband who is super supportive and all about prepping food for me that will meet my needs! I also have bad anxiety and am big into ✨planning✨ and for those few weeks I’m so worried that I’m not going to eat the right …

I am 4 months post op, and pretty lucky in that things seem to have gone quite well so far. Something I've noticed in the last month or so though is how hungry I feel at night, and sometimes I feel like I really need to eat before I go to sleep, which is usually about 4 hours after my last meal. I often wake up feeling the same. Right now I am awake at midnight, not being able to sleep and and feeling like I need to eat. I don't think it is head hunger because I don't actually want to eat, it's more like a sensation of emptiness. Has anyone else had this? Am I actually hungry?! I am consuming around 500-900 calories a day. Pre op I was told I was prediabetes, so I wonder …

Hi, Just had my surgery in 12/15 and I feel really gassy plus my body decided to send me my  monthly gift too, aka my period. Any suggestions on food intake. I’m allowed to eat mushy foods but I’m scared now. Today I drank half a bottle of Protein Shake with no problems. Also drank  Protein water and regular water too in 30ml (1oz) cups. 48. Before surgery, I was in the habit of only weighing myself when I went to the doctor. After surgery, I’ve weighed once a week, but I’m wondering if I should not weigh myself unless at the doctors office because I’m feeling obsessed with the scale. I’ve heard when we focus on the healthy lifestyle the weight will organically fall off. It’s not fun being obsessed with the scale and there are other great wins post-surgery other than the number on the scale. What are your thoughts?

Hi everyone! Was sleeved 3 days ago and it’s very overwhelming. My dr said that I can’t drink a half hour before eating and a half hour after eating. It takes me a while to eat foods now( if I can get anything in) and it seems like I’m always checking the clock of when I last ate or drank in order to get everything in. Anyone else experiencing this? Does it get better? How strict is the no eating and drinking rule? thanks!

Has anyone taken a month long break from active weight loss? Was it hard restarting the weight loss phase? I had major surgery the first week of December. The week prior I had to stop going to the Y due to Covid concerns. I admit I lost focus when it came to diet while recovering. I've increased my calories, especially carbs, more than I should have. But I didn't gain! I finally got the ok to start exercising again and I'm ready to focus on diet. Prior to surgery I was close to my goal weight but hadn't officially entered the maintenance phase. I'm curious if I can expect my weight loss to resume as prior to surgery or can I expect it to be more challenging since …
